I saw her in the 40's and even have a souvenir ... a teen pair of skates with her name etched in the blade! Unfortunately, I can't remember her performance ... it was my one and only Ice Capades ever.
wow look at all those tricks she’s doing on uneven ice field and skates with not so great support. it’s amazing what they could achieve with what they had at the time
If Sonya were young and skating today there is every indication should could be doing what is needed today. She was a superb athlete who kept in shape, gave great attention to detail, and evidenced terrific stamina. She pioneered traveling ice shows and became a leading film star though she could barely act. I wouldn't figure on Sonya in any setting settling for anything less than the best.
Uh, her success was MAINLY to the fact that she was an Olympic Champion three times in a row, 1928, 1932 and 1936! Hollywood came knocking as a result of her success as the world's greatest figure skater.
@waynebrasler ITA. Sonja was a gifted athlete. With today's equipment, and training I am 100% Sonja would have easily matched her record. She had a God given talent.
Wish we had the end scene its terrific Sonia was a great skater years ago ok we are more sophisticated but Sonia made skating popular and for that I am forever thankful.
I am so sure Tonya Harding could have played her in a move about Sonja Henie back in her skating days. They were both, VERY powerful skaters & jumpers!!! Even Tonya looked like her too! God if only. Would had been a great movie.
Dorothy Hamill or Tara Lipinski would have been better choices. Hamill essentially did Sonja's routines and even topped her scratch spin, (a near impossible feat,) and Lipinski looked closer to her.
I Love her, she's so fancy yet cute x') I just know her today, she's entertain me alot because of the fancy-ness and her spins whoa, I think it's better than some skaters nowadays :'') Thanks to her
@Chutson353 I noticed that too!!!! Sonja FLIES across the ice! Her spins have tremendous speed too! And I had no idea she could do a double jump. I thought only Cecilia Colledge did one.
I can't help but wonder what would happen if this same crowd saw someone like Mao Asada or Yuna Kim skate? The crowd was excited when she did a loop single jump and a waltz jump. But how would they react to an olympic skater who does the single jump, but as a triple?Or when they see Mao Asadas triple axel? Also the spins where not as hard and Sonja wasn't as flexible as Julia Lipinskia,Sonja didn't have the artistic talent of Yuna kim.But the crowd clearly loves her! I can't imagine what the crowd would do if they watched any of those skaters.
hannah steele It is surprising what passed for greatness back then. Yes, Henie was state of the art, and a world and Olympic champion, but it begs the question, what were the losers like? Aside from her spins, there was no great technique. I find the same thing in ballet (I teach classical ballet). They trained for years back then, as today, but you could teach/learn what they did in a very short period of time. What did they spend their training time doing? Compulsory figures were difficult and strictly judged, but the free skating was, well, not very difficult.
If Henie had been born 90 years later, she would no doubt be doing triple axels today. Comparing her flexibility and artistic talent to skaters of another era, is absurd. Just as comparing Johnny Unitas to Tom Brady is absurd.
Indian Outlaw amén to that! Sonja was the top of the to from her era. And as you said if she was a skater nowadays she would be doing all triples. What happens is that the way of training back then was different. And all the sports change throughout the years
@smellab1000 Women had only just begun to jump-they had been discouraged because jumps were not considered 'feminine'. It was a different sport then, different equipment.
You can tell she could have done much more difficult tricks and jumps lol. Looks like she did a single axe.. when she probably could have nailed a triple let alone a double lol but.. she was ahead of her time as it was it seemed.
@pelicanus11 Although I'm new to ice skating (been skating for year), I think she was a really good skater. Sure, she's not doing triples, but she's definitely showing very good skating qualities, and is a joy to watch. :)
@@keti.rg.editzzz No kidding. It's interesting to see how the techniques and stuff have evolved over the decades. I just hope that I can get back onto the ice this fall. Stupid COVID shut my rink down until at least August.
wow!! she really was amazing!! the sports have progressed so much since! these days, ladies like Mao Asada are landing triple axels! but i do think she was one of the few people who turned figure skating in to a sport!!
Yes, but so were USA and Soviet before they were attacked, no repercussions afterwards because they won. The nazi machine was helped by american oil and money from grandfather Bush [who might'we been a german immigrant altogether]. Hitler even paraded on TIME magazine some years prior, but few could foresee the immense atrocities. Stalin and Mao was worse and hunted jews [USSR], gays and minorities, but it is not as politically correct to portray.
I read that in a bio of her by a ex skater friend of hers. She was NOT a nice person and terrible to her Mother. The Norwegians took a long time to forgive her after the war.She also supported the US troops as she had become an American citizen.
The way the audience was applauding this performance, they probably will fall over with a heart attack watching todays skaters perform. lolololololololol!!!!!!! Ok!! it was a joke but you old timers know it's the truth.
I think there were better skaters just Google Cecilia Colledge, she invented the layback spin, and the camel spin as well as being the first female skater to do a double jump. There was also another beautiful skater named Belita Turner, to me at least, when I watch Sonja like here, and then watch a video of Belita there is just no comparison. I think Belita’s skating skills were far more graceful and beautiful than Sonja’s even though she never got the acclaim, or notoriety Sonja did. Anyway, that is just how I feel sorry if it offends anyone.
A clever skater, but she had none of the style and grace of Belita. Her success was mainly due to the publicity generated by these films - we don't know now who else was skating at that time.
Actually, her success was due to her amazing accomplishments as a figure skater, not to her films. The best Belita did was place 16th in the 1936 Olympics. Henie won gold in 1928, 1932 and 1936. She won *10* World Championships between 1927 and 1936, the first at age 14! She won numerous Norwegian and European competitions. To this day Henie is one of the most successful and admired figure skaters in history. You should look her up. There really is no comparison between the two of them.
@calexander007 And you sound like an arrogant old timer who don't and won't accept progress as it happens before your very eyes. And it's not only with skating your generation is this way. When you have skaters like a Yuna Kim or Mao Asada. A Sasha Cohen or a Mirai Nagasu who are routinely doing triple jumps and neck breaking spends in very complicated positions, then you have to laugh at how people applauded the simplicity of how Sonja Henie skated. Even she would be in awe!!

Насколько точьно красиво
A talented beauty in our midst.
I’m the enamored man in the audience! Only I’m enamored by her from TH-cam 87 years later! A very pretty and talented woman!
Uh, her success was MAINLY to the fact that she was an Olympic Champion three times in a row, 1928, 1932 and 1936! Hollywood came knocking as a result of her success as the world's greatest figure skater.
Has anyone noticed she appeared to do a reverse lutz at 1:06

Эта чемпионка снималась в фильме Серенада солнечной долины. Какая в фильме музыка, какой незабываемый фильм
that man is GORGEOUS
She is amazing❤️

I do agree way ahead of her times. Amazing girl she worked very hard. She had just a loving papa. I admire strong fathers much respect. Love you Sonja
87 years ago, well she did her very best. She was as good as Surya, Debbie, Vanessa and Starr when they were very young children. 😊
@Chutson353 I noticed that too!!!! Sonja FLIES across the ice! Her spins have tremendous speed too! And I had no idea she could do a double jump. I thought only Cecilia Colledge did one.
if we were in 1936, i would be an olympic figure skater.
If you were in 1936, techniques and skates would only allow you to do what she did (at best)
Yeah
Those bent legs would never be allowed now. Her spinning speed was amazing, though.
Everyone thinks that now😂
Fortunatly, we have Obersdorf to copycat her.
So sweetie and graceful. I wonder what she would think of figure skating now. It’s an extreme sport.
omg that dress is amazing - i wonder where i could find one just like it!!!
afterall we're very lucky to live in this era because we witness skaters like Kim Yuna, Mao Asada and other amazing skaters out there :)))
Don Ameche watching in amazement
Красиво. Не хватает прыжков а так все великолепно.
corny movie but a great skater. she paved the way for a lot of future ice stars
@cbarragan9 Don't forget that figures were over half the score back then. (Also, this isn't a competitive performance)
I can't help but wonder what would happen if this same crowd saw someone like Mao Asada or Yuna Kim skate? That could be said about any sport, any athlete, any dancer, etc., when comparing then to now.

Wow, i couldve been a champion if i lived back then :)
1936.. When all it took was a couple singles to win the olympics.
Well, that and FIGURES, as in Figure Skating!
my trainer would kill me after such a waltzjump >.
That's what they called figure skating then?
God, she wouldn't even have made the nationals with a routine like that.
Not only that, she wouldn't have even made regional finals.
sad but true...its quite pedestrian compared to modern figure skaters.
The same is true of any sport.

@sk8victorious But not as good as Sonja Henie. :D

😂🤣😅

一回転程度(もしかしたら一回転じゃない)やバランスを取ってるだけで歓声が起こるって(笑)。
Just a waltz jump so many people clapping???? I hope figure skating these days be like that
Oh lol, now I'm the last newbuy in my ice-rink, but in 1936 I could be the best skater in the world XD

And now you are 11 years older! Tick tock tick tock, watch that biological clock! The “wall” comes fast for women!
Good skating but with none of the balletic grace of Belita
I bet there were far better figure skaters back then. I cannot possibly believe there were such a primitive skills in figure skating.
That's a really stupid comment! She was the best! Women weren't doing double and triple jumps in the 30s!!!

She was a legend before Hollywood.
I prefer the balletic style which was introduced by Belita and brought to perfection by John Curry
