      Well, l have been in my new bungalow for just over a year now and now everything the wife wanted done in it is just about Finnished it's time to put my workshop up and as she keeps nagging me with " when are you going to get those ruddy boxes and machines out of the store room and bedroom and into your SHED", so now the base has been done it up up and away, l watch all the you tube videos of diy machine builds and go to sleep dreaming of what l will build first, because you know we need every thing we see others building, but this guy is on another level when it comes to a good pair of hands and a very cleaver mind , what an insperation he is, he shows you just what can be done with a welder chop saw and some metal.
      Keep EM coming mate.

    THANKS FOR A GREAT VIDEO. Here's a good tip for you...tap using CRISCO vegetable shortening. just dip the tap in and run the tap. You can also power-tap. The Crisco doesn't make the usual mess and hardly ever do you break threads!

      I'm not sure I completely understand your comment but if your trying to say he spent too much effort to build this machine rather than buy it you have to consider where he lives. Many countries don't have access to box stores or large tool chains they may have never seen a Habor Freight. I can't say for certain this is the case for this gentleman however I think it's likely, not to mention he does run a TH-cam channel and building this tool not only gave him a much needed piece of machinery but also some new content. I think building is really the only way for him to go that makes sense. If I misunderstood your comment then I apologize.

    Nice work. How are you going to square the rails/axis to each other? Also once you have it dialed in, you should drill a few dowel pin holes thru both the rail and plate to permanently keep them aligned. The play in the fasteners and friction cannot keep the location accurate when vibration and cutting loads start pushing on the rails.

    Amazing work, man!!! I'm sure your hands and arms were sore and tired by the time you had finished hand tapping all of those bolt holes, lol. As a Tech-Tip, use your drill press to do the hard work for you. Just chuck the tap into the drill chuck only half as tight as you would a drill bit. This will act as a clutch and allow the tap to slip inside the chuck so that you do not break the tap. It's alot faster and easier, plus the tap goes in straight every time. Lots of TH-cam videos on that power tapping technique 👌

    I love that there is more effort in this than the other "diy milling machine" where it's just a co-ordinate table on a drill press. I'll have to see in part 2 but I have a sad feeling that it is going to chatter like a bastard which comes down to materials, using welded together C channel is great but the reason they use big beefy castings is to mitigate flection which your hollow structure is going to have tonnes of unfortunately it just doesn't have the metal mass to retain it's rigidity under pressure. Also just mentioning it now but from what I've seen you're smart enough to know this already, for the love of god have a stationary chuck and quill on a drawbar because if you build it like a drill press with a sliding quill the whole project is pointless...also digital calipers for dro's again would be a great idea and give you a reliable constant scale.
    Just to be clear not hating on the project at all loved your lathe and love this too but understand anything you do on this will either have to be hand finished or have tolerances +/- 1mm which on a milling machine is huge and may lead to a whole load of tool breakage.

    • @cambridgemart2075
      @cambridgemart2075 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unfortunately you're right, the table alone on my mill weighs 350kg. Machine tools use dovetail ways with gibs to adjust the clearance because they are very tough and can be adjusted to have virtually no free play, the recirculating ball followers, whilst very smooth, are not as tough as a conventional way and are prone to contamination unless you can keep them scrupulously clean.
      Good effort though, it will definitely give him something to learn how best to build a mill and hecan tweak it as much as he wants.

    • @rogeriocosta1035
      @rogeriocosta1035 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right, it will not be a true milling machine. But he would probably use it for some hobby services, taking very light passes, for soft materials etc.

      @nauroticdax 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rogeriocosta1035 thats kinda what i was getting at, nothing wrong with that at all but it does mean ppe is a huge concern you dont wanna get an endmill to the face

      @@nauroticdax Oh, I did not think about safety, but you are right. It is a good advise.

    • @nauroticdax
      @nauroticdax 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rogeriocosta1035 not being funny with you here but people rarely do, which is what pisses me off so much about what I said initially taking a drill press putting a co-ordinate table on it and calling it a mill. People say you shouldn't because it damages the machine but in reality that chuck is press fit on a taper with a sharp end mill on it...and with side load the chuck is working its way off bit by bit.
      Not really concerned if it damages the machine but it's gonna really suck when a 3kg chuck spinning at upwards of 1000rpm plus tooling comes flying off at your hands, this is why I said if there is no drawbar on this project (i'm sure it will be) it is stupidly dangerous

    A construction site near my house has some big I beams laying around, I think i will ask them if the beams are going to recycling, this will be a great opportunity to build my own machine since they are very expensive in my country.
