Marcus Gilmore is the grandson of iconic jazz drummer Roy Haynes. Could it be that he had a teeny-tiny head start...? 😂😂😂
But between you and me, he is by far one of the most talented jazz drummers in the universe. ✌🏻😎
Probably the most melodic drum solo I've ever heard. Insane independence too! I've never seen anyone use dual kick drums like that with contrasting tone. So good!
The only other people that I've seen do this are Will Calhoun, Morgan Agren and Milton Graves, all in slightly different ways.

This is the kinda thing that makes me immediately go hop on my kit and try to use some of those ideas. Very inspiring.
Marcus approaches the instrument in a very unique way. Every time I listen to his drumming I feel that he transfers an audio piece of art to my ears.
It’s not often I comment on a drum performance, but that was truly incredible. I love it when a master like Marcus leaves you feeling inspired. Sonor, you guys are the best. 🙌

Not very often I can make it through a 7 minute drum solo these days. Not only did I make it through, I never once checked the time. lol. Well done!

*WHAT ARE THOSE MICS AND WHO MIXED THIS IN WHAT PROGRAM? That sounds PERFECT. Obviously the kit and cymbals are top notch, but capturing that in to digital audio is an entire different effort. I really liked this solo, kinda jazzy flurry of mindless tech and textures, amorphous and vague but different. But damn when a kit sounds as good as this audio, you can play pretty much anything and it will sound magical. Great job everyone!*

There are drummers that “force” you to listen using power, volume, and rudimentary prowess. But then there are drummers who “invite” you to listen using subtlety, sensitivity, and Imaginative storytelling. Marcus is definitely of the latter.

MG is so modern futuristic but old school in everything he does ie; different set ups to new add ons -entrance to tunes alter - to always closing his hi-hat clutch at the very end of any performance all with his own style of calmness cool collective and in control by far my favorite drummer today and yesterday because he pocesses both simultaneously just remarkable and his sound touch feel space dress is constantly EPIC!!! Love Him I'm going to see him play live first chance I get at age 63 nice to know that there's something Im super excited to experience behind the trap set and I've seen the best of them over my lifetime except baby Dodds Big Sid Sonny Grier to name a few I've spent a lifetime drumming and studying other drummers and percussionist at every level and style Marcus is everybody and more again he's incredible and has the personality to Boot God Bless Him prayers for a healthy long career 🙏

Killer sounding kit! One day I might have to get a Sonor kit just like this one. Marcus Gilmore is not a guy that I’m too familiar with at this point. That needs to change. Come to Canada for clinics if you can find the time in your schedule to make it here, mate. Keep on shedding as you sound fantastic!

Never forget the first time I heard him on Iyer's "Reimagining". Sounded so hip and fresh to me. That record holds up, too. By now this cat is a goddamn elder statesman at the ripe old age of what, 37? His musicality here is just delightful.
Not knockin bozzio, but... Here's an example how and why u don't need a million drums and bells... Drummers like Marcus can do this shit with just kick snare hat. Albeit, Marcus is using a lot more here and utilizing the elements hard without being the big show off. He just happens to be able to do it comfortably. Properly
What drumstick model is he playing with? I really enjoyed the way he develops his musical ideas and displaces them, morphs them in a truly natural flowing way.
Are you able to share what microphone configuration and audio interface you used for this recording? Incredible sound. Incredible playing. The translation from here to there is remarkable when you think about it, he plays in the room, he plays the drums themselves, that all is captured and translates beautifully with tone and soul. capturing the soul of the performance and setting the environment for the artist to express their most intuitive wisdom through the kit is the mark of a very very very good team of engineers and videographers. fantastic work, please tell me what you used!

It's things like this that bring to light how important it is that educators of young percussionists open their student's eyes (and ears) to dynamics and styles of music that lend themselves to softer touches. Rock drumming is fantastic for developing stamina and getting your stress out, but there is musicality in percussion and kit work that can be achieved with the lightest of touches and the skilled application of finesse. Beautiful solo, Mr. Gilmore.
