How to Replace A Sprinkler Valve Solenoid Hunter Valve Solenoid

- When a sprinkler valve stops working or there is a leak around the solenoid of your sprinkler control valve, it may be time to replace the solenoid with a new one.

In this video I will show you how to replace a sprinkler valve solenoid on a Hunter ICV valve and how to wire it back in. Main thing to be careful of, is to not cross thread it while you are screwing the new solenoid into the valve. And also wire the solenoid in with a little twist and a good weather proof wire connector. This will help you with your sprinkler system troubleshooting.

Just curious would it be too much to do a quick solder on those wires especially if it is your home system? Then put a waterproof cap on it.

Hunter PV1, zone 6 suddenly stopped popping up. Not sure why... the manual solenoid trick didn’t work, the bleeder screw sprayed water, but the heads still didn’t pop up! I then took off the valve bonnet, turned on zone & water gushed up from valve... so what do you think? Solenoid plunger stuck down?

What is the center of the solenoid is attached to the valve and the top tube with wires came off? How do I get the center (where the gasket is) off? Will, it break anything if I use pliers?
Do you have to shut off power at the breaker before replacing solenoids? Thanks!
No. On a conventional system there is only power running to the solenoid when the zone is trying to run. But do make sure the controller is not running and the dial is turn to the off position. You can unplug the controller to be safe, although I do not do that. Now there are other types of systems that it is necessary to shut the power off before working on any of the wiring.
You should look at the Wago lever nuts.

It actually does not matter which wire coming out of the solenoid goes to power and common as long as one goes power and one to common.

On the solenoid it doesn't matter which one connects to the power and which one connects to the common just as long as one wire connects to the power and one connects to the common. As long as the controller is set to off you can work on the wiring of the system. On a conventional system, power only runs through the system when it is trying to run. You can always unplug the controller and as long as the battery is good in it, it will hold all your programming.

Does the valve working in ac work in dc?
No. There are AC solenoids and DC laching solenoid. If you want to use a battery operated controller you will need to change out the solenoids to DC laching ones.

No. As long as the system is off you will not need to shut the power off. On a conventional system there is only power going to the solenoid when the system is trying to turn that solenoid and valve on. Others wise there is no power running to it. But as always. Be very careful when working on and around electricity.
did all of this but the valve still runs. At what point I change out the valve. the electric looks good.

No it does not matter which wire goes to each lead out of the solenoid. Just as long as one goes to the power wire you want to use for that valve and one goes to the common.
I have a set of Hunter PGV 100 G valves. I came home one night after work to find the backyard sprinklers operating on their own. The control box was set to off. I pulled the lid off the irrigation box and I could hear the water running through one of the valves. I shut off the water to the box. I don't know if it's the diaphragm or the solenoid that went bad. What to do next?
Most of the time when a valve won't shut off, it means there is something stuck in the valve, like a rock or debris, or some other problem with the diaphragm. At this point you will need to take the valve apart and flush it out if something is in there or replace the diaphragm. I do have a few videos on this you can find them in this play list

My zone 1 & 2 sprinklers have been struggling to pop up for years. I have to manually start them, stop, and quickly start them again to have them pop up. I'm just going to try replacing the dang solenoid at this point before calling a sprinkler tech. My x-core display shows no errors and the water pressure is full on the display.
Need to bring extra wire nuts and electrical tape and other items you might need to complete job and prevent additional trip and time.
Does it matter which wire connects to other wires?

When can you tell its going bad ?
Usually you will know it is bad when the valve does not come on or is not working form the controller. But you will also want to test the solenoid to make sure that it is the problem. There could be a cut wire or a bad splice, this could also be a cause of a valve not coming on. I do have a few videos on how to test a solenoid to see if it is good or not. Check those out. Hopefully this will help.
@@AmericanIrrigator what mine does it turns on but the pressure is low inspected the yard no leaks or dark green patches in yard cleaned all area to where grass could be stopping it tried again same thing low pressure you think might be faulty solenoids cause before worked awesome past few years but now its giving problems water pressure

I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that. In this case, it does not matter which wire coming out of the solenoid you use. As long as one goes to the common and one to the power, it is good. That is why the wires coming out of the solenoid are the same color, in this case two red wires. So when. replacing one, simply connect on to the common ( or ground) wire and then one to the power wire the old one was connected to. Hope this explains it a little better.

so you connected the new solenoid wires to the existing cables, did you not have to shut off the power to these wires first? You touched and twisted those wires with your barred hands. How were you able to avoid getting a jolt of electricity? Did you miss that part of the video on purpose?

What about it you replaced and not working either?
It could be that a wire is cut somewhere between that valve and the controller. If it is spliced before that valve in another valve box that splice could be bad too. Make sure the valve does work manually.
