I had one ovary removed when I was 7 due to a cyst larger than the ovary. When I was 21 my other ovary twisted and died, and I had to have it removed. I’m 31, now. It was very difficult dealing with surgical menopause. It took about 5 years to get over the crippling anxiety I felt. Now I’m feeling much more emotionally consistent, but I wish I could have a child, still. My husband and I have considered adoption, but we’re enjoying being married for now :)

Hi! I know that it has been a while since you commented.
I just turned 34 and looking at having my uterus and both ovaries removed in 3 weeks.
      Due to large re-occurring cysts.
I had a question for you,, being thrown into surgical menopause, were you kept on a consistent hormone after to help with the symptoms?
      Estrogen?
Any help or advice would be awesome. Thank you!

I like the way this doctor speaks. He's clear and easy to understand. There is no judgement either, and I appreciate that. It is refreshing to get the facts in a calm voice.

Thank you HysterSisters for the video.
Found a large ovarian cyst after tests for hernia. Had the CA125 test, came back 47. Although the surgeon didn't think I had cancer, I was sent to UCONN as a precaution because they have a lab and could find out if I had cancer or not. My first visit with the surgeon there, right off he insisted I needed a hysterectomy and BSO pushing the fear of cancer if not now that I would in the future. Also said the ovaries don't do anything after menopause and I don't have any use for the uterus. He's a Professor, Associate Program Director for the Residency Program and has even been a Examination Question Writer for the American Board of OB/Gyn Oncology. As many times I said NO, it didn't make sense I finally gave in. Ruined my life, my sex life and still in pain 11 months after. I feel cheated, lied to and taken advantage of. He never repeated the CA125 that the first surgeon did months before, never did any other test. My cyst was benign. I had no pain, symptoms, or problems of ANY kind (expect the inguinal hernia), had a great sex life, all gone because of a benign cyst. A few weeks after the surgery I had night sweats, EXTREMELY emotional, worse than when I went through menopause which was a breeze for me 10 years ago. I asked him if I went through a second menopause and he said that couldn't happen. He had NO explanation for what I went through that month. Nothing in my body feels right anymore, I have cried every day since.

This sounds so similar to me. I was told to get a hysterectomy straight away, but I refused. Second opinion was a bso . I'm due for surgery in 10 weeks. I'm terrified. I'm currently so happy, loving life no major symptoms just usually perimenopause things, yet feel my life is about to fall apart. My husband just says the doctors know what is best ( I'm in the uk) but I can't help but think in my situation I'm right to my thoughts I asked Dr Bonn 😭🙏. Hope your feeling ok now. Sending hugs x

It's been almost 5 years. I've recently been going to a trauma therapist who diagnosed me with PTSD from what I went through and how I was treated. She also confirmed I went through a medical menopause. No one told me what was happening to me and my body. I was ignored nor offered me the help of HRT. I am using the estrogen tablet inserted 2X week and also use estrogen cream for my outer genitals because they get dry and painful. Emotionally I'm doing a little better although it's still hard. I feel like I'm living in a body that isn't mine. I've also started medication for depression. I'd also like to mention that my DEXA scan plumped (taken 2 years after surgery), I also developed cataracts and had surgery 3 years later (which gave me double vision). My once thick hair is gone, I get heart palpitations when stressed and can get tired easily. I have not had sex since surgery. It's not recovery, it's damage control. Through research I found Iodine is VERY important for a woman's health, had mine tested and was low. My conclusion is that I was given a hysterectomy when all I needed was Iodine. I now supplement and hope others demand they have their Iodine levels checked as well. See: theiodineproject.webs.com, Jorge Flechas on TH-cam and Dr. David Browstein's book on Iodine.

Hi Dr. Bonn! I'm 52. I had a c-section birth w/abdominal binkini cut in 1993. I had my uterus and my cervix removed with abdominal bikini cut due to cervical cancer in 1996. Did not need chemo or radiation. Currently, I'm waiting for my BRCA test results to come back. If I'm positive, what is the best surgery for me to get done for ovaries removed? Thnx! Michele

Why are you getting genetic testing done? Cervical cancer is caused by the HPV virus, it has nothing to do with genetics.

I had everything removed-due to abnormal large size cysts. They did the Davinci robotic procedure. My recovery has been quick and almost pain free (two weeks out). I highly recommend this. But my question is, if I still need to have checks or worry about any kind of abnormal 'growth's in the abdominal area once everything has been removed? Does this guarantee I will not have any further abdominal cysts/tumor's? How will we know if they come back, if not?

Hello Dr Bonn, I'm 50 yrs of age and in perimenopause. I have a 5cm cyst on one ovary and a 3 cm cyst on the other ovary. I have a few fibroids on my uterus and endometriosis. I'm not in any pain except perimenopause symptoms, occasional night sweat, occasional irritable legs. However I've been told I need a laparoscopic bilateral salpingo oophorectomy. However I'm terrified of clinical menopause as I've been told due to my endometriosis I cannot take estrogen supplements after surgery as it will make my endometriosis worse after ablation. My ca125 was 40 but said it was because of my endometriosis and not cancerous. Am I wrong in thinking in the next 2 years my periods will probably stop anyway. If my endometriosis is not causing pain and my only symptom is needing to urinate a bit more than usual perimenopause symptoms, is it necessary to go through a bso and clinical menopause with all the major symptoms what's to come instead of just getting private scans every 6 mths, make sure the cysts are ok and not turned cancerous and go into menopause naturally?. I would so appreciate your advise as I'm in such a panic. Sorry I know your busy 🥺

Check your Iodine levels. Women should NEVER have low Iodine. Research ovarian cyst and Iodine.

@@mjf3570 I cannot thankyou enough for advising me to look into iodine. I never knew the benefits and how important it is 🙏. I'm have ordered some iodine supplements ready to take after I contact my Gp and tell them I need to be tested ASAP. I've spoken to my family and mentioned I don't want a Bso and I would rather once tested, take my iodine supplements, magnesium, vit D, Calcium and omega 3 supplements, then every 6 mths get private scans to make sure there's no cancer forming from the benign cysts on my ovaries. Then in a couple of years when I'm in natural menopause, after a further year of no periods... if I have alot of pain I can then consider surgery. Does this sound a better option that a Bso now when I'm still in perimenopause at 50 with no irritable symptoms that affect my daily life?
Honestly cannot thank you enough for yoir advise. The relief I have from my petrified thoughts of this surgery have lessened dramatically. Now I just have to convince my consultant/surgeon , of my decision 🙏 xxxxx

@@Nicolina1111 I'm no Dr but have read multiple studies showing the need for K2 with calcium. Lots of research on YT too. My wife's oncologist and gynos all say CA125 alone is not determinative, many factors play into it. Cancer often doesn't cause symptoms until later. It's awful and worth avoiding at all costs imho. My wife did watchful waiting and tests which lasted 10 months. Now she needs BSO, she's told, due to breast cancer. My wife's 53 and otherwise perfect health and menopause is around the corner anyway which takes her off Tamoxifen and onto Anastrozole aromatase inhibitor. Good luck on your decision!
