This was super helpful, however, like at least one other Commenter, the top & bottom tube description in your video was opposite for me. I have a 2007 StarCraft. Based on the ‘2660 Series Crank-Up Lift System’ one-page instructions from Goshen, the end of the cable goes into the top tube and the top set of pusher springs get pushed towards the rear pulley (operating the back lift). The cable then heads around the pulley & into the lower tube towards the winch and pushes the bottom set of pusher springs towards the front (operating the front lift).
That my friend was extremely extremely helpful. I just purchased my 2003 Jayco Qwest yesterday and upon purchasing it from the buyer who was just looking to get rid of it for $400 he tried to raise it up and the cable snapped on him so now I have the task of doing exactly what you did and you made it seem so very simple for a DIY ER like myself. One possible improvement: I taped an end of a 2mm paracord to the end of the steel cable (about 17:15 into the video). When I pulled the cable, I pulled the cord and then taped it to the new cable. That way it was super easy to thread it through the pipe.

Great video. A real positive impact to the web. One note. I have a 2008 Rockwell and the tubes are the opposite way. The larger tube is on top for the rear springs and the bottom tube is for the small. Had to unbolt the front screws holding the springs into the sidewall and loosen all the screws at the front of the tube so I could get a small screwdriver in there to get the cable through the front housing. Took an hour plus and I know have to hook up to the winch to see if it works. If it doesn't it's landfill. Of another note. I'm in Vancouver BC Canada an NO ONE will fix tent trailers. UPDATE: The cable replacement works. Next up replace winch and motor. Thanks John for this amazing video

Thank You Thank You Thank You. I had the cable break on my 2000 Flagstaff and this video was my resource guide to replacing it. In the process I replaced the front and rear springs and master tube. Just an FYI for those in the USA, I ordered directly from Goshen and saved 25 to 40 percent on each piece opposed from buying from a distributor. Thank you again for making this video and helping this process be almost impossible to screw up.
I am in agreement with other comments, best description of the replacement I have found and so glad I found it. I've had a replacement cable for 2 years now but was unsure about doing this job even with the instructions from Goshen. My cable has been bolted together for 2 years but looks very frayed this season and I know the cable replacement has to be done. I just pulled the trailer out on the weekend and was getting my head around the replacement. I've seen several videos on how to replace this cable. But this is the most detailed video I have seen. Very good! I have a 2003 Viking with the Goshen system. My cable has not broken or even looks worn, but I want to replace it just to be on the safe side. I got the new cable from Goshen several months ago and I carry it with the necessary tools to replace it in the field should the need arise. You made it look so easy that I think I'll just go ahead and do it now before the camping season begins. The only concern for me is the upper and lower stop switch on my winch. It looked like you have a manual winch, but mine is electric and has stop or limit switches. They must be taken into consideration when attaching the new cable to the spool. I think what you have to do is run the winch in the down position until it hits the stop switch. Then attach the cable by first making three wraps around the winch take-up spool before anchoring it to the anchor clip on the side. I have not done this yet, but I'm pretty sure that's what the directions say to do. I'm 73 years old, but your video has given me the courage to get under there and do mine very soon. Also, don't forget to use plenty of grease on the cable and springs before installation.
John, We wanted to say THANK YOU so much for your video as it gave us the courage to open our system to take a look at what might be happening as our left rear lift was not lowering. Come to find out the spring was fine, but in the revamp we put a screw through the post stopping one of the tubes from lowering. Your video was the key to our fix. Thanks!
Okay, you saved my life. Well, nearly. This video is exactly what I needed. I got a 1997 Rockwood with the cable broken for a great deal. Ordered the parts from Goshen ($61 for cable, pulley, and shipping), and then found your video. Perfect! Took me about 2 hours. The hardest part was getting the cable clamped on the winch. What a pain! The only part that tricked me a little is that my front and rear springs are opposite; smaller hole on top and bigger on bottom. Thank you!

I bought a 1994 Palamino Stallion pop up camper. Brought it home to show my family, and it broke. Just like yours it broke at the winch. I went to our local camper dealer. He drew great pictures on how it went together, but not the stops (I love pictures and videos). He assured me I could do it. He also told me, if he did it, it would be about $80 for the cable and about $300 labor. I will do this myself. THANK YOU!
Super helpful video! I was able to perform this repair at the campground with the roof raised (and supported) as the cable snapped after I had the fail-safe brackets in place. However my top/bottom channels we opposite yours for front/back operation so pay attention to that for anyone making this repair. Thank you so much for the video!

I went out to set her up this morning and about thirty seconds after I got it raised I heard a loud pop and a crash. I ran out of the garage and the top had fallen. Thank goodness nobody was inside. The cable had snapped. After some looking around I stumbled upon this video. Thank you so much!!! After watching this I ran to the Lowe's home improvement store for parts. About two hours and $12 later she is good to go!!!
I know it has been a while since this comment but I wanted to suggest looking into the safety supports. I too have a 91 Palomino (yearling) and it came from the factory with them. They are easy to find on the pop up parts online stores if you don't have them already.
I called camping world and asked how much to replace the cable. They told me 700-1500$ . Yeah no thanks luckily this design has a manageable cable system not the gear box that fails in others. Good video.

Starcraft 2106 uses the identical Goshen system. Two years ago, my winch went out, so I ordered a new one from Goshen. My camper is a 2008 and I was unsure if the cable had ever been changed. I have heard of cables busting at campgrounds leaving people stranded and at the mercy of the nearest dealer, so I decided to order a new cable and put it on the same time I put on the winch. This was a very confusing job for me. First, I was alone w/o help. Second, the temp was 90' and high humidity which meant to asphalt was super-hot. Laying on a moving blanket did help! Thirdly, laying on the ground and looking up and trying to figure out how those giant springs did their job was mind boggling. Had I not watched this video, the camper may have gone to the scrap yard! I did get it done and even went camping that night. This Goshen system is really pretty simple, especially when compared to some other pop ups that have gears, pullies, eye bolts as well as being laced through the inside of the camper. Imagine having to open and or take out cabinets inside the camper to fix it! Something to think about for new campers trying to pick a brand. Bravo Zulu to you Mr. DIY Maniac. This was a great video, very well done and thorough. It made my day on that hot asphalt so much easier. Thank you very much.
I used this for my 2004 Rockwood Camper and this was an awesome, informative guide. There were a couple tiny differences, the largest of which was that the rig is "upside down" on the 2004 Rockwood. The lead wire returning to the crank, and the forward "push springs" are along the bottom channel instead of the top. Thanks!
HUGE thank you for this video! Helped repair my 1993 Skamper 17c. The only difference was that the "main tube" is upside down compared to yours. Taking apart was cake, took me longer to jack it up and secure it than pulling it apart did! The hardest part was finding a local place that sold stainless steel wire rope sleeves. Had to travel an hour to pick them up, couldn't believe it! Checked 10 local stores and all they had was aluminum ones which should NOT be used. Also, measure your cable first and go to Home Depot and have them cut the custom length vs buying it pre-packaged. Mine was $8 vs $20 buy doing that....though I first bought the pre-packaged and couldn't make a clean cut at first, so I have plenty of cable now, haha. Additional tip for others.... don't buy the "cable cutters" from Habor Freight, they aren't made for wire rope won't cut cleanly, which is needed to pass through the sleeve. Home Depot sells small handled wire rope cutters in the wire rope aisle that makes a clean cut. Besides tracking down all the parts and tools, the worst part was securing it to the crank system because mine is INSIDE the camper so I had to crawl in and wedge myself inside cabinets to get to it....not comfy.

We just bought a 99 Rockwood Freedom and after 2 months of trying to figure out why we were having some much trouble raising the roof - my brother watched this video and immediately knew how to fix the problem!!! Now its fixed and ready for camping!!!

Hey John, I just got response from a mobile repair guy to fix my main cable for my pop-up. He's charging me $600 for the job, including "materials and labor". I could save me $600 if I can do this myself for my 1996 Rockwood pop-up 🤔

For those looking into this, I just finished it on a 1993 Palomino yearling and the main bar underneath was upside down from this video, so everything he did on top had to be done on the bottom and vice versa. I t was driving me nuts until I realized this.....I was not paying attention when I took it apart so it is totally my fault,but still, heads up to anyone else about to do it......the top and bottom may not be the same as this guy's.
Followed all the instructions to realize that my Viking Epic 08 has the front springs mounted on the bottom so I had to feed my cable in the bottom section and finish installing with the top. Also, I highly recommend just dislodging the front springs so you can feed the cable through (no need to unscrew the side brackets) otherwise you may spend your entire day trying to feed your cable through!
Thanks for posting this. It was really helpful to see how the lift system works. Pretty sure it's the Goshen 1473 lift. They are still making the cables as I just asked them via email. I know the main tube has grease fittings, but should we be greasing the entire cable, and what about the cable that wraps around the crank, should we grease that to protect it from elements?
I don't believe the 98 Coleman pop-up my family had while I was growing up had this system. I can vividly remember the cables went up each of the telescoping posts and were anchored just below the roof.

I went out to set her up this morning and about thirty seconds after I got it raised I heard a loud pop and a crash. I ran out of the garage and the top had fallen. Thank goodness nobody was inside. The cable had snapped. After some looking around I stumbled upon this video. Thank you so much!!! After watching this I ran to the Lowe's home improvement store for parts. About two hours and $12 later she is good to go!!!
I know it has been a while since this comment but I wanted to suggest looking into the safety supports. I too have a 91 Palomino (yearling) and it came from the factory with them. They are easy to find on the pop up parts online stores if you don't have them already.
I called camping world and asked how much to replace the cable. They told me 700-1500$ . Yeah no thanks luckily this design has a manageable cable system not the gear box that fails in others. Good video.

Starcraft 2106 uses the identical Goshen system. Two years ago, my winch went out, so I ordered a new one from Goshen. My camper is a 2008 and I was unsure if the cable had ever been changed. I have heard of cables busting at campgrounds leaving people stranded and at the mercy of the nearest dealer, so I decided to order a new cable and put it on the same time I put on the winch. This was a very confusing job for me. First, I was alone w/o help. Second, the temp was 90' and high humidity which meant to asphalt was super-hot. Laying on a moving blanket did help! Thirdly, laying on the ground and looking up and trying to figure out how those giant springs did their job was mind boggling. Had I not watched this video, the camper may have gone to the scrap yard! I did get it done and even went camping that night.
This Goshen system is really pretty simple, especially when compared to some other pop ups that have gears, pullies, eye bolts as well as being laced through the inside of the camper. Imagine having to open and or take out cabinets inside the camper to fix it! Something to think about for new campers trying to pick a brand.

I used this for my 2004 Rockwood Camper and this was an awesome, informative guide. There were a couple tiny differences, the largest of which was that the rig is "upside down" on the 2004 Rockwood. The lead wire returning to the crank, and the forward "push springs" are along the bottom channel instead of the top. Thanks!

HUGE thank you for this video! Helped repair my 1993 Skamper 17c. The only difference was that the "main tube" is upside down compared to yours. Taking apart was cake, took me longer to jack it up and secure it than pulling it apart did! The hardest part was finding a local place that sold stainless steel wire rope sleeves. Had to travel an hour to pick them up, couldn't believe it! Checked 10 local stores and all they had was aluminum ones which should NOT be used. Also, measure your cable first and go to Home Depot and have them cut the custom length vs buying it pre-packaged. Mine was $8 vs $20 buy doing that....though I first bought the pre-packaged and couldn't make a clean cut at first, so I have plenty of cable now, haha. Additional tip for others.... don't buy the "cable cutters" from Habor Freight, they aren't made for wire rope won't cut cleanly, which is needed to pass through the sleeve. Home Depot sells small handled wire rope cutters in the wire rope aisle that makes a clean cut. Besides tracking down all the parts and tools, the worst part was securing it to the crank system because mine is INSIDE the camper so I had to crawl in and wedge myself inside cabinets to get to it....not comfy.

We just bought a 99 Rockwood Freedom and after 2 months of trying to figure out why we were having some much trouble raising the roof - my brother watched this video and immediately knew how to fix the problem!!! Now its fixed and ready for camping!!!

I really loved your "how to" video!!! I recently bought me a 7'x12' Rockwood pop-up camper (1996) with a broken cable. I really want to repair it myself. Anyhow, your video is by far the best I've seen. Great explanation and I loved how you handled the camera - other videos made me dizzy because the camera was moving too much. Although still nervous, you have inspired me to tackle this project on my own. Hopefully I'll come back and post my experience once I replace the broken lift cable. Hey John, I just got response from a mobile repair guy to fix my main cable for my pop-up. He's charging me $600 for the job, including "materials and labor". I could save me $600 if I can do this myself for my 1996 Rockwood pop-up 🤔

For those looking into this, I just finished it on a 1993 Palomino yearling and the main bar underneath was upside down from this video, so everything he did on top had to be done on the bottom and vice versa. I t was driving me nuts until I realized this.....I was not paying attention when I took it apart so it is totally my fault,but still, heads up to anyone else about to do it......the top and bottom may not be the same as this guy's.

Followed all the instructions to realize that my Viking Epic 08 has the front springs mounted on the bottom so I had to feed my cable in the bottom section and finish installing with the top. Also, I highly recommend just dislodging the front springs so you can feed the cable through (no need to unscrew the side brackets) otherwise you may spend your entire day trying to feed your cable through!

Thanks for posting this. It was really helpful to see how the lift system works. Pretty sure it's the Goshen 1473 lift. They are still making the cables as I just asked them via email. I know the main tube has grease fittings, but should we be greasing the entire cable, and what about the cable that wraps around the crank, should we grease that to protect it from elements?

I don't believe the 98 Coleman pop-up my family had while I was growing up had this system. I can vividly remember the cables went up each of the telescoping posts and were anchored just below the roof.
