  • This week’s film breakdown analyzes the Baltimore Ravens Quarterback Lamar Jackson and the offense the Ravens are running. The offensive coordinator, Greg Roman, designed the 49ers 2012-2014 offense with Colin Kaepernick, and is now using the same exact scheme and plays with Lamar Jackson. Using the coaches all-22 game film, this episode analyzes the zone read, and how Jackson and the Ravens are using it in 2019.

    Something crazy I found while doing research for this episode: In 2012, Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman dominated the NFL with a zone read scheme, taking the 49ers to the superbowl where they would lose to John Harbaugh’s Ravens. Also in 2012, Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan used a similar scheme to aid Robert Griffin III to becoming the rookie of the year. Now in 2019, Greg Roman is using the same exact scheme with the Ravens, where Jim Harbaugh’s brother John is still the head coach, RG3 is the backup quarterback and who just beat Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers.

      That's probably partly why the 49ers held them to their lowest offensive output & only 1 sustained drive. The other TD came on a fumble & short field. Even with that, LJ was able to feast on the moments when their defense lacked discipline to keep their edges. Made for a great game.

      @@mylestate I think the weather had a lot to do with the 49ers defense having the outing they did versus the Ravens 49ers defense is extremely fast and they like to play fast attack the ball they are very very fast and inclement weather and conditions of rain can sometimes stop your speed that you have on defense because of bad footing and not being able to cut as quickly as you would on dry ground weather really played a big part in this game for the 49ers and still the Ravens only won by three points and Lamar Jackson only had 105 yards passing and if Jimmy Garoppolo didn't fumble then the final score at the end of regulation would have been 17 to 13 San Francisco Jimmy garoppolo's fumble put them at 20 points on the afternoon.

    • @Mike__B

      Agreed, much better passer than Kaepernick was. Also he takes angles that Kaepernick didn't, Kaep was fast but wasn't going to put his shoulder down and go through a defender on every single run, Lamar is definitely a running back that also knows how to throw the ball really well. Unfortunately the NFL has trained players, with yellow flags, to treat QBs as delicate flowers so no one has put the hit on him consistently so there's going to be a natural level of hesitation which is really an unseen weapon for the Ravens, hell after the SF game Harbaugh was screaming at defenders for hitting him hard near the sidelines calling it a cheap shot etc.

    Kap's 2012 Divisional round game against the Packers. Is arguably, the most dominant QB performance, in NFL history. 250+ yards passing, and an NFL record, 180 yards rushing, and 4 total tds (2 passing 2 rushing). Green Bay had no answer for this brotha, on that day. And then the next week against Atlanta -- who did a great job taking away the QB run -- threw all over them. And led a great comeback victory , on the road in the Georgia Come. That got them to the Super Bowl. That's something jokers can never take away from Kap.

      @@PaulGaither 16-21 for 223 yards 1 td and no turnovers is pretty efficient, I'd say. And yes, brotha Frank Gore -- as well as LaMichael James -- was abled to eat that day, why?... Because the fear of god brotha Kap was putting in NFL defenses, if you allowed him to keep that ball off the edge on those zone reads. So here's a play that shows you how impactful brotha Kap was, during that 2012 Super Bowl run. I believe the play happened in the second half, of that said NFC championship game. So they're (49ers) lined up in the pistol, the ball is hiked. Kap drops back to do a play action, off their zone read concept. And what do you know... Frank went to the left of Colin, instead of being to the right (where the play action mesh read occurs). So basically, Kap ends up doing a fake, to an invisible man (where Frank was supposed to be). And you know how the edge rusher for the Falcons responds? He actually paused, and honored the fake, although their was no man there for Kap to fake to. Now that's impact. Kap psychologically, had defenses and defenders, not being able to play reactionary instinctual football. It was ingrained in their minds, that you hold the edge, on those zone reads, to keep gap integrity, on brotha Kap if he keeps it. Put RESPEK on the brotha's name, and game.

      1. Forced 3 passes in a row to Crabtree. On one down, the #2 read of the play was wide open to the TE on a curl in the end zone who sat in the zone. On 4th down with a time out in his pocket, the leader of the offense saw a cover zero. In the post game conference, he said that did NOT have a check against that and he chose to just throw a lob up to Crabtree. Good QBs know the situation and call the time out and they scheme up something else.
      2. With first and 10 from the 18, 40+ seconds and two time outs, he just threw a lob to Crabtree who had Sherman all over him in 2013 (Jan 2014)
      3. He continued to get exposed. Teams learned their code words and tendencies. The Rams knew what plays were coming and on one famous play, didn't even cover the WRs. With both WRs waving for the ball and his attention, Colin just handed it off to the HB for no gain or 1 yard when he had a TD to either side.

The brotha literally impacts every element of the game, and transcends, the X's and O's. To best put it. This brotha has god gifted Instinctual Awareness. The way he feels pressure, contact, and defenders, is like something I've never seen before. He's literally the real life adaptation, of Goku's Ultra Instinct ability. Like I've stated since watching the October 1st 2016 matchup against Clemson.. this brotha, is the best football player in the world. And the NFL was gonna have a real problem, once he entered the league. And not only did he enter the league -- and has since tore it up to shreds -- he's actually doing it for my team, and OUR city. And he's doing it in a way, that's untraditional, and unrelatable, to most. From his box braids, to the South Floridian accent, to his very dark pigmented skin, and plays the QB position how brothas traditionally play it, in the hood.. which is straight Street Ball style. Couldn't be more proud as a fan of Lamar's, and couldn't be prouder, of having this brother being the face of our franchise, and city. Great analysis by the way.

    Ironically, what killed the zone read in 2013-ish was the Ravens. They asked for clarification, could you unload on a QB who was executing a fake run. The NFL's answer was emphatic, hell yes. As a longtime 49ers fan, I just want to say... Greg Roman's scheme never crumbled. The 49ers collapse was mostly due to lack of personnel on the field, and drama in the front office. Any type of run-heavy office has to be paired with an above-average office to win games. We went from having one of the most talented rosters, especially on defense, to just being gutted on both sides of the ball. Three of the best interior linebackers in the league, all gone due to injury and early unexpected retirement. Two of the best defensive linemen in the league, gone. 1st rounder RT, unexpected retirement. It was just all bad. And since we had to pay Colin, it's not like you just get to throw money at the situation. You've gotta draft your way out of it over the course of years. Gladly, we did. Replacing all that missing talent on defense by spending 4 1st round picks on defensive linemen.

    As a 49er fan, late last season and early this season I immediately recognized that Roman had instituted the same offense he made with Kap years ago. It's basically identical with only some minor tweaks and changes to give the illusion that it's different, but it's not. I would compare it to making 2 identical cakes, but one cake gets pink frosting, and the other cake has white frosting. But at the end of the day they're still the same cakes, just a different outside "look". Kap and this same offense eventually got figured out and the style went out of vogue, it'll happen again with the Ravens within the next season or two. One thing is for certain, Greg Roman is truly the epitome of the phrase 'one trick pony".

    I believe the key to deciphering the enigma that is this ravens offense is identifying the position of the tight end, then youll be able to know if its a motion slap one way, or if its a same side slap. Then you can train the linebackers and safeties to not try to hit lamar as hard, but force him out of bounds for minimal to no gains. And even if he chooses not to go out of bounds, by then the rest of the defense will be able to swarm Lamar.

      Bad eye discipline by rookie 49ers linebackers is what gave up edge contain to Lamar. If the Linebackers stay in their assignments, they would have stopped more of Lamar's runs to the edges. This is a very common rookie mistake, and they will correct it. Play correctly in the scheme, and 49ers win.
      49ers team is very young and still learning how to play. It will be good for a long time, but is still learning and improving. Same with the Ravens. Could be a rivalry for many years.

    We heard the same off season argument last year. The ravens will not (probably) maintain historic numbers year after year, but ultimately scheme isn't everything. I think the biggest cause for teams falling off ends up being that they lose key personnel. Their coordinators will end up getting head coach jobs elsewhere. Their star players will age, sign with other teams, and get hurt. The biggest reason for the ravens current success really is that their past 2-3 years of drafts & free agency has brought in an unusually high quality of players. They have 12 pro bowlers, at least half of which weren't even with the team 2 years ago and the other half weren't considered for pro bowls in years past likely due to the fact that the success of the team is making them get more attention.

Lamar is so dang talented as a football player, that he makes any concept that is good look great.

      Lamar Jackson gets hit more than any quarterback in the league. Facts

    • @citrustaco
      @citrustaco 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Here are some facts and data to back it up.
      1. Sacks. Lamar is amongst the lowest in sacks (22) in 13 games. And he's #1 among full time QBs with at least 9 starts in yards lost from sacks, with only 106.
      www.espn.com/nfl/stats/player/_/view/offense/table/passing/sort/sacks/dir/desc
      Only Carr, Goff, and Prescott are lower among QBs who have played 13 games. And a good chunk of Lamar's "sacks" ended with him scrambling out of bounds for a loss.
      2. Big hits in the pocket. Being in the pocket when it collapses is dangerous. And the more pass attempts you do, the more prone you are to big hits. Many QBs take big shots just as the camera pans as he throws the ball. Fewer pass attempts and sitting out 4th quarters in blowouts help to keep Lamar from taking big hits.
      3. Scrambling. Unlike other runners like Cam Newton who try to run over defenders, Lamar craftily avoids big hits. Most of Lamar's designed runs are sweeps where he is tackled safely by the sidelines. When Lamar is shifty and goes inside, he avoids the big hit, so when he is tackled, he is usually tackled from BEHIND, and not in FRONT taking on all that contact. By being used to running, he knows when to get down and out of bounds. Many pocket passers when they run, they get down late, because they aren't used to it. So they take huge hits.
      th-cam.com/video/C4M1O0X5488/w-d-xo.html
      Lamar wouldn't have taken this hit. He would have found a way to get out of bounds or get his head down earlier. If you notice, Lamar doesn't slide feet first. If the hit is coming, he simply falls down head first without sliding avoiding the big hit.
      Shifty runners stay healthy longer. Look at the careers of Vick, Young, Wilson, Tarkenton, Cunningham, etc. Bruisers like Cam are prone to getting hurt.
      In NO WAY am I saying Lamar doesn't get hit at all. I am saying he takes the fewest BIG direct hits of any other QB in the league. It's hard to find video of him taking big shots.
      Here is a video showing how he avoids the big hit. Any other QB would get hurt.

    You don't believe San Francisco's defense handled that offense well? Sure, they may have given up a bunch of rushing yards, however they only gave up two TDs all day.. And at the end of the day, what matters MORE than TD's? They held Baltimore scoreless through the entire second half, up until that FG they hit in the closing seconds to win..
    So while SF certainly done a better job in defending against this offense, it wasn't nearly as bad as it could've been.. They gave their offense a chance to win that game, and you can't really ask a whole lot more from your defense than that.. It's not their fault that Shanny blew it with that ridiculous play-call on 4th and 1..

      49ers did a good job at stopping the Ravens. Held them to half of their normal score.
      However 49ers inexperienced Linebackers had bad eye discipline on too many plays and gave up edge contain, allowing Lamar to run to the outside too often. He ran much less than usual, but still, the Linebackers made to many mistakes. This is a very common rookie Linebacker mistake. They will learn from it and correct it.
      Both teams are good. Both are young and improving, especially the 49ers. Lots of very young, talented players gaining experience and improving every week.

      The 49ers played Lamar tough, that's fersure, but he rushed for over 100 yards, juked a couple guys out of their shoes, and had some nice throws in TERRIBLE conditions. I wouldn't say he "destroyed" the 49ers, but he played great, and is league MVP.

    • @CaptnCrunch247
      @CaptnCrunch247 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlexRollinsNFL - Well I would definitely agree that he's an MVP candidate for sure, and there's no arguing against your point that he put up good numbers on the ground. I also agree that he made the Niners defenders look silly a couple times throughout that game, but SF definitely did a better job slowing that offense down than any other defense has since Baltimore has been on this streak of dominance..
      You're never going to completely stop an athlete like Lamar Jackson.. He's gonna get his stats one way or the other. And even though they gave up over a hundred yards rushing to him, I still believe they did a pretty good job of containing that offense as a whole.. Not to mention they gave their own offense the opportunity to go win that game in the end, and they blew it.. And that's what this loss boils down to - missed opportunities on offense. Baltimore came into that game averaging something like 36 points per game, and that Niner D held them scoreless through the entire second half, right up until they hit that game winning field goal.. Unfortunately, Jimmy G and the offense couldn't do anything to capitalize on that..

    So basically you are saying that this year's ravens are just a god send. The Ravens had an absolute steal during the draft 2 years ago but no one realized until now 🤯. Not to mention an offensive coordinator and team that was literally meant to work with Lamar in the first place. Hopefully this team will be one to remember

      very perceptive Sarah, the Steelers 3-4 was the only defense to give Lamar trouble this year. Was easier to fill and fold and scrape exchange within that scheme

  • @matrixphijr
    @matrixphijr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Obviously, Roman has made tweaks to his offense at each of his stops, but you're absolutely right that the overall scheme is the same. The Niners in 2012 were built on defense, and didn't typically need much from their offense. But their offensive stats that year somewhat mirror this Ravens team's: 2500 rushing yards, split mostly among 3 players (Gore, Kendall Hunter, Kaepernick), and a passing offense (albeit one with an 1100 yard receiver in Crabtree and also featuring a 35 year old Randy Moss) with a large chunk of yardage and TDs from its TEs.
    But I'll tell you what -- check out the 2015 Buffalo Bills season. They didn't have nearly the same caliber of players as either of these other two teams, but Greg Roman was their OC that year. Tyrod Taylor threw for 3000 yards, 20 TDs, and 6 INTs. LeSean McCoy ran for almost 900 yards, Tyrod and Karlos Williams for 500 each. Sammy Watkins had a 1000 yard receiving season, but Charles Clay (at that time a hot TE around the league) had 50+ receptions for over 500 yards and 3 TDs. It's virtually the same as well. Eerily, in fact.

    Moves like Sayers and Sanders and an arm that is greatly improved. These by themselves don't guarantee success. Reading the defenses by hours of study are also needed. Lamar puts in the time and has proven that he understands these defenses. The difference between Jackson and Flacco is that Jackson WILL go through his reads. With Jacksons agility, the linebackers have to STAY in their lanes and NOT blitz because they KNOW that if they miss (and most do) Lamar will have an open lane, The defenses worst nightmare? Lamar in open space.

    Funny I saw this when we (Niners) played them. Their whole game looked like exactly what Roman was trying to run with us (And I'm guessing the real reason we gave Alex Smith's job to Kap) just with a much better QB to run it. Roman tried to institute this at the wrong time in SF, seems to be working better in Baltimore but we'll see. It has failed before.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not the same offense. Roman added QB power runs, QB zone runs, etc. in addition to what he did with Kap. Lamar is a much better passer and a shiftier runner than Kap.
