My family on my dad’s side is from Okinawa, Japan. It’s a somewhat lesser known place for reasons that are kind of complicated, but I’ve always appreciated having Okinawa as part of our family’s story.
I grew up with things around me that I took for granted - food, clothing, art, books, music - all of which signaled that my family once belonged to some other place - and moreover, that we brought some of that place with us wherever we went.
In that way, I think culture is a window into the broader truths of human existence. Each of us carries the stories of the people who came before us, and how the things they passed on (or didn’t pass on) shaped who we are. The joys, pains, accomplishments, failures, disappointments, and triumphs of our families and communities play a huge role in shaping who we are.
Take some time today to reflect on where you’ve come from and who you come from. Find what you have to be thankful for, and identify the places where hard lessons might be learned.
Then, step forward and carry the torch that was passed to you.
