So what's the backstory behind this video?
Well, I’m a Landscape photographer, based in the UK, searching for interesting locations, mainly around the UK, but also travelling further afield. I endeavour to make all of my videos as interesting as possible, with editing skills I've picked up over the years, also with adding music to match the mood of the locations and images. Using a basic set up, consisting of my DJI Osmo Action, my Mavic Pro Drone (although not all the time) and either my trusty Nikon D850 or my Nikon D7200 cameras, for the images.
I always show my images, no matter how unhappy I am with them, I think you as the viewer deserve to see the good along with the bad, after all, if it’s on the video, you've already seen behind the scenes.
So sit back, grab a coffee or a tea, relax and enjoy my slightly unprofessional, sometimes comical, but always crammed with passion video.

Great vlog! I’m sure once the big day has happened there will be more vlogs, if nothing else than to get some peace! 😂 xxx
Welcome back Ben, it's good to see you back. You've nothing to apologise for, and your passion always comes through. Great shots too, you haven't missed a beat. Cheers, Bevan.
Thank you so much Bevan, that's really nice to hear, and so appreciated. All the best.
Well done Ben! good to see you back, especially in north Wales. Congratulations on your 'big news' as well
Thank you so much Robin, really appreciated
Great to see you back and congratulations on the news. Fantastic video as always.👍
Thank you so much Garry, really appreciated mate
Excellent video Ben and nice to see you back. Congratulations on the promotion and the future wedding
Thank you so much Dave, really appreciated 👍
Great to see you back Ben - missed your vlogs, stunning first image with autumnal colours- onwards & upwards- oh and a change in shift patterns will work wonders, trust me I know 👍
Thank you so much Gary, really appreciated. Yeah I’m sure it will, it’s just such a change, but it’s getting better. Thanks again mate, all the best. 👍
I miss climbing Snowdon. Great video Ben, and congratulations.
It’s such a lovely place, I’m sure you’ll be able to get back up there mate. Thank you so much Nigel, really appreciated mate. 👍
Congratulations on both the job promotion and your future marriage. I follow your vlog with great interest and have been really surprised (and partly worried) about your absence but now we have the explanation, thanks for that. A question regarding your photography techniques; you have amazing sharpness all the way from nearby details to the more distant parts of the image. Are you using focus bracketing or is it small aperture shots?
Thank you so much, it’s always lovely to hear. No, I tend not to focus stack, it’s something I’ve done in the past but always found it a bit of a faff, unless it’s truly needed. On landscape photography I generally always shoot between f9 and f11, this generally works well and either focus into the distance or midway into the image. I do tend to bracket for light though.
@@BenMcDonaldPhotographythanks for the rapid answer. I am looking forward to your next video. In the meantime I will enjoy your Instagram images. /Robert
Congratulations to you both. Last time I was on the Watkins path, it was fine walking up. But in typical Eryri weather, it turned so quickly and I was walking down the track which looked more like a small river. But that's the chance we all take when visiting our wonderful National Park
Thank you so much Mike. Yeah it can change so quickly, sometimes it works for your photography, other times it doesn’t. Thanks again, all the best. 👍
Congratulations to both you and Sarah and I'm glad to see you back. It seems the weather always catches up to you on that trail.
Thank you so much Bill, yeah it’s difficult but well worth visiting. One to return to I guess.
Congratulations and well done on the promotion. Good to see you back with some very nice images.
Thank you so much David, really appreciated mate. 👍
A very delayed reaction, but I feel the need to say that I love your content. I'm from the Netherlands, hence my avatar, and I'm a happy owner of a D850. I'm a driven amateur and I mainly use it for landscape photography including woodlands and an occasional portrait shooting. For landscape I combine it with a 16-35mm F/4, an old but gold 80-200mm F/2.8 (no VR) and a Sigma 105mm 2.8 for the portraits. Landscape means tripod for me and remote shutter control. I have a small collection of Nikon DSLR's (D70s, D200, D300, D700, D500, D850) and my only mirrorless Nikon is a Z fc, which I bought for the fun of it. It's actually a very capable little camera. But the D850 is my absolute favorite.
I was there a few months ago Ben, after being given the wrong direction by a so called local, I had to walk up to where the waterfall goes under a bridge in knee deep mud in some places, only to have to climb down to a waterfall like this, a trickle. I was at Tigers Clough a couple of days ago too, great levels and you will be happy to know, practically no litter.
Came across your video, as I've been to New Brighton many times myself. I live in Skelmersdale & often take trips out to Liverpool or across the water. Love the long exposure shots. You've gained a new flower 👍
487 Yundt Bypass
Not sure my legs could cope with that walk. I do love a waterfall mind. Lovely images!
Nice
Thanks for sharing Ben some cracking images. If you manage to have a track day try to be lucky enough to have a pro driver as a passenger just like shutter speed they will tell you breaking points corner speed track undulations to get the best experience. Best wishes 👍
Thank you so much Steve. I was fortunate enough to do a little bit of racing with Mazda, entered a competition and did a few driving days with them, they covered a lot. I’ve done a couple of track days since and originally bought the TT that’s in that video for track days, however it was in too good of condition to use it like that. Although every time I’m there, I’m tempted to enter it on the next event. 👍
Love my used D810. I did send it in to Nikon to get the focus realigned because the focus fine tune corrections were too close to the 50 mark for my lenses. The D810 has a strong screw drive motor so you can use the screw drive telephotos with confidence. The contrast of the larger FX sensor over the DX cameras is noticeable.
Nice video about your photography, but you were 9 minutes in before you really mentioned the D810, and then it seemed to be in passing. Not complaining, just observing. I was hoping for some more thorough insights on the camera.
Wait untill you become an ' old fart ', you will appreciate the monopod then. I do find mine usefull, especially after having spinal surgery, even with a light 70-300 lens, the monopod takes a lot of weight off my back and hips. It can double as a walking stick when I start up the hills.
Hi Ben, just discovered this video of yours. Great content en beautiful pictures. I am about to purchase a D850 myself, albeit second hand. Nice to see your positive spirit. Looking forward to more of your content! Kind regards, Pascal (Belgium)
It can be difficult with waterfalls. When I visited the stunning Brecon Beacons waterfalls a couple of years ago in Feb the rivers were swollen and the waterfalls raging. Impressive to see but difficult to photograph. Hopefully you'll hit the 2k subs very soon 👍 I'll still be on board 😊
I need to head to the Brecon Beacons, it’s a place I’ve not visited since a child. Thank you so much mate, yeah the numbers are going up steadily. It’s really appreciated. 👍
Hi Ben I was away with a few friends last weekend and we agreed to set the alarms for 4am to hopefully capture the sunrise at 5am. We got up but there was no sunrise (well not visually) I love early mornings as it is the best time of the day being so quiet but if you then plan to get the sunset on the same day that's a long time to wait and in the summer months it usually means harsh lighting for most of it plus you're knackered the following day. Having said that I'm heading to The Roaches tonight in the camper to get sunset then sunrise in the morning so limited sleep in between but at least I'll have rested
Oh lovely, I hope you manage to get something from your trip. It’s always a risk and it doesn’t matter how much research you do with all the Apps, the slightest movement from the clouds and a sunrise or sunset can be ruined, but that’s the risk and the chase, I think that’s why we do it, yeah disappointing when we don’t get it but so exciting when we do. All the best mate. 👍
@@BenMcDonaldPhotography well there was no sunset at The Roaches 🙄 but I managed to get some feint Noctilucent Clouds this morning unfortunately I was a bit late. Should've set the alarm for 2am to check. Even though I was in my camper and it would have meant me looking out of the window 🤣
Great video Ben.
Thank you son much Nigel, really appreciated. 👍
You didn't share camera settings, that would have been better
Why?
What difference would knowing the settings do? It’s a genuine question because I’m not sure how settings benefit anyone. The settings vary so much from hour to hour, different days, weather conditions, cameras and lenses, not mention polarising filters, the variations are near endless. My recommendation would be never to follow settings from someone else, work them out for yourself… as a guild generally shoot the lowest ISO the conditions call for, keep to your lens best performing F stop, normally F9 to F14 and the exposure time will be based from that.
I think you came to a great realization about that location. The wonderful rock formations and the foliage would have been overshadowed by more water flow. As it was, the low flow provided a nice accent to the rocks and plants.
Thank you so much Bill, yeah it was a tough location but ended up enjoyable. Thanks again mate.
Looks like a great location. I'm definitely feeling the need to visit some waterfalls now. The real trick is finding some that aren't overrun by people.
Yeah a beautiful location for sure. I agree, I always find the earlier the start, the less people. Hope all is well? 👍
Well ben brilliant photos spot on 😊
thanks Ben, great Job. Hier Novo Hamburgo city of south Brazil.
This video is much better than the monopod one, it addresses the question right from the get go. The answer is a resounding yes. Nice pictures.
2 mins in and you still have not made it to the meat of the video... gave up watching. Nice pictures, but ... where is the frigging monopod?
Yeah I wouldn’t bother with anymore then! Best if you stay away from my content.
@@BenMcDonaldPhotography A two minute ego driven intro, four mins and you're still not getting close to the answer to the question asked in the title. Well at least I nudged you over 800 views.
Awesome images Ben and superbly edited too. Just wish I could drag myself out of bed at that hour📷👏👏
Thank you so much, really appreciated. 👍
Splendid images, really worth the early get up. Lovely to see you back on TH-cam, far too long since we've last seen you.
Thank you so much, as always really appreciated. 👍
Fantastic video really makes me want to set my alarm for the mornign and get out there... maybe not at 04:00 though. Great pics and well put together.
Thank you so much Adam, haha yeah I don’t blame you, it will soon be winter again and a little easier. Thanks again mate and all the best.
Glad to see you back on here Ben. Short and sweet but well worth the wait. Great images 👍
Thanks Garry, yeah it’s been difficult to get out recently with other projects I’m working on taking up a lot of my time. Thanks again mate and all the best. 👍
Cracking photographs Ben. I have say I prefer the morning light even for black and white photographs. As you say it’s well worth the effort of getting up early just to have the place to yourself. Nice one mate 👍
Thank you so much Neil, as always really appreciated. 👍 Yeah that is a major bonus of getting up early.
Sunrise is the most perfect time of day! Some beautiful images there xxx
Thank you so much honey xxx
Fantastic video and still shots, I was at that exact spot last Sunday with my dad and lad. flying my drone. Nothing serious,
Thank you so much mate. Yeah it’s a brill spot. Hope things are going well out of the Stobart world?
Very early indeed!! But worth it. Great video Ben.
Thank you so much Nigel, yeah always hard forcing myself out at that time. 👍
Your title is a loaded question. I have a hard time pulling myself out of bed, however the results are often worth it when I do manage to get up. You managed to get some nice color, which is always a bonus.
Yeah they can be, it’s always a struggle but generally worth it, even just for the fresh air and alone time. Thank you so much Craig. 👍
Loved it. Must get up early and do this.
It’s generally always worth it. Thank you so much John. 👍
Nice! I really liked the time lapse images of the river and the bridge. The old barges and the morning colors along with the bridge make for great composition, too. And I certainly appreciate the solitude of the morning. But 0400 in the morning? I'm retired, no thanks, I live at much lower latitude.
Thank you so much Bill. Yeah the joy of summer sunrise! It's such more pleasant in the winter months.
If you just compare the 850 to the 7200 for landscape photography then I might agree that there might not be a great deal between the two in IDEAL situations. Apart from the much better dynamic range and far superior low light capabilities of the D850. But as soon as you look at moving objects such as sport, motorsport, wildlife especially birds in flight the 7200 isn’t comparable to the 850. The D850 is leaps and bounds in front with its much better focussing and tracking system. If you move over to mirrorless, perhaps the z8, you will still have huge files. It’s just the way things are going with ever better sensors. So no point in complaining about processing on your lap top. You’ll just have to invest in a faster lap top for any processing in the future as file sizes are never going to get any smaller. I loved your waterfall photos. But showing them on a TH-cam video will never show up the better quality of the 850. For that you need a good computer screen and be able to zoom in to truly see the difference in resolution and definition. I have a D850 and an old D3S 12megapixels! At A4 size on a computer screen you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. But zoom into 100 percent and the difference jumps out at you.
For ground-based photography, he suggests using a small bag of rice. It is good for macro photography. This is how I often use it. Greetings. th-cam.com/video/gwnCDXs7SCI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=lFyTtJoQc-PJhE1f
