I live in both cities, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, being a Caucasian / European. I hold residency in both and honestly, each of these cities / countries has its own character. Bangkok is way more intense, rowdy, noisy and brutal, whereas Kuala Lumpur is more laid back, traffic is less congested and the people are actually smiling more in KL, than in the land of smiles / Bangkok. Both are located in the tropics, hot and humid all year around. Both suffer at times from bad pollution / haze and costwise there isn’t much difference either, Bangkok being more expensive (double), when it comes to housing. And even though Thailand is predominantly Buddhist and Malaysia predominantly Islamic, religion is more within the people’s minds, than it is on the street or in regulations. You will not be confronted in any way with any religious rulings or dealings, if you choose not to be around a mosque or a temple. Malaysians in general are laid back and friendly, hospitable and interested to meet foreigners, with a good command of English, whereas the Thai in general are a bit more reserved and English is not widely spoken everywhere. When it comes to the stereotyping of sex tourism, of course Bangkok is in the face, but don’t be mistaken, Kuala Lumpur has its’ massage parlours and prostitution as well. It is just less visible, but it is there, when you look for it. Foodwise, Malaysia may have more variety and a diverse palate, whereas Thai food is, well, Thai food. Both countries love their spicy dishes and you’re in food heaven, if you like hot, bold flavours.
Thanks for the detailed comment! We’ve actually been considering living in either Bangkok or KL for a year. We have a good feel for Bangkok after spending a month there, but we only spent 4 days in KL so we aren’t as familiar with it. Which city do you end up spending more time in?
@@SeanGranseeTravel put it like this: I am always happy to come to Bangkok, but also happy to leave after a while, whereas I am always happy to come to KL and not really wish to leave so much. I think one of the biggest differences between Malaysia and its neighboring countries that is worth pointing out is the crime rate... because Malaysia banned drugs and monitored the use of alcohol, you can see the crime rate is pretty low over here... Malaysia just listed as one of the safest countries in the world, so we don't mind if we're underrated, just keep it that way.
Thanks to the Islamic regulation in place where non-muslims can't go full chaos like in Thailand. To the Muslims in Malaysia, they call it the blessing from Allah (Rahmatan Fiil Alaamiin).
@@apuspeak8764 What a vile statement but pretty much expected from a Malay exposed to the biased teaching of state school. The last time there was full chaos here was in 1969 when you Malays started the race riots.
Tourism in malaysia is not the biggest thing for us. So we do not care much who wants to visit us and for how long. Our main revenue is from oil / gas and manufacturing. But due to multi cultural environment , our food is more varied.
Yeah, Malaysia definitely feels like more of a self-sustaining economy. I feel like Thailand would struggle quite a bit if all the tourists stopped coming, but that doesn't feel like the case in Malaysia.
@SeanGranseeTravel gdp per capita, singapore, Brunei, malaysia are the top 3 although thailand and indonesia have good gdp in asean(2nd and 1st biggest economy)
This comment is totally untrue as we are actively promoting our country as the main tourism centre in asia hence we have the tagline of malaysia truly asia and the income generated from tourism is huge so no one in their right mind would undermine tourism to their country
Sean, thank you for promoting a bit bout malaysia. Actually malaysia is not lacking of tourist annually from statistic view. It is just because you dont see crowd of westerner tourist all over the place in malaysia. Malaysia never promoting tourism for bacpacking or budget tourist but targeting more on retirees, family, long term vacation etc. malaysia has the highest number for muslim tourist and traveller. Malaysia also promoting targeted group most from china, japan, korea. Thats why you dont see much tourist because the most tourist is asian mostly neighbouring country indonesia, phillipines, thai and many muslim countries tourist especially middle eastern tourist that flocking and targeting but the country. It is not that we not promoting to westerner, but the westerner is more on solo travelling and we focus for long term vacation for westerner traveller with nomad bisa, mm2h program, 90 days visa free for most western countries etc. Foreighner wont be able to distinguish whose local and whose tourist in malaysia because they all look the same as the malaysian because we have many local malay, chinese, indian even arabs and speak their languages also. Thats the unique about malaysia with tagline " MALAYSIA TRULY ASIA"😂😂😂😂
We glad that tourists come to stamp their visa and stay one or two weeks in Malaysia before their venture back to the preferred touristy country, and Malaysia will forever underrated for tourists, people in Malaysia will happily live forever
I think Street Food here is really more towards food you get from Street where there's usually no or very little seats and probably we usually called it as Roadside stalls (because they literally open on the road side). These food are usually has less value for your money and also like its more of snacks/finger food with less complexity and depth and its easier to prepare or eaten (while you walk) or enjoy back at home. We have these as a "Market" which we called Pasar Malam (Night Market) or Pasar Pagi (Day Market) which maybe closely similar to Street Food which you should explore as almost each Garden/Taman/Housing area has their own once a week Night Market. I don't think its any less impressive than Thailand Street Food if not more impressive. Also, we do have Food Trucks as well that is closely related to Street Food. However, since Malaysia has also a lot of variety of food that has more depth (than just snacks/finger food) that can be properly enjoyed, These proper meals would need to be better enjoy with seatings. For these with some sort buildings we called them Hawker Stalls (or Hawker Center if its a big group of Hawker Stalls) or Food Court (especially in malls) or locally we called it "Kopitiam" especially for chinese and "Warung" I think for Malay sort of very simplified / cheap food. I think these are meant to be more "Comfy" than "Street" and gear towards value meal than Street Food. Of course, we definately have pricer Cafes and Restaurants. Personally, I think food in Malaysia definately is better in terms of varieties and types of food and taste flavour while the ones in Thailand are more towards Spicy and Sourish. Also, you can easily find Thai food in Malaysia as well especially big cities like KL as well as Northern Parts of Malaysia near Thailand. Except of course those some really unique ones where its not easy to be found even in Bangkok (like Northern Thai Food or rural area recipes).
So pround to be malaysian cause multicultural..I been 68 country..malaysia is the best, and the food we have many choice like Chinese,Malay and Indian food and cheap!😂

Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Party in Thailand as its wild and friendly but still lawful. Live in Malaysia as its genuine and warm, with excellent quality of life. Work in Singapore, as its a disciplined, clean factory with good currency rates. Food is great in all 3 but overlaps here and there with minor differences. Just avoid talking about religions or the monarchy to the locals and ur set for a good time.
The locals regularly slag off the royal families quite openly, just not their's. The Malays also quite readily speak of their dislike of no Muslims and Chinese in particular and constantly boast their religion is superior.
As a travel destination, Malaysia is not geared towards tourists. As a result, Malaysia lags behind Thailand and its citizens are not as focused on tourism as those in Thailand. When it comes to amusement, even Malaysians chose Thailand, as evidenced by the country's greatest number of tourists visiting Thailand.
Malaysia isn’t geared towards backpackers and dirty old men with predilections, and that’s how we like it. Sex tourism isn’t one of Malaysia’s attractions, and that is why we Malaysians can travel to the EU’s Schengen Area and China visa-free, unlike Thailand, the Philippines, and most other parts of Asia. Only Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and HK are accorded that privilege.
I disagree with u. There are lots of tourist destinations. Our tourism industry just isn't geared towards party or sex tourism. We have other stuff to offer. Just like how Europeans go to Spain for party & they go to the UK or France for history. They both have different tourism products. Same goes for Malaysia & Thailand.
@@secrets.295 - You may disagree, but as a Malaysian, I would rather explore what other countries have to offer. Almost all of the southeast Asian countries I have visited are fascinating to me, even though some of them are less developed than our own. In terms of cuisine, historical sites, and the warmth of the people, I still prefer Thailand.
Remember that Malaysia is under Islamic law, so behave yourself. I don't drink so no prob there. Legal weed is never good for society. How many stoned people do we want around? I do remember some of that Thai stick that was going around in the 70's. That stuff is no joke. Friend's girlfriend, not used to it, started praying after smoking some. I would feel more safe in Malaysia as a general rule, but i like the Thai people.
Thailand is easy to recognize because the country offers free sex, cheap alcohol and free smoking of marijuana. For those who want to have fun, especially singles, Thailand is seen as a big win. Unlike Kuala Lumpur in the existence of a liberal Muslim country, there are special laws for Muslims only but they do not restrict the freedoms of other religions, including drinking alcohol, massage parlors, gambling and others. For those with families, Kuala Lumpur is a city suitable for children.
If you are looking for booze, party, sex, you will be better served in Thailand. Malaysia is for more family oriented tourists. Malaysia is underrated. Better to keep it that way.
Tell that to those Malaysian and 30+ millions visitors who went there. Yeah, they only went there for those reasons. They are all horny tourists and wanna party and have sex all days. What a logic 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Isn't better for malaysia to become noticed and more well-known globally rather than being under-rated, as long as it is not over-rated. Would you rather your country is regarded as mediocre, not worth visiting?
@@secrets.295 Not necessarily. I believe the country has done a lot to market Malaysia globally, but we're conservative and do not offer the same tourism brands as Thailand & the Philippines. Why do you have to worry whether they are rich or budget tourists while they have flied over the ocean to boost your tourism industry? They use money not blank paper to pay for traveling. And expected that in 2024 Thailand will have 100 billion USD revenue from tourism industry.

I went to Kuala Lumpur last year with a friend, and it was really boring with not much to do. It’s not great for tourists-more for locals, I think. The people there are unfriendly compared to those in Taiwan, Thailand and Japan, where people are much more welcoming. Malaysia just isn’t for me.
In short, Bangkok is great for decadence and good food, and Malaysia is great for families and great food. If you want to know why Malaysia is never reported on by western media, all you have to know is Malaysia is a beautiful, very safe and family friendly country that happens to be predominantly Muslim.

Bravo, nothing's a miss in your brief checklist bro except these 3 👇: No. 0.5) Sex Tourism of all ages and types - Thailand is 100% unbeatable at this compared to Malaysia especially for the American and European men of all ages. No. 1.5) Safety - Malaysia's streets are far safer at any time of the day especially at night compared to Thailand's as carrying any type of weapon is illegal in Malaysia especially illegally owning a gun (usually smuggled from Thailand) that carries a death penalty if caught. No. 8) Accommodation accessibility & affordability - Maybe you elaborate further on this as a tourist. As a local, I prefer a "homestay" compared to a hotel. No. 9) Transportation - No issue if in a big city in Malaysia, mass transportation is good and cheap.
It's not underrated though. Infacts, it's just less popular than Thailand in particular. During the 1990s, Malaysia is known as the most visited country in ASEAN.
Not because of Muslim country. The gov took an advice from ministry of health department & other departments or agencies. Not to promote cigarette & booze. So they're highly taxed. However visitors enjoy cheaper booze at certain areas such as free duty area.

We Malaysian n Singaporean n Brunei don't not to be rated🌹🦧🙊🪭
This comment is totally untrue as we are actively promoting our country as the main tourism centre in asia hence we have the tagline of malaysia truly asia and the income generated from tourism is huge so no one in their right mind would undermine tourism to their country
But can we agreed that if we keep this behaviour, we are the lose one

Ya.....keep it under rated....we love it that way....❤❤❤
Malaysia is truly Asia. Let's come and visit Malaysia. Lots of thing you can find here in Malaysia.
We glad that tourists come to stamp their visa and stay one or two weeks in Malaysia before their venture back to the preferred touristy country, and Malaysia will forever underrated for tourists, people in Malaysia will happily live forever
Just 1 day actually cause hub flight

Yeah, Malaysia is good. No weed.
Sex tourism, alcohol n drugs are a big no no in my country, keep it that way for betterment. My country Malaysia is a place best for raising a family.
Bangkok is expensive city...kuala lumpur much cheaper
The tourist group are not allowed and regulated, not to overwhelm tourist and be more respectful
Its ok. We dont wanna be a party country.
KL is the top 8 visited city in the world, ahead of Tokyo, Rome, Barcelona to name a few...
Malaysians love to go Thailand because of the food

Betul, thailand ada tiga "S", malaysia cuma ada dua jer which isn't a bad thing, work it out!

Tell that to those Malaysian and 30+ millions visitors who went there. Yeah, they only went there for those reasons. They are all horny tourists and wanna party and have sex all days. What a logic 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I've rather let my country being underated and let Singapore and Thailand being overated. We Malaysian like it that way.
Underrated means complacent. Don't settle for complacency, always strive to go global.
Isn't better for malaysia to become noticed and more well-known globally rather than being under-rated, as long as it is not over-rated. Would you rather your country is regarded as mediocre, not worth visiting?
@@secrets.295
Not necessarily.
I believe the country has done a lot to market Malaysia globally, but we're conservative and do not offer the same tourism brands as Thailand & the Philippines.

The words of Allah SWT:

Bravo, nothing's a miss in your brief checklist bro except these 3 👇:
No.

Good to know! I haven't really been anywhere in Malaysia outside KL, Penang, and Ipoh, so I wasn't sure.
