Coolest find and O/H. I was apprenticing at a Ford dealer under an old timer that used wire wheels to do what we called "the farm overhaul" you guys did. He did a 351 W one day and used the wire wheel cleaner for piston tops, etc. That car came back on a hook a few days after it left. A wire from the wire wheel went into the engine, had jammed the oil pump and the engine burned up from lack of lube. Figure out the moral of this story by yourself. Thanks for showing the vid. Yeah pulling the engine and stripping it is much easier and effective than what I'm doing here. I would do it, however the car is stuck in storage and I can't get a engine hoist to it. Also if i ever pull this engine... it'll most likely never go back it the car 😂 would swap in a roller 5.0 and 5spd. Slap a intake and carb on it and call'er a day!

Hi guys, outstanding piece of engineering on that 64 mustang I had a cupe model of those and every dayI regret the day that I sold it, do to my back ground in the mechanical field it was on an outstanding conditions, when I saw you guys playing with that toy it gave me the wild desire to be there with you guys having the time of our life with it fixing it back to his original condicions, most kind of you guys for your documentary so well put together and everyone that one way or another collaborated to make it possible congratulations, enjoy make the best of it, please keep up the good work.
That carbon buildup on the pistons is from leaded fuel. You did the right thing by cleaning it off. That stuff is like gravel in the cylinders when it breaks loose and gets between the piston and cylinder wall. Be sure to oil those cylinders good before startup and fresh oil and filter will help to ensure a long life.
In 1975, these were common cars. No one was hoarding them to restore. Remember they made somewhere around 100K fastbacks 65-66. Kids had them as high school hot rods. This one was abused and headed for the scrapper. I can't believe it actually escaped the junk yard.
When I seen the air ratchet and the thread cleaner or tap I almost had a coronary lol. Didn’t realize air wasn’t hooked up hahah. Nice vid bro. Enjoy yourself.
I do admire the spirit you guys have in getting it running, But you gonna need to gut that interior. With that mouse nest on the passenger side, you can bet there is more in the headliner, seats, dash. No stink now that it is not out in the sun and winter. But get warmed up and it will stink like mouse piss. Looks like a great start. PS disconnect your blower motor, this way you won't get a dose hantavirus when you are in the driver seat trying to get it to fire off eh!
I had a mouse crawl in and make nest beside my cabin filter in the winter I didn't know about. Spring came, was always kinda tired, fluish, aches, chronic cough. Didn't think about too it much, just a cold. Doing the spring maintenance on my car, I pulled the cabin filter and the little bastard died on it, and the pleats were filled with turds and piss, and this big ass nest all around the rest. Without a host the virus can stay active for a week. There might be none in there now but all that nice bedding material. Took 14 months for my lungs to clear. It was no fun, hospital stay, loss of income, just blah, never want it again
Also, since the mice have been there and their urine has been all over, the chance of tetanus is high if you cut yourself. Everything soft will have to be thrown away. Don't save any door panels, soft trim, carpet (obviously), or seat padding. It will carry that smell for far too long.
Looking forward to seeing her move under her own power, provided the C4 isn’t toast. Expect the steering and suspension to be totally shot as well. The steering wheel may go a full 10 to 2 without even moving the front wheels. Best of luck, I learned to drive in one, a metallic dark green ‘66. Oh and subbed
Won't be moving for another 2-3 months unfortunately... I hate winter😡 yeah not sure if I'm going to try and make the c4 work or just swap in a 5spd, still undecided at this point. Yeah not to worried about suspension, I've done it before on my coupe. Will only take a day to replace everything, setting up the camber, caster and toe in is what takes the most time.
classicmustangs429 Get her running and drop it R and D, tyranny’s already bolted up, you never know! 😀 Oh and the brakes lol. May want to make sure they’re in working order. 😁
One more thing, I couldn’t tell if you kept track of the pushrods, they really need to go back where they came from, roll ‘em on a flat piece of glass to make sure that they’re straight. Ok I’m out
Nice! Looking forward to the series. My dad bought a 65 fastback new down here in Houston and drove it until coincidentally, about 1976 or so, when the oil pump went out. He sold it to a kid at the service station by his job for $250. :( It was the first car I ever "worked" on, lol! But I did keep it cleaned and washed for him as well as a 7-11 yr old could. I'd love to find one of my own someday. Congrats and good luck on it!
@@Theoldcarchannel. I wish it was! I think the last license plate was LAG 996 and it had the metallic blue interior, 289, auto, fold down rear seat, and below the dash AC. The body and interior were in pretty good shape, but the trans slipped and the ac and radio didn't work, so the engine failure was the last straw. I was not happy since I really enjoyed that car!
I had a '65 notch. 289 3 speed on the floor. Sold it for $175 in 1978. Have you ever noticed that 64-66 (nice ones) share a uniquely Mustang interior smell?
I like that you’re doing the work yourself but it’s crazy that you should’ve put new lifters new pushrods and at the very least get the cylinder heads Resurface and check all the valves. I mean after all you’re talking about a car that hasn’t ran in 44 years

Seafoam and MMO helped me revive a 85 F250 with a 351W that had been sitting for years. Its good stuff! :D
mansharker8 .I use BerryMans ChemTool B12 which has Toulene In it which cleans better than SeaFoam... Seaform has Petroleum Distillates In it whichis oil products...Give B12 a try...IMHO
I love those resurrection videos! If i could i´d save ´em all!
I wish mine was as rust free as this
That carbon buildup on the pistons is from leaded fuel. You did the right thing by cleaning it off. That stuff is like gravel in the cylinders when it breaks loose and gets between the piston and cylinder wall. Be sure to oil those cylinders good before startup and fresh oil and filter will help to ensure a long life.
it deserves a full blown restoration
Sure... just not from me anytime soon😅
In 1975, these were common cars. No one was hoarding them to restore. Remember they made somewhere around 100K fastbacks 65-66. Kids had them as high school hot rods. This one was abused and headed for the scrapper. I can't believe it actually escaped the junk yard.
that car needs a metalic black paintjob nd new wheels to be John Wick's babe
I love the video documentation of this project. Great work!
personally, I prefer the 67s, however this is still a nice looking car
Just picked up a 68 today actually😎 j code fastback deluxe interior👍
classicmustangs429 neat
Great sharing and detailed ,guys you are rocking all the very best
Great video!
Thanks Zach! Next one should be even better! Vroom vroom😉😎!
When I seen the air ratchet and the thread cleaner or tap I almost had a coronary lol. Didn’t realize air wasn’t hooked up hahah. Nice vid bro. Enjoy yourself.
🤣Haha all I had at the moment and it still did it's job😂 thank you
I do admire the spirit you guys have in getting it running, But you gonna need to gut that interior.
Thank You, let's get it running first lol😂 then I'll worry about the interior👍
Can't agree more.. Just bought a car that was a rodent motel. The entire interior has to come it. It stinks so bad and there is💩💩 all in dash 😞
@@ClassicRideSociety this once actually doesn't smell like that at all... I will be take the mouse nest and carpet out of it shortly though
Reminds me of my old mustang too. I had a 67 mustang converatable . And a boss mustang too. I thought that your rebuild techniques very good.
Thanks for the support! Stay tuned😎
classicmustangs429 Get her running and drop it R and D, tyranny’s already bolted up, you never know! 😀
Oh and the brakes lol. May want to make sure they’re in working order. 😁
@@SteverRob 😂😂 yes most definitely want to make sure those work... Wouldn't want to hit the 71 cobra Torino in front of it😅
One more thing, I couldn’t tell if you kept track of the pushrods, they really need to go back where they came from, roll ‘em on a flat piece of glass to make sure that they’re straight. Ok I’m out
This would be such a fun car to restore. Easy to work on and a gazillion aftermarket parts.
Piston crusties = leaded gas
Leaded gas has nothing to do with carbon that from running rich and oil
@@MonzaRacer that shit was gray gray=lead
@David Bryant fact. You obviously never worked on this stuff when leaded fuel was in use
@David Bryant yeah I assumed your mother was tight... but she had to be left handed...left loosie
That's crazy! Who knows might be the same car lol! What was his car all about? 289 car? Colour? Interior?
@@Theoldcarchannel. I wish it was! I think the last license plate was LAG 996 and it had the metallic blue interior, 289, auto, fold down rear seat, and below the dash AC. The body and interior were in pretty good shape, but the trans slipped and the ac and radio didn't work, so the engine failure was the last straw. I was not happy since I really enjoyed that car!
Looks like you might want to do freeze plugs.
Im currently leaning against my truck next to this car. You have another sub man. Good work!!
Hahaha amazing, I’ll be out in a bit if you’re still around! Appreciate the support
good memory lane did a few in my time
I had a '65 notch. 289 3 speed on the floor. Sold it for $175 in 1978. Have you ever noticed that 64-66 (nice ones) share a uniquely Mustang interior smell?
Thats a way nice car. I love it.
Thank you, should be a fun summer time cruiser!😎
65 and 66 mustang fastbacks are easily the coolest looking mustangs EVER!!!
Thanks Jerry, I'm a lover for the 69-70 but the 65-66 get my blood flowing
cmon part 2 we waitin, got a new sub!
I wish I had a father to teach me this. Awesome work
I like that you’re doing the work yourself but it’s crazy that you should’ve put new lifters new pushrods and at the very least get the cylinder heads Resurface and check all the valves. I mean after all you’re talking about a car that hasn’t ran in 44 years
That's a cool outro. With a lot of time and money that could be a super nice Mustang.
satisfaction is real
RIGHT!? That before and after!
Not so bad. Looks like it was stored indoors. Good save!
I like rebuilding cars but everything Depends on money
Yup, this is just a clean up what I can and see if it will run. If it does, great! If not I have a plan B👍
I am planning to rebuild one of these but yes everything rely on money
@@RamonNunezRey cjpony parts for cosmetics Advance / O'Reilly auto parts is who I used to bring mine back into shape
And you fall in love with the cars and you don’t want to sell them to make money lol
@@thesorrow619 have had mine since 1973 getting ready to sell it soon
West Texas Tejano, here. Dirt Dauber is the name of the wasp you are thinking of, methinks.
They clog a lot of exhausts of junkyard vehicles around here!
Good to know! Jezz they're a pain in the ass!
That is a beautiful car I love mustangs
Thank you👍
You would save yourself a LOT of headache if you would get an "endoscope" for your android/iphone. They run about 60 bucks and will go down ANY head bolt hole and show you what is in the bottom. They have their own lighting. You can also send them down ports and check for cracks and look into the crank.
I'm just sending it! If something fails... I have a plan B😎🤘
Dont forget the water pump and all of the rubber hoses (coolant, fuel, brakes).
And the frost plugs look a little sketchy, too.
Next episode 😉
@@Theoldcarchannel. cool.
Oh shit a Fastback? That’s badass
You bet! Thank you👍
Looking at this makes realize that I spend way too much time farting around on details, I should just get on with the job and get the engine going.
The best 289 tear down I’ve seen
It's a Mustang so I had to subscribe
😂😂 because mustang🤘
You mean pretty Falcon Only real Mustang enthusiast will appreciate the 1974-1978 Mustang ll.
That 65 fastback, at sometime over the years, recieved a 66 grill
You are correct
What’s the deal with the dart sitting next to it? Would love to see more of that
71 Dart Swinger special. Factory 6 cyl auto car. All original everything including paint. There will be an episode or two on it when summer comes around👍
@@Theoldcarchannel. Cant wait!
great video ,this will only get better for you as you and your dad move along in the project, to many keyboard kings here full of opinions, just enjoy the work and do it the way you and your dad want to, looking forward to the next video in the series
Thanks Bob, they don't get to me lol. People say "restore, restore!" I dont want this car perfect, all I want is it to be mechanically sound and that's it, if they don't like it🤷♂️stay tuned for part 4 coming out this week👍
