I got the 3DS in June of 2011 as a gift for graduating elementary school and I remember playing basically nothing but Asphalt 3D on it until Mario kart 7 came out later that year. The ambassador program means a lot to me personally because it was the first way I played great games like Metroid fusion and Zelda minish cap but more importantly, introduced me to fire emblem through Sacred Stones. My love of fire emblem would only grow after playing awakening and then discovering the other games (which I thankfully picked up before they were super expensive, with the exception of Path of Radiance which took me a while to fully complete) I’m very happy that the 3DS succeeded mostly because in my eyes, it was the only Nintendo console I really supported in the early-mid 2010s. I had a Wii U but never really used other than for smash bros and wind waker.
I agree, this console did not disappoint and was a step up from the ds and I will defend most of its fantastic library of games such as Mario, Pokémon, and smash 4.
Dude, can you talk about PS3? that thing was such a flop at the beginning and X360 was killing it, yet somehow Sony managed to revive it, and at the end of the generation, PS3 wins the race.
Solid video! Though I am quite amazed that Monster Hunter (specifically 3 Ultimate & 4) weren't mentioned directly in regards to the 3DS turnaround from holiday 2011 onwards. They were huge games that helped sell the 3DS (especially in Japan), plus at that time, the IP was (almost) considered a PlayStation franchise since its most versions (the Freedom Unite games) were on the PSP.
How to save a console? Slash the price, and remake your highest acclaimed game with QOL and a paintjob. From there, support an expanding retro library while you wait for development partners to release high quality exclusives. Who wouldve thought the winning formula boils down to: have an affordable console with good games?
Bought a 3ds first in 2013 for luigi's mansion 2. After that I bought and played maybe 5 more games for the thing before eventually trading it years later (I still regret it). In 2022 I got a fairly decent 2ds for $100 and it's been my Atlus Megaten machine ever since and after more than 2 years I'm still playing the thing a couple times a week. Atlus released some truly magnificent games on that system.
I was working at GAME when the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP launched and remember us all laughing at the DS compared to the PSP and that it didn’t stand a chance. Turns out, a handheld console that had innovative games aimed at an audience who wanted them, compared to a handheld version of an existing console that added nothing was the way to go.
Nice video (I liked what you talked about 3DS today) I would say 3DS has a shaky start , but eventually gained good rep . Not to mention , it also help support Nintendo when in Wii U era(remind me of how Gameboy advance/Nintendo DS help support them in Gamecube/Wii years).
Love your usage of different Nintendo music, while watching the video I was playing Fates and listening at Dusk Falls outta nowhere caught me off guard The 3DS is truly an amazing gaming system, specially nowadays with community support and those amazing ports of PC games (Fallout, Half Life, GTA III, etc) and the return of online for certain games
Honestly, the 3DS's slow beginning is kind of overblown online. I think it stems from Nintendo panicking and dropping the price drastically in response to how badly it sold during the middle of 2011, but its launch and the entirety of its life up to and even sometimes after the Switch's release didn't share this problem. It was just something about that particular period that made people uninterested (weak lineup).
Kid Icarus uprising is one of my favorite games ever. I don't know why it didn't become a big core franchise for Nintendo when the game felt like it could've been the start of multiple new Ki games. Oh well I guess Ki will be relegated to just Smash cameos for the future...
The problem was that Kid Icarus Uprising was a vanity project due to Sakurai being the first one outside of Nintendo to know about the 3ds. At the end of the day, history of the Kid Icarus series proves that Gunpei Yokoi's opposition to the development of Super Metroid was justified as the series wasn't supposed to return after its initial three game run.
Id like to correct your statement "the 3ds was sold at a loss", it wasn't, it was actually marked up significantly, an additional $147 actually. There are several articles stating that the cost of components added up $103. This is why Nintendo was comfortable slashing the initial price, when they had to. This is also why the wii u and the switch never received price cuts themselves, as the cost of the wii u wasn't so much the console itself, but the gamepad was costly to produce. The Wii U wasn't sold as a loss, but it wasn't profitable either until someone purchased a game with it. The switch is similar, with the price of each component rounding up to $290 after manufacturing. Nintendo has never historically sold a console at a loss, one of the only console developers who do so.
Was gonna post this as well. Nintendo is infamous for this, which is why they've never really been in real financial jeopardy even during the WiiU lean years.
I’m pretty sure some 3D movies did end up releasing in the Japanese eShop. The one that I remember specifically is Wreck it Ralph (Sugar Rush in Japan) but there were probably more.
What I didn't liked the system: i had a ps vita and a 2DS. For vita literally every game what i wanted to be localized from Japan was released in English. For 3DS even dragon quest 11, great ace attorney and monster hunter XX didn't got English version. Ok later all of them released for switch. But it was kinda weird because 3DS sold better than ps vita especially in west. IDK in west 3DS why didn't have market for more serious games.
Great video dude ! Just gotta point out that nintendo dont like the loss leading strategy, so that point its true for others companies maybe not for nintendo
amazing video!! If I watched this blind I would’ve assumed it would have at least 10K+ views! Can we get a How NOT to Save a Console on the PlayStation Vita? I’d love to see a deep dive into how Sony screwed that system over!
Thanks for watching!! PS Vita will definitely get an episode. I love the Vita. Such a great system, so ahead of its time. Deserved such better support from Sony. Vita means Life 🥲
I think one of the main reasons for the initial flop was just confussion. I was 13 at the time, and remember arguing with my friends whether it was a new console or just a 3D version of the one we already had. And our parents also had that confusion so they all said "you already have one DS". I think the name "DS2, now with 3D!" would have been much more clear!
I think between this and the wiiu nintendo finally gets that whatever they do Don't launch a system with no games also I'm hoping the switch successor they don't overprice it either. I am hoping for a 349$ price tag.
What if, AI and AV1 encoding-decoding-transcoding made a youtube baby with google 3ds flip-fold pixel pros? 3d screwy youtube unless content creators export a 3d version in premiere pro? You may need a special screen for it too.
Rest in Peace, S. Iwata.
He really was the best. I enjoyed learning about his life and his skill as a programmer.
The goat of game freak, single handedly saved gen 2 @@Dank_Engine
those 3DS models being tethered to literal models at E3 is wild. the industry was outta pocket. great video fam
Right?? When I edited that part, I just imagined how awkward that must’ve been for the media people trying to play the system LMAO

There actually is a 3D movie on the 3DS. If you have Tekken 3DS you can watch the animated 1.5 h long movie in 3D on the handheld.
*party blower sounds*

Here, here.
Its simple answer, many game devs was mastered cell architecture at the end ps3 life

I got a 3ds just for monster hunter! Lol

Yeah, its not like if Playstation didn't learned that

def need a Wii U how NOT to save a console episode
No major Nintendo IP at launch and significantly more expensive than the DS at launch. It should have been no surprise it got off to a slow start
would love one on the Wii u, game cube and Sega's dreamcast
Starfox 3D has got to be one of the best looking 3DS games. Its just so nicely presented.
18:18 I don't know why the delivery of this line made me laugh so hard

Needs weird phone resolution HDR too. And dolby.
Oh my god, I forgot about the parade of women strapped to a 3DS. That was so weird. 😂
3ds was more successful than xbox 1
