Your comment made me laugh. 😂🤣 RFA was actually the judge from West Germany.... it was ridiculously high! The system with the head judges didn't work either as far as I can see. To be honest.... I know it was the 'age' of high scores, and I truly love Yang Bo - but this score was not okay. She 'almost' fell on her dismount, which would have cost her half of a point. Just because she didn't fall, doesn't mean you can't deduct the 0,5 points. She made 5 severe steps to avoid putting her hands down to the mat. For each step, she should have been deducted with 0,1 at least.... you can do the math - half of a point would have been lost anyway.

I was amazed, that the Chinese coaches gave her chances over and over again. Inconsistency was always a reason to sort gymnasts out - not only in China but also other leading nations back then... I am thinking of Oksana Omelianchik from the USSR who was the World Champion in 1985, but only an alternate for the Olympic Games in 1988. The merit of a World Champion was not enough, you had to perform on point.... Yang Bo was lucky she was given a chance to participate over and over again, although she showed some nerves throughout the years.

The sport is a dangerous sport. Accidents will happen....

I just checked the competition... at least the videos I have uploaded by now. None of the gymnasts shown wore a national emblem on their leotards. Maybe it wasn't required?

I think training was quite tough in those countries. They surely were under a high pressure to perform perfectly for the glory of their nation.

She was indeed. I am happy, she got the chance to win a medal at the Olympic Games. It was just sad, that it wasn't the golden one.

Daniel Slivias was far better and considering that the uneven bars have been the weakest apparatus for the Romanians, Slivias had incredible talent.

Das ist sicherlich ein schwieriges Thema. Der Glanz und die Glorie bei den Weltmeisterschaften und Olympischen Spielen wurden nun einmal überschattet von den Dramen, die sich hinter den Kulissen abgespielt haben. Ich habe Interviews gelesen und auch ein Video auf TH-cam gesehen, in der nicht Dagmar Kersten - sondern Dörthe Thuemmler zu Wort kam. Es ist schon sehr schlimm, was diese Mädchen erlebt haben und mit welchen Langzeitwirkungen sie heute noch zu kämpfen haben. Ich bin aber auch überzeugt, dass andere Nationen den gleichen Weg gegangen sind, um Erfolge zu erringen. Da war die DDR sicherlich kein Einzelfall.

Naja... wurde halt im Westen geboren. Bin froh, dass ich das damals überhaupt aufnehmen konnte. 💙
