    This is what the non existent tutorial in Tekken 7 should have been. The explanations are clear and easy to absorb. I hope you keep up with them to make it far enough to get into intermediate and advanced. The timestamps on each section is a plus.

      Shaolin Zen hey! Thank you so much for the kind words. I definitely will continue this as it seems many people find it helpful! And as for intermediate and advanced, I absolutely will be getting to them as I finish covering the beginner stuff. Additionally, feel free to subscribe and hit the bell icon if ya wanna keep up to date on the videos as I upload them.

      Yeah definitely. It's also very organized and planned out unlike some twitch streamers posting youtube videos where they just talk randomly without much of a draft.

      @@PeterYMao I would honestly rather the last hit of the round have like a cinematic similar to the Coltra you know depending on where you live if you kick you put in the face there’s a reaction to that a cinematic reaction to that to end around if it’s a punched in the stomach there’s a funny reaction is that what you see I’m doing like that you know Jackie Chan punches having his face is on the camera funny stuff

      If it was a versus game versus streetfighter characters like the one that the creator of this game promised all the fighting game fans 10 years ago that he was 100% going to make a game second verse of Street fighter cross street fighter in the tech in universe in a 3-D fighting world I can’t wait for I really hope he stays true to his word which I believe he will I know it’s gonna be the most amazing crossover fighting him in a long time probably the best thing since marvel versus Capcom so I really look forward to this I hope it comes out soon I’m gonna say that the Indian fighter if he’s in the game which I hope he is he’s gonna completely dominated the entire game lol

    For newer players (like myself) looking to get good at whiff punishing in Tekken, I would highly recommend trying out Claudio! He has a really amazing set of whiff punish tools, probably one of the best in the game.
    His df1,2 has very solid range for a 15f launch string. His hopkick, while not as long-ranged or damaging as df1,2, is easier to execute from a backdash (since it can be performed with ub4 and u4 instead of uf4), is safer on block/whiff, and is much more reliable when off axis from an opponent (it's good for sidestep whiff punishes). Claudio also happens to have a reliable off-axis juggle via hopkick -> f3 -> wr2 for 51 dmg.
    Where Claudio's whiff punishment really shines, however, is at further ranges. 1+2,1+2,f2 is a 58 damage long-ranged string that grants starburst and solid oki, making it his preferred whiff punisher when outside df1 range without starburst or rage. It's also only -14 on block so it is generally a less risky option than df1,2. B4,2 is a very long-ranged double mid string that is especially useful since it is part of Claudio's rage drive, which turns it into a huge launcher that is also plus on block with essentially no pushback. Finally, the godlike STB f1+2,1+2 is an insanely high damage, safe, hit confirmable, double mid launcher string that realigns the opponent on hit and is very fast for its range at 16f. This move is incredible and solidifies Claudio as a character whom you do NOT want to whiff against.

  • @GGenieFGC
    @GGenieFGC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm really loving these guides, they're very clear and I'll definitely be checking out your other ones!
    On the topic of whiffpunishing, I'm having a really hard time doing this on particular types of players.
    The kind of players who like to alternate just poking with throwing out full strings or parts of strings.
    It happens so often that I backdash when I get pressured, I see a whiff, and try to whiffpunish or just take my turn, and I end up getting counterhit by the second or third hit in a string.
    If this happens they end up getting so much free pressure because I'm just second guessing myself all the time of when I should actually try to retaliate.
    I feel like this kind of approach to pressure is so common in mid and low level gameplay, but I can't find any advice on how to deal with it.
    What would you say is a good way to approach this?

    • @PeterYMao
      @PeterYMao  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When the opponent is throwing out strings you will then just have to familiarize yourself with the strings. Some strings only have 1 extension to them so it's best to just be patient if that's the case. In the lower levels players throw out strings all the time so just wait it out. Against better players they may just throw out the first hit and nothing else. This will just really depend. If you want to think about it this way. You don't get punished for not throwing out an attack against a string. You do however get punished if you throw out an attack and get hit by a 2nd or 3rd hit of a string. So I suggest erroring on the side of caution.

    This whiff punishment,shows that there's a gap in frame data.I was a bit bummed out on your next video about frame data not having the recovery frames.But it would be nice to have recovery frames also,alongside the block frames.

    • @PeterYMao
      @PeterYMao  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just so you know, 90+% of everything can be launch punished on whiff. A single jab is -17 on whiff, d/f+1 on whiff is anywhere from -19 to -25 on whiff depending on the character but how does that really help you? Not even the pros know what most things are on whiff. Most people in Tekken if you ask them what something is on block they probably will know it, but something on whiff very few people will know. It's not the most important thing.

    Hi Peter! What's up? If you'd like to make your videos much clearer you should add a 0:00 timestamp above your 1st one. It will cut your video play bar into sections.
    These sections will be visible on the play bar by the viewers so that they can find one specifically easier. This TH-cam option has been available for about 10 or 12 months but still underused by content creators. 😉

    Would you say 3+4 is bryans fastest range 2 whiff punisher? Great video btw

    • @PeterYMao
      @PeterYMao  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey Alexis SJ! 3+4 is not "exactly" range 2 if you test it you will see that on certain characters it is just literally a hair short of range 2. Hahaha, it's literally range 2 (try testing on characters like Ling and some others). However, I digress. 3+4 comes out at 18fr, but then again so does f+4,1. So to answer your question at range 2 f+4,1 is a much better range 2 punisher because it comes out in the same number of frames and launch punishes. If you are in RAGE then you can also use Bryan's RAGE DRIVE b+1+2 as a range 2 whiff punisher because it is also 18fr and guarantees bigger damage than f+4,1.
      Now if we are going to nit pick numbers then d+4 while low in terms of damage does come out in 16fr and hits at the same range that 3+4 does. And a frame perfect Mach Punch technically comes out around 17fr in open play (not from a block punish). I hope that helps Alexis :)

I face problems both at spacing and wiff punishing as i whiff my whiff punishers because of lack of distance judgement but you covered that and thank you. I also have a problem with facing rushdown/pressure. I try to backdash as you suggested but often get caught backdashing and get knocked down. @@PeterYMao I play Kazuya and Lars. For example heihachi with his extreme pressure rushes me down with 1 b2. After the hit lands and i block it i try to back up with back dashing but many times heihachi will throw out, lets say an uf 3 4 and he gets me, or ff 2. As an alternative, i look for a move heihachi does that he is not too plus on block and i throw out a df 2 with kazuya to get a counterhit, but that sometimes gets blocked and i get punished, leading then to more pressure. Its one of the main reason i struggle with tekken

    • @PeterYMao
      @PeterYMao  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cars One Love trust me I also struggle with pressure myself. I play Bryan and unfortunately Bryan like Kazuya does not have many panic moves to throw out.
      However, what you can try from time to time is if you are in constant pressure after your opponent finishes a series of attacks is side stepping and then blocking. It will take a little getting used to at first as it is scary letting go of block to move sideways especially up close. But try doing it in some matches and eventually over time you will find it more comfortable and adjust to it.
      If you find yourself when backdashing and getting hit while backdashing it might be due to an erroneous input. As backdashing should prevent you from being hit out of it

    hello idk if u still andwer questions but i had a couple if u dont mind :))) 1. i can korean bak dash to a meh degree but when im being pressured by my opponant ill often find myself backdashing into a wall and then im stcuk, so what can you really do at the wall? 2. are powercrush moves anygood to break pressure? 3. the big one, so lets talk about higher levels of player for a sec, if there are 2 players and one wiffs the other punishes right? but it begs the question in what is the point in attacking if they will just backdash and make you wiff, and if it does hit and they block there is t any chip damage. so whats the point of attacking?!?! i know that sounds stupid but i come from games like mortal kombat where chip damage is a real threat wich means hitting someone while they r blocking actually does something. im clearly missing something obvious here :P ok well thats alot for reading my dyslexic ass spelling and ty for any answered :))

    • @PeterYMao
      @PeterYMao  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) Korean back dashes are important but understanding your surroundings is also incredibly important. It's not "always" correct to Korean back dash. If you are getting close to the wall sometimes it's better to sidestep and move away from the wall.
      2) Power crush moves are good at breaking pressure, or if you get a read on your opponent's timing. However, this is a very general rule as some character's power crushes are very punishable if blocked so use with caution on that.
      3) The point of attacking is, there are some attacks you can not back dash out of it's range. There is a reason all attacks in Tekken advance you forward to some extent. If your opponent is making you whiff then they are giving up space. Remember back to your question about why you are always Korean backdashing into a wall? I you find the opponent only just backdashing to make you whiff, then they are giving up space. If they backdash, you forwarddash. They backdash, you forward dash. Soon they will have no more space to move backwards. Also, not every attack in the game can be whiff punished. Jabs, electrics, plus many other attacks in the game are not whiff punishable on reaction.

    • @PeterYMao

      It's possible yes. If you think your opponent will throw out an attack you can always just hold back to block. The reason to Korean Back Dash is to create space.

      If you want to play aggressively, you will have to space even better, and be even more on point at whiff punishing. So instead of playing at range 2 or 3, you will need to keep your opponent at range 1 at all times. When they back up, you need to following them a bit, but not run into their attacks. You want to be at range 1 so that your fast high and mid attacks can still connect. Additionally, you will need to make more of an effort to SS to attack your opponent from their whiffs.
