My tax professor thought estate taxes were moral even though the constitution says direct taxes must be apportioned amongst the states, and they never taught really that a lot of assets goes up simply cause the quantity of currency in existence continues to expand a lot keeping the inequality or bubbles in existence. They may mention it briefly but never to question if it’s moral or ethical or they’ll say it’s needed to maintain jobs but won’t admit it’s the largest reason for wealth inequality. If Obama would have let interest rates normalize or stay higher rather than taking them to zero for instance yes jobs would have been lost but the ultra rich would have lost a tremendous amount of money bringing wealth inequality down. He said he wants moats and protectionism for his businesses which is exactly what government agencies do is help protect his business. You are correct, but if you think the government had a choice you are not correct. Before Thatcher the country had been subjected to power cuts and soaring oil prices. This lead to the government begging the IMF for a loan. Yes Great Britain was bailed out by the IMF. Add to that the cost of the Falklands war and the rising burden of the welfare state Britain needed some breathing space. Selling off the utilities was one of few options available. Had the people who brought the shares held them instead of selling them for a small profit right away they would be reaping the dividends still. Sure the city fat cats took a big chunk of them, but those fat cats were bankrolling the government so they had a lot of power. That was not caused by Thatcher, and she nor any government since had the power to change it. What she did was to buy the nation time to allow the revenues from North Sea Oil rise to plug some of the gaps.

The minimum payment is more than you make at your job. If you sell the car you can pay it off. Now you can afford to save up for a new car. Britain had to borrow money from the IMF and fought a war in the Falklands. Once you get into debt to the IMF they run your nation into the ground. Britain was lucky to get out. Britain was becoming self sufficient in Oil from the north sea. That was the revenue that allowed the government to operate the economy.

Attending Oxford costs the same as any other University, and was free back when Thatcher was a student. Getting in to Oxford involves passing competitive exams that are open to anyone. While intelligence is a privilege, it is perhaps one we should encourage in our leaders.

In any case, if you need to pass an exam or an interview and you attend a private or grammar school, somebody will coach you on how to get in. My dad was a coal miner but he even saw the writing on the wall when we started importing Chinese brown coal. I'd have loved to have worked in the coal mining industry in the UK but it was always going to be destroyed now we're seeing the green push remove coal as power generation completely and even steel becoming electric over gas.

I'm not British, but my Mancunian told me how he was affected by Thacher closing the mines. His father was unemployed, and then he finally found work, but he had to travel constantly. He was almost never home, and his parents got a divorce. Of course, money was tight, so there were times his family went hungry. Overall, my other British friends celebrated when she died. From what I saw in this video, she wasn't a good leader and only looked out for rich people.

I'm an old bloke who lived through her horrendous reign but never let it be forgotten that the Labour Party was to blame for her government's electoral success. Far more interested in conducting their own civil war than constituting a coherent and credible alternative government.
The problem during that era in history is that there was no love for social idea's. It was just an opposition to communism, which came to provide a lot of peoples idea of politics. The over-arching fight against communism, came to leave us in the hands of corporate, money chasing business. Which is fine, but if you allow corporations to take money out of the economy, you have to rely on them to put it back. But it just does not happen. And unfortunately never will.

My dad, who lived in socialist Yugoslavia, then briefly in the 80s moved to the UK to illegally work while on a tourist visa hoping to eventually get a real job and legit visa, didn’t like it and went back to Yugoslavia, and had also travelled throughout the Eastern bloc and later the western world has an interesting conclusion on the postwar consensus (though I’m sure other folks have come to the same conclusion long before him): when the West had a viable rival economic system to compete with, it had to create good living standards and actually care for its people, to show “capitalism” was doing well, hence why it constructed a golden age of capitalism narrative. However, as the west started to clearly win the cold war, western elites could abandon the common people and go back to just enriching themselves, with the USSR collapsing into a shithole and both the post Soviet states & China abandoning socialism/communism/whatever leftist economics, there was no strong example of a competing economic system to compare against, so there was no need to actually make capitalism look good. Everyone was capitalist so the idea that this is normal, or at least as good as you’re gonna get, was easier to push.

I will note that Fascism didn't rise in Germany or Italy via revolution - they were welcomed into power by the establishment. Why? Because Socialism and Communism were too popular with the common people for the rich to bare.
Actually the budget was actually pretty decent. Its not perfect but its looking to investment and it is taxing things like capital gains, inheritence, second homes. Hopedully it will go towards rebalancing the economy and he is taking about re nationalising rail over time. The OBR forecast is to have a surplus by 2027-28 which we havent in a longtime.

Hell hath no fury like frustrated entitlement. Which is what she represented. The frustrated entitlements of the English Middle and Upper Classes. It is vital to remember that these people never got a humility check during the 1940's. Not like their brethren on the continent. They still believed they were 'better' than the lower orders. The Feudal mindset remained. Which is why they accepted Attlee's reforms through gritted teeth. Why it was only the fear of Communist insurrection that held them in check. Why by the early 1970's they were sick of it all. Sick of having to sharing the same table as the lower orders. Which is what Thatcher represented. An English Middle Class that wanted to go back to how it was. That wanted to crush the power of the organised working classes. Which is what they got. But only at the cost of this country's future.

I'm not a UK nor US citizen, but despised her and Reagan 20 years ago already when I latched onto what these neoliberalists were up to since the 1980s. The parallels between timing and market crashes in these countries are unsurprising, only for neoliberalism to be exported across the world, enforced by military action, coups, and corporate/government collusion and greed. The latest neoliberalist crisis in the UK is the Thames Water, a utility handed to the private sector with a few billion pounds too. You forget the key component of Thatcher being able to keep inflation low, and that was increasing and maintaining an overvalued £. This killed British exports, which British manufacturing relied on to survive, and why so many manufacturing companies went from being in the black to buried overnight. She was a less competent Liz Truss. A correctly valued £ would have seen manufacturing survive at the cost of higher inflation than under the previous Labour government, which would have exposed her incompetence. Instead she blamed these firms for their failure. Even now manufacturing accounts for half of exports from only 9% of the workforce. Instead of mass declining the north and Welsh mining towns, she could have pursued a programme of economic redevelopment. The northerners and Welsh would have been grateful for better and less dangerous work, but instead, She shut the coal mines and left nothing in their place. She could have let people buy their homes, at market value and used the money to purchase and construct new homes for social housing. She seems to have forgotten that businesses rely upon customers in the consumer economy, and that if the average consumer cannot afford everyday products, the businesses will be less profitable. She favoured business at the expense of business and the consumer. She also pursued her goals, often for no practical purpose and for purely ideological reasons, not because it was effective. She cast off the old Tory values of noblesse oblige and responsibility to society established by Disraeli, in favour of a philosophy of let them eat cake.

Good stiff as usual however the economy was basically fucked at the time Thatcher was elected, mainly as you say because of the lingering effects of the oil crisis a few years earlier. I live in regional Australia, and what this basically means is that companies prioritise service in an area about twenty kilometres from a capital city centre and then forget everywhere else. The academic left even in college believes in Keynesian economics and until you actually think about the cost of money and the institutionalized theft that happens when you create new currency out of thin air you’ll be indoctrinated thinking it’s moral because you simply just regurgitate what your professors teach you. Colleges don’t teach you to have healthy skepticism and question things in your mind. My tax professor thought estate taxes were moral even though the constitution says direct taxes must be apportioned amongst the states, and they never taught really that a lot of assets goes up simply cause the quantity of currency in existence continues to expand a lot keeping the inequality or bubbles in existence. They may mention it briefly but never to question if it’s moral or ethical or they’ll say it’s needed to maintain jobs but won’t admit it’s the largest reason for wealth inequality. If Obama would have let interest rates normalize or stay higher rather than taking them to zero for instance yes jobs would have been lost but the ultra rich would have lost a tremendous amount of money bringing wealth inequality down. There’s a reason Warren buffet supports democrats and still is filthy rich. He said he wants moats and protectionism for his businesses which is exactly what government agencies do is help protect his business. I’m not saying we shouldn’t have agencies and regulations but you must always discuss how that the government actually helps big corporations and make the left richer, too. It’s not just the right. Democrats used to be the party of the people but look at how many monopolies owned by democrat billionaires that exist. Democrats of the past were against massive monopolies and oligarchs and today seem to be the same party of the right but they differ on some issues to virtue signal. Amazon or bezos lawsuit in Georgia showed how DEI is used to increase diversity at warehouses because studies show the greater there’s diversity the less likely there are going to be unions! They’re using the woke movement to make more money essentially. Personally I’m not a fan of unions as I’ve read history and how unions abuse members or ran by the mob etc. but Amazon or bezos is horrible for virtue signaling when they’re really using the movement to help them.
Also if you care about wealth inequality think about this issue. If you have idk 300 million people or whatever in the U.S. and you bring in 30 million illegal immigrants over a decade and they’re 10% of the U.S. population obviously you’re going to make wealth inequality way worse statistic wise because you’re bringing in such a huge amount of new poor people you’re making the data even worse. No one talks about that.
Also talk about the key issue that the federalreserve or centralbank is privately owned and pays a 6%dividend to wallstreet. It’s fascist to have the government give a monopoly of the printing press essentially to wallstreet. The government pays wallstreet to borrow money. Essentially Bernie sanders promoting modern monetary theory is really far right and not a democrat or left. Bernie sanders is wanting to do what Abraham Lincoln as Lincoln used modern monetary theory to fund the civil war not borrowing from banks but printing the money without issuing debt. Yes it can be inflationary but it’s the government that has the right to create money not a private bank. So Bernie sanders can be considered as extreme far right like Thomas Jefferson since Bernie opposes a private centralbank.

You are correct, but if you think the government had a choice you are not correct. Before Thatcher the country had been subjected to power cuts and soaring oil prices. This lead to the government begging the IMF for a loan. Yes Great Britain was bailed out by the IMF.
Add to that the cost of the Falklands war and the rising burden of the welfare state Britain needed some breathing space.
Selling off the utilities was one of few options available. Had the people who brought the shares held them instead of selling them for a small profit right away they would be reaping the dividends still. Sure the city fat cats took a big chunk of them, but those fat cats were bankrolling the government so they had a lot of power. That was not caused by Thatcher, and she nor any government since had the power to change it.
What she did was to buy the nation time to allow the revenues from North Sea Oil rise to plug some of the gaps.
Worse, its selling off the car you use to drive to work and then hiring the taxi company you sold it to for your commute every day.

Attending Oxford costs the same as any other University, and was free back when Thatcher was a student. Getting in to Oxford involves passing competitive exams that are open to anyone. While intelligence is a privilege, it is perhaps one we should encourage in our leaders.

My dad, who lived in socialist Yugoslavia, then briefly in the 80s moved to the UK to illegally work while on a tourist visa hoping to eventually get a real job and legit visa, didn’t like it and went back to Yugoslavia, and had also travelled throughout the Eastern bloc and later the western world has an interesting conclusion on the postwar consensus (though I’m sure other folks have come to the same conclusion long before him): when the West had a viable rival economic system to compete with, it had to create good living standards and actually care for its people, to show “capitalism” was doing well, hence why it constructed a golden age of capitalism narrative. However, as the west started to clearly win the cold war, western elites could abandon the common people and go back to just enriching themselves, with the USSR collapsing into a shithole and both the post Soviet states & China abandoning socialism/communism/whatever leftist economics, there was no strong example of a competing economic system to compare against, so there was no need to actually make capitalism look good. Everyone was capitalist so the idea that this is normal, or at least as good as you’re gonna get, was easier to push.

Actually the budget was actually pretty decent. Its not perfect but its looking to investment and it is taxing things like capital gains, inheritence, second homes. At least the U.K. has the sense to despise Thatcher in retrospect, here in the U.S. Reagan is still held up as some kind of demigod. Imagine being eighteen when Reagan was running for his second term, and trying to convince anyone that Reagan was doing real damage to the country, it was quite a depressing entrance into our "democracy".
You forget the key component of Thatcher being able to keep inflation low, and that was increasing and maintaining an overvalued £. This killed British exports, which British manufacturing relied on to survive, and why so many manufacturing companies went from being in the black to buried overnight. She was a less competent Liz Truss. A correctly valued £ would have seen manufacturing survive at the cost of higher inflation than under the previous Labour government, which would have exposed her incompetence. Instead she blamed these firms for their failure. Even now manufacturing accounts for half of exports from only 9% of the workforce. Britian would have been in a far stronger position with Callaghan in charge instead of her

Good video. But , you mentioned Frederik Hayek and his economic ideas, but Hayek was only the Godfather of those ideas. And Hayek had said that he was sympathetic to the Nazis. They actually came to fruition by Milton Freidman and his CHICAGO SCHOOL of economics. Chile was the first country where it was put into practice with help from the USA and Britain to overthrow the elected left wing ( NOT COMMUNIST )Government. It would have been a much better video if you had mentioned this. Also, before the Falklands War, Thatcher was not looking that secure. The Falklands War saved her and gave her even more power to do what she wanted.

Instead of mass declining the north and Welsh mining towns, she could have pursued a programme of economic redevelopment. The northerners and Welsh would have been grateful for better and less dangerous work, but instead, She shut the coal mines and left nothing in their place.
She could have let people buy their homes, at market value and used the money to purchase and construct new homes for social housing.
She seems to have forgotten that businesses rely upon customers in the consumer economy, and that if the average consumer cannot afford everyday products, the businesses will be less profitable. She favoured business at the expense of business and the consumer.
She also pursued her goals, often for no practical purpose and for purely ideological reasons, not because it was effective. She cast off the old Tory values of noblesse oblige and responsibility to society established by Disraeli, in favour of a philosophy of let them eat cake.

I didn’t know much about Thatcher until I started listening to punk rock, especially the 80s bands that were calling out her corrupted BS policy that left so many into poverty. She did win three elections. Whatever valid criticisms to be made of Thatcherism it clearly had substantial public support.

But at the peak of her popularity (in June 1982, after the recapture of the Falklands), 59% were satisfied with her performance, while her rating fell as low as 20% satisfied (in March 1990, the month in which there were riots in London against the introduction of the “poll tax”).
Average satisfaction with the way her government was running the country was 32%, compared to an average 59% who were dissatisfied. The low points were 16% satisfied in March 1981 and again in March 1990.

One aspect of neo-liberalism that I seldom see examined is the fact that wherever government services withdraw, private corporations take over. You go from a service owned by the people with a priority of serving the people to a service owned by one of more individuals with a priority of further enriching those individuals.
For all the pompous dismissal of socialists "spending other people's money" it turned out that neo-liberalism cost those other people a whole lot more.
I live in regional Australia, and what this basically means is that companies prioritise service in an area about twenty kilometres from a capital city centre and then forget everywhere else. Oh, the Free Market says its inefficient to put services out there - now, you wouldn't want to be goin' against the Free Market, would you, eh?
