I have both fat 60gb launch model & slim cech2504a 160gb. Both are amazing and working without problem. Changed thermal paste in both and both are working perfectly.
I love the first ps3 I got it the first week and it still works great! and I am still in love with the design. The letters remind me or spider-man lol. and the backwards compatibility will always be a god sent. And I think i'm the only one who likes the glossy look rather then the mat finish.. I don't feel up my device lol.

You forgot to mention that the older ps3 "fat" version had backwards compatibility and a chrome detail. I personally prefer the older gen. The new model cost less than the older model did but it lost the memory card ports, backwards compatibility, nice shiny look, and touch sensitive buttons. The only noticeable upgrade was the energy and hard drive, and the hard drive can be manually upgraded on the older model. I think you get more bang for your buck with the previous 80/60 gig versions.
It really comes down to the serial number. CECHA are 60gb and the PS2 CPU CECHB are 20gb and also have PS2 CPU CECHC are 60gb, but use emulation to play PS2 games(not as good as the real CPU) CECHE are 80gb and use emulation. All these models have 4 usb ports to help you recognize them. Anything later than these have no backwards compatibility. Also, the PS2 emulation is not much worse than real ps2 CPU. Hope this info helps you.

The larger PS3 is the only machine I would describe as a "sexy beast." The main factor, aside from physical appearance, for me when I bought a PS3 was heat/loudness. But the big PS3 has been running fine for me and I just make sure to give it room to air out.
It didn't have a PS2 in the PS3 fat, it simply had backward compatibility so it must have included some more chips possibly increasing the girth of it :P

It works on the fat one, I like how this video failed to mention that the older designed one plays both Ps3 and Ps2 games. Old fat PS3 plays PS2 games also.
The fat model was a mistake for Sony because as a console it's not profitable unless marketed like a PC so they had to cut down on material costs and remove features which led to the slim models to make them more affordable yet still profitable in the console market. Of course retailers will rip you off because it's a model that has limited availability. I got the original 60gb fat model for £50 on ebay, only had to replace and remarry a bluray drive (£70 total).
PS3 fat with 4 USB inputs are backward compatible with PS2 game discs. But PS3 fat with 2 USB inputs are not. All PS3 slim are not backward compatible with PS2 game discs but can still play PS2 games purchased from the Playstation store. Both PS3 fat & slim are backward compatible with some PS1 game discs.
Finally, the NTSC launch models, the CECHAxx(60gb) and the CECHBxx(20gb) have hardware based PS2 backwards compatibility. The CECHCxx(PAL 60GB) and the CECHExx (first NTSC 80gb) models have software based PS2 backwards compatibility, which resulted in many games becoming incompatible. The rest do not have any PS2 backwards compatibility
If you're buying a ps3, buy the fat 60gb and 20gb ps3 because it had card readers, ps2 compatibility,four usb ports,touch sensitive buttons, and the power switch in the back.
@TheiPodKid the reason they have physical buttons on the slim is because over time on the Phat version with the touch pad would not work , it happened to my friend it was expensive to fix it
@GORNIAK47 i found some things off with your contrast of the two models. The other OS option has been removed from the fat version with firmware updates. you could still run another other you just wont be able to access psn or play any new games. Most people dont turn the power switch off in the back so its always on perpetual standby. And the Fats, as beautiful as they are, have a tendency to Yellow Light after a while because of the heat generated. Not having to deal with YLOD is a real plus.
the ps3 would have sold more than all the consoles of this gen, if it wasn't "$599 US dollars!" upon release. (It still echoes in my head to this day.) The ps2 was the cheapest DVD player at the time of release, which was a big selling point. now if it was like "$199 US Dollars!" it would have sold more than all the other consoles combined. But greed always kills it.

I used to have a 40gb ps3 but later on traded it in for a new slim ps3 and I think its much better imo.Its alot more quiet my old ps3 fan used to get louder as soon as I turned it on for no reason.

I have ps3 slim and its amazing. I dont like that they dont have the glossy finish anymore. it is the same system but the glossy coating just completes it. It has the same graphics if not better and we switch it from our 40 inch hdtv to our 32 inch LED tv all the time and the size or weight doesnt bug me and my 2 bros. at all.
It is worth like 350 dollars new and when you buy it you get what you pay for . And trust me . Some peopole had it since launch day and it still works perfect .

I'm buying PS3 Fat 80gb for the ability to install other operating systems & I personally think the fat looks waay better than slim! The greater power consumption does not bother me in the slightest, and neither does the apparent louder fan. As long as it's no louder than my 360 idc!

I want to get the ps3 fat 80 gb and I have read that there is a power switch on the back and touch sensitive power and eject buttons on the front. For the power in the back, could you just leave it on or would you have to turn the power button off in the back every time you quit playing? I would like it if I could just hit the button in the front to turn it off and on or would I have to do the switch in the back? I have a tight spaced area so this kind of matters to me. Thanks!

My 80gb ps3 stopped working (it wouldn't turn on), it was a good piece of hardware lasted me four years. Now I gotta cough up 250 bucks to buy a slim... Never got to finish paying Max Payne 3 :/

I actually decided to buy an xbox 360 but due to the famous RROD issue i started my research again to find that ps3 has greater features than the xshit.
thing that bothers me is when you said that you cant turn the ps3 off, when you can instead of 2 buttons well control power buttons, is that the bs3 slims are in one button instead of 2 buttons both consoles are off but one makes sure its off as a secondary power button for the ps3 fat, the ps3 slim has one button to control it so your saying of your sytems always running on the ps3 is wrong

You didn't mention that the PS3 slim has a different cord for the power supply. You can use your PS2 power supply for your PS3.
People allways argue over ps3 is better than 360 i got a ps3 but if i had a 360 as well that would be cool id find time to play both

Can't decide whether to get phat for slim. On one hand, 1/2 the weight and 35% less power? Is that a big deal? On the other hand, PS2 compatibility!

the fat one looks better but gets easily overheated and eventually damaged ps3 slim is very well built and is really strong no overheating issues also
