  • Thank you John Prine for the oodles of songs. The playful, the mournful, the ones that remind us of others we’ve known or remind us of ourselves. I learned the third verse of this one wrong from my Mom but I hope you don’t mind if I still sing it like she sings it. It’s an honor to join with so many others in celebrating your birthday with a damn fine song. 💫

One of my favorite John Prine songs, and you sing it beautifully. Tasty banjo, too. I think JP is looking down and enjoying your version.

Beautiful job! This is my favorite Prine song, it captures such a shameful time in America, it’s hard to believe young women were ever treated like this.

Love this song, Mike’s banjo & your soulful singing, Ruthy! I wonder if your Mom got her 3rd verse from Johnny Cash’s version? th-cam.com/video/bURsuos3Nto/w-d-xo.html

Okay, so I did a little digging, and Cash’s version came out in 1985.
The year before, Gail Davies recorded a version (with Jerry Douglas on dobro & Dolly on harmony!), also with the 3rd verse change.
However, the earliest version with the 3rd verse switch was Tammy Wynette’s in 1982!
