- So I have to get this off my chest. A lot of negative comments and posts have been made about me lately, and I though I would set the record straight about some rumors out there about me.

I'm a prospector down in Washington. I hike the backcountry of the Cascades with a 45 lb pack on my back, camping in some the most inhospitable places in the PNW, working some flat-out dangerous sites. I think I can consider myself a "real" prospector and you, Mr. Dan Hurd, are the patron saint of prospectors as far as I'm concerned. I've learned a ton about technique, geology, and mining history from watching your videos and it would be downright heartbreaking if you got fed up and quit because of the internet haters. Your fans (your real fans) love you right back, buddy. KEEP DOING WHAT YOU'RE DOING!! You are the best!
I know, right? We watch because Dan is a moral man and those are few and far in between. He's a natural teacher and even though I have a geologist for a father and have prospected quite a bit, I still learn from Dan and I enjoy watching him triumph. He is the best

For those who mentioned I should not have used the term "Hate Speech", sorry, Hate Speech was probably a bad choice of words. (problem with unscripted video, I have to come up with words on the spot) Basically what I was trying to say is it was not constructive, or helpful or even just making a point, it was in a public forum designed to spread dislike or hatefulness towards a single person. *I have now edited that section out.*
You know Dan I do remember a couple different jealous guys in your comments! Like my Dad told me, he said son you will never please everyone! So just be you son because there is nothing you can do to change the way some people feel about you! Just be you and people that love you and respect you is all you need to worry about! Dan I'm an old man who during his younger years used to metal detect, gold prospect, and successful Gold dredge operating. Due to old age decreased mobility and severe arthritis I can no longer do what I loved. I follow your adventures all the time because my heart, spirit, and joy is right there with you. Only Dan Hurd can apologise for being trolled, the man is an absolute gem and deserves ALL the love and positivity that we give him. Canada please look after him because us Brits would happily take such a positive and caring family man. Sadly we don't have the gold or gems that'd get him excited but this man needs to be reminded of how brilliant he is!

I so enjoy sitting in the dirt and finding pretty rocks. Wasting my time sitting in the sunshine. Learned so much from you. Even found a teeny tiny bit of gold. Never going to get rich financially by doing this. My husband says the earth is a repository of our history. The riches I found in your example is a love of what is here and an appreciation of life. You know you are such a delightful resource of knowledge.❤

Likely, but most of us here supporting Dan fall into the same category, jealous/envious of his success and never touched a shovel. However, those intending to harm his rep and upset him are probably someone from a forum somewhere that see him as competition.

Brother, you don't ever need to defend yourself from these trolls. Most of them have yet to actually hold a pan in their hands, let alone finding something. You sir, are the cream of the crop, and that sir is why you have the other million of us watching religiously. Well done sir.

While true, flaming back is sensibly useless. I can never be jealous of someone else's achievements, simply because I didn't achieve it myself. Jealousy in itself is their karma. Put in the effort people! Whatever good you do.
A complainer once told me I was charging too much for a product, I contemplated the price and work involved. I ultimately thanked the person for making me think about it, because I realized I wasn't charging enough and RAISED the price $10.
I've been looking to start selling things online, doing research and all that. And from what I found I'm raising my prices the same amount at minimum, I also just didn't find things too close to what I'm making

You know something, Dan, none of what you do here is anything I was really I was interested is. Then one day, TH-cam decided I needed to see one of your video.
At first, I kept watching because of your personality and attitude. Then watching your excitement as you found a raw something, and turned it into a cool something. I know look at rocks differently, and imagine coming across a spot and finding some gold.
You are a true influencer, living your best life, doing what you love. And in the end, making money doing it.

Actually it's most likely envy. Jealousy comes from concern that someone will take what you have (like a wife or husband, job, something attained). Envy is you want what someone else has. People are envious of what Dan Hurd has achieved.
As a 63yr old woman from Washington DC, you drew me in on the first video I saw posted during the pandemic and I have been hooked ever since! You are a fantastic teacher who is passionate and totally genuine about your message. Your appreciation for the beauty of Canada and it's natural creations you share provides us a great respite from this crazy world. Conserve your energy, stop reading the BS that is posted and keep doing what you are doing. You are the honest, ethical guy we trust and want to see. You can't save every ignorant person who doesn't take the time learn, understand and empathize the hard work you do. With a 3 year old son who loves sitting down watching our "cool rock guy" it hurts. Seeing you out with your family and infectious enthusiasm towards exploration has inspired my efforts into taking my son out. Whether it's scouring creek beds for fossils or picking hunks of milky quartz out of a parking lot. My son lights up. This interest is physical science that, as a father, I could not have provided to my son without your guidance and positivity.

I have heard Mr Hurd talk about the negativity of some commenters and I can empathize with Dan's feelings.
I am always very pleased to see a new video drop. It's especially nice to watch your family prospecting outings
Dan provides wholesome educational content with an economic aspect that some folks like to criticize without merit.
Social media certainly has it's dark side, thanks for shedding light on your upsetting issues.

Dan, I’m a Christian man from Wyoming and I’m 43 yes old. Always had an interest in rock and arrow head hunting. I did a lot of it as a child. I now live in a large city in a different state and your videos have always intrigued and entertained me. Be encouraged that what your doing reaches many people and your joy and love comes through in every frame! We love you keep it up! May I also say I’m bald and red bearded so maybe I enjoy your videos because we are long lost relatives 😂.
I've also found that trolls are impossible to just "ignore". If only it were that easy. The one thing that has actually helped me to cope with negativity is to think a lot about my own identity and who I'm trying to be online. When I'm grounded in the reality of who I am it's easier to read a negative comment and sort it into different boxes. If they insult me saying I'm not a real scientist (in your case a "real" prospector), they're making a fool of themselves by pointing out the obvious as if it were a big secret. I'm happily not what they think I should be, which makes their accusation a little funny. Box 2 would be that they're saying something flat wrong and that's a little easier to just blow off because it has no basis in reality at all, and I don't have to second guess it because I'm clear on what is and is not true of myself. Box 3 is that they're just being mean, and that can be a tough one to swallow. It helps to flip the script in that case and think how miserable they must be to say such things. If you're feeling sorry for them it's easier to take what they say as being more about them than you, which is almost always the truth. The last Box is maybe someone is saying something that could actually be productive to hear, and in that case I might take the content to heart a little more carefully.
You're doing good stuff here. Next week I'll be teaching a group of kids how to pan and identify various stones, and many of your videos were a help in that. Thanks!

Dan my man. I don't watch your videos because I'm so interested in prospecting and collecting from the earth's bounty like yourself. I watch them for the character that you are and present for me the viewer. Your videos never fail to uplift my spirit. I love your tag line that you "hope to earn the viewers subscription" because in every video you make it shows that work for what you are hoping to earn. There is nothing fake about you Dan! I will continue to enjoy every video you make for as long as you keep making them. 😊

Some people need to worry about themselves. If someone doesn’t like what you post, what hobbies you have, etc, they don’t have to read your posts, watch your content, or pay any attention to you. I would dismiss/ ignore them. Have a thick hide. After all, if you’re putting it out there and making money at it, then you get good, bad, and whatever.
Here's the thing about trolls and their comments: Most of these people are complete losers with no life and no love. They spend their days playing games on big TV'S wearing just their underwear in mommy's basement "apartment".
They go from part-time job to part-time job, being frequently fired for under performing or mouthing off.
They experience no joy, and want to spread that to joyful people like you.
I completely understand your rant...it's just incredibly inspiring that you've only done this once, considering the amount of cruel and childish people commenting online.
Please don't let this infantile behavior discourage you from posting your entertaining and informative videos!

Dan, I used to tell my kids, when dealing with this same crap… “Don’t feed the monster, and it will die” Please don’t fan the flames of ignorance, giving these unimportant, unimaginative and severely uninformed people the satisfaction of responding. Take what you want and leave the rest… One time while debating with my oldest, he says “You should hear what your friends say about you” (I had an atv business and dealt with the same idiocy), I simply responded “Well, those really aren’t my friends now, are they”. Stay good Dan… take what you want and leave the rest.
Dan, I’m an older Engineer (in my 70’s) who has always wanted to pan for gold. I’ve had a major heart attack and multiple back surgeries that keep me from getting out and following my dream. I love your videos and tell your detractors to go to h.e.double hockey sticks!

Its apparent Dan has a on going battle to protect his livelihood from thieves, claim jumpers etc etc but he is generally a very aimable chap.....who ever has upset him must had taken the piss royally to upset such an easy going guy to the extent that its generated a video all on its own merit, poor guys working hard doing what he loves, couldn't take that from him no matter how poor and desperate i may be. Some have no shame.

I mean to be fair, what we see of Dan is his personally curated videos of himself in likely what he views as the best light. We are seeing Dan Hurd the TH-cam personality and not Dan Hurd the day to day person. This isn't to say that Dan is in the wrong, none of us have both sides of this story to say for sure, it's just saying that it's something we should consider when it comes to our favorite youtube personalities in certain situations.
Yep people are so cruel they would rather see him fail and stop altogether. I've had that in my career also as a carpenter.

I have watched every video of yours at least once and I have never seen anything in them as misleading or deceptive.
I began watching you when you were first started teaching your students how to make simple but effective working tools equipment and techniques for finding gold.
I have only spoken to you on the phone (this was probably 5 or so years ago). You were still trying to figure out things for yourself but graciously in invited me to go on and prospect to see if I wanted to buy one.
I have downloaded a great many of your video's to my tablet so when I'm out in the mountains I have a perfect teacher along with me.
I didn't realize you had so many followers but I'm guessing the negative crap comes from a very tiny fraction of us followers.
I may not have had the pleasure of meeting you in person but as a teacher/prospector l am positive you are honest generous and kind to prettier much everyone you encounter.
Like you have said and I know as fact, we only know a tiny bit of what you have to do to give us all the quality real life experiences out prospecting.

I wish stuff like that wouldn’t affect us, but we are all human. I watch your videos every week and it’s one of the highlights of my weekend. You have a very loyal following. Hey Dan, You earned my subscription long ago and How you handle these situations is why you have earned so many subscribers. You are a class act and anyone with good sense can tell that you are an honest man who loves sharing his passion of geology with others. Hey Dan! I’ve been following your channel since you were posting clips from your high school lessons and have learned so much from watching your channel since then!
Just note, I recently met an older retired guy who told me, “I have too much time on my hands and… I’ve never told anyone this before… but I spend most of my time $h*t-posting and trolling people online. It doesn’t even have to be a topic I’m familiar with. I just like getting a rise out of people.” And he proceeded to laugh about it.
That was the last time I ever talked with that guy.

Dan I come from a prospecting family, I started at 12 years old moving rock out of trenches for my father and uncle. I have prospected all across Canada for different companies. Once it’s in your blood you never lose the passion. I watch your video’s because of the passion you have. Your video’s portray the fun and passion you have. I am 68 now still going strong. You don’t need to explain yourself in my opinion, anyone who watches your video’s knows you are a man of upstanding morals and care about educating the new generation. Keep up the good work

Dan, sir. I hope this gets to you. I'm a fresh 50 year old mechanic and live in Manitoba. I've been watching your videos for a long time now. You are why I look down when I walk our lakes and rivers in old Whiteshell, MB. The rocks I find are amazing in color but I have no idea what I'm looking at. I try and research things but not sure if what I'm researching is what I'm holding? But I love it and even take nice specimens back to the campsite and wet sand all evening until I have made myself a polished rock of no value. but I'm proud of it nonetheless. Lol

Sure wish I knew what I'm looking at when I find cool looking stuff...reds, blues, dark browns almost reddish that you can almost see through when against the sun. Manitoba is an old ocean bottom, we have some cool stuff around. Sparkles everywhere in some places. You can find a focel anytime at any spot on a particular river just from flipping a piece of slag. It's amazing 😍

Their success is measured in how bad they can make others feel, and it's epic if that person breaks down entirely and quits. Those are the people that need to be stricken from platforms, preferably in some way that prevents them from coming back.
Keep doing what you are doing, Dan. 1.3+Million followers means a few thousand who cause you pain really are as insignificant as they are denying themselves to be. Don't be afraid or apologetic at setting the record straight. Sometimes you have to. Just don't let it become your focus. Keep digging those rocks that make you happy.

People don't understand what it takes to produce and sell a product. I'm retired but I do woodworking as a hobby and sort of a business (I'm not really trying to make a living, just pay for my hobby). A woman commissioned me to build a small but complex book display case. I gave her a quote of $800. She asked me why it was so much. I told her the materials she wanted would cost more than $400 and it would take me 40 or 50 hours from design, milling wood, cutting, assembling, sanding, and finishing. I was making $10 an hour. She paid me and gave me a tip. You have to price to sell, but you also need to cover cost and make something when you're done. I've bought your ocean picture stone and I have no complaint about the price.

When I first saw one of your videos, I couldn't watch it very long. I had my doubts. A couple days later, the video showed up again. I sat and watched the whole video and was hooked. I liked and subscribed and looked forward to every new video and went back and watched previous videos since then.

The hate comes from wannabe TH-camrs who don’t understand the hard work you and Pauly put into building views, editing, travelling to sites and constantly making good content. Those clowns are the ones who fake a ‘tragedy’ or a ‘breakup’ or a crap ‘prank’ just to get a couple more views. Screw those clowns. I lived in the public eye for quite a while , and came across the same thing , there will always be haters , yes it's irritating and yes it wares on you and to this day I still have them even though I've stepped away , there's always going to be haters no matter what , crabs in a crab pot !

I don't quite have 3,000 subscribers, and I already have a hard time juggling comments and requests from people to check out their land, giving advice on what I think their rock is, etc. All the while trying to juggle work/life and making sure I spend adequate time with my wife and children. It's a hard balance, and I hate saying no to people, and I can only imagine what you must got through having well over 1 million subscribers! God bless you, brother!

Hi Dan! Ive been watching you for years. The unfortunate thing about the internet is that it offers a buffer that allows people to say things that they would never say to your face. People are more easily able to contact each other without having the connection that makes you feel a part of something and happy. I think this inherent loneliness is breeding a generation of angry people who are looking in from the outside on people who have true community and love in their lives, with envy.
It's easier said than done to ignore hate. Actually, I think it's human nature to focus more on negative comments than the positive. I appreciate you deciding to address this, rather than just say it's not worth your time. I've learnt so much from you, you're a fantastic teacher and a lot of fun to watch. If people want to see you prospecting in a way that is solely finding places nobody has found, good luck. Even during the gold rush, flocks of people would goto areas where others had success. It would be pretty anticlimactic to just watch someone wandering around in nature hunting for brand new discoveries. That's how my son feels when I drag him around places looking for things with minor success 😂

Dan, I've been a sub of yours since I think around the time that you posted the construction of the blue gem sieve in one of your classes MANY years ago... heck that may have been the video that caused me to subscribe. I think I've watch at leas 95% of your videos and unless something came up I'm sure I watched them to completion.
You create great content, you put your all into these videos from what I've seen, I think you're a stand up guy from the brief glimpse you allow everyone to see, and I wouldn't still be here after all this time if I didn't feel this way. I'm sure your channel wouldn't be where it is now after all this time if people didn't think the same way.
I get it that it's not easy to see these one in a few hundred to one in a thousand or more mean posts/comments, I'm sure if I was in your shoes I would be "ranting" just like you did. With that said I hope this video was cathartic for you :)

One thing I have learned is that I can't make myself feel better by making others feel worse.
I was raised by a father that life hadn't been kind to. I picked up his habits of being critical of others, being cynical and sarcastic and always expecting to be treated poorly. I didn't realize how much it becomes a vicious cycle and hurts people unintentionally, but sometimes deeply. And how much I created the exact situation I was trying to preemptively counter. Somewhere around the time my father died I developed some self awareness that included that everything I found negative about him I had become.
I'm a lot nicer to be around now and try hard to treat people with respect and courtesy. It's actually selfish for me to do that because I end up being treated better.
The best way to eliminate your angst over social media trolls is to get off of social media. I got off of Facebook and Twitter and have so much more time to do productive things. Yes, I am passively on TH-cam, I'm watching you after all.

As an old, rock loving lady, I love your lighthearted, educational videos. Those haters are probably just do-nothing jerks who have to tear down people of good will. Block them. They don't deserve comment space.
I never understood the whole "I can get this cheaper elsewhere" thing people do. Like, ok cool? Get it at elsewhere then.
At my favorite quarry, i can buy rock at 30-40 dollars per 5 gallon bucket. If my guy has to dig it, spall it, sort it and heat treat the stone, it's a few dollars per lb and even more expensive for nice individual pieces. The time and effort alone makes it worth the price, before even factoring in equipment. Luckily i have access to a resource and enjoy high grading.

Personally I have learned so much watching your videos that I got my first claim in the spring in the Trout Creek area. Every trip to the claim I hear your voice in my ear, challenging me to move forward and, above all, enjoy the experience. Gold is great but the experience is PRICELESS. Thanks Dan!

I really value creators like yourself getting to set the record straight, get your feelings out there, and drown out the haters with the truth. Imagine having enough time and energy to get big mad about one guy selling rocks online at a higher price than some full scale commercial operation 40 years ago.
I just wanna say, I realize you say people want "happy and excited" Dan, but personally I always want "genuine" Dan, whether that means happy or annoyed or whatever. Some people simply shrug things off, but some can't, and I'd much rather see honest response than fake happiness. I'm happy you didn't mind making a video about things that were weighing you down and venting. Plus it was informative. Always love your videos!

You've provided a lot of entertainment, enjoyment, and knowledge, so go for it Dan, I have 2 ears for you to yell into to get it out.
I think those saying you're not a prospector should look up the definition. "Someone who SEARCHES for minerals" (Basic), I know words are hard, but it just says SEARCH, NOT search for unknown deposits. Just because those minerals are known to be on a claim, doesn't mean you're not searching for them, they're not just laying on top of the ground, you still have to dig down to SEARCH for and find them.

I'm sorry those hurtful things get to you, and to me it's difficult to see why anyone would say things like that. But look at Bob Ross. He is universally loved but I'm sure even he had haters. I love how real you are, I love that you take the time to read it all even though some of it gets to you. You do a good job, I've never suspected you of fake videos I actually started watching you because I was tired of fake videos and I found a video of you debunking the many large nugget videos. I feel sorry for those people that they can't hear the excitement in your voice when you find something genuinely cool. They are missing out on the best part of the experience you provide to us.
