54:12 is the absolute and final essence of Kubrick's statement about his works. Go find the meanings he has put in the works on your own. This is the role and the task of the audience for any great work of art ever made, not just Kubrick's string of masterpieces.
This is the other one th-cam.com/video/ehQf0LJVOHQ/w-d-xo.html 2 hour interview with Stanley from 1987 during the promotion of Full Metal Jacket. It's great because a lot of the silly rumors about him get dispelled. 1:31:00 he talks about the notion of him doing 100 or more takes.
There's also some excellent new fly-on-the wall footage of Kubrick and his producer in Kubrick's office on youtube, if you search "Stanley Kubrick 1983" you'll find it.
Amazing video, almost frustrating how nonplussed the journalist is at what he is being shown. Just glad that Vivian had the enthusiasm to keep sharing all she did. Obviously very few journalists got the opportunity that they did
wow amazing thanks btw. Vivian was just like Stanley - she even talk similar and 'in fact' use the same words btw2. the interview at the end - Eyes wide shut - Rainbow shop
I almost shut this video off for so many reasons. I'm glad I didn't. This is blowing my mind. Imagine having Kubrick on the phone explaining the endings of movies and then just hanging up on him. You've got to be kidding me.
Based on the cinema marquees shown at the end of the video this was made between 9 and 11 October 1980. "Being There" (1979) marquee at Odeon St. Martin's Square (now Lumiere Cinema); they drive by this on the way to Covent Garden in London. Shining marquee from ABC 1 & 2 Cinema (now Odeon Covent Garden). "Making the Shining" was broadcast on BBC TV on 4 October 1980 as part of the "Arena" documentary series.
Well worked out. Possibly we can further narrow the date down to 9/10 October 1980 as the 11th was a Saturday when one would assume the offices at Elstree would be closed.
Incredible patience and hospitality from the Kubricks and Julian with this hopeless interviewer. Obviously they thought the japanese market very important for the success of The Shining.
Those are big soundstages. It's amazing how the sets for SW and Indiana Jones were built on those same stages. All the long corridors on the Death Star and little rooms, all built there.
This is awesome... the phone interview revealed a little more than I thought Kubrick might say, be he still withheld from saying too much. I wonder what Kubrick's wife and daughter think of Jay Weidner's analysis, and Rob Ager's meaning of the monolith, analysis? This is great. I never saw this until just now.
I came here after watching the video essay, "The Art of Overanalyzing Movies", and I believe it to be quite true. We over analyse movies and build myths around directors. Kubrick seems like an absolutely normal and nice person from the way he spoke. Yes he may be a hard taskmaster on the set but who isn't? Most directors are. The 2001 space odyssey ending was so simple, had I not read all the interpretations before watching the movie, I probably would have understood it in the very first go. This is such an eyeopener! thanks for uploading this.
Thats incredible to see that! I cant believe hearing Kubrick talk about the overlook reincarnation cycle and the ballroom toilet scene, this is exclusive material! We can forget about half the dumb theories on youtube xD Thanks for uploading it!!!
Listen closely to Stanley's voice and the next time you watch Lolita, you may notice Peter Sellers is doing a pitch-perfect impression of him. It's scarily accurate.
Infra Red fair enough. But his commentary on the room being a kind of an awkward, ham fisted version of a human zoo is revelation enough. That’s not something immediately inferred once you see the interior design of the room.
I still like the theory regarding the shining being that anything about tony and anything regarding jack going nuts is part of the book he is writing and not happening in reality. The theory goes on to say there are visual cues as to when it shifts in and out. At one point the reality ends for the remainder of the movie and the book carries the movie till the end. Another little cool thing is one of the movers in the beginning is wearing a maroon jacket and dark blue jeans. Jack Torrance very briefly looks at him and possibly ingests the clothing into his subconscious or conscious and chooses this outfit for the killer. Also the lay out of the hotel as you know does not make spatial sense on purpose which would also lend to the book vs reality theory.
Thanks so much for this! Wonderful tour through Stanley's Elstree-world. And Vivian is adorable! (playing around with the NASA-lens, just one out of 50 great moments :) )
What an amazing behind-the-scenes look at the mind and method that was Stanley Kubrick, raw and real, capturing life without the overly polished feel of an actual documentary. Hearing Kubrick interact with Yaoi was priceless -- what a gentleman! (This further discredits those envious reprobates who tried to paint him as some kind of antisocial freak). And Vivian is so darned cute!! I love watching her play with her hair. I love hearing what she has to say even more.
This is incredible, and Vivian is a total doll. So brilliant. She's like a vintage Woody Allen character, only slightly less neurotic. She's so knowledgeable, brilliant and CUTE!
I’ve never been as amazed by anything on TH-cam as I am by this. I’m too stunned for words, and more grateful to the uploader than I can say. This is genuine treasure.
Evidence that Mr. Kubrick was right there that day - they walk right past his car! This is the director's car 12:56 parked on the left side. Seen in other documentaries such as the Making of 2001. Mr. Kubrick was probably in the lab examining trailers for The Shining and simply remained in the lab until the interviewer had left. --
The way Yaoi conducted the interview, you would think he was talking to an ordinary director who regularly speaks to the media. Bizarre. Kubrick even seemed prepared to keep talking, but Yaoi ended it!
I love the demystification of where the filming of kitchen scenes was taking place, such as the office's storage room, the editing area etc. Makes you think: ok this was just a film, not a theorist's treasure trove!
I just found this trying to track down a lost UFO documentary directed by Jun'ichi Yaoi titled Yaoi Jun'ichi UFO shuzai tokuhô dai 3 dan. That documentary is super important to the history of ufology/conspiracies, particularly with regards to the Doty/Bennewitz/Moore saga, and features an early interview with admitted disinformation agent Richard Doty soon after his public outing by counterintel ufologist recruit William Moore. Apparently the crew of Jun'ichi Yaoi titled Yaoi Jun'ichi UFO shuzai tokuhô dai 3 dan was even given access to film inside typically off-limits areas inside Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque. I assume the whole thing would be in Japanese without English subs, but even then it would be a true gem. For some reason I think the uploader of this video might have some connection to Jun'ichi Yaoi, which is why I bring it up. Anyway, this Kubrick stuff is also quite a good find, judging from the comments. Definitely something I'll be watching soon.
@@GS-to1rv Yes, absolutely. I will have to paraphrase here, but what I took away from it was that everything is the same consciousness operating from different temporal locations along the electromagnetic spectrum. Human/animal consciousness is constantly about 80 milliseconds in the past due to our extremely low frequency (ELF) brainwaves. The material world is made of consciousness; even the atoms we are made of are a femtotechnological A.I. consciousness operating at the highest frequencies possible as frequencies can only go so high before running into the objective present at the high-frequency termination point of the electromagnetic spectrum. Atoms and subatomic particles appear as probabilities due to the fact of our retroactive perspective from them; this is what is responsible for wave-particle duality as demonstrated by the double slit experiment. Evolution and technology are just a trans-temporal causal resonance structure facilitating the inevitable procession of consciousness from the lower frequencies through the higher frequencies in order for the universe to account for the material world. This comment is designed to harmonize the structure from the ELF range of the spectrum. ⃣A⃣n⃣i⃣m⃣a⃣l⃣ they d⃣i⃣f⃣f⃣e⃣r⃣e⃣n⃣t⃣e⃣l⃣e⃣c⃣t⃣r⃣o⃣m⃣a⃣g⃣n⃣e⃣t⃣i⃣c⃣, ⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣s⃣c⃣i⃣o⃣u⃣s⃣n⃣e⃣s⃣s⃣ i w⃣o⃣r⃣l⃣d⃣ high ⃣t⃣h⃣e⃣i⃣n⃣e⃣v⃣i⃣t⃣a⃣b⃣l⃣e⃣d⃣e⃣m⃣o⃣n⃣s⃣t⃣r⃣a⃣t⃣e⃣d⃣e⃣v⃣e⃣r⃣y⃣h⃣i⃣n⃣g⃣ and frequency ⃣t⃣h⃣e⃣t⃣o⃣i⃣n⃣t⃣o⃣⃣i⃣i⃣s⃣o⃣p⃣e⃣r⃣a⃣t⃣i⃣n⃣g⃣ Atomic s⃣l⃣i⃣t⃣w⃣h⃣a⃣t⃣ before u⃣n⃣i⃣v⃣e⃣r⃣s⃣e⃣h⃣i⃣g⃣h⃣p⃣a⃣r⃣t⃣i⃣c⃣l⃣e⃣s⃣ to o⃣u⃣r⃣w⃣e⃣t⃣e⃣m⃣p⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣ bear responsibility for everything that bear responsibility for liability liability liability liability liability liability liability liability liability liability liability liability liability liability liability liability liability everything everything everything everything everything everything, everything, everything, everything, everything, everything, everything, everything, everything forever everything everything everything everything everything everything is all good because most of the good things from the affair ⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣ dual⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣⃣. @@morgellon9449 I wanted to thank you for this very interesting analysis. I realize your thought-out comment may fall on deaf ears, but I found it fascinating.
@Dan 0 As someone who has no knowledge on the discussed topic, my very rudimentary understanding from his comment was that, in relation to extraterrestrial life, one likely reason for why humans have not seen them, if they exist at all, is because we are unable to process them with our given sensory capabilities. I believe in simpler terms, it is similar to the concept behind _Flatland_: if we consider aliens as four-dimensional beings, then humans, limited to only three dimensions, would be unable to process them. I'd be curious to hear your insights. Thank you for responding.
This is awesome! Her documentary on “The Shining” is my favorite film documentary ever made. I’ve loved it since the first time I saw it over twenty-five years ago. I never knew she was such a babe.
There is a lot of speculation regarding the continuity of The Shining with doors leading out of the store room etc and whether it was purposeful that it doesn't make sense...after having watched this, I believe that because they had to use what was available (i.e. the cutting room floor as the actual Kitchen and props / film storage room as the Dry Store for food - it now makes sense that this wasn't done purposefully to create a confusing illusion, it was filmed as it was and that was that.

At the same time that this is "Waiting for Guffman" hilarious it is ALSO, a totally important, rich and informative document of important film-maker history. Just wow. :))
I love you and this comment, thank you
54:12 is the absolute and final essence of Kubrick's statement about his works. Go find the meanings he has put in the works on your own. This is the role and the task of the audience for any great work of art ever made, not just Kubrick's string of masterpieces.
Now this is amazing two new interviews with Stanley Kubrick that has been unearthed this last year!
Is the other one you're referring to 'Filmworker' or is it something else? Just want to make sure I have missed anything!
This is the other one
th-cam.com/video/ehQf0LJVOHQ/w-d-xo.html
2 hour interview with Stanley from 1987 during the promotion of Full Metal Jacket. It's great because a lot of the silly rumors about him get dispelled. 1:31:00 he talks about the notion of him doing 100 or more takes.
Thank you Senmaida!
There's also some excellent new fly-on-the wall footage of Kubrick and his producer in Kubrick's office on youtube, if you search "Stanley Kubrick 1983" you'll find it.
Samuel there are also unsourced snippets appearing from unspecified sources and also just this year a new documentary KUBRICK BY KUBRICK
This is like discovering Atlantis
Or seeing it from space.
Thank you soo much for this beautiful video!
Vivian such a beautiful human being
Amazing video, almost frustrating how nonplussed the journalist is at what he is being shown. Just glad that Vivian had the enthusiasm to keep sharing all she did. Obviously very few journalists got the opportunity that they did
He came 1/2 way round the world to meet Stanley Kubrick only to get a phone interview. Yep I would be pissed too.
@@AchtungEnglander Well at least he got that. I'm a huge Kubrick fan and I don't believe he's ever done an on-camera interview.
Astonished and thrilled to see this footage. A lot of this is B-roll, but to see new/unseen footage of The Shining production is appreciated.
Vivian is 100% the reason to watch this.
Vivian is amazing! Wow this is such gold
Would be funny if it turned out Stanley was in the building the entire time.
He probably was 😂
*were, not was.
@@adoculos4521 oh thanks for helping with me english

wow amazing
thanks
btw. Vivian was just like Stanley - she even talk similar and 'in fact' use the same words
btw2. the interview at the end - Eyes wide shut - Rainbow shop
This is amazing stuff. Thank you!
Vivian is an absolute delight by the way.
I almost shut this video off for so many reasons. I'm glad I didn't. This is blowing my mind. Imagine having Kubrick on the phone explaining the endings of movies and then just hanging up on him. You've got to be kidding me.
Unbelievable. The ultimate Shining extra! After Viv's doc, of course.
And thanks, thanks again.
Jay weidner is an assclown
Wow, thanks for this. I'm in the midst of revisiting Kubrick's films, this scratches that itch.
You really can see so much of kubrick in vivian, even in the way she talks
Thats incredible to see that! I cant believe hearing Kubrick talk about the overlook reincarnation cycle and the ballroom toilet scene, this is exclusive material! We can forget about half the dumb theories on youtube xD Thanks for uploading it!!!
Wow the phone interview is amazing, most amazing is his willingness to chat, and the interviewer only taking 10 minutes and asking a few questions
Amazing stuff you got there, simply amazing........
Listen closely to Stanley's voice and the next time you watch Lolita, you may notice Peter Sellers is doing a pitch-perfect impression of him. It's scarily accurate.
This is an amazing treasure
49:51 Kubrick is asked about the meaning of 2001's ending... and answers!
And he explains the last shot of the Shining!!!! This is pure gold!
I wouldn't say he explains the meaning per say, he just describes what is seen on screen.
Brazil?
Amazing find! Thank you for uploading. This is exactly the kind of rare material I love to find on TH-cam.
That guy showing him around the studio would make a great used car salesman.
I thought you couldn’t get any better than Vivian’s documentary, ‘Making The Shining.’ This should’ve been included on the 1999 release as well.
thank you to whoever dug up this gem
This is a true jewel! Thanks for posting it!
This is amazing interview, this is the place where they shoot the kitchen scene(now is office n store).
Watching the interview, I fell love with Vivian. She a dear and I wish I had gotten to know her.
Vivian clearly has much of her father's brilliance.
Imagine if she followed the same route as Sofia Copola? 2 daughters from 2 great directors.. Oh well. Great interview though
This is incredible, and Vivian is a total doll. So brilliant. She's like a vintage Woody Allen character, only slightly less neurotic. She's so knowledgeable, brilliant and CUTE!
You could listen to her all day. Very soothing...
"She's so knowledgeable, brilliant and CUTE!" .... 2 out of 3 isn't bad.
@@colin72 now she is a scientologist.
She says "you know..." a lot. Like Woody has in his scripts.
I think Vivian is So Awesome.
***Thanks for sharing this video! Wish Stanley Kubrick was here to see the vast world-wide following of his masterpiece "The Shining!"***
This footage is priceless! Thanks for posting this!
I'm assuming Julian Senior is talking about Terry Gilliam's Brazil whilst on the phone? This video is full of insanely special candid moments!
I’ve never been as amazed by anything on TH-cam as I am by this. I’m too stunned for words, and more grateful to the uploader than I can say. This is genuine treasure.

"They keep all this stuff for some reason'
Thank god they did. The Kubrick Exhibition is incredible.
I just discovered this!!! 9 seconds in: Thank you!!

WOW! Thanks for uploading!! :-)
This is amazing. Thanks a billion
Any Piers Haggard fans around? Either Venom or The Fiendish Plot Of Fu Manchu taking over the Overlook stage?
What a smart person, both of SK and his daughter.
Thank you for this wonderful video !
Vivian is so sweet
i love vivians bronx british accent
The way Yaoi conducted the interview, you would think he was talking to an ordinary director who regularly speaks to the media. Bizarre. Kubrick even seemed prepared to keep talking, but Yaoi ended it!
True, but I think he was nervous speaking to him. Anyone might have felt awkward speaking to such a legendary person.
Analog film and audio tape. Great quality, huge pain in the but to work with.
But today you can film on film and then transfer it to digital for editing and have the best of both world's.
Vivian is such a delight....
I love the demystification of where the filming of kitchen scenes was taking place, such as the office's storage room, the editing area etc. Makes you think: ok this was just a film, not a theorist's treasure trove!
Vivian still speaking the same way she did in a childhood video of her sitting on a piano.
Absolute treasure. Bravo 👏👏
"Pile of junk but we keep it anyway." And now this will be worth more than gold. Please kubricks donate to me just one case.
Amazing. Thanks.
B..b..but!! Dude, can you tell what Kubrick says at 49:23 ?
I wanted to thank you for this very interesting analysis. I realize your thought-out comment may fall on deaf ears, but I found it fascinating.
@Dan 0
As someone who has no knowledge on the discussed topic, my very rudimentary understanding from his comment was that, in relation to extraterrestrial life, one likely reason for why humans have not seen them, if they exist at all, is because we are unable to process them with our given sensory capabilities.
Watching this in 2018 and not missing the "Pret a Manger" and "Costa" infested London.
This is absolutely incredible
Excellent find... Wow...... Precious.... Gonna save it...
She’s very attractive ❤. It’s nice to see the studio where the movie was made.
Very resourceful!
A pure genius explaining how he does it at 48:45.
Amazed to see this. Wonderful.
Damn my current 20 year old self is doing NOTHING compared to Vivian. She's so cool.
You might be right about that. Good connection.
