You are correct, but if you think the government had a choice you are not correct. Before Thatcher the country had been subjected to power cuts and soaring oil prices. This lead to the government begging the IMF for a loan. Yes Great Britain was bailed out by the IMF. Add to that the cost of the Falklands war and the rising burden of the welfare state Britain needed some breathing space. Selling off the utilities was one of few options available. Had the people who brought the shares held them instead of selling them for a small profit right away they would be reaping the dividends still. Sure the city fat cats took a big chunk of them, but those fat cats were bankrolling the government so they had a lot of power. That was not caused by Thatcher, and she nor any government since had the power to change it. What she did was to buy the nation time to allow the revenues from North Sea Oil rise to plug some of the gaps.
@@t3hmaniac You are right but the difference is that the people who bought those utilities owned the nations debt. To use your example you have a huge balance on your credit card. The minimum payment is more than you make at your job. If you sell the car you can pay it off. Now you can afford to save up for a new car. Britain had to borrow money from the IMF and fought a war in the Falklands. Once you get into debt to the IMF they run your nation into the ground. Britain was lucky to get out. Britain was becoming self sufficient in Oil from the north sea. That was the revenue that allowed the government to operate the economy.

The "poll tax," officially known as the Community Charge, was a flat-rate tax introduced by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s government in 1990 as part of her local government reforms in the U.K. The tax was controversial and deeply unpopular, ultimately contributing to Thatcher’s downfall as Prime Minister. Here’s a closer look at what it was and why it became so contentious: What Was the Poll Tax? The poll tax replaced the rates system, which had been in place for funding local government services. Under the rates system, taxes were based on the value of a property-essentially, homeowners and landlords paid taxes based on their property’s value to fund local services. The Community Charge, however, was a flat tax that required every adult (aged 18 and over) to pay the same amount, regardless of income or property value. The idea was that everyone would contribute equally to local government funding, which was meant to be a more "fair" system of local taxation. Reasons for Introducing the Poll Tax Thatcher’s government argued that the rates system was outdated and unfair, as it placed a disproportionate burden on property owners and varied based on property values. The poll tax was intended to: Make Local Councils Accountable: By making everyone pay, the government hoped people would scrutinize local government spending more carefully, as every adult would have a stake. Spread the Tax Burden: The poll tax aimed to distribute the cost of local services across more people, not just homeowners, thereby supposedly lightening the load on individual households. Why Was the Poll Tax So Controversial? Regressive Nature: Since it was a flat tax, everyone paid the same amount, regardless of their ability to pay. This meant that low-income individuals faced the same tax as wealthy individuals, which hit poorer people much harder as a percentage of their income. Unfairness Perception: Many saw the tax as fundamentally unjust, as it ignored differences in people’s wealth, property values, and ability to pay. Critics argued it shifted the tax burden from wealthier homeowners to renters and low-income individuals. Difficult to Enforce: The tax was difficult to collect and enforce, as many people, particularly in lower-income groups, simply couldn’t afford to pay. In some areas, this led to mass non-compliance and resistance. Mass Protests and Civil Unrest: The poll tax led to widespread protests across the U.K., culminating in the Poll Tax Riots in March 1990, particularly a major riot in London’s Trafalgar Square. The protests reflected the deep anger among citizens over the perceived unfairness of the tax. Consequences of the Poll Tax The poll tax became a major factor in the decline of Thatcher’s popularity and political power. Facing intense backlash from the public and her own party, Thatcher resigned in November 1990. The poll tax was eventually replaced in 1993 by the Council Tax, which took into account property values, but was less severe than the original rates system.
I don't know if it was the same in Great Britain, but in the states, the people awarding the bailouts sat on the committees of the same banks they were bailing out. That shit was crazy!

However, as the west started to clearly win the cold war, western elites could abandon the common people and go back to just enriching themselves, with the USSR collapsing into a shithole and both the post Soviet states & China abandoning socialism/communism/whatever leftist economics, there was no strong example of a competing economic system to compare against, so there was no need to actually make capitalism look good. The Feudal mindset remained. Which is why they accepted Attlee's reforms through gritted teeth. Why it was only the fear of Communist insurrection that held them in check. Why by the early 1970's they were sick of it all. Sick of having to sharing the same table as the lower orders. Which is what Thatcher represented. An English Middle Class that wanted to go back to how it was. That wanted to crush the power of the organised working classes. Which is what they got. But only at the cost of this country's future.
Also, there was the whole "there's no zealot like a convert" sort of mentality: she was firmly middle class, but spent her years at uni surrounded by the sorts of six-fingered, cosanguinated toffs from the upper classes, and wanted to prove she could run with them, and be even more hardline conservative.
I'm not a UK nor US citizen, but despised her and Reagan 20 years ago already when I latched onto what these neoliberalists were up to since the 1980s. The parallels between timing and market crashes in these countries are unsurprising, only for neoliberalism to be exported across the world, enforced by military action, coups, and corporate/government collusion and greed. The latest neoliberalist crisis in the UK is the Thames Water, a utility handed to the private sector with a few billion pounds too. And now the LP is clueless (only because it may harm neoliberalist donors) about how to fix this mess - toying with the idea of assuming temporary control until Thames Water can get its head above the expensive, unhealthy water, and then hand it back to these asset-stripping, price-increasing, self-rewarding, debt-creating vultures. Oh,... and I equally despise Friedman's permanent arrogant grin.
Great video, although voluntarily agreeing to look at Thatcher for +3o minutes isn't an easy undertaking. Unfortunately, I suspect the removal of her portrait from no#10 was performative - Starmer is very much a Thatcherite, and many of those "advising" him are from the New Labour cabal. More of an update of the guard rather than a change of it.
I'll tell you why, because the industries weren't making shareholders enough money and in a neoliberalism 1 shareholder profit > 1000 people in work Selling off, closing and just importing was far cheaper and made a few board members more money, which looks good on the GDP, so fuck the poor, money to be made 💰💰💰🤑🤑🤑
At least the U.K. has the sense to despise Thatcher in retrospect, here in the U.S. Reagan is still held up as some kind of demigod. Imagine being eighteen when Reagan was running for his second term, and trying to convince anyone that Reagan was doing real damage to the country, it was quite a depressing entrance into our "democracy".
You forget the key component of Thatcher being able to keep inflation low, and that was increasing and maintaining an overvalued £. This killed British exports, which British manufacturing relied on to survive, and why so many manufacturing companies went from being in the black to buried overnight. She was a less competent Liz Truss. A correctly valued £ would have seen manufacturing survive at the cost of higher inflation than under the previous Labour government, which would have exposed her incompetence. Instead she blamed these firms for their failure. Even now manufacturing accounts for half of exports from only 9% of the workforce. Britian would have been in a far stronger position with Callaghan in charge instead of her

I had hoped we'd see some positive changes at the lower end of the UK totem pole, especially the most vulnerable such as the disabled and unemployed, but instead we've gotten more rhetoric of how the unemployed and disabled are burdens and not valued when compared to working people. More point the finger at the poorest saying "it's their fault" while they make money for themselves and their friends right infront of us
Maggie Thatcher got lucky twice. Falklands war was one, North Sea oil was the other, and where did that money go on? It got squandered, and went to the rich.

Good video. But , you mentioned Frederik Hayek and his economic ideas, but Hayek was only the Godfather of those ideas. And Hayek had said that he was sympathetic to the Nazis. They actually came to fruition by Milton Freidman and his CHICAGO SCHOOL of economics. Chile was the first country where it was put into practice with help from the USA and Britain to overthrow the elected left wing ( NOT COMMUNIST )Government. The Falklands War saved her and gave her even more power to do what she wanted.
@@conorkelly947 I would argue the things that she did whilst in office could have been done with a kinder and more gentle hand. Instead of mass declining the north and Welsh mining towns, she could have pursued a programme of economic redevelopment. The northerners and Welsh would have been grateful for better and less dangerous work, but instead, She shut the coal mines and left nothing in their place. She could have let people buy their homes, at market value and used the money to purchase and construct new homes for social housing. She seems to have forgotten that businesses rely upon customers in the consumer economy, and that if the average consumer cannot afford everyday products, the businesses will be less profitable. She favoured business at the expense of business and the consumer. She also pursued her goals, often for no practical purpose and for purely ideological reasons, not because it was effective. She cast off the old Tory values of noblesse oblige and responsibility to society established by Disraeli, in favour of a philosophy of let them eat cake.

As someone’s who lived through the economic crash of 2008, Brex-‘Shit’ and (of course) the pandemic. I didn’t know much about Thatcher until I started listening to punk rock, especially the 80s bands that were calling out her corrupted BS policy that left so many into poverty. Now when I come to think of it, there’s no wonder why we’re feeling the effects of Thatcherism to this day, as we all look back at her own grave in sheer dispair…
I know it's random but your comment reminded me of a SNL sketch about a legendary fictional British punk musician who was in love with Margaret Thatcher. One of his songs was "Hey, Maggie Thatcher you're alright. Thanks to you I sleep at night" which was the ultimate blow to the career of his band 😂
When I was in high school, Laissez-faire Crapitalism was described to us as _"Well, yes, of course it was bad... but look at how good it was, we needed it or we'd never have gotten those giant corporations that inspired laws against monopolies because of all the damage they did. Those bad things were good."_
It's good we loosened up the laws on who can own a tank, otherwise the March Tank Massacre wouldn't have happened and we wouldn't know to not allow tanks in children's hospitals!
Good stiff as usual however the economy was basically fucked at the time Thatcher was elected, mainly as you say because of the lingering effects of the oil crisis a few years earlier. The mood in the country was definitely that we needed to try something 'new' no matter how misguided that turned out to be.

Her main flaw was not understanding the greed in others. Given where we are, what is required is Regulation of industries and if companies fail to meet them proportional penalties.
according to ipsos: On average during Mrs Thatcher’s premiership, 40% of the public were satisfied with the way she was doing her job while 54% were dissatisfied. But at the peak of her popularity (in June 1982, after the recapture of the Falklands), 59% were satisfied with her performance, while her rating fell as low as 20% satisfied (in March 1990, the month in which there were riots in London against the introduction of the “poll tax”). Average satisfaction with the way her government was running the country was 32%, compared to an average 59% who were dissatisfied. The low points were 16% satisfied in March 1981 and again in March 1990.
One aspect of neo-liberalism that I seldom see examined is the fact that wherever government services withdraw, private corporations take over. You go from a service owned by the people with a priority of serving the people to a service owned by one of more individuals with a priority of further enriching those individuals. For all the pompous dismissal of socialists "spending other people's money" it turned out that neo-liberalism cost those other people a whole lot more.
I live in regional Australia, and what this basically means is that companies prioritise service in an area about twenty kilometres from a capital city centre and then forget everywhere else. Oh, the Free Market says its inefficient to put services out there - now, you wouldn't want to be goin' against the Free Market, would you, eh?

Selling off gas, oil, water was the equivalent of taking the family silver to cash converters.
Worse, its selling off the car you use to drive to work and then hiring the taxi company you sold it to for your commute every day.

Here’s a closer look at what it was and why it became so contentious:
What Was the Poll Tax?
The poll tax replaced the rates system, which had been in place for funding local government services. Under the rates system, taxes were based on the value of a property-essentially, homeowners and landlords paid taxes based on their property’s value to fund local services.
The Community Charge, however, was a flat tax that required every adult (aged 18 and over) to pay the same amount, regardless of income or property value. The idea was that everyone would contribute equally to local government funding, which was meant to be a more "fair" system of local taxation.
Reasons for Introducing the Poll Tax
Thatcher’s government argued that the rates system was outdated and unfair, as it placed a disproportionate burden on property owners and varied based on property values. The poll tax was intended to:
Make Local Councils Accountable: By making everyone pay, the government hoped people would scrutinize local government spending more carefully, as every adult would have a stake.
Consequences of the Poll Tax
The poll tax became a major factor in the decline of Thatcher’s popularity and political power. Facing intense backlash from the public and her own party, Thatcher resigned in November 1990. The poll tax was eventually replaced in 1993 by the Council Tax, which took into account property values, but was less severe than the original rates system.

Hell hath no fury like frustrated entitlement. Which is what she represented. The frustrated entitlements of the English Middle and Upper Classes. It is vital to remember that these people never got a humility check during the 1940's. Not like their brethren on the continent. They still believed they were 'better' than the lower orders.

She also pursued her goals, often for no practical purpose and for purely ideological reasons, not because it was effective. She cast off the old Tory values of noblesse oblige and responsibility to society established by Disraeli, in favour of a philosophy of let them eat cake.
Really impressed with your content, mate.
Well researched, funny presentation, engaging edit.
Big love
Thatcher, a perfect example of having "the luck of the devil", because she was a devil in human form, with Tony Blair being the son of the devil, and Starmer's the grandson of the devil.
But isn't Starmer from the good ones?!
@@white-dragon4424 your stuck in dungeons and dragons thinking they were well educated and made a big difference, if your so much better, try achieving more then them. Simple.
@user-qy2wf2lt6v 😂😂😂 we hoped so , unfortunately he is here to reign hell upon us all , he is the shape-shifting devil, before the election his face was a little rounder and features a little less severe , he is PM his face has changed , it's become sharper more severe with eyes as black as coal , every so often when he speaks about the British working class his third eye lids blink and he let's out a guttural growl , that shows his sharpened teeth.
Think Johnson, Cameron, Truss, Sunak and co were pretty demonic too !
Who are you then?
RE Railways Thatcher actually didn't want to privatize BR she thought it was a natural monopoly just shows how her ideology took on a life of itself
and then john major went on and actually privatised national rail 🤣
As someone’s who lived through the economic crash of 2008, Brex-‘Shit’ and (of course) the pandemic. I didn’t know much about Thatcher until I started listening to punk rock, especially the 80s bands that were calling out her corrupted BS policy that left so many into poverty. Now when I come to think of it, there’s no wonder why we’re feeling the effects of Thatcherism to this day, as we all look back at her own grave in sheer dispair…
Brexshit 💀
I know it's random but your comment reminded me of a SNL sketch about a legendary fictional British punk musician who was in love with Margaret Thatcher. One of his songs was "Hey, Maggie Thatcher you're alright. Thanks to you I sleep at night" which was the ultimate blow to the career of his band 😂
@@AamuAurora Haha, do you remember which show this was from? I’ve got the feeling it’s the Young Ones but I could be dead wrong 😆
That bloody thatcher ruined my life.
Cost me a fortune to have that roof redone....
That's why I hired an Argentine roofer to replace mine with ceramic tiles instead, much cheaper in the long run
Aren't they rich enough? I don't get why they have to squeeze the poor so hard. It's just illogical
When I was in high school, Laissez-faire Crapitalism was described to us as _"Well, yes, of course it was bad... but look at how good it was, we needed it or we'd never have gotten those giant corporations that inspired laws against monopolies because of all the damage they did. Those bad things were good."_
It's good we loosened up the laws on who can own a tank, otherwise the March Tank Massacre wouldn't have happened and we wouldn't know to not allow tanks in children's hospitals!
she might not be the reason it rains all the time.. but if she had the power, she would have made it rain more!
What I'd like us to coin in the future is "The Post Tory Consensus" 🤞
It already started....
And a worthless coin too.
Good stiff as usual however the economy was basically fucked at the time Thatcher was elected, mainly as you say because of the lingering effects of the oil crisis a few years earlier. The mood in the country was definitely that we needed to try something 'new' no matter how misguided that turned out to be.
Stuff not 'stiff' obviously. Sodding fat fingers.
The video leaves out the bullshit that was happening in the 1970s - you had the actual revolutionary communists in the loony left, PIE, losing your job because the union revoked your membership (the closed shop being law) if you dared not vote in favour of striking, shitty cars built by lazy Brummies which were protected by high tariffs, endless strikes, bent Labour councillors giving the best council houses to their mates, three day week, everyone going on strike, demarcation disputes, urban motorway construction, dumping garbage next to the Thames at Rainham, drug use, banning selective education (meaning your school will be shite if you're poor) Gary Glitter, Jimmy Saville, and Terry Wogan.
Great videos man. Really informative and funny too
I grew up in Sheffield in the nineteen seventies and life was grim for the working class families .. I left Britian in the late nineties and moved to Scandinavia .
The long-term ripple effects of the pole tax mass unemployment and lastly crime, left a bitter twhatste in my mouth.
A very concise and informative video ..
Thank you🙏🏻
Her main flaw was not understanding the greed in others.
Given where we are, what is required is Regulation of industries and if companies fail to meet them proportional penalties.
Agreed.
This why I will never trust libertarians and conservatives when it comes to fiscal and economic policies
Oh be quiet
Finally, you put out a video on neoliberalism. Well done, brother!
Amazing job man as usual. It's so refreshing to see and listen to. Thank you and keep up the great work!
I've been waiting for this video for so long!! Jimmy never fails to deliver. Keep it up man. Great work as always.
The episode of Have I Got News For You which aired after her passing hosted by Brian Blessed will live in infamy.
She did win three elections. Whatever valid criticisms to be made of Thatcherism it clearly had substantial public support.
The working class loved her
according to ipsos:
On average during Mrs Thatcher’s premiership, 40% of the public were satisfied with the way she was doing her job while 54% were dissatisfied.
All you are doing here is making a valid case against democracy.
The question has to be asked why Labour presented no credible alternative. Rightly or wrongly many ordinary people backed her.
@@peterllwlln they were reading newspapers backing tory propoganda they had no way of knowing how bad others had it.
@@hoilst265 - In fact it was Rudd's idea of creating a fibre network that induced me to considering giving a vote to Labor.
I don't care what party does it, but whoever provides the best service, the best care to the average Aussie is who gets my vote. I don't care which party does it.
@@RictusHolloweye
Exactly, and it pleases me to see two other Australians that realize this:
The most important thing is how much WE are getting back from our Government.
Countries that have high spending on their citizenry just... do better... then those that don't!
It makes sense too, for healthy and educated citizens are more productive then broken serfs.
As an Irish person, I'd say I hate almost any British establishment figurehead. But Thatchers death was pretty well celebrated by almost everyone. If i remember right, our national news decried people singing ding dong the witch is dead in Dublin.
Your work is amazing! Keep going🙏
Thatcher probably stole Satan's throne in Hell by now, 2000AD the magazine shown her in a comic strip ruling over Hell afte dethroning Satan more evil than Satan himself.
I was in college when she died, I remember my politics teacher and history teacher dancing in the corridor
Had a carpet salesman who was measuring my house last week randomly start lovingly talking about Thatcher. It was totally bizarre. Boomers obsession with her is quite something

@@samw363 Well my working class father was able to buy his own home in the 80s.
@count69 as was mine, what's your point ? My point was every working class human in this country would've done better. Thatcher promoted individualism, "im doing great so fuck the lesser" the same point I think you're trying to make now.....as if to prove the point of all of thatchers critics. So thank you, for being a living example of my point, appreciated.
Fair play to you Jimmy for mentioning Keith Joseph, spot on. Mighty glad we had Spitting Image as a critique at the time. Thatcher and her Cabinet in a restaurant about to order. Waiter to Thatcher - "How would Sir like his steak?" Thatcher - "Rare". Waiter - "and the vegetables?" Thatcher - "They'll have the same". There was a reason the likes of Norman Tebbit was portrayed as her thug protector, they formed a faction in the Tory party that was up against the 'Grandee' tory.
