  • This video is a comparison of NKP 587's whistle over the years. The engine wore 2 whistles over its 15 years in excursion service, the 1st being its original NKP 5 Chime, which it wore from 1918 as built until 1989 when it was retired & the 2nd being the NKP 5 Chime off of sister engine, NKP H6-d Mikado 624 which it wore from 1991 until 2002. 587's bell was omitted from this comparison as has remained the same since it was built in 1918. For a few of the 1989 NRHS Convention excursions, no. 587 wore the whistle from N&W Mastodon 433 (which was omitted from this comparison video) This video serves as a sequel to the NKP 765 Whistle & Bell Comparison made back in 2018 which can be seen here: • NKP 765 Whistle and Be...

    Out of the two whistles, I prefer the second one. Mainly because it sounds better, I heard it a lot whenever I watched the 587 dvd I own, and I think it suits 587 more that the other 5 chime.

    I honestly like the original screaming NKP 5 Chime whistle during 1988 and 1989. It kind of reminds me of a V10 engine with the way you can hear it scream in the distance as the locomotive goes by. But the second NKP 5 Chime also sounds amazing. You can never really go wrong when it comes to a steam locomotive's whistle in my humble opinion.

    1:12 the best (in my opinion) recording of that whistle. How are we so sure that the Polar Express whistle came from Sierra Railway 3 and not from 587? The tones match up perfectly to the Polar Express whistle.

    I'd never seen the clip at Ravenna, probably the first time since '02 anyone has heard the whistle.

      I'm in the same boat too. I've been in the territory of ITM my whole life, visited the museum many times when it was open & rode the train several times over the years. I unfortunately also never have had the chance of seeing 587 run. I also have spent the last few years researching about ITM & have retain an all-time Roster & a disposition list of ITMs equipment. Since 2020, I've been shooting video of the NPE with the former ITM equipment in the train since I never had the chance to document ITMs trains in any substantial quantity (besides a few shots here & there.) One of these days, I'll make a show out of the NPE stuff I have.

      587 had 2 main whistles during its revival career, and both are NKP 5 chimes. As for what was on it from the factory or during its years with the LE&W and NKP, one can't be sure. But throughout the 90s and 2000s 587 wore the non-cracked NKP 5 chime from 624 and is the one heard in 2021

      @SouRwy4501Productions 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, Japanese 5 chime whistles are based on early designs for the Nathan 5 chime whistles, so it’s not too hard to find similarities. The main differences are the materials used to make the whistles, and the valves used to activate the whistles. Instead of having a Nathan poppet valve, the JNR 5 chime has a more standard Crosby style valve.
