The only thing I don’t like about the 90s anime is that they made Mamoru a University student. In the manga and Crystal he’s 16 and she’s 14 which is fine. But like why did they age him up back then, that’s kinda weird...
@@LisaFevral The anime director's reasons were "we wanted him to be able to drive a car and have lots of money and be worldly" which apparently meant having him be in university. IRONICALLY, when the S season came out and Haruka and Michiru were added to the plot they didn't get aged up despite the fact that they have the same worldy, car driving-ness... Only they have an excess of wealth that never gets explained. They have motorcycles, cars, Haruka's a famous race car drivers, Michiru's a renowned painter and violinist, and both own helicopters ... all of this whilst being in high school? I feel like the only reason the anime didn't age up Haruka and Michiru is because the Mugen Academy storyline was too important to the plot to mess with.
pretty sure it's because of the weird fetishisation of schoolgirls and relationships of older men with schoolgirls that is widely spread in Japan...sadly I think the writers put a little to much of their own personal want into the show...
The “clean pair of underwear” thing was actually kind of a common thing in Japan to teach younger people to have good hygiene. It was like the “brush your teeth and floss!” commonly found in western children’s cartoons.
Usagi kept getting new weapons and new brooches every season sorely so they can sell toys and merch. I am not sure but I think even Naoko herself expressed her frustration of having to come up with a new weapon every story arc, which I think is why she usually draws Usagi with the OG moon stick in her newer arts
interesting! As an adult, especially recently, i keep thinking of the redesigns surpringly often. I keep thinking to myself how smart it was, both for financial but also storyline reasons. Every time you see a pic of Sailor moon you can identify where in her journey she currently was. I totally thought it was Naoko's initiative, but is interesting to hear she hated it.
Fun fact: the live-action, as cheesy and cheap as it was, actually made a better job in develop usagi and mamoru's relationship than both animes and manga combined. I do recommend to check it out because it has great aspects to it, apart from the obviously cheap production value.
The live action stole my heart when I was a teenager. Not only did they develop those relationships more, the Sailor V storyline was impeccable. Any anime turned love action will be cheesy but they were always able to bring the heart out in it and give you the emotions of the scenarios in a believable way.
It had a fair number of weak points, though. The Darkury mini-arc stands out to me. It was like they wanted to dip into the evil Sentai Ranger thing for a bit but didn't know how to properly set it up or resolve it.
I never really minded that Usagi was a crybaby given that she was a fourteen year old girl who had her entire life changed because she helped a cat. It makes sense that until Rei came along she cried a lot seeing as her only ally at the time could only make a dense fog. Also it is a crime that you didn't talk about some of the great songs with lyrics such as: Moon Revenge, Ai no Senshi, Todokanu Omoi, or any ending song because so many are so good. Like every background song you mentioned is a bop but we can't leave out some other bangers. Also more fun mythology stuff in Sailor Moon - Ami uses a lyre in her Aqua Rhapsody attack because the god Hermes/Mercury made one in order to aid him in stealing some of Apollo's cows. - The Oak part of Makoto's Oak Evolution is because the god Zeus/Jupiter has the oak tree as a sacred object. In the manga she even gets a wreath of oak leaves. - In arc 4 when the girls call upon their planetary powers, all but two of the castles are named after a moon surrounding their planet. Since Mercury and Venus don't have moons, their castles are named after space probes. - The space sword, deep mirror, and garnet orb are based off Japanese regalia. - Rei's crows are named after Ares/Mars' two sons. Phobos means fear while Deimos means dread. - Endymion is named after a man in Greek myth. One myth states that the titaness Selene fell in love with him while he was asleep and begged Zeus to have him be young and asleep forever so she may gaze upon him. - Mythology wise, Pluto is associated with death while Saturn is associated with time meaning that Setsuna should be called Sailor Saturn while Hotaru should be Sailor Pluto. I'm pretty sure that change was made intentionally though.
Oh yeah I didn’t wanna talk about lyrics bc I don’t know anything about Japanese and translations are not always sufficient, and I think ami helped usagi most bc of her being able to figure out how to defeat monsters that are a bit more complex

One of my favorite aspects of the 90s Sailor Moon is the coloring and line-art, plus I like the anime art style. I come from a Russian household, although in Canada, and I grew up watching Soviet Cartoons, which have a very "school art supplies" type of aesthetic, which I love. Reminds me of primary school, in a good way. The way it was colored reminded me of those whimsical Soviet animations. This is also the favorite cartoon or was, I don't know, of a childhood friend. I don't know how she's right now, but if you can read this, thank you for the happy memories. I also really like Usagi. I personally don't like the Sailor Moon Crystal art style. The color palette wasn't whimsical nor had the "happy child's coloring" feel of the original.
Crystal art style looks like the HDR was turned up way too high, thus the bright and dark points are too close. And it looks like everything is in focus so your eye isn't drawn to the subject, the characters in the 90s anime always stood out from the background.
I love the 90’s version of sailor moon, I was able to buy the whole thing on DVD which I’m so happy about. I mean it has its problems but the good stuff like the fillers I love those because we get to see the girls become friends.
Yes girl, thank you for speaking on Minako in the manga! Naoko Takeuchi went into great detail as to why Sailor Venus was the leader and closest to Usagi. But in the anime, they sideline her for Rei who constantly bullied Usagi. And I get it, it's the whole you argue & fight with the ones you're closest with, but after the 1st season it got old real quick!
Yeah, minako is also really close to rei in the manga, they fight a bit there bc of minako wanted to also not take exams like rei haha but both of them are usually heavy lifters when it comes to offensive attacks against monsters and such. I wish Venus got to show her leader side more, I like her wielding the sword too!
I loved your music segment. I agree about Mamoru and Usagi: I always wished we saw them organically fall in love and not just be in love due to their past. I feel sorry for Seiya. Haruka and Michiru are my favorite couple on the show anyway.
I’m so sad I had to mute a three lights’ song that I had bratz dancing to ahaha same, haruka and michiru are SO fun to watch they have such a fun dynamic while being a really well developed couple
this video was great, I love how you didnt just "review" the show but analyzed and discussed various things from color theory, animation and writing style, and also the differences between the seriousness scenes and the comedic scenes. A lot of people forget that this show is really a great comedy, it has superb comedic timing. Im happy you discussed the creative control over the show with writing, and the amount of male perspective of women that took control over this show, those inconsistencies are a clear result of that. with Rei in particular, who has a very big trait in the manga of having a certain aversion to boys, in the 90s anime she is head over heels for them like the others. But there are some changes, or additions I think I should say, that I absolutely adore, like Rei and Usagis strong relationship with eachother, making them the closest out of the group despite their constant bickering I think is a great dynamic (minus that stupid Mamo competition in the first arc) Overall the 90s anime is still my favorite adaptation, with my favorite artstyle of the adaptations, but it has a lot of inconsistencies which can either hinder the overall narrative or feel problematic even, I think overall its still a strong serialized monster of the week story and Im happy I grew up on it
omg yeah the comedic timing is literally top notch, I love that bc it's hard to nail sometimes in animation even though it seems like it would be easier than in film. I like Rei in the 90s, except for a couple moments where she went too far(like when she pushed Usagi on the ground for no reason) and the fact that she's boy crazy when it would've been better if she was the opposite just even for variety and somewhat of an ace representation. (Rei is actually my fave character, so I ADORE when usagi says things like "Sailor Mars and the others", or "Mamoru and Rei", since she's my fave I love that stuff ahahah) Yeah I think that when you really analyze it you can see where the outside influences messed with the story in a bad way, and when it actually contributed to it. Like the transformation sequences were not drawn out in the manga, so it was the first time when they were shown and its great. They are a lot of things to love and some things to criticize, just like with any show, bc big projects are always made by tons of ppl and you can't just expect it to have one streamlined vision since it's a group effort.
I do like the scene in 4th season when Usagi and Chibiusa are in bath. It feels like a scene full of childish fun and kindness they need after all these hard days. And that's one of unusual scene where both girls act like sisters loved and cared about each other without any drama or danger. Just a common thing for family
Yeah i think so too, and what makes it not creepy is the framing and the way it’s treated to compare to some other weird scenes woth upskirt shots that are voyeuristic

The first season was the only one where the inner scouts were portrayed strong in the anime. The next ones, especially last one, they are just there and 90% of the times their attacks are dodged or without any effect. The last season Galaxia killed them off in 1 minute when they went into her domain, they weren't able to beat a villan even with the 4 of them, and the only time they had success in battle was when Aluminium Siren threw juice boxes at them and they used their powers to stop those...
yeah what I like about crystal is that you can clearly see why the Senshi exist - they have powerful attacks and serve their purpose whereas in the 90s they got pushed to the side almost immediately removing any need for their skills entirely

I hated that they always commented on the girls weight. Exspecially Usagis. It annoyed me the most of Mamos and Chibiusas side. Like that is their significant other/mother like, wtf. That annoyed me so much as a kid. Like Sailor Moon is really thin and even if she was a little chubby you should not comment on it so hard
I think the worst instance was Luna in season 1 and 2 in particular. She literally sounded like she WANTED Usagi to have an eating disorder with how she constantly said she was too fat and would end up fat or no one would want to be with a heavy girl. It's a wonder Usgai didn't have low self-esteem with a talking cat like that living with her food-policing her. (Artemis is the superior cat, he treats Minako like a pal who he sometimes can banter with, where as Luna likes to rip into Usagi too much) Mamoru in season 1 came off harsh too, but I can get past it since they were both always roasting each other, and they seemed to almost look forward to getting a chance to bicker. So Usagi walking around, without paying attention and eating multiple snacks and proclaiming that she is happy to cause Motoki said he liked girls with plump figures, it seemed like an easy way to just tease her for Mamoru to say that Motoki's insistence on liking fat girls was dumb cause it made Usagi get annoyed. With Chibiusa she's just a rude little girl who doesn't know any better and treats Usagi like she's her goofy older sister.
@@Nightman221k I know what you mean but in the pegus seasonnin particular there was a moment that stuck with me since I was a child. That was when Usagi got caught by a hola hoop and suddenly she was proclamed as fat and chibiusa and mamoru where talking pretty harshly about it. It honestly disgusted me so much back than, because neither me nor my father would talk about my mother like that. That was just horrible for me. But luna, I definitly agree on. Like Usagi had the worst break up with mamoru, with him being so mean to her that usagi wants to feal better by eating comfort food and lunas comfort try was: If you get fat no men with want you? Luna this girl is over with men right now. Like wtf? Thats not comforting her thats dragging her down.

It was kind of funny when Tuxedo Mask caught her on the trapeze and Chibiusa was holding onto her legs and he didn't notice Chibimoon and was like, "Sailor Moon--! ... Uh... Have you gotten heavier?" and Usagi got indignant and was like, "Don't be ridiculous! I've got Chibimoon hanging on my leg!" >:[ People give Luna a pass since she's a cute cat, but she could be legitimately mean to Usagi. Like sometimes I wonder if Luna would chose to live with Usagi if not for obligation, cause most of the time Luna fangirls about Ami for being smart, dedicated, and obedient; but acts like Usagi is annoying for her to be around. I think Luna in Crystal, the manga, and PGSM loves Usagi like a sister; but in the anime she has less of a soft side.
Same here. I'm like, do you realize Usagi/ Sailor Moon will literally be Queen of the world and alter her future if she chooses. Plus SM has more of lean figure than a big one.
A bit late to the party, but I wanted to say how totally and completely impressed I am with this video, you as a content creator, and the Sailor Moon animators as a whole! So so so good. Seriously, I've watched so many trivia videos about the franchise at this point but I was still not prepared for how much legitimately interesting information and opinions were in this video. You really did an incredible job here. Super thorough, super intelligent, and just a really really good watch. I had this in my Watch Later for a few weeks before actually getting to it, but man... you better believe I stayed up until 3am watching it, unable to go to bed, because I was so hooked. Just really excellent work.
24:46 For me it kinda sucks that I’m only able to watch English dub due to a visual impairment (I’m considered legally blind) when a lot of the anime I want to watch is only available in subtitles or done in poor quality. Because of all this, when I find a good dub, that anime is immediately buried in my heart 💜

When you said that sailor moon is the type of media where girls are allowed to be both girly and powerful it reminded me of totally spies, in a sense that the show is also fashion oriented and unapologetically girly, yet the main girl trio is competent. You're so right at 11:10 I had a similar experience growing up. Pink used to be my favorite color, but for a time I only wore black. It's like I didn't want to be seen, let alone be seen as a girl. It was very hard for me to feel comfortable in my grown-up body. It was like I was mad at the color pink. Now that I grew up, and finally feel comfortable in myself... Great analysis! If you are not done with Sailor Moon yet, I recommend the live action version of 2004, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. There's only the first season and they did a good job in adapting the story in a new way and developing the main romance, in my opinion. Even so, it’s also a product of its time. Although some things are better, I don’t think Mamoru can be considered a good love interest in any media !

Yes! I loved so much about this video, and so much about this franchise, but those two were definitely moments that made me stop what I was doing. The love/feeling/impact of World Shaking is something that's been inside me for all these years, but I had completely forgotten about it until this video. Just really cool and incredible sound design for that one, and the animation is the cherry on top. And the transformation music for the Starlights! Holy moly that melody is so good and invigorates my soul.
The worst part about Nephryte and Molly is the same one with Usagi and Mamoru: In the Manga he's supposed to be around Mamoru's age. Only Kunzite is supposed to be older than Mamoru and Jadeite is even the same age as the girls, so if they had stick with the manga's ages , Nephryte would be a teenager that looks older as most handsome teenagers do on manga and anime.
Love the part about how infectious the sounds are. I remember I found a channel somewhere that isolated all the sailor soldier attacks so it was just the sound effects and it’s so pleasing to hear those 90s anime sounds

Hey, I watched half of the series when it came out. I just finished a huge fight with cancer over the past year. Rewatching and finishing the whole series helped me make it through.

i LOVED this video! i binged sailor moon back in october (read manga right after) and you made SO many great points that i was feeling while watching the show. while the series holds a special place in my heart, its not perfect and it has many questionable things that should be discussed! id like to add that even tho i preferred usagi to end up with mamoru bc of the whole being together in a past life thing, the manga made it more natural for them to fall in love and get together as oppose to how in the anime they literally only fell for one another once they found out each other's identities. also aging up mamoru from the manga literally did nothing to the plot. idk why the male writers and creators felt the need to exhibit such a large age-gap relationship and make it seem so desirable to young girls. its very telling to see what the values and behaviours are of the people behind making these KID shows 😬😬

@@SM-ce1uy no one says that it directly causes this, but even Takeuchi herself wasn't happy with the way animation creators warped her vision for the relationships in the show. If you like Sailor Moon, you have to have some respect for the original creator that was trying to make a story about friendship and romance that wasn't idealizing creepy men's fantasies, but rather focused on girls' fantasies. I loved watching this show, but I am not going to refrain from criticizing things that are bad about it. I think this video was quite a bit in favour of the show, and criticizing creepy things in media doesn't mean that you can't enjoy it too🤷🏻♀️
Also the bit when You talk about Koan encouraging Usagi to focus on being desirable reminded me of one Totally Spies episode. Clover got rejected by some boy and she concluded that it is not worth it to take care of yourself if she gets rejected, so through big part of that episode she is sad and unkempt, but then she starts to enjoy her mission, she saves Sam and Alex and I thought moral of the episode would be "take care of yourself for yourself" and that she genuinely likes make up and fashion and won't do it for the boys' approval anymore but NO, she comes back to being sad and at the end she discovers that the boy who rejected her had then and still has a girlfriend, Clover feels better about it and comes back to her usual self. I thougt maybe someone here would be interested in that story or remembers it so I dropped it.
Yeah, I wish it wouldn’t be about guys at all bc I don’t get how the existence of men is in any way that interesting or important to a woman’s life, but i guess the creators of shows don’t think so
29:05 These kinda of messages are not in the original manga or Crystal. The 90s anime had a ton of men working on the show and they inserted a lot of more “stereotypical feminine things”, like wanted to get skinny to get a boy and rei and usagis whole dynamic. I think overall the 90s anime is a good adaptation, but I do feel like it butchered characters like Mars, Tuxedo Mask and honestly Sailor Moon herself. Also I still find the Venus backstory weird because the man that she liked was clearly way older than her.
@@LisaFevral I thank you for making this video (I just finished it)! This made me more aware to a ton of the issues that are in this compared to its manga counterpart. I agree with them ruining Minako’s character as well and feel like despite the added filler, the characters (Mainly the inner gaurdians) don’t really ever evolve because they are pushed to the sidelines once a new character is introduced. I just feel like a lot of these things the manga did better besides the filler aspect that I wish Crystal added in. EDIT: I hope maybe one day you make an analysis video on the manga / crystal versions of the story.
Yeah I wish crystal had a little bit more filler to get the characters interactions and such but at the same time I know their funding is not high enough to be able to animate that much filler in the crystal style of animation. And also I want better for the inner senshi bc they deserve more time on screen/pages!

Love this very thoughtful review! Grew up on Sailor Moon (Canadian 90s kid, so Dic dub it was, but later watched the original anime as well as read the manga) and now I'm re-watching the series with my spouse. Watching it as an adult, I'm realizing a lot of stuff I didn't notice as a kid. A lot of stuff you aptly pointed out. One of the most evident things I see now, is how it is produced through the male lens, you can tell mostly men worked on the anime. That slightly dampens my enjoyment of the show now, but at least I can acknowledge it for what it is and hope that if the show was created now, the production crew would be much more diverse. You also pointed out something I don't hear a lot but that really bothers me as a viewer as well. Being 'magical' or fantasy/sci-fi it's not always fair to look for logic in a created world. But I'm a big fan of 'making it make sense' and I really hated how they changed the perceived power of the (mostly inner) Senshi's attacks. It was almost always to have an easier time moving the plot, but didn't work outside that contained episode's plot line. The inner Senshi very clearly show their power in the end of season 1 (even though they die, there immense power is still evident). One would assume that power would only get stronger, it shouldn't be weaker unless there's a clear reason for it (one is ill, near death, experiencing trauma, self-doubt, etc), but time and time again the inner Senshi don't measure up and there's no real reason for them to even accompany Usagi on some of these missions. Anyway, super loved the video!! Thanks for the quality content!

Even though Dic dub is flawed, i'm glad they dubbed it(if im not mistaken it was done here in canada), bc it introduced a wider audience to SM and made it accessible to people who speak English everywhere. It's sad that so much of this show was warped by the heavy handed male gaze, but I can still see a lot of Naoko Takeuchi in it nonetheless, and I adore 90s animation haha I 100% agree, especially in scenes like the one with the fire not being out out by Sailor Mercury's attack. It genuinely made no sense to me. It's one thing to have small inconsistencies for the plot, and it's another to make one of the inner Senshi that's supposed to guard the princess be weaker than a child's magical toy. It just feels disrespectful haha but alas, some show runners don't care about that stuff as much as we do. and thank you again🥰
GREAT video. I love all of your detailed analysis. I agree with most of your conclusions, but I wanted to add a possible explanation for one of your cons of the series. You mention that you don't understand why Usagi finishes every Monster of the Week, especially since the senshi's job is to protect her and reserve her power for necessary situations. Although I totally agree that this doesn't really make sense, from a plot standpoint, I believe the writers thought this was necessary because she is the main character. The 90s was all about surrounding plots around main characters and leaving side characters to subsist on secondary plot crumbs. That's a pretty obvious answer, but probably the best explanation. I would also say that if Usagi only seldom used her power, It would give the impression that she is really powerful because it seems her power is being reserved for the "Big Boss" at the end. That would give us little doubt that she would defeat the Boss without trouble, which doesn't build anticipation for that final battle. For example, Sailor Saturn rarely uses her power which makes the audience assume she is very powerful and that all of her moves are "finisher" moves. Also, Usa using her powers often gives her the chance to change and grow in her skills. Thanks for the video. Loving the nostalgia fix! 😍
oh yeah I totally agree with you as to why they gave all that time for usagi to finish the monsters, it's just sometimes in some episodes it would break the pacing up and be out of place regardless of the show being structured for usagi, and even though I would like to see everyone get more to do, I think that the most glaring issue was just logical discrepancies haha but you're definitely right about the reason for it, that's for sure I would've also loved to see them train too, using their powers to get better at it to prepare for battle, bc that would give us more opportunity to see them use their attacks and such (including Usa, ofc hehe) thank you for watching 🥰🥰🤍

I watch these Sailor Moon analysis because I CAN'T with the plot, the childhood nostalgia isn't strong enough to get over the cheesy and repetitive plotlines. But I love everything about the art and design and music in Sailor Moon. I can watch Sailor Moon art and edits just bc how pretty it is.

Same here. I remember enjoying watching the show when I was in kindergarten but as an adult, I find it utterly boring. Now, I only enjoy it for the aesthetics, which I find endlessly inspiring.
@@shrekobama5832 Yes, you're right! It's a comfort show. For me personally I like watching the first half of the episodes with no fighting. The fights became boring for me. But I love watching them hang out, do homework, go to cafes and everything else.

The sailor transformations sequences (especially Uranus and a Neptune) music was a favorite part of mine. I had the English subtitled Ice movie on VHS format growing up. (can’t remember the name of the movie at the moment) Between ages 9 and 10 I rewatched those transformations so much it warped and ruined the tape a bit. I had the other movies too but I didn’t like them as much. I live in the US and this was one of the first anime series I ever watched on Toonami. I remember caring more about those anime than I did any other type of video entertainment for a long time. Then my hormones kicked in and I was no longer obsessed with Anime…. Instead I was obsessed with relationship exploration. Worst decision ever, should of stuck with Anime.
Bought all the new viz sets of the 90s show. My daughters enjoy the show and find it weird dad loves it more than they do. 20 years from now they will understand. The moment usagi broke a sword with the moon stick. That’s the only touchdown that gets me cheering. Also the moon rod vs wise mans reaper sword thingy. Pink rods vs swords is just brilliant.
I’m glad they get to grow up with it too and it’s fun to watch it with your dad, it’s gonna be a great memory/tradition in the future! Yeah you’re right, it fits conceptually that usagi’s weapon is not a blade, it’s just my personal preference for swords haha
@@LisaFevral I was watching City Hunter (if I understood Japanese I think it would make decent background noise😂 the plot is pretty standard so you can "watch" passively) and the style 😍 it's also an 80s/90s anime. But again, I'll probably watch here and there ,mostly because of the style.

Thank you for this in depth video! I grew up on the DIC/Cloverway Dub before I really knew about censorship. I got back into Sailor Moon when Viz Media made the re-dub of Sailor Moon and was really happy to see all the relationships and characters done correctly. I do miss some of the DIC original songs though.

-The "panty shots" were so uncomfortable, they kinda leave on Season 2 and they kinda return on Season 4 -The friendship problem is so present on the magical girl anime Wedding Peach, that becomes so annoying -The sounds were so perfect, and that's something that fails on Eternal movies, they repeat the sounds a lot and that becomes annoying, like before each thing had their unique sound and know everything is mixed on a bad way -Naoko nowdays makes pressure to everyone to respect her story, at least when it comes to dubs of the animes and movies, because that were already made, on Crystal Latinoamerican dub they were using the names and temrs we got at the 90s, such as Serena and Sailor Scout, that they came from Dic english dub. And I get this perspective where she got so mad about this and she demanded to record everything again with the original names and terms, and they did it, now with Eternal movies I'm glad that she ask for everything to do it her way -Usagi and Mamoru relationship is weird and rare on the 90s, they focus on them in a weird way, we have season 1 and 2 were they are the main couple, on Season 3 Mamoru is almost absent, just there when the story needs him, Season 4 the plot needs him near the end and season 5 completely absent, and even with he being there most of the episodes, he is useless and left behind, it's so weird, like their relationship is just a fact, not to mention the age difference -The thing that I like from the 90s is the development of the characters, especially with the villains -The innapropiate relationships are so weird, not only here, in the 90s anime in general becuase they are wrong, we know that and the same time, we don't want them to breakup, on Sakura Card Captor, Sakura's parents when they meet, she was a STUDENT and he was a TEACHER, and they lived happily together and Sakura and her old brother are there, like what we can do about :v -I don't like how Chibiusa is obsess with Mamoru knowing that he is her father, both anime and manga/crystal/Eternal movies portrays this and is so weird, and the kiss... no comments -I'm done with the protective father with the daughter but no the son, I have watched on too many media and I'm done witht that -Naoko drew the Amazone Quartet as the way they are in the anime, so I want to think that they're teenagers 1:16:06 that's something the live action has, and the franchise Precure use this as well, It would be amazing if Crystal and the movies had this, like no changing the hairstyle but yes the color of the hair and the eyes
Yeah I agree with all of these points! I guess the Amazoness quartet might be teenagers and then it would explain the way they were drawn, but I don’t quite get why chibiusa’s uniform is so different from theirs, if they’re supposed to be her inner senshi

Also I know Netflix’s love to make childhood shows to be more mature so having kali uchis do the soundtrack would help with keeping it mature but still having the original colours of the show
I don’t like him saying things like “you’ll get fat” and such, it’s not really bickering, bickering would be fine, for example, it’s done a lot better with Seiya in the anime

He said something like “you’ll turn into a pork bun” which was to make a connection to him calling her bunhead and how she was “eating her friends”. Although people may interpret it as him calling her fat, I think it was more about making the connection to her being a bunhead
Did I watch the show? No. Did I watch this 1.5 hr long video? Yes. I love that this is low key educational regarding art, I never thought of that "yellow hair + dark blue room = greenish hair" thing until you pointed it out. Also, wtf is that normalization of college men being with children & 8-10 year olds looking like 17 year olds with bubz. Weird af. Subconsciously trying to present the idea to young kids like it's normal- How much time did this video take you to make & how do you edit your video + screen record + audio, all in one without something glitching in the final edit? I'm editing yt vids for a year now and I always analize videos of other creators haha, I imagine you making these for hours and hours & multiple weeks. Good job! Great job tbh.
omg I'm glad you liked it even though you haven't seen the show! yeah I absolutely hate these age gaps, it so SO creepy!! I think this video took me a really long time since I had to watch all 5 seasons and each seasons has like 46 episodes or something like that. I record audio and screen with either quick time player or OBS, and record video separately and then edit it in final cut!
My favorite anime everrrr ❤️ But I have to say, the story is so much better in the manga/Crystal/eternal movies. Still a classic and fun anime to watch. ❤️
My issue was making Neptune and Uranus cousins, as a little girl if they had explained girls can date too it would have been like oh, i didnt know that okay. But making them cousins was wrong and super creepy. Also aging up Tuxedo mask, he became way too old for her when they didnt need to do that.
I loved this video! I always had a lot of problems with the 90s anime AND the manga/crystal (tho the 90s anime has a very special place in my heart), and I'd love to just like...smoosh the adaptions together to make something that has all the good parts of the 90s anime and crystal. Like, the inners are WAY stronger in crystal but I've always personally felt their actual characterization in the 90s anime was more entertaining to watch, and they got more fleshed out. I'd love to see both things be true for sure haha. Even in the manga I didn't care much for Usagi and Mamoru's romance...he was nicer, yeah! And I prefer that, but sometimes it felt like it eclipsed Usagi's relationships with her friends? I just don't care about Mamoru personally, I think, and that's purely my opinion. But I've always been a Seiya Preferrer I guess. A lot of 90s and early 2000s shoujo manga and anime had a weird age gap problem, and even the manga got in on it with the Inners x Shitennou..it's just so weird.
OH one more thing I'd say Crystal was even worse about the Chibi Usa x Mamoru thing it was like. Actually very disturbing in Crystal as it was more explicit imo I hated it so much
Omg yeah I agree with all of this! Mamoru and Usagi are better in manga and crystal but I’m just more of a platonic relationships first kind of person so it always rubs me the wrong way when romance overshadows friendship and/or family
I will say, Im glad 90s Sailor Moon got anime, even though they CHANGED NEARLY ALL THE MANGA (Seriously the manga, especially in Black Moon and Nehelinia arc are dark as FREAK! and WHY AGE UP Mamoru in Anime more than Manga????) DARK AND PAST STORY ARCS! Like I understand in one part, in Japan, suici*e and all was hard to depicit as was HIGH back then but the changes in writing made some since (Like Sailor moon unable to transform because doubt in her heart as Sailor Moon is imbodiment of friendship and coming together) and the evil as explained in show, and magna, rather if its backstory or art direction, can make the story last long and flush out the characters and villain. THIS is why I love the sailor moon crystal writing (In some aspects of Sailor Guardians in Dream Arc (Which I agree making as movie instead of episodes as is shirt ARC as goes straight in the story) and the Galaxyia Arc as well. I do wish ppl read the MANGA more as the 90s version ANIME changed LOTS of things from fashion wise to fit art design, writing, character backstory, etc because yes was dark, but the changes in Anime made it more friendly in a good way by tackling the core aspects in the Manga.
I used to watch this show as a child and it was on an arabic channel *cause i am arab* called spacetoon it was such a great show and i remeber being in love with the music and the clothes and evey thing about the show was soo amazing

The only thing I don’t like about the 90s anime is that they made Mamoru a University student. In the manga and Crystal he’s 16 and she’s 14 which is fine. But like why did they age him up back then, that’s kinda weird...

@@LisaFevral The anime director's reasons were "we wanted him to be able to drive a car and have lots of money and be worldly" which apparently meant having him be in university. IRONICALLY, when the S season came out and Haruka and Michiru were added to the plot they didn't get aged up despite the fact that they have the same worldy, car driving-ness... Only they have an excess of wealth that never gets explained. They have motorcycles, cars, Haruka's a famous race car drivers, Michiru's a renowned painter and violinist, and both own helicopters ... all of this whilst being in high school? I feel like the only reason the anime didn't age up Haruka and Michiru is because the Mugen Academy storyline was too important to the plot to mess with.
Yeah, even if it takes place in a different country (Japan) and culture, it still is wrong.
pretty sure it's because of the weird fetishisation of schoolgirls and relationships of older men with schoolgirls that is widely spread in Japan...sadly I think the writers put a little to much of their own personal want into the show...
The “clean pair of underwear” thing was actually kind of a common thing in Japan to teach younger people to have good hygiene. It was like the “brush your teeth and floss!” commonly found in western children’s cartoons.

Usagi kept getting new weapons and new brooches every season sorely so they can sell toys and merch. I am not sure but I think even Naoko herself expressed her frustration of having to come up with a new weapon every story arc, which I think is why she usually draws Usagi with the OG moon stick in her newer arts
interesting! As an adult, especially recently, i keep thinking of the redesigns surpringly often. I keep thinking to myself how smart it was, both for financial but also storyline reasons. Every time you see a pic of Sailor moon you can identify where in her journey she currently was. I totally thought it was Naoko's initiative, but is interesting to hear she hated it.

Fun fact: the live-action, as cheesy and cheap as it was, actually made a better job in develop usagi and mamoru's relationship than both animes and manga combined.
I do recommend to check it out because it has great aspects to it, apart from the obviously cheap production value.
yeah I heard a lot of good things about the live action!
The live action stole my heart when I was a teenager. Not only did they develop those relationships more, the Sailor V storyline was impeccable. Any anime turned love action will be cheesy but they were always able to bring the heart out in it and give you the emotions of the scenarios in a believable way.
It had a fair number of weak points, though. The Darkury mini-arc stands out to me. It was like they wanted to dip into the evil Sentai Ranger thing for a bit but didn't know how to properly set it up or resolve it.
I never really minded that Usagi was a crybaby given that she was a fourteen year old girl who had her entire life changed because she helped a cat. It makes sense that until Rei came along she cried a lot seeing as her only ally at the time could only make a dense fog. Also it is a crime that you didn't talk about some of the great songs with lyrics such as: Moon Revenge, Ai no Senshi, Todokanu Omoi, or any ending song because so many are so good. Like every background song you mentioned is a bop but we can't leave out some other bangers.
Also more fun mythology stuff in Sailor Moon
- Ami uses a lyre in her Aqua Rhapsody attack because the god Hermes/Mercury made one in order to aid him in stealing some of Apollo's cows.
- The Oak part of Makoto's Oak Evolution is because the god Zeus/Jupiter has the oak tree as a sacred object. In the manga she even gets a wreath of oak leaves.
- In arc 4 when the girls call upon their planetary powers, all but two of the castles are named after a moon surrounding their planet. Since Mercury and Venus don't have moons, their castles are named after space probes.
- The space sword, deep mirror, and garnet orb are based off Japanese regalia.
- Rei's crows are named after Ares/Mars' two sons. Phobos means fear while Deimos means dread.
- Endymion is named after a man in Greek myth. One myth states that the titaness Selene fell in love with him while he was asleep and begged Zeus to have him be young and asleep forever so she may gaze upon him.
- Mythology wise, Pluto is associated with death while Saturn is associated with time meaning that Setsuna should be called Sailor Saturn while Hotaru should be Sailor Pluto. I'm pretty sure that change was made intentionally though.
Oh yeah I didn’t wanna talk about lyrics bc I don’t know anything about Japanese and translations are not always sufficient, and I think ami helped usagi most bc of her being able to figure out how to defeat monsters that are a bit more complex

One of my favorite aspects of the 90s Sailor Moon is the coloring and line-art, plus I like the anime art style. I come from a Russian household, although in Canada, and I grew up watching Soviet Cartoons, which have a very "school art supplies" type of aesthetic, which I love. Reminds me of primary school, in a good way. The way it was colored reminded me of those whimsical Soviet animations.
This is also the favorite cartoon or was, I don't know, of a childhood friend. I don't know how she's right now, but if you can read this, thank you for the happy memories.
I also really like Usagi.
I personally don't like the Sailor Moon Crystal art style. The color palette wasn't whimsical nor had the "happy child's coloring" feel of the original.

Crystal art style looks like the HDR was turned up way too high, thus the bright and dark points are too close.
And it looks like everything is in focus so your eye isn't drawn to the subject, the characters in the 90s anime always stood out from the background.

Yes girl, thank you for speaking on Minako in the manga! Naoko Takeuchi went into great detail as to why Sailor Venus was the leader and closest to Usagi.
But in the anime, they sideline her for Rei who constantly bullied Usagi.
And I get it, it's the whole you argue & fight with the ones you're closest with, but after the 1st season it got old real quick!
Yeah, minako is also really close to rei in the manga, they fight a bit there bc of minako wanted to also not take exams like rei haha but both of them are usually heavy lifters when it comes to offensive attacks against monsters and such. I wish Venus got to show her leader side more, I like her wielding the sword too!

this video was great, I love how you didnt just "review" the show but analyzed and discussed various things from color theory, animation and writing style, and also the differences between the seriousness scenes and the comedic scenes. A lot of people forget that this show is really a great comedy, it has superb comedic timing.
Im happy you discussed the creative control over the show with writing, and the amount of male perspective of women that took control over this show, those inconsistencies are a clear result of that. with Rei in particular, who has a very big trait in the manga of having a certain aversion to boys, in the 90s anime she is head over heels for them like the others. But there are some changes, or additions I think I should say, that I absolutely adore, like Rei and Usagis strong relationship with eachother, making them the closest out of the group despite their constant bickering I think is a great dynamic (minus that stupid Mamo competition in the first arc)
Overall the 90s anime is still my favorite adaptation, with my favorite artstyle of the adaptations, but it has a lot of inconsistencies which can either hinder the overall narrative or feel problematic even, I think overall its still a strong serialized monster of the week story and Im happy I grew up on it
omg yeah the comedic timing is literally top notch, I love that bc it's hard to nail sometimes in animation even though it seems like it would be easier than in film.
I like Rei in the 90s, except for a couple moments where she went too far(like when she pushed Usagi on the ground for no reason) and the fact that she's boy crazy when it would've been better if she was the opposite just even for variety and somewhat of an ace representation. (Rei is actually my fave character, so I ADORE when usagi says things like "Sailor Mars and the others", or "Mamoru and Rei", since she's my fave I love that stuff ahahah)
Yeah I think that when you really analyze it you can see where the outside influences messed with the story in a bad way, and when it actually contributed to it. Like the transformation sequences were not drawn out in the manga, so it was the first time when they were shown and its great. They are a lot of things to love and some things to criticize, just like with any show, bc big projects are always made by tons of ppl and you can't just expect it to have one streamlined vision since it's a group effort.

I do like the scene in 4th season when Usagi and Chibiusa are in bath. It feels like a scene full of childish fun and kindness they need after all these hard days. And that's one of unusual scene where both girls act like sisters loved and cared about each other without any drama or danger. Just a common thing for family
Yeah i think so too, and what makes it not creepy is the framing and the way it’s treated to compare to some other weird scenes woth upskirt shots that are voyeuristic

The first season was the only one where the inner scouts were portrayed strong in the anime. The next ones, especially last one, they are just there and 90% of the times their attacks are dodged or without any effect. The last season Galaxia killed them off in 1 minute when they went into her domain, they weren't able to beat a villan even with the 4 of them, and the only time they had success in battle was when Aluminium Siren threw juice boxes at them and they used their powers to stop those...
yeah what I like about crystal is that you can clearly see why the Senshi exist - they have powerful attacks and serve their purpose whereas in the 90s they got pushed to the side almost immediately removing any need for their skills entirely

I hated that they always commented on the girls weight. Exspecially Usagis. It annoyed me the most of Mamos and Chibiusas side. Like that is their significant other/mother like, wtf.
That annoyed me so much as a kid. Like Sailor Moon is really thin and even if she was a little chubby you should not comment on it so hard

I think the worst instance was Luna in season 1 and 2 in particular. She literally sounded like she WANTED Usagi to have an eating disorder with how she constantly said she was too fat and would end up fat or no one would want to be with a heavy girl. It's a wonder Usgai didn't have low self-esteem with a talking cat like that living with her food-policing her. (Artemis is the superior cat, he treats Minako like a pal who he sometimes can banter with, where as Luna likes to rip into Usagi too much)
Mamoru in season 1 came off harsh too, but I can get past it since they were both always roasting each other, and they seemed to almost look forward to getting a chance to bicker. So Usagi walking around, without paying attention and eating multiple snacks and proclaiming that she is happy to cause Motoki said he liked girls with plump figures, it seemed like an easy way to just tease her for Mamoru to say that Motoki's insistence on liking fat girls was dumb cause it made Usagi get annoyed. With Chibiusa she's just a rude little girl who doesn't know any better and treats Usagi like she's her goofy older sister.
@@Nightman221k I know what you mean but in the pegus seasonnin particular there was a moment that stuck with me since I was a child. That was when Usagi got caught by a hola hoop and suddenly she was proclamed as fat and chibiusa and mamoru where talking pretty harshly about it. It honestly disgusted me so much back than, because neither me nor my father would talk about my mother like that. That was just horrible for me.
But luna, I definitly agree on. Like Usagi had the worst break up with mamoru, with him being so mean to her that usagi wants to feal better by eating comfort food and lunas comfort try was: If you get fat no men with want you?
Luna this girl is over with men right now. Like wtf? Thats not comforting her thats dragging her down.

Have you gotten heavier?" and Usagi got indignant and was like, "Don't be ridiculous! I've got Chibimoon hanging on my leg!" >:[
People give Luna a pass since she's a cute cat, but she could be legitimately mean to Usagi. Like sometimes I wonder if Luna would chose to live with Usagi if not for obligation, cause most of the time Luna fangirls about Ami for being smart, dedicated, and obedient; but acts like Usagi is annoying for her to be around. I think Luna in Crystal, the manga, and PGSM loves Usagi like a sister; but in the anime she has less of a soft side.
Same here. I'm like, do you realize Usagi/ Sailor Moon will literally be Queen of the world and alter her future if she chooses. Plus SM has more of lean figure than a big one.
A bit late to the party, but I wanted to say how totally and completely impressed I am with this video, you as a content creator, and the Sailor Moon animators as a whole! So so so good. Seriously, I've watched so many trivia videos about the franchise at this point but I was still not prepared for how much legitimately interesting information and opinions were in this video. Great analysis! If you are not done with Sailor Moon yet, I recommend the live action version of 2004, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. There's only the first season and they did a good job in adapting the story in a new way and developing the main romance, in my opinion. Even so, it’s also a product of its time. Although some things are better, I don’t think Mamoru can be considered a good love interest in any media !

Yes! I loved so much about this video, and so much about this franchise, but those two were definitely moments that made me stop what I was doing. The love/feeling/impact of World Shaking is something that's been inside me for all these years, but I had completely forgotten about it until this video. Just really cool and incredible sound design for that one, and the animation is the cherry on top. And the transformation music for the Starlights! Holy moly that melody is so good and invigorates my soul.
The worst part about Nephryte and Molly is the same one with Usagi and Mamoru: In the Manga he's supposed to be around Mamoru's age. Only Kunzite is supposed to be older than Mamoru and Jadeite is even the same age as the girls, so if they had stick with the manga's ages , Nephryte would be a teenager that looks older as most handsome teenagers do on manga and anime.
Love the part about how infectious the sounds are. I remember I found a channel somewhere that isolated all the sailor soldier attacks so it was just the sound effects and it’s so pleasing to hear those 90s anime sounds

i LOVED this video! i binged sailor moon back in october (read manga right after) and you made SO many great points that i was feeling while watching the show. while the series holds a special place in my heart, its not perfect and it has many questionable things that should be discussed! id like to add that even tho i preferred usagi to end up with mamoru bc of the whole being together in a past life thing, the manga made it more natural for them to fall in love and get together as oppose to how in the anime they literally only fell for one another once they found out each other's identities. also aging up mamoru from the manga literally did nothing to the plot. idk why the male writers and creators felt the need to exhibit such a large age-gap relationship and make it seem so desirable to young girls. its very telling to see what the values and behaviours are of the people behind making these KID shows 😬😬

@@SM-ce1uy no one says that it directly causes this, but even Takeuchi herself wasn't happy with the way animation creators warped her vision for the relationships in the show. If you like Sailor Moon, you have to have some respect for the original creator that was trying to make a story about friendship and romance that wasn't idealizing creepy men's fantasies, but rather focused on girls' fantasies. I loved watching this show, but I am not going to refrain from criticizing things that are bad about it. I think this video was quite a bit in favour of the show, and criticizing creepy things in media doesn't mean that you can't enjoy it too🤷🏻♀️

Also the bit when You talk about Koan encouraging Usagi to focus on being desirable reminded me of one Totally Spies episode.
Clover got rejected by some boy and she concluded that it is not worth it to take care of yourself if she gets rejected, so through big part of that episode she is sad and unkempt, but then she starts to enjoy her mission, she saves Sam and Alex and I thought moral of the episode would be "take care of yourself for yourself" and that she genuinely likes make up and fashion and won't do it for the boys' approval anymore but NO, she comes back to being sad and at the end she discovers that the boy who rejected her had then and still has a girlfriend, Clover feels better about it and comes back to her usual self.
I thougt maybe someone here would be interested in that story or remembers it so I dropped it.

29:05 These kinda of messages are not in the original manga or Crystal. The 90s anime had a ton of men working on the show and they inserted a lot of more “stereotypical feminine things”, like wanted to get skinny to get a boy and rei and usagis whole dynamic. I think overall the 90s anime is a good adaptation, but I do feel like it butchered characters like Mars, Tuxedo Mask and honestly Sailor Moon herself. Also I still find the Venus backstory weird because the man that she liked was clearly way older than her.

@@LisaFevral I thank you for making this video (I just finished it)! This made me more aware to a ton of the issues that are in this compared to its manga counterpart. I agree with them ruining Minako’s character as well and feel like despite the added filler, the characters (Mainly the inner gaurdians) don’t really ever evolve because they are pushed to the sidelines once a new character is introduced. I just feel like a lot of these things the manga did better besides the filler aspect that I wish Crystal added in.
EDIT: I hope maybe one day you make an analysis video on the manga / crystal versions of the story.
Yeah I wish crystal had a little bit more filler to get the characters interactions and such but at the same time I know their funding is not high enough to be able to animate that much filler in the crystal style of animation. And also I want better for the inner senshi bc they deserve more time on screen/pages!

Love this very thoughtful review! Grew up on Sailor Moon (Canadian 90s kid, so Dic dub it was, but later watched the original anime as well as read the manga) and now I'm re-watching the series with my spouse. Watching it as an adult, I'm realizing a lot of stuff I didn't notice as a kid. A lot of stuff you aptly pointed out. One of the most evident things I see now, is how it is produced through the male lens, you can tell mostly men worked on the anime. That slightly dampens my enjoyment of the show now, but at least I can acknowledge it for what it is and hope that if the show was created now, the production crew would be much more diverse.
You also pointed out something I don't hear a lot but that really bothers me as a viewer as well. Being 'magical' or fantasy/sci-fi it's not always fair to look for logic in a created world. But I'm a big fan of 'making it make sense' and I really hated how they changed the perceived power of the (mostly inner) Senshi's attacks. It was almost always to have an easier time moving the plot, but didn't work outside that contained episode's plot line. The inner Senshi very clearly show their power in the end of season 1 (even though they die, there immense power is still evident). One would assume that power would only get stronger, it shouldn't be weaker unless there's a clear reason for it (one is ill, near death, experiencing trauma, self-doubt, etc), but time and time again the inner Senshi don't measure up and there's no real reason for them to even accompany Usagi on some of these missions.

It's sad that so much of this show was warped by the heavy handed male gaze, but I can still see a lot of Naoko Takeuchi in it nonetheless, and I adore 90s animation haha
I 100% agree, especially in scenes like the one with the fire not being out out by Sailor Mercury's attack. It genuinely made no sense to me. It's one thing to have small inconsistencies for the plot, and it's another to make one of the inner Senshi that's supposed to guard the princess be weaker than a child's magical toy. It just feels disrespectful haha but alas, some show runners don't care about that stuff as much as we do.

GREAT video. I love all of your detailed analysis. I agree with most of your conclusions, but I wanted to add a possible explanation for one of your cons of the series.
You mention that you don't understand why Usagi finishes every Monster of the Week, especially since the senshi's job is to protect her and reserve her power for necessary situations.
Although I totally agree that this doesn't really make sense, from a plot standpoint, I believe the writers thought this was necessary because she is the main character. The 90s was all about surrounding plots around main characters and leaving side characters to subsist on secondary plot crumbs.
That's a pretty obvious answer, but probably the best explanation. I would also say that if Usagi only seldom used her power, It would give the impression that she is really powerful because it seems her power is being reserved for the "Big Boss" at the end. That would give us little doubt that she would defeat the Boss without trouble, which doesn't build anticipation for that final battle. For example, Sailor Saturn rarely uses her power which makes the audience assume she is very powerful and that all of her moves are "finisher" moves.
Also, Usa using her powers often gives her the chance to change and grow in her skills.

oh yeah I totally agree with you as to why they gave all that time for usagi to finish the monsters, it's just sometimes in some episodes it would break the pacing up and be out of place regardless of the show being structured for usagi, and even though I would like to see everyone get more to do, I think that the most glaring issue was just logical discrepancies haha but you're definitely right about the reason for it, that's for sure
I would've also loved to see them train too, using their powers to get better at it to prepare for battle, bc that would give us more opportunity to see them use their attacks and such (including Usa, ofc hehe)

I watch these Sailor Moon analysis because I CAN'T with the plot, the childhood nostalgia isn't strong enough to get over the cheesy and repetitive plotlines. But I love everything about the art and design and music in Sailor Moon. I can watch Sailor Moon art and edits just bc how pretty it is.

The sailor transformations sequences (especially Uranus and a Neptune) music was a favorite part of mine. I had the English subtitled Ice movie on VHS format growing up. (can’t remember the name of the movie at the moment) Between ages 9 and 10 I rewatched those transformations so much it warped and ruined the tape a bit.
I had the other movies too but I didn’t like them as much. I live in the US and this was one of the first anime series I ever watched on Toonami. I remember caring more about those anime than I did any other type of video entertainment for a long time.
Then my hormones kicked in and I was no longer obsessed with Anime…. Instead I was obsessed with relationship exploration. Worst decision ever, should of stuck with Anime.

Bought all the new viz sets of the 90s show. My daughters enjoy the show and find it weird dad loves it more than they do. 20 years from now they will understand. The moment usagi broke a sword with the moon stick. That’s the only touchdown that gets me cheering. Also the moon rod vs wise mans reaper sword thingy. Pink rods vs swords is just brilliant.
I’m glad they get to grow up with it too and it’s fun to watch it with your dad, it’s gonna be a great memory/tradition in the future!
Yeah you’re right, it fits conceptually that usagi’s weapon is not a blade, it’s just my personal preference for swords haha

Thank you for this in depth video! I grew up on the DIC/Cloverway Dub before I really knew about censorship. I got back into Sailor Moon when Viz Media made the re-dub of Sailor Moon and was really happy to see all the relationships and characters done correctly. I do miss some of the DIC original songs though.

-The friendship problem is so present on the magical girl anime Wedding Peach, that becomes so annoying
-The sounds were so perfect, and that's something that fails on Eternal movies, they repeat the sounds a lot and that becomes annoying, like before each thing had their unique sound and know everything is mixed on a bad way
-Naoko nowdays makes pressure to everyone to respect her story, at least when it comes to dubs of the animes and movies, because that were already made, on Crystal Latinoamerican dub they were using the names and temrs we got at the 90s, such as Serena and Sailor Scout, that they came from Dic english dub. And I get this perspective where she got so mad about this and she demanded to record everything again with the original names and terms, and they did it, now with Eternal movies I'm glad that she ask for everything to do it her way
-Usagi and Mamoru relationship is weird and rare on the 90s, they focus on them in a weird way, we have season 1 and 2 were they are the main couple, on Season 3 Mamoru is almost absent, just there when the story needs him, Season 4 the plot needs him near the end and season 5 completely absent, and even with he being there most of the episodes, he is useless and left behind, it's so weird, like their relationship is just a fact, not to mention the age difference
-The thing that I like from the 90s is the development of the characters, especially with the villains

Yeah I agree with all of these points! I guess the Amazoness quartet might be teenagers and then it would explain the way they were drawn, but I don’t quite get why chibiusa’s uniform is so different from theirs, if they’re supposed to be her inner senshi

I may be reaching by saying this but if they ever make a sailor moon remake like a movie or show they need kali uchis to help the soundtrack like imagine usagi walking down a busy street with neon pink lights it’s raining and u hear telepatia from the stores 😩😩
Also I know Netflix’s love to make childhood shows to be more mature so having kali uchis do the soundtrack would help with keeping it mature but still having the original colours of the show

I know people have issues with anime Mamoru, but I actually like him and his bickering-teasing relationship with Usagi.
I don’t like him saying things like “you’ll get fat” and such, it’s not really bickering, bickering would be fine, for example, it’s done a lot better with Seiya in the anime

He said something like “you’ll turn into a pork bun” which was to make a connection to him calling her bunhead and how she was “eating her friends”. Although people may interpret it as him calling her fat, I think it was more about making the connection to her being a bunhead

I love that this is low key educational regarding art, I never thought of that "yellow hair + dark blue room = greenish hair" thing until you pointed it out. Also, wtf is that normalization of college men being with children & 8-10 year olds looking like 17 year olds with bubz. Weird af. How much time did this video take you to make & how do you edit your video + screen record + audio, all in one without something glitching in the final edit? I'm editing yt vids for a year now and I always analize videos of other creators haha, I imagine you making these for hours and hours & multiple weeks. Good job! Great job tbh.

I think this video took me a really long time since I had to watch all 5 seasons and each seasons has like 46 episodes or something like that. I record audio and screen with either quick time player or OBS, and record video separately and then edit it in final cut!

My issue was making Neptune and Uranus cousins, as a little girl if they had explained girls can date too it would have been like oh, i didnt know that okay. But making them cousins was wrong and super creepy. Also aging up Tuxedo mask, he became way too old for her when they didnt need to do that.
I loved this video! I always had a lot of problems with the 90s anime AND the manga/crystal (tho the 90s anime has a very special place in my heart), and I'd love to just like...smoosh the adaptions together to make something that has all the good parts of the 90s anime and crystal. Like, the inners are WAY stronger in crystal but I've always personally felt their actual characterization in the 90s anime was more entertaining to watch, and they got more fleshed out. I'd love to see both things be true for sure haha.
Even in the manga I didn't care much for Usagi and Mamoru's romance...he was nicer, yeah! And I prefer that, but sometimes it felt like it eclipsed Usagi's relationships with her friends? I just don't care about Mamoru personally, I think, and that's purely my opinion. But I've always been a Seiya Preferrer I guess.
A lot of 90s and early 2000s shoujo manga and anime had a weird age gap problem, and even the manga got in on it with the Inners x Shitennou..it's just so weird.
OH one more thing I'd say Crystal was even worse about the Chibi Usa x Mamoru thing it was like. Actually very disturbing in Crystal as it was more explicit imo I hated it so much
Omg yeah I agree with all of this! Mamoru and Usagi are better in manga and crystal but I’m just more of a platonic relationships first kind of person so it always rubs me the wrong way when romance overshadows friendship and/or family

I will say, Im glad 90s Sailor Moon got anime, even though they CHANGED NEARLY ALL THE MANGA (Seriously the manga, especially in Black Moon and Nehelinia arc are dark as FREAK! and WHY AGE UP Mamoru in Anime more than Manga????) DARK AND PAST STORY ARCS! Like I understand in one part, in Japan, suici*e and all was hard to depicit as was HIGH back then but the changes in writing made some since (Like Sailor moon unable to transform because doubt in her heart as Sailor Moon is imbodiment of friendship and coming together) and the evil as explained in show, and magna, rather if its backstory or art direction, can make the story last long and flush out the characters and villain. THIS is why I love the sailor moon crystal writing (In some aspects of Sailor Guardians in Dream Arc (Which I agree making as movie instead of episodes as is shirt ARC as goes straight in the story) and the Galaxyia Arc as well. I do wish ppl read the MANGA more as the 90s version ANIME changed LOTS of things from fashion wise to fit art design, writing, character backstory, etc because yes was dark, but the changes in Anime made it more friendly in a good way by tackling the core aspects in the Manga.
