How We Saved 64% By Switching From Europe To Asia
In this video, I break down the surprising financial differences between our travel experiences in Europe and Asia. Last year, Lexi and I spent over 4 months in Europe, averaging a monthly expenditure of $1,600 per person on transportation and housing. Fast forward to this year in Asia, and we managed to reduce our spending to under $600 per person each month. That’s a 64% decrease!
But here’s the twist: it's not just about Asia being cheaper than Europe. These two continents are vast, with diverse economies, and you can't generalize the costs. Instead, the key lies in how we traveled smarter in Asia compared to Europe. From long-term stays and weekend trips to planning strategies, I’ll share the five major reasons why we spent more last year and how we adjusted our tactics to save significantly this year.
Monthlong Stays: The Airbnb Trap - Why longer rentals in Europe weren’t as budget-friendly as expected.
Weekend Trips: Hidden Costs Unveiled - How spontaneous, cheaper weekend adventures in Asia made a difference.
Overplanning: Flexibility Wins - The financial downsides of locking in plans too early in Europe and how we embraced spontaneity in Asia.
Destination Focus vs. Cost Focus - Shifting our planning from must-visit places to cost-effective options.
Traveling with a Dog: The Unseen Expenses - Navigating the challenges and costs of having a pet on the road.
Plus, a sneak peek into our future travel plans in Da Nang, Vietnam, and a critical look at why food in Asia tends to be cheaper than in Europe.
Hit the like button if you find these insights helpful, and don't forget to subscribe for more travel tips and stories. Check out my other video on food costs across continents to further your savings on the road. See you in the next adventure!

thailand tourism industry is initiated for overseas tourists, but Malaysia’s was to fulfil local tourists’ needs (except Borneo nature tourism) and it still is. Overseas tourists are of course very much welcome. May be there is one of the reason Malaysia tourist spots look different from Thailand.

I was just to book flight to SE Asia but after reading Bali Sun news online very scary the Western tourists are targets by individuals hit and run while waking some have BRAIN damage some broken bones even if on scooters they make you to have accidents reason ongoing war in Gaza Bali increases security on the roads and recommends before coming to Bali to take full comprehensive insurance so it's risky to come to those popular destinations for Westerners and that is understandable people are angry what is going on in Gaza to Palestinian people

Although underrated Malaysia still in the 14th spot of most visited countries in the world (while Thailand in 8th spot). Of most visited countries in Asia, Malaysia being No.4 (after China, Thailand and Japan), while in Southeast Asia (of 11 countries) Malaysia becomes No. 2 (just after Thailand). Although Thailand is one step ahead, Malaysia not bad, isn't it?

Airbnb is the riskiest way to book places unless you can see it first. Agoda is much better and you can cancel. I live not far from where you were walking in Phra Khanong. Bangkok is not cheap except street food and some rentals. Everything imported very expensive. You are right flexibility is key. I've live in Bangkok 3 years but I am thinking of leaving because everything is a pain in the ass lately.

Have you found longer term stays on Agoda? We use Agoda for our short stays, and it’s great. But when we want to stay somewhere for a whole month, we usually look at Agoda and Booking but usually find a place we like better on Airbnb.

    • @ShadyD365
      @ShadyD365 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@SeanGranseeTravel Yes they have discounted longterm stays. I was just looking at Chiang Mai and a long terms stay was 47% off. Take that with a grain of salt but yes there are long term deals. I use Airbnb only if I already am familiar with the place or there is no other option. Especially in the USA the fees are crazy. No way in hell would I book longterm at an Airbnb from another country not knowing what it was. The photos are deceiving to say the least. I always stay 2-3 days at a hotel when I first travel for rest and get my bearings then figure it out.

I think Street Food here is really more towards food you get from Street where there's usually no or very little seats and probably we usually called it as Roadside stalls (because they literally open on the road side). These food are usually has less value for your money and also like its more of snacks/finger food with less complexity and depth and its easier to prepare or eaten (while you walk) or enjoy back at home. We have these as a "Market" which we called Pasar Malam (Night Market) or Pasar Pagi (Day Market) which maybe closely similar to Street Food which you should explore as almost each Garden/Taman/Housing area has their own once a week Night Market. I don't think its any less impressive than Thailand Street Food if not more impressive. Also, we do have Food Trucks as well that is closely related to Street Food. However, since Malaysia has also a lot of variety of food that has more depth (than just snacks/finger food) that can be properly enjoyed, These proper meals would need to be better enjoy with seatings. For these with some sort buildings we called them Hawker Stalls (or Hawker Center if its a big group of Hawker Stalls) or Food Court (especially in malls) or locally we called it "Kopitiam" especially for chinese and "Warung" I think for Malay sort of very simplified / cheap food. I think these are meant to be more "Comfy" than "Street" and gear towards value meal than Street Food. Of course, we definately have pricer Cafes and Restaurants. Personally, I think food in Malaysia definately is better in terms of varieties and types of food and taste flavour while the ones in Thailand are more towards Spicy and Sourish. Also, you can easily find Thai food in Malaysia as well especially big cities like KL as well as Northern Parts of Malaysia near Thailand. Except of course those some really unique ones where its not easy to be found even in Bangkok (like Northern Thai Food or rural area recipes).

I live in both cities, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, being a Caucasian / European. I hold residency in both and honestly, each of these cities / countries has its own character. Bangkok is way more intense, rowdy, noisy and brutal, whereas Kuala Lumpur is more laid back, traffic is less congested and the people are actually smiling more in KL, than in the land of smiles / Bangkok. Both are located in the tropics, hot and humid all year around. Both suffer at times from bad pollution / haze and costwise there isn’t much difference either, Bangkok being more expensive (double), when it comes to housing. And even though Thailand is predominantly Buddhist and Malaysia predominantly Islamic, religion is more within the people’s minds, than it is on the street or in regulations. You will not be confronted in any way with any religious rulings or dealings, if you choose not to be around a mosque or a temple. Malaysians in general are laid back and friendly, hospitable and interested to meet foreigners, with a good command of English, whereas the Thai in general are a bit more reserved and English is not widely spoken everywhere. When it comes to the stereotyping of sex tourism, of course Bangkok is in the face, but don’t be mistaken, Kuala Lumpur has its’ massage parlours and prostitution as well. It is just less visible, but it is there, when you look for it. Foodwise, Malaysia may have more variety and a diverse palate, whereas Thai food is, well, Thai food. Both countries love their spicy dishes and you’re in food heaven, if you like hot, bold flavours.

The Indian population is actually not huge. Only about 6% from the official gov data for 2023. Chinese is about 20%. Rather you might see more or less concentration of the ethnicity base on the state that you're in or the place. Like in KL, most of them that you may have mistook for Malaysian Indians were actually foreign workers from either India or Bangladesh. States like Penang has a high concentration of Malaysian Chinese so it's the best place to enjoy Malaysian Chinese food.
