Such singers who are born once in a hundred years help us, modern listeners, understand and admire this "old-time"' genre.
I like how skilled cameraman in the 1950s slowly gets closer and captures his handsome face and sparkling eyes at the very end. This was the year I was born. Franco was at the top of his game here @ 37. If he was alive he’d be 103!
@@bobturnley2787 He wasn't past his prime, according to Corelli himself his best year was 1967 (and many critics). There are many good quality studio recording of him singing Nessun Dorma. I personally prefer those versions where he uses a diminuendo on 'spendera', it is really a personal touch that makes his rendition more interesting. I would like to hear him sing a more demanding aria before I make any further comments, but it's the same old story - many great voices are never heard!

Pavarotti is incredible but Corelli is truly something else. There's a lot of passion and something inextricably inexplicable behind his phrasing. I cried watching this, just out of this world!
Franco Corelli and Mario Lanza represent two of the lost treasures of the 20th Century. Their vocals were glorious and there stage presence immense. Thank you for helping to ensure that this lost treasure doesn't remain so. Bravo!

No words can express my shame that I never heard him sing before. By chance at 5 am in the morning I heard him. As good as any voice I have ever heard sing this aria. Very handsome man with a voice that is much bigger than I could imagine from his frame. When you hear Pavarotti sing Nessun you see where his power originates from. Mr Corelli, thank you for your rendition of Nessun. I can't imagine anyone singing it better.
Another that is not so known these days is Carlo Bergonzi. Check out Che Gelida Manina from his prime years. Magnificent. A sweetness of tone and effortless high notes.

My life is fulfilled by living and always being around famous opera singers, chorus (alot of them are not nice people), and musicians and fans. It is a truly interesting life, and i know how lucky I am this is my world

I was in love with Franco when I saw and heard him on film in Tosca. A book came out, I think by Stefan Zucker, and the revelations were extremely distasteful and I couldn’t write them here. I gave the book away. I felt myself it was a betrayal. Franco was stunning and probably might not have been too happy? However he still gives pleasure to his many followers and I am keeping his DVDs!🙏❤️
Pardon the intrusion, I'm stupid and have never heard of this person. He's great and the subtitles are fantastic. I never knew that iconic line was, "I will win". I am seriously glad I know that, and I'm not joking. I didn't know stars trembled. But, I'll bet anything the colors would have been stunning were we allowed to see them. It would have brought it to life; what a shame. What a great performance. He must have known how outstanding he was; he had to have known that. He knew he was gorgeous and talented. Not fair.

There are many better live performances of Nessun Dorma from Franco Corelli. Look for Nessun Dorma live in 1961, 1964 or 1966.

Always been a bit of a Gigli snob but I heard his Nessun dorma and it instantly became my favourite. An unequalled level of power and emotion IMO.
