What a dream it would be to ice skate like that. I'm taking ice skating lessons now and doing terrible. Sonia Henie was a genius on ice. Absolutely spectacular ice skater! So talented!
This is from the one and only Sonja Henie "color movie!" It's called, "It's A Pleasure," and it really is! Please check out the other 2 clips from the same movie: they're a delight! Thanks so much for your interest!
These old skaters are Still full of bitterness & resentment LOL. Sure hope they removed all the hate else they would find their final resting place in hell. Lol no reputable historian or biographer has ever romantically linked Hitler to Henie. Wishful thinking of evil warped minds. What a powerful drug jealousy & hatred are these old goats were still hating long after Henie's demise. They're probably all dead. Not buying the myth of Henie's vulgarity. She was from "old European money." Her family had been furriers to the Norwegian crown. I'm certain Sonja had lessons in etiquette like most old monied wealth. Skating people sure are jealous when they hate they hate beyond the grave! Pathetic. Typically low of the U.S media to join in the hate-fest. Tonya Harding would be a terrible choice to play Henie. Get a real actress and keep it real. Clearly that was an example of another media reported lie.
Amazing. Sonja was winning Gold Medals in the Olympics over 100 years ago. She advanced the world of figure skating. She was not a nice person but she could skate!
To be honest, I really feel sorry for her. Besides skating she really didn't have a life. First her father control her in her trainings, them going to the USA, getting her involved in movies and shows, etc. After he die, it was worst for her. Her mother was 24/7 behind her, even disapprove her marriage, etc. Skating was the only time when she feel herself. Sad. She was a beautiful and charming lady.
We're in the same boat...or pond! At one point I was really good; could jump over barrells, etc. Then one day my father, while trying to save our drowning dog, fell in up to his chest! Both were saved, but I didn't even try skating again for about 20 years.
Thanks M! Back before the flood, I remember watching this and everything else on our TV in BandW! Couldn't afford color then! Also, Marie, "The Body," MacDonald had the best hair-styles, lotsa rats, and snoods; all cool '40s things. I read somewhere that she was married 8 times! She's really a snake in this movie! Gracias!
Sonja looks so beautiful.....As a child, I always loved to watch her skate, and still do....I'm so glad you posted these clips.....so much that I am going to "steal" them and put them on DVD so I can watch them on my TV....I hope you don't mind.....thanks for sharing them with us!!!.... And, by the way.....Marie MacDonald had some BIG hair in this movie, didn't she???....lolololol
I remember Marie MacDonald from one of Cesar's movies called "Once a Thief"....it was made around 1950.....Cesar played a real cad....co stars were June Havoc, Lon Chaney Jr, and Marie....She was rather "chesty".....I also read that she was once married to Harry Karl....Debbie Reynold's ex......8 times...wow....she had Liz Taylor beat!!!...lol
@grapevinelane A bit younger than your Mom. I was born 1949. Never saw her live, but did enjoy the movies and the video's of her skating. I love Ice skating, just wish I had 1/8 th the talent that Sonja had. Maybe I would not have spent so much time on my rear end !!!!
Henie's, extensions were better than Hamill's. Her speed & spins were better than Hamill's & all the skaters of today. Even by today's stanard's Henie's dance elements are very strong. She's magnificent on the floor dancing with Cesar Romero & others. Something the skaters of today can't hold a candle to at all. You can bet her figures were strong too. Sorry, but no way Hamil or any other skater of today matched Henie's success nor has any other skater made as big of a skating impact none have matched her forget about surpassing her. If others call themselves the "queen of skating" than Sonja Henie is "the empress of skating". Her appeal was really global---unlike all the rest. There's never been another figure skater as successful. Her career achievements as both Olympian & as a pro entertainer equal the gold standard. None have matched none have surpassed her. Maybe someone will do it 70 years from now. Truth is every career looks like a flop compared to Henie's. The only thing she failed to do was "do for skating what Astaire did for dance." This goal she did not achieve. She brought figure skating to film. Yet, Astaire, innovated dance on film, combining special effects to dance creating a new visual spectacle. He visually brought out all the possibilities of combining dance w/film using innovative camera angles & techniques. He enhanced dance & innovated movement using film. Henie's attempt film innovations to skating were in costuming & set designs. But the skating stayed inside the box. Henie was unable to use film to bring imagination & visual firepower to skating as Astaire succeeded in doing with dance. Maybe they should've worked together. The frontier of combining skating with film is still open waiting for a genius to light the path blazed by Henie. The skater need not be American but being a "global "star"is a must.
Hi JJ truth! Just wanted to say hello and thank you for both your comments on lovely Sonja! I'm new to Google+ and I'm having a hard time figuring out where my e-mails are going! And to think, I used to be such a quick-study! No more! It'll all work out eventually. In the interim, please forgive the delayed reply. Also, please view some other goodies I've uploaded from charming Sonja!

Sonja Henie had real CLASS & style something you can't teach. Something today's skater's can only dream about.

You may THINK you have a cool night spot but does YOUR club have a mini ice rink in front of the stage?
Wow, I can understand why. Glad both dog and your Father were saved. How scary that must have been for a young boy.

+JJ truth If only you could learn to worship the Lord as much as you do professional skaters.
She was good in her day but skaters now are much more athletic.
