How to get good at iRacing: 1. Drive real race cars for twenty years 2. Coach racing for fifteen years 3. Crush Mazda noobs after fifteen laps of practice Seriously though, this was awesome to watch. It's interesting to see a pro racer getting into sim racing.
Scott, you said that you did only 15 laps before the race and that you've never raced in this track before. How about a video showing how you start practicing on new tracks, you process of finding de racing line and some tips on how to aproached unknown tracks?
Been simracing for about 25 years now (apparently, not very well). From just watching the few videos you've put up, I learned more in the past few weeks about what has been slowing me down than I did in the decades prior. You explain things that a normal person can understand, and instantly apply. Love this channel.
iRacing actually has a series of videos that are pretty good if you'd like actual schooling (and I've heard good things about VRS). I'm too damn stubborn at my age to do that so it has taken damn near 2 years but I should get my iRacing A license for the start of next season. (Like I'm good enough for that yet but at least I understand where I am and I can drive within myself now instead of crashing every few laps. I'm still not up to a 2 hour stint yet but that is my goal - join a team and do things like 12 and 24 hour races.)
@@markodarkovski5791 What a weird reply. My first was "Indianapolis 500 - The Simulation", which was actually Papyrus' first sim (as far as I know) in 1989. That was a good time, but it wasn't until they released Indycar Racing in 1993 that I got hooked. NASCAR Racing came along in 1994. So...several were available.
Hi! There are a few comments about the audio being out of sync. It's because the frame rate variation, but no worries, I've sorted it out in the next video! Apologies.
Driver61 Sim Racing No worries man! Been using your videos to improve my sim driving for a bit now, excited to see you join iRacing. Hope to see you out on track!
Might I suggest using/downloading Handbrake? It's a free program that will compress/convert videos so you won't have to deal with huge video files that are tens of gigabytes but it also converts the videos to a CONSTANT framerate. This is immensely useful since video editing software like Adobe Premiere don't handle variable framerates well which causes the audio sync errors.
I just started iRacing myself this year after a lifetime of loving motorsports but never getting to try it. When you start driving the other cars you really do start to understand how each one has it's own personality and characteristics that make handling them unique to each car/track combo. I learned so much from this video and look forward to learning more as you progress through the sim and try new cars and tracks.
This is fantastic, I've been playing iRacing for a few years now. A weekly chore of mine is to always look for track guides and video references of the track that is currently in rotation in iRacing. There are of course already video guides of these tracks but never the most recent video, iRacing updates the tracks on the quarterly-year basis and these changes in certain tracks make outdated videos unusable because there are significant changes in references. I would love it if you could do weekly races and possibly track guides for the weekly track rotation in iRacing. There a bunch of series, but seeing this as a driving coaching channel i think the main focus should be on rookie mazda, there are alot of iRacing like myself are looking good coaching channel like this. Thank you for providing us with these videos, me and my race craft sincerely appreciate everything you've done for this community.
Don't read too much into this. Hes braking too hard and loosing so much speed in the highspeed corners. You should be doing 59s or 58s, hes doing 1.01. Just focus on confidence once you get to where he is in the video, practice will help, also watching people set good times while in the sim.
As enjoyable as your other channel Scott! Loved the honesty about getting nerves in the sim too. A man of your racing calibre getting sim nerves makes all the rest of us feel so much more human :)
Tips for iracing: drive mazda until out of rookie, they are one of the best cars for close racing. You are split 1 speed easy with a small adjustment to the sim. Then new season openwheels or gt cars offer a huge amount of racing. Irating should climb with your skills fast.
Mazda is like Wreckfest.... i have so good fights in Assetto Corsa, i have only crashkids in Iracing. For me, Iracing is a realy bad Game because the community is bad in the Rookie, D and C
@@christophmeier1457 yeah, the huge divebombs, punts, crashes, more divebombs and telenovella rapido rants are a part of iPaying. But races are good in most cars, now that theres 20k online near eery hour. But yes, AC is goid, ACC in damn good.
Nice Scott, Welcome to iRacing. Now redo the video because the MX5 now has the new tire model version 7, lol. iRacing is always changing. Really great showing the little bit of throttle to even out the balance of the car, I think that's going to help me a great deal. I've seen people just stamp on the throttle a lot coming out of corners and never understood how they could keep the thing in a straight line, but balancing the weight with the throttle and brake makes sense to me. Thanks.
@@driver61simracing10 ah brilliant. MX5s is where everyone that wants to do road racing in iRacing starts. Once you get out of Rookie license you can branch out a little more. This shouldn't take you long at all since you're a professional and know how to keep cars on the track. A lot of people go to the skip barber cars after rookies. Also there are the IMSA series at C licenses. You can check out www.iracingstats.com/ to see what series are popular right now. Looking forward to seeing a lot more on iRacing from your channel. Cheers.
I've been doing iRacing since last January, and just bought another year subscription when the Black Friday deal was still live. I love racing on this service. I mostly stick to asphalt and dirt ovals, but I have been dabbling a bit into road, although I haven't committed to a full road season. My heart is still in ovals and I love how high the competition is, and how hard you have to dig for times, especially on an oval circuit where being off the line by a few inches can cost you pole position. Road racing is super fun and gratifying. I highly recommend that if you do iRacing, try one of the other disciplines out that you don't mess with.
That last bit about losing concentration easier in the sim, I can totally relate. I have had very similar experiences over the years trying to work my way into sims. No choice now, need to power through. Thanks for the content.
Just started a few weeks ago running Nordschleife tourist on Assetto Corsa, got stuck on running 6:25's with GT3 cars after about a week or so, watched some vids here, learned a few things and it's almost instantly run my PB from 6:25 to running steady 6:17's with PB of 6:14,9. Very helpful videos and info.
You're smashing it dude. I found your channel yesterday and I've already learned so much form your vids. Tracks that cross over with Gran Turismo Sport are super handy too. Laguna here I come!
Your first iracing race and you crush it! Wish I could be at that same spot. I've been watching your videos for years trying to get better on the track. I ride motorcycles and while it's different it's not that much different. Lots of the same concepts apply. I struggle with brake markers and being brave enough to brake later and hold the speed through corners. I struggle with that in sims and on track. Hopefully I'll learn it just takes a lot more time and experience than I have. Awesome to see you getting into sim racing.
Looking forward to more iRacing from you, just started 2 days ago myself and love your videos! Really interesting to hear what you said about losing focus in the sim, seems to be something that I have noticed too vs. driving IRL.
Really nice commentary! Explains a lot of things behind the going fast part :P And of course hearing from an actual Pro irl racer that those pixels are actually pretty close to Real Life is always a good thing! Hopefully we will see you in ACC too!
I love this video series. The focus on technique is super helpful. I'm learning a lot. It's also fun to watch you on your journey into sim racing. I hope to see you on the track some time, even if I'm too far behind for you to see me. LOL!
welcome to iRacing! you should check out VRS (Virtual Racing School) - you can use their service to record full telemetry from iRacing and analyze your lines/inputs, might make for good learning and good content. cheers
If you go to your profile and scroll all the way down you will see 3 things required for getting to then next license level “Do x amount of races” “Do x amount of time trails” “Have safety rating above 3.0” If you have done all this, you will rank up at the end of the season. If you wanna rank up faster you need 4.0 safety rating. Note races only count if it’s a race that require your current licens level :p The term used by iracing is mpr
Thank you for this video Scott. I just joined iracing a couple weeks ago and it's my first time doing sim racing, so I've got a huge learning curve ahead of me. I've been making huge improvements in my lap times, but still find myself well off the average pace of other racers and had been struggling to know why. Now I think I've learned why from your video. This should help me a lot with how to work on improving now. 😊 Would love to see this kind of video on other circuits with different corner types
Love that you are doing iracing now. Definitely do some videos with some higher powered cars like the Radical or the super popular F3 car. It would be neat to see you doing some oval or dirt stuff too. Maybe in the future you could do a video talking about mental fade and how to keep focused during endurance type races.
Great Video, would have needed this when i started the Mazda in iRacing. Now you will need to get out of Rookie and then continue with the Skippy! Fun Race car to race in iRacing. Iracing is my favorite sim btw and i look forward to more iracing videos
Just building my first sim rig, and also just bought my first track car (a Spec Miata). My hope is that the sim racing will help with my track driving. Track time is so hard to come by (and expensive) that I want to make the best of it. I bought a kart three years ago and your other channel has helped a lot. I'm looking forward to following this channel.
I have never seen someone so thoroughly smash the field in their first race on iRacing. But it is you, so no surprise there. I noticed you talked about slightly braking into The Uphill. I haven't driven the track with baseline setup in a long time, but I know you can take it with just a lift with a setup. The key is to put the car on the grass slightly, but not enough to get an off track. As far as starting out, you'll be required to get your D license throught the Global MX5 Cup series. Once you have your D license, I'd recommend the Skip Barber series. Amazing job, can't wait to race you in the higher license series :D
2 weeks ago i was racing in silverstone on iracing, i had 5 laps to memorize braking points, in the race i started 14th after 5 laps i was fighting against the 4th place, I think you are right about the time, in less than 15 laps you need to do everything, next year i will be racing in the circuit, both of your content is pretty useful, i love it.
YES...!!!! 😳 Please..., I'd love to follow your iRacing journey through to mastery...!!! 👌🤔 I'm also just starting to SIM on this platform and learning through your experiences would be invaluable.😎👍 Thanks...!!! 🤘
Awesome Thank you Scott - Iracing is absolutely the platform for what you're looking for. Certainly not perfect, but it's a great training / learning platform.
Here's something that might help in terms of sr and irating sr is counted by inc per corner practice and quali both count towards this in a race server, second thing is you will gain irating finishing in top half of field and sometimes ahead of car number welcome to iracing and have lots of fun
This is really great!!! It encourages me to keep trying to get better and not cut corners with practicing my techniques. I know that I am much faster in the real world since a real car gives you more feedback. Yet the sim really does provide an excellent platform to sharpen skills and learn more race craft. I'd love to know what kind of racing gear you are using, wheel, pedal, ect. And how you feel VR compares to the real thing!! A valve Index VR headset and a 2080ti graphics card almost makes it feel like you are there, I am adding some transducers to my racerig soon in order to get more actual feedback from the sim. Thanks for all of your videos, I really appreciate them and have already gotten faster from watching them :-) Can't wait to see you dominate in the gt class!!! Cheers!
really nice to see u coming on iracing. i do know the mx5 for having done multiple season on it, finishing in top 30 all div included. that said, as u begin on iracing, dont forget u race with baseline setup wich is adapted for any level of simracer and really understeering. driving with a good selfmade setup absolutly change the car. The second thing to know is that last season (s4) the gar was still driving on v6 of tyre model, ut s important to know cos this tyre midel as an optimal pressure between 145 and 150kpa. min cold pressure on the mx5 is 175kpa, so f4om the start of tge race u are allready 30kpa too high, and will go up to around 225kpa at the end of the race, giving u a feeling of huge understeer on last laps. It should be interesting to see your feeling between the baseline and a good fast setup wich are used in advanced mazda cup availble in class C
Nice to hear I'm not crazy and it wasn't in my head, coming from a professional racing coach. Glad you clarified this. i agree, it requires more concentration and it is also easier to make a mistake in a sim, i also find it hard to be fast in a sim where as in real life its easier... When you find out why this is the case please share :)
I hate that you say you've done 15 laps and you're about 4 seconds faster than me! Worragit. Great video, awesome to see you making iRacing specific videos as I've loved your previous videos - hope to see you on track some time!
I love these videos !! It's a really nice idea that you had. Keep em coming ! It would be nice if you could make a video talking about concentration or focus during a race. It seems that everytime I race for 30-45 min I can't stay focused all the way through. It's actually funny that you talked about this, I had the impression I was the only one. Thanks again for those awesome videos !
1:40 you're basically role playing in a sim 🤓 For me only 15 laps of practice would be way too little to be even remotely prepared, feel safe and not screw up badly 😬
Think about going to a new track as a new F1 driver and those 15 practice laps cost the team owners hundreds of thousands... and the whole world is watching. Their career and dreams depends on doing well, yet somehow they control all that and manage to go fast and not crash.
Chip Sutcliffe Yeah, but you see modern F1 drivers are lucky we have so many accurate sims now especially iRacing. Lando and Max regularly do sim racing and in fact max did practice a great high speed pass at SPA which he later executed in a real race
@@abhishekab1 The W series provided high quality simulations at all of their races of the next events' track, so the girls could get in some practice. I think many pros recognize the value, plus it is fun!
Chip Sutcliffe yeah true, just like the current gen of chess players get the most out of online chess. Players from smaller countries back in the 80’s and 90’s had to relocate to find competition. Not anymore
@@abhishekab1 There is pressure on developing young kart drivers in the USA to go to Europe to find the toughest competition. Teens are actually relocating in hopes of getting the best preparation to get to F1. Simulation is good, but there is nothing like actual wheel to wheel... It is crazy what it takes to get a shot at F1.
Great video Scott! I would love to get your view on others sims such as ACC, rfactor2, etc and how they compare. It seems to me they all behave quite differently, but I don't have the real life comparison.
iRacing is the place to be for good online racing against other drivers. Assetto Corsa is a good sim for just having some fun in. rFactor 2 is a sim that takes some dedication to get working well and is probably the most detailed, physics-wise, of all current simulators.
I started this week for the first time and agree it is easier to make a mistake here than when I raced in real life. What I have found for me wether it’s iracing or just f1 games against AI is my mind can drift off and think about other things such as work, or life or friends because I am in a safer environment at home. While in the actual car there was nothing else to think about other than the task at hand and the feeling the car had over my entire body.
im tempted not doing this comment but will do it anyway Scott. So: First corner way less braking, around 60%, carring more speed into the t1. in turn 3 the long left hadner you can do a doble apex, braking much late and into the turn, going over the midle of circuit but not to much, relising the brake, turn in. and u will get yourself pretty much perfect for the second apex. exiiting into the next right hander with no lift after exiting t3 second apex. going into the right hand before uphill... u should brake just as soon as the shack at your right side desapears from your vision, with a small tap on the brakes and trail braking just a tiny bit into the apex, and full trhotle after.. if u make those changes u will probay gain just there 1.5 seconds at least..... some where in my "channel", you have a few races on that track with 45º, and a few laps as well, if not mistaken my best lap there is something around the high 57s low 58s .
Really excellent content Scott. Love to hear about your driving the Spec Racer Ford. It's an very interesting car in as far as the dynamics / physics work as well.
The saint is for you to work on every aspect of racing. It allows you the opportunity put in enough locks so you can do the track with a blindfold on. It gives you the muscle memory and the opportunity to test your Fitness and fatigue levels. It will also allow you to work on the specific parts of a race weekend
Guys in the race have been grinding this track for months and here comes driver61 with no knowledge of the track. Or car. Or game. And wins lapping a few.
I hope to see you on the track one day! I just started myself, so I doubt I'll be in the same split as you, at least for a while. My recommendation for when you inevitably get your B license is try the SCCA Spec racer Ford, and the C class Radicals you may be comfortable in. What you think about the tracks you have been to vs real life would also be a neat perspective to hear. Cheers, and great video!
Great work! I'm really glad that I found your channel! One thing that confuses me is how do we drive just by seeing the rev's counter? I know noob question, but I just did my first track day a few weeks ago.
Great video. Would be cool if you shifted between the camera angles so that we can see how close you cut the corners etc. I'm definitely watching the next one. Like to see how you progress and keep comparing it to real world racing - it's interesting 👍👍👍👍
Mazda cup is absolutely the correct place to start, I would also encourage you to try the Formula 3 rookie series aswell as the Mazda cup to help build iRating and SR.
Yes, a thousand times yes. It's easier to make a mistake in sim racing than it is in the real world. I feel like this is a thing that the sim racing world doesn't talk about enough. As awesomely immersive as sim racing is, it's not the same, and the G-forces aren't the only difference. The amount (and type?) of mental effort you have to put in to maintain your focus is, I would argue, at least as important a difference as the lack of G-forces.
The safety rating is simple to understand if you go off or get caught up/cause in a crash. You'll get a small notification during the race (an off-track is x1 and crashes can range from x4) and you've got a set limit before being disqualified (That's normally around 16 if I recall rightly) Irating is slightly more confusing at first, but to try and simplify it, when you've joined a race you're given a number (like in this video you got #11), So the aim is to finish higher than the number given, so lower the number (using the #11 in the video), you would need to try and be higher than that number. However, the irating will also fluctuate depending on the strength of the field. I've been in races on there where I've finished 9th and got 500IR, and in other races I've finished 4th and got 250IR. Hopefully, anyone who knows the complete science behind Irating will be able to explain it a lot better than I have However, I would love to see more content with Iracing, while it's an expensive sim, for open lobby racing for me it's the best one out there. I think since using it in July this year, I've only seen one person get cursed out for a simple mistake. Of course, that probably changes when you're in the top split for a race and all that. But I've enjoyed racing on there and cannot wait to get back on to the service.
nice videos. start also with iracing. have so lot problems with braking and throttle. nice to found your channel. Hope you make more races...... and explanations for technique
Don’t know if you know or not, but using auto clutch or auto blip significantly slows you down when shifting, which can really hurt in road when you have people closely behind or in front (when you start racing better drivers). It looks like you have a pretty sick setup, so I’d assume you have a clutch pedal, and I’d definitely recommend using it. Great video, tho! Really really insightful for an NASCAR guy like me!
Great video, I have been sim racing for a while and I never thought of the weight of the car as you explain it here. Perhaps you may try the skippy where tactics and strategy play a big part in the race.
Can't believe you've never tried iRacing before, awesome, you got my subscription. PS: In future iRacing videos, kindly change the Game title in the description to iRacing, it's currently Assetto Corsa. Cheers!
I have come to find that in simracing it is difficult to be fast mainly because there is no feedback through your butt. In real life learning the track, when to brake, when to accelerate and where to place the car is so much easier when actually feeling it. I also have a harder time focusing in sims, I think it’s because my brain knows I’ m not hurdling through the landscape at 100 km/h. Great vids, thanks for sharing.
It's great fun. For me I use the guides at virtual racing school to help me learn the tracks and turn-in points for various cars. Very fast dudes on VRS with great tips. Helps me a lot, maybe not you so much though. :)
Was this before or after the newest update? They've updated the tire model for the mx5 recently. The new tire model is much more dynamic when it comes to grip levels and tire temperatures. The car is super slippery the first few laps until tires come up to temp. I'd like to learn and understand your approach to changing breaking points and finding the limit (while being competitive) with dynamic tire grip that can change dramatically over a race.
Found your Channel a while ago now and I have watched most of them. I'm only a casual racer in video games but love the science behind racing in most things competitive. You speak and explain clearly in a way I very much like. Looking forward to more videos for the help. Especially ones in regard to sim racing.
Like you I've noticed sims, at least in Assetto Corsa, tend to be less stable than actual cars I know on tracks I know and that may be why its is easier to make mistakes. I think the key factor is I can't kill myself or destroy the car so I push harder. I actually find I'm about 5% quicker in the sim and that can cause small errors to become large. I'm trying to control that. There are other factors but that's a big one for me. In spite of all that I find it an exciting practice and learning medium.
I think the reason why you feel you can make mistakes easier in the sim is because you dont get all the information of what the car is doing. It takes some time to adopt or forcast the car behaviour in the sim and also the kind of rig you are using can give you more information (like load cell brakes, DD Wheel, telemetry based transducers or a motion rig). I also find it quiet hard to get a sense of speed using monitors. With VR I felt confident much quicker. Nice to have a real world racer giving feedback on sims. That is very useful for developers to further improve there software 👍
Lime Rock is my favorite track, unfortunately you don't get the beauty of it in sim racing. Having driven it both in sim and real world I would concur that sim is more twitchy. For instance on the uphill turn that you say is difficult you really only need to lift and the compression of the car with the uphill give you great grip. (the danger at the top is real if you don't straighten the wheel). And that isn't with a Miata. The rest was spot on great video congrats on the win!!
Amazing video! I set my goals to 1% of the best time, like you did on that 61 laps challenge, but I'm still 3 to 4 seconds behind. I'm trying to adjust my vision and be gentler on the inputs, but still a lot of time behind...
Just so you know you can map a button for telemetry record and view it on motec. I believe it's ctrl t by default. As well as virtual racing school has their free telemetry app. Safety rating isn't really important in iracing, once you hit B class you can pretty much have everything available. Irating is a number which represents your talent or at least it tries to, but it also incorporates safety as you have to finish well to gain irating. Rookie is mostly mazada D Class is fixed bmw gte brand new this season, as well as vln when it comes back, and skippies C Class is imsa B Class is vrs and ilms A class is formula 1 which rarely is popular F3 and porsche 911 cup are also somewhat popular the cars are fantastic but I don't remember its licence. The cup car I would believe the to be the most realistic in all road series. Typically people stick to one car or one class as that is what is believed to be the best way to reach your max potential. If you want to run GT3 you can do imsa or vrs or vln. If you want to gte you can do fixed bmw gte, imsa or ilms. If races reach above a certain number of entries there are multiple splits, the higher your irating the higher split you will be in. Which generally means better racing in regards to predictable safety, pace, ability to fight. Lower splits are a complete wreck fest. There are three primary endurance events, vln which you don't need a team mate, 6h iELMS which are every other weekend starting off the 2nd weekend of the season, you require a team mate and the same with vrs which are 3 hour and every weekend. I would think for your channel: Most people drive gte, imsa is probably the most popular and would want your advice on those cars and tracks. There are three dominate purchasable setups, pure racing, virtual school racing and Craig's setup shop. Most competitive people will run these setups as is, or with a minor tweak. But people will also be interested to hear how you go about car setup. Team redline aka lando norris, Max Verstappen and others are notorious for making their own setups which are insane. Lastly being a real life racer people are highly interested in how sims compare to real life, you've done a video on this already but you could easily talk about it in every video as it's interesting as most have never driven a real sports car and want to know how big their e peen is. Thanks for another awesome video! BTW common apps people run are crew chief, kapps, sdk gaming, simhub or z1. If you press ctrl f12 in replay mode you can bring up the camera and adjust it. In options you can remove steering wheel, or remove steering wheel and hands.
Can you please do a video on MR layout cars? They seem be a completely different animal and I just can't get my head around them! Thank you so much for these amazing lessons, this information is worth its weight in gold!
Your not alone Stephane, The track is hard and the car want's to kill you. Moving the break balance towards the front makes braking easier I'm using 52%. I'm a total newbie to iRacing, learning as I go, so my advice may not be the best. Just done practice laps so far, I think staying at the back and watching the mayhem in front is the best method if you are not on the front row of the grid. Iain
Great video thank you. That said, there's a huge amount of time left on the table in your laps. You aren't flat in places you can be. Not using all the track. Wrong line into turn 2. There's an easy 3 seconds to be found. You should be mid 58's with the correct lines.
Also, I notice I sometimes lose focus on long stints in iRacing. I think it turns into too much muscle memory if no other cars are around you. Like I stop thinking about things like: did I turn in too early, did I understeer, etc. As for what to do next: I say keep with free content for a while. For fun try ovals - being in a pack of cars can be hectic but fun.
How to get good at iRacing:
1. Drive real race cars for twenty years
2. Coach racing for fifteen years
3. Crush Mazda noobs after fifteen laps of practice
Seriously though, this was awesome to watch. It's interesting to see a pro racer getting into sim racing.
you forgot his last name is Mansell....
Check out David Perel's channel. Did pretty much the opposite, still a very impressive guy
@Roger Crew not a good idea to be open about hacking your girlfriend's account
Scott, you said that you did only 15 laps before the race and that you've never raced in this track before. How about a video showing how you start practicing on new tracks, you process of finding de racing line and some tips on how to aproached unknown tracks?

iRacing actually has a series of videos that are pretty good if you'd like actual schooling (and I've heard good things about VRS). I'm too damn stubborn at my age to do that so it has taken damn near 2 years but I should get my iRacing A license for the start of next season. 25 years? What simracing game was available back in 1995 exactly?
Same here, I'm 3 months in. The iRacing community for the most part is incredibly helpful and friendly. I've been loving it!
I learned more in a 12 :10 video than I learned turning practice laps. Thank you very much.
Don't read too much into this. Hes braking too hard and loosing so much speed in the highspeed corners. You should be doing 59s or 58s, hes doing 1.01. Just focus on confidence once you get to where he is in the video, practice will help, also watching people set good times while in the sim.
Scott, I started iRacing a few months ago and your videos have been a huge help! Keep 'em coming!!
As enjoyable as your other channel Scott! Loved the honesty about getting nerves in the sim too. A man of your racing calibre getting sim nerves makes all the rest of us feel so much more human :)
YES MORE IRACING CONTENT PLEASE !! awesome video :)
Welcome to iRacing!
Best racing sim platform IMO. Great video too! Keep the iRacing videos coming...SUBSCRIBED!
@Will.J i'm D...its like forza motorsport or need for speed. the people cant drive, divebomb and so on
Nice Scott, Welcome to iRacing.
Thanks.
This was after the update yesterday!
This is one of the most informative videos on TH-cam on the details of race driving. Amazing!
Looking forward to more iRacing from you, just started 2 days ago myself and love your videos! Really interesting to hear what you said about losing focus in the sim, seems to be something that I have noticed too vs. driving IRL.
Really nice commentary! Explains a lot of things behind the going fast part :P
And of course hearing from an actual Pro irl racer that those pixels are actually pretty close to Real Life is always a good thing!
Hopefully we will see you in ACC too!
I love this video series. The focus on technique is super helpful. I'm learning a lot. It's also fun to watch you on your journey into sim racing. I hope to see you on the track some time, even if I'm too far behind for you to see me. LOL!
welcome to iRacing! you should check out VRS (Virtual Racing School) - you can use their service to record full telemetry from iRacing and analyze your lines/inputs, might make for good learning and good content.
cheers
You dont need VRS for that. You can use MOTEC or ATLAS(only limited file size) to do the same with more customizability.
Ye i'm guessing they'll be snapping him up pretty quick :D Aggressive takeover! (overtake?!)
If you go to your profile and scroll all the way down you will see 3 things required for getting to then next license level
“Do x amount of races”
“Do x amount of time trails”
“Have safety rating above 3.0”
If you have done all this, you will rank up at the end of the season.
If you wanna rank up faster you need 4.0 safety rating. Note races only count if it’s a race that require your current licens level :p
The term used by iracing is mpr
Thank you for this video Scott. I just joined iracing a couple weeks ago and it's my first time doing sim racing, so I've got a huge learning curve ahead of me. I've been making huge improvements in my lap times, but still find myself well off the average pace of other racers and had been struggling to know why. Now I think I've learned why from your video. This should help me a lot with how to work on improving now. 😊
Would love to see this kind of video on other circuits with different corner types
I’m learning so much thanks to you and my lap times already improved by following your tips. I’ve also became more consistent. Awesome content !
I built my rig with the same challenges of not getting enough track time. Think it will help overall.
Welcome to iRacing mate. It can get frustrating quickly but also very enjoyable.
Cheers!
Glad to see you also have the same mindset, the point of the Sim is to help us improve IRL
I learn so much from your clear and concise instruction. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise!
Loved this video and excited to see your journey into sim racing.
really nice to see u coming on iracing. i do know the mx5 for having done multiple season on it, finishing in top 30 all div included. that said, as u begin on iracing, dont forget u race with baseline setup wich is adapted for any level of simracer and really understeering. driving with a good selfmade setup absolutly change the car.
Amazing to see how the lap time has dropped off on the new tires. Some may not want to accept this, but it's more realistic. Great video!
I hate that you say you've done 15 laps and you're about 4 seconds faster than me! Worragit.
Great video, awesome to see you making iRacing specific videos as I've loved your previous videos - hope to see you on track some time!
great channel been following for a while, helped me get into iracing cars I want to drive and get results, good to see you in the sim.
Love these videos! Have you thought about getting tobii eye-tracker? Would be amazing to compare how your vision changes from quali to the race.
1:40 you're basically role playing in a sim 🤓
For me only 15 laps of practice would be way too little to be even remotely prepared, feel safe and not screw up badly 😬
Really enjoying watching your videos and hopefully I'm learning something 🤔.
All the best Nick
Yessss this is awesome! Please do more! I look forward to seeing how you battle in the mid field
While in the actual car there was nothing else to think about other than the task at hand and the feeling the car had over my entire body.
great to see you iRacing, Scott, come visit us in ProMazda when you get up a couple licenses!
I agree mistakes in iRacing seem to happen way more! But it teaches you lessons about real life racing too.
im tempted not doing this comment but will do it anyway Scott. So:
First corner way less braking, around 60%, carring more speed into the t1. in turn 3 the long left hadner you can do a doble apex, braking much late and into the turn, going over the midle of circuit but not to much, relising the brake, turn in. and u will get yourself pretty much perfect for the second apex. exiiting into the next right hander with no lift after exiting t3 second apex.
going into the right hand before uphill... u should brake just as soon as the shack at your right side desapears from your vision, with a small tap on the brakes and trail braking just a tiny bit into the apex, and full trhotle after.. if u make those changes u will probay gain just there 1.5 seconds at least..... some where in my "channel", you have a few races on that track with 45º, and a few laps as well, if not mistaken my best lap there is something around the high 57s low 58s .
Would love to see how to drive the Porshe 991 cup car and your set up. It's a slippery bugger and the track is very unforgiving.
Really....after your "first" race in iracing....now your going to tell us how to go fast. CMON MANNNNNN
You'll get a small notification during the race (an off-track is x1 and crashes can range from x4) and you've got a set limit before being disqualified (That's normally around 16 if I recall rightly)
Irating is slightly more confusing at first, but to try and simplify it, when you've joined a race you're given a number (like in this video you got #11), So the aim is to finish higher than the number given, so lower the number (using the #11 in the video), you would need to try and be higher than that number. However, the irating will also fluctuate depending on the strength of the field. I've been in races on there where I've finished 9th and got 500IR, and in other races I've finished 4th and got 250IR. Hopefully, anyone who knows the complete science behind Irating will be able to explain it a lot better than I have
However, I would love to see more content with Iracing, while it's an expensive sim, for open lobby racing for me it's the best one out there.
Cheers!
Oops!
Amazing channel. I'm glad we have someone like you to help us out and provide such good feedback/tips. THANKS!!! Jake from NYC
Really enjoy your channel. It's helped a lot. It would be great if you could do a team up video with the Sim Racing Garage and his new 6dof rig.
Love your channel, great videos!
It's great fun. For me I use the guides at virtual racing school to help me learn the tracks and turn-in points for various cars. Very fast dudes on VRS with great tips. Helps me a lot, maybe not you so much though. :)
Really nice to see you on iRacing
😘🤗
You should do a video teaching how to practice to get better and better
great info. really interested on how you progress and what you make of the other cars.
take the Radical SR8 to Lime Rock Park..very fun and fast..Thanks Scott for your help!! Would be awesome to go up against you one day..cheers!!
Also, if you haven't done one already, take us for a trip around your sim racing setup!
This was straight after. Yes, I noticed the tyres were struggling for the first lap or so!
Nice Video. Good Tips and well explained! Go on!
Great video.
Now I'm really looking forward to when you get to the GT/ GTE cars. :)
😎 Welcome to the club and the pleasure of seeing you on the 😁
Great video. I would love to hear your thoughts on Porsche 911 Cup car.
Happy to see you in iRacing 👍
Awesome stuff. Welcome to iracing 😀
Thanks! It's amazing!
Great video, Scott! Let me ask, what shifting method were you using? Paddles?
Yes, was using paddles, I don't have a shifter at the moment
Rookie is mostly mazada
D Class is fixed bmw gte brand new this season, as well as vln when it comes back, and skippies
C Class is imsa
B Class is vrs and ilms
A class is formula 1 which rarely is popular
F3 and porsche 911 cup are also somewhat popular the cars are fantastic but I don't remember its licence.
I would think for your channel:
Most people drive gte, imsa is probably the most popular and would want your advice on those cars and tracks.
Thanks for the video it showed me where I have been messing up.
great channel man thanks for this!
Can you please do a video on MR layout cars? They seem be a completely different animal and I just can't get my head around them!
Thank you so much for these amazing lessons, this information is worth its weight in gold!
Thank you! Very informative on driving the mazda. I have difficulty driving the porshe 991 cup car, would love your input on it, very lively car :)
