    "The real question in this is where was Alpine's loyalty to Oscar Piastri."
    And that there is why i believe Alpine has no ground to stand on in questioning Piastri's loyalty or integrity.

    Thank you, Luke & Autosport, for spending the time getting the detail needed for this video. I always felt that Alpine had dropped the ball (would seem many times), and with the amount of guilt that was being thrown at Piastri, it didn't seem that was a sign of a team that had a contract in place, so the CRB decision wasn't a surprise. What was a surprise was the behaviour of Alpine and how bad they handled this; I hope someone is fired over this, as blaming Piastri is just unfair. Once again, great job

    Just another proof how ruthless F1 can be, don't believe when a team talking about loyalty. People need to remember 2020 Checo was fired from Racing Point. Eventhough he was loyal driver for them and drive since they were Force India, but glad for him after that he gave them the only win and Red Bull contracted him.

      Absolutely, the Perez thing was absurd, but he obviously has not only tons of talent but "divine merit" as Buddhists like to say, for the Red Bull deal was more than deserved. And Aston Martin only going down the ladder on the constructors bunch must be somewhat sattisfying for Checo.

    This is the best analysis of this matter. The fact that Alpine thought it had a solid claim for a legally binding agreement on the strength of a heads of agreement that expressly stated was non binding, and then spent £500k + to argue this before the CRB tells you a lot about their management or advice they're getting!

    • @shanesimpson645
      @shanesimpson645 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The motivation appeared to be the fact Piastri was told while he was in the simulator that, he would be in the Alpine seat for the next 2 years, his response was to just smile at OS. Apparently, in private he claims he told them he wouldn’t be driving for them.

    • @hbrown689

  • @brienmiller1005
    @brienmiller1005 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Thank you for this. Alpine's actions were actually worse than you make out. They were intentionally jerking him around thinking that they could back him into a corner and get him to take essentially whatever they wanted to give him in the end regardless of the Term Sheet because he would really have no other option.
    And I hope people understand that this nonsense about loyalty and how much Alpine spent preparing him are just that, nonsense. Piastri rendered services for Renault and Alpine and was paid for that, period. Those costs were already incurred by Renault and Alpine. A future contract is just that, a contract for future services. Ask anyone, like me, who has negotiated new contracts between parties who already had a contractual relationship. The past is the past. It may be relevant to trusting or understanding the other party's needs, but that's about it. If Alpine had really seen PIastri as investment, they would have signed him, period. Alpine was looking ahead and assumed that Fernando would be in the car for 202, 3 but failed to consider a worst case scenario where they would need another driver for 2023. Alpine do not need to know specifically that Vettel would retire, Fernando leave, etc. Alpine just needed to consider a more general what if worse case driver scenario.
    Toto and others talking about the bad precedent this sets are concerned about one thing: getting and keeping control of young talent. That is it. They want that talent and don't want anyone else to have it. There are 20 seats in F1 and a lot more drivers capable of filling those seats than everyone would have you believe. Young drivers are easily manipulated and will work for cheap.If Bottas had performed, Russell would have been stuck in that Williams until his contract with Toto expired. Gasly is getting out of his Red Bull contract because they are going to get paid and Gasly will go to a team that Red Bull knows is not competitive.

    I wonder if Renault directors aren't berating Alpine F1 managers about this... something tells me they are. In retrospect, had they been less 'confident' and less arrogant throughout this process (and a bit smarter), perhaps the best move would have been dropping Ocon, and signing Alonso and Piastri on two year deals, and having Alonso mentoring Piastri in the process. Ever since the days of Alain Prost in the 1980s, Renault seems to systematically drop the ball as they have just done now.

I'm so glad the timeline is in the open, I hope some DR fans still able to use logic can see his post for what it was, a selfish play for monetary gain, with no regards for the hundreds of employees, who has worked so hard to provide a car more suited to him this year.
    It saddens me that people were so quick to spread hate for McLaren, just because DR is a popular personality, this is a sport at the end of the day and he is not delivering the points directly linked to salaries and future car development. I still don't understand why they were trying to keep alonso for so much. No offense to him, but Ocon, which is a rooky compared to Alonso, score the same amount of points than his team mate. I do understand that Alonso can bring some "professionalism" and "experience", but so does Alpine since they are a rebranding of the former Renault F1 team. They should have sufficient knowledge about how to built a competitive car and great race stratgies.
    On the other hand, Alonso is aging, bringing several disadvantages, which the majors are: (1) loss of physical capabilities (like reflexes, strengths, etc.) that are important for F1 racing considering the speed and g-forces applied, (2) risk of not being capable to adapt to the current and futur new cars.
    Even with track experience, there are plenty of example of young drivers that perform just better probably due to their younger physical shape and their lack of experience with former cars. I mean, the most striking example is ricardo and noris, but you could also see ocon and alonso, hamilton and russel, or even saintz and leclerc.
    Now, they had Piastri for year. he is not only younger, but just destroying the GP he was participating in, even driving better in F2 than actual F1 drivers when they were in the same league.
    Yet, for some reasons, Alpine decided to keep Alonso while they had that golden boy for years.
    In that regard, Alpine truely deserve their poor decision making, and I do hope they will learn from this experience. If you have an exellent driver, use it, don't let it go.

    Liberty Media are playing such games with the historic circuits. What is the point of an F1 season if it does not include the key circuits and swaps them with car park circuits in the US or the locations in the Middle East which come with unacceptable human rights problems.

      Yes and if McLaren are being the saints presented in this video, why they didn't just announce publicly since July 4 when they signed the almighty "Race Contract" with Piastri? If they are so fair and don't work dirty behind the scense, why keep it hidden for so long?

    • @sukispicer686
      @sukispicer686 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because there was no solid decision at that point. Piastri was signed as a reserve driver with the potential for a race seat, not as a confirmed race driver. And if they didn't know what was happening for certain with Daniel at that point they would have wanted time to make that decision and then give Daniel time to find a new seat before starting the chain of announcements

    • @mihaitmf
      @mihaitmf ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sukispicer686 They could've announced exactly that, the truth. That they signed a contract with Piastri for 2023 as a reserve driver and beyond 2023 as a race driver. Why couldn't this be announced if everything was clean and fair? But precisely the fact that they kept it secret and worked behind the scenes is what makes it suspect. Either Webber and the Piastri camp were playing at both ends, not making a clear commitment to either party, waiting for the best offer, or McLaren were doing something fishy with that contract or not telling Ricciardo. All I'm saying is that all the parties involved in this had their share of blame in how the whole situation turned out. Not how Autosport is trying to paint it in this video, that McLaren and Piastri's side did nothing suspect. Even if Alpine may be predominantly to blame, McLaren and Webber are definitely not 100% clean either, since they elected to not tell the truth and make that contract public from the moment it was signed.

    • @sukispicer686
      @sukispicer686 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mihaitmf I don't think it's entirely as simple as just making a contract public as soon as it's signed, though I totally agree it should be the way things go. Usually both teams relating to the driver need to be ready to make an announcement at the same time- one letting the driver go and one saying they're signing the driver, I can't remember a time in recent history it's been done differently. There's often some legal reasons too for not announcing things, so it might not be as simple as wanting to hide the truth. Piastri/Webber most certainly could not have announced it on their own, it's always done by the teams, so that at least is not their fault.
      Ultimately it's impossible to know what was going on inside both camps, but it definitely sounds like Alpine wouldn't have being willing to post that Piastri was no longer driving for them seeing as they posted the opposite depsite knowing he had signed elsewhere. Whatever the reason for that (maybe to keep the pressure on Alonso for his negotiations) it could have been a stalling point. Maybe McLaren were wanting to not put more speculation on Ricciardo whilst his seat was under pressure. Maybe everyone was being awful behind the scenes, we'll probably never know. I would just say that Alpine seem to have had a run of pretty bad looking decisions made recently (eg Prost being pushed out) in the run up and maybe this situation is just causing confirmation bias, but I do think they take the majority in not all of the blame. Again, not saying the others are definitely blameless but Alpine definitely made the biggest mess of anyone, and if Piastri hadn't been forced to write that tweet, who knows how this would have turned out.

      @mihaitmf ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sukispicer686 you made some good points and I agree with most of them, thanks for taking the time to reply.
      In the end it's an unfortunate situation which didn't help anyone. I still feel it could've been avoided if either party displayed more honesty and made the matters transparent a bit earlier. It's a shame because the only winner in all this is the press, who had a hot topic to write about. Alpine lost the most obviously, and paid the price for its mistakes. They lost both of its drivers, Alo and Pia, paid a lot of money as the contract dispute fees and, not least, its reputation has taken a massive blow. While Piastri's debut at McLaren is a bit tainted by this scandal, but what's more is he will face immense pressure next year to deliver. It cost McLaren a lot of money to make the seat available to him (the compensation paid to Ric) and the expectations are super high now.
      Let's see how it develops. Cheers!
