I always enjoy watching Davie tie and listening to the lilt of his dialect. But what I especially liked about this video was the advice to "Have fun." It's easy to think of fly tying as labor and the fishing as fun, but as Davie makes clear, it can be a lot of fun tying too. Beautiful rendition of the Hare's Ear, Mr. McPhail. Thank you.
A wee fly to start off the fishing season in March 👍, u must be one of the greatest fly dressers of all time. I bought a vice when I was 15 years old and never really got into it. Football took over but I always had and will have a love for fly fishing. I regret not sticking at the fly tying!
This is one nymph everyone should have three or four in a couple of different sizes. One of the best flies that needs to be in your fly box. No doubt! The wire makes them sink nicely and the glint of the copper is perfect!
hate to be a pain but after researching the family tree I find my family to be the Laird's of Invernahyle. Do you know of any flies from this area. Not sure wheather they were fishing rivers or lochs. I know you are a fly historian and I love fishing the old flies. Especially the NC spiders. Funny that during the hatch the dry fly fishermen ask me what I'm using. They cant believe silk and a little hackle fools the Browns.
Your dubbing technique is splendid. I've never looked back after adopting it from you many years ago. So in control with the amount, especially with the natural materials. Thank you very much, again :)
Great tie, as usual Davie. Making an old classic a bit more modern without overdoing it. Love your video. They help the experienced as well as the rookie tie better flies.
This is my primary may fly nymph. Varied colors to match the naturals. Thank you. 144 of these should be enough. Excellent as usual. You really are smooth and fluid in your tie.
I got a whole fly box that has nothing but Hare's Ear Nymph's in it. Of late I have gotten really lazy, I been tying and fishing an NZ variation called the Hare and Copper. It works really well here in CT. I tie them all in sizes # 14 down to a #20 size # 18 seem to work the best. The more they get chewed on the better they get, so I tie them a bit more shaggy. Natural and dyed Olive, same for my PT's petty much my most used nymphs. One of my favorite times of the year is going into fall, low water, and # 18 or # 20 on 6x or 7 x tippet, NZ strike indicator (white ) and sized to what a # 16 dry fly would be. Not uncommon for me to pick up 18 to 30 fish in an afternoon.
Nice one Davie nice one and you as always you make it look so easy in a way to encourage fellow fly tiers, all the best you and family and stay safe Peter.
A perfect and realistic pattern. I will try to do it in the best possible way.Than you Master. it’sa pleasure to learn something every day with you.👏👏👍
Nice done Davie. I do like the look of the partridge variant. It looked a cracker. Oh by the way I finally managed to source a JC cape. It came in the post this morning.🎉 Thanks for the tips🎣

Hi Anablak P, I'm sorry the spool I have of this wire has no size on it but if you compare it to the UTC wire it is the same as the extra small.... All the very best Davie..
Hi Davie - is it just me missing the waxed finger ? Or have you changed something :) Top draw fly again Davie & liked the fulling Mill interview session well done. Would there be any chance sometime you could have a youtube on just hackles - selecting what to look for etc etc Cheers Steve

@@DavieMcPhail Thank you for your expertise, beautiful flies, and well produced videos!
Very nice. What size copper wire? You said "fine small" at 0:59 which is two sizes, and then at 1:08 UTC small & extra small???
Hi Anablak P,
I'm sorry the spool I have of this wire has no size on it but if you compare it to the UTC wire it is the same as the extra small....

Lindas lindas show Maravilha Mestre gênio parabéns um abraço
Guess you should call this one the "hare's tail" or the Pheasant Ear", as this incorporates the best attributes of the HE and the PT.
Hi Davie would Adding a tungsten bead or lead wraps at the thorax make the fly swim in an unnatural way, putting off the fish?
👍👏👏 Davie
See, thats where you're wrong davie, when i tie a fly, the fish become picky mathematicians
Ian McKenzie yours look that good? Mine are what Gnashers left after a decent poo!
hello master, as a question could you use garden twine as a pillar when tying paraduns.Thank you again
Hi Hywel,
I've never used garden twine for tying with but I could see it working, let me know how you get on..
All the very best Davie
