I’ve got a set of leathers autographed by fast Eddie.
What a joy it was to meet one of my American racing hero’s in person!

It was Lawson & Kawasaki superbikes that inspired my first street bike purchase in 1982, GPz 550. Been on Kawi's ever since.

I don’t have many heroes, but there was something about Mr. Lawson that has always grabbed my attention. Yes, multi time world champion and all of his incredible achievements aside, a true hero to me in every sense of the word. One of the coolest and humble bad asses that have ever lived. A true USA national treasure.

I was working in the oil fields in West Texas in my late teens/early-mid twenties. My local Kaw dealer had an 82 Eddie Lawson Replica on their showroom floor and for my 20th birthday I went in and paid cash for it and a matching Shoei helmet. I had one hell of a summer that year and so many great memories from that bike.
It was a great wheelie bike too!

I saw Eddie race the green #21 superbike four times and he won all four!
    Laguna '81🏆
    Seattle '81🏆
    Riverside '82🏆
    Laguna '82🏆
He also won the 250 race at Laguna in '81. That guy kicked some ass!

70's, 80's MC racing was a lot more mysterious back then there was no TH-cam or cheap videos, just magazines and an occasional race on TV

Eddie Lawson and Greg White thank you for the support here in America 🇺🇸. Great racers and supporters to the Racin Community.
I saw Eddie at Willow Springs and Riverside Ca. And he was very fast and smooth.
On tracks that had pebbles and dirt and heavy machinery. They are ones who made the bikes what they are today. Heroes!!!

Only been on the track once with Lawson, largely because he was in Europe before I got my pro card. It was 1982 while at Willow Springs when he just pulled into the paddock in a plain white van with a plain white ..I think an AMA class F1 bike in the back.
I was one of the riding instructors for the AFM new rider school, but I still managed to get in his way once during the superbike/F1 practice. No doubt Eddie was fast ..but he was shooting sparks thru turn eight just like everyone else. LOL
..It's nice to see Eddie's doing well.

It's weird that motocycle racing ins't that popular in the US with all the legends you guys gave to the sport. Roberts, Lawson, Spencer, Rainey, Schwantz and some more in recent years.

We have soooo many sports in the USA all competing for attention, and we bring so many more into prominence such as beach volleyball, snowboarding etc....

    • @monkmoto1887
      @monkmoto1887 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

That’s true, and things ebb and flow. Auto racing on both the road course and the oval used to be bigger than football. Motocross and suopercross were hyper popular in the 90s into the 00s too. Personally I think it’s because a lot of kids were raised by hippy dippy nonsense people this time around

I was at that race in Washington where Eddie went off the track onto the grass at close to 180 passing 3 lapped riders leaving spenser stuck behind them. I still talk about that move. It was the craziest wildest thing I ever saw anyone do intentionally.

In 1980 (I think) Eddie Lawson was to be a guest instructor with Keith Code's traveling motorcycle racing school that was going to be at Laconia NH closest to me. Eddie was relatively unknown at the time (I'd never heard of him before). Even though I really wanted to and planned to attend the school, I just couldn't go being fresh out of high school with a part-time job and a hungry 74 900 Kawi to feed lol. To this day that is one of the biggest regrets I have in my life! What an experience that would have been!

Eddie Lawson was and still is a true motorcyclist at heart. Whether he's on the track or off , street or dirt doesn't matter as long as you're on two wheels. Another honerable mention is Wane Rainey. Enjoy your retirement Eddie.

Seeing and more impactful, hearing Eddie lap a spirited demonstration race back in '17 made the trip up to Gilles Villeneuve's Montreal F1 weekend all worthwhile. Points out how dreadful today's V6 turbo with a mere 1.6 litre sound
