- Gina Gogean (ROM) tried everything to win this competition.
After this strong floor routine the judges decided to give her a 9,800 and finished 2nd in the All Around - only 0,007 behind Shannon Miller from the United States of America.
She was one of the greatest ever
But I wished she would have had the chance to get a better guy (or girl) to do the choreography - it was so tough to watch the girls from Romania in the 90's doing their dance elements on Floor (but also on the Balance Beam)!
Gina was so unfairly criticised and I have no idea why. People say 'she never smiled' - so what? I very much admired her stoicism and considered it a quality (certainly a rarity these days). Then people would criticise her lack of artistry - well I have no idea at all what people were looking at as I thought she had loads of it. Not to mention her tumbling was absolutely fantastic and she nailed virtually all of her landings. Gina Gogean was one of the greatest gymnasts of all time and unlike others - just quietly got on with it!

Her artistry got worse and worse as time went on. By 1996 and 1997 her gymnastics was very bare bones. Not much to gawk at. Artistry went down the tubes, as well as her difficulty across all appartus.

This is the only time I have ever seen gogean smile after performing a routine 😄
And even though, she came in second - ever so close.... only 0,007 points behind Shannon Miller. 😱

Up until this time, tumbling in Romania was also compact and beautiful.
How is it nowadays? I don't watch the current competitions anymore. Is Romania still on the map when it comes to elite gymnasts and medal success?
You were allowed to repeat a tumbling run back then? She had two tucked double backs, albeit with slightly different preceding entries.
I think it was allowed for the reasons you mentioned, but I am not sure about it anymore.
Maybe another viewer will solve this mystery for us. 😏😎
I think the code of points at that time may have allowed a skilled to be repeated so long as it was used in combination during one of the sequences. But I’m unsure since it’s been a long time.
Terrible gymnastics! Almost every Romanian after the 88 team was pretty awful and had zero artistry! They were gifted so many titles on every event!
Floor Exercise had a 'tumbling down' effect when it came to the quality of expression and choreography after '89 I would say. But I think it was not the mistake of the gymnasts. More likely the guy (or girl) who was responsible for that job. You saw it throughout the team for years to come... they all made those edged movements.... (also on the Balance Beam btw.)
When it came to the technical difficulties, the Romanian girls were still at the top.

I liked the music and I have to say even some parts of her choreography were nice (better than the years before) for example at 2:39
They had a rough time for a long period of time concerning their choreography skills.
What I liked a lot was, that she avoided the front tumbling - I was shocked when the COP rewarded those skills immensely and all the gymnasts (male or female) used those simple acrobatic skills to collect points. Even I was able to throw those in my younger years and that should say it all. 🥴🤐😄😁🤣

@@Boban1611 We talk about these gymnasts like they have a say in their routines but, especially back then, they did not.
