As a fairly new male sewist, this video was HUGE for finding some great patterns. Bought 6 right after watching!

As I came to making mens clothes via making medieval clothing and Larp costumes I'm far more used to making a waistcoat with the main fabric on the back than one with a lining back :) Lots of different styles over the centuries.
It is frustrating how little menswear patterns there are especially as there is definitely an increase in men doing sewing as a hobby.

I agree! I hope we start seeing more menswear patterns!

Another great place to find men's patterns is in the costumes and historic section of pattern companies. I found an awesome suit for my son for at theatre class production (ended up getting cancelled so I didn't have to make it) but it was a great pattern. I can't remember which company but I think it was likely Simplicity. You'll have to get busy making him some merino blend t's to go under that vest and the blazer!

McCalls7987 is a good one for chinos and shorts. I'm currently making shorts from it. I sew for a house full of men so I already have most of these patterns but its nice to hear more good patterns out there. iI will be picking up a few you mentioned. Working on a suit for right now and plan on using the Thread Theory vest for it. I too just do not get the unlined blazer. anyway, happy sewing. Can't wait to see how things come out for you.

Thank you for this video, Whitney! I’m so anxious to see your son’s Italy wardrobe as sewn by Mom! Sewing for men definitely has its challenges (finding patterns is one of them) and I have never found the “perfect” pattern for my 6’7” husband and 6’5” son both with very broad shoulders, no rear ends, and long, long legs! What I have done is scouted out the patterns for the garments they were requesting (mostly button up shirts and golf polos) and used those patterns as a base. I then would carefully take apart one of their old shirts that fit well and use that as my pattern base. That way I knew where to lengthen and broaden the pdf pattern. It is a time consuming effort, but once done, the pattern fits perfectly and can be used over and over again!

Whitney thanks so much for this! As a mom of three boys, I find the lack of patterns exasperating! Honestly, how many more skirt pattern do we need for women 🫣please do more of these videos especially fitting. All of my men have very different bodies and different fitting needs. One of my boys extremely slender and my 13 year is extremely broad everywhere. The recommendation on the Fairfield shirt was much needed. We need a pattern that are secret pajama dress pants.

Thanks for the video! I wanted to mention that I have sewn up the Sanders Button Up by Elbe Textiles for my son, and I loved the result. The pockets were a little fiddly, but I figured it out. I made it in a linen and I am hoping it will be a good work shirt for him for years to come. Now I want to try some of those Wardrobe By Me patterns. I have also sewn for my husband, and I know how you feel about a more tepid response to all the hard work. I have had some success with the Lahja Dressing Gown (really a bathrobe) and a Kwik Sew hoodie I made for him. Happy sewing!

My go to men's button up is wardrobe by me, Jensen shirt. I did 2 long sleeved for my husband for the winter. Working on 4 short sleeved for the summer. Finished one yesterday, cutting out one today, washing the fabric for the third one today, and UPS has the fabric for the 4th one, to be delivered next week. My husband lost some weight during the past couple of years. I'm helping updating his closet.
I do really like Fairfield back darts. I might try that later for making a more formal work shirt for him.
