I never tire of watching this tutorial, I’m getting better every time. This technique is so forgiving and I’m really close to taking to the delightful shop that is kind enough to take my work. Thank you !
Hello Loved the video! May I make a suggestion? Instead of using newspaper to work on may I suggest a piece of drywall. It handles the heat better without possibly burning.
I actually work on a fireproof soldering mat in my workshop! But I did this video at home and the newspaper is for use with the liquid flux so it does not splatter everywhere; it absorbs the extra liquid flux and as I work for a while it saturates the paper and makes it wet - it scorches here due to the technique. I'm an old timer believe it or not and when I began my career making stained glass 30 years ago we did not even have such a thing as soldering mats! But good of you to point that out for everyone else!
Hi Laura. I have been watching your videos so I can learn how to solder jewelry. You are excellent. I am wondering what the name of the blue liquid is that you use to give it the black petina
This technique is from my first book, Boho Chic Jewelry: 25 Timess Designs Using Soldering, Beading, Wire Wrapping and More (published in 2013, Penguin Random House)
Can you help me trouble shoot? I used a red rubber stamp to attempt to make a pattern. It slightly melted the stamp though. Did I possibly press for too long?
Do you have any tips on how to make your tin stay liquid for a longer time? I've tried many times, but it always cools down in two seconds, so there isn't enough time to make the stamp. Thanks :)
I am having the hardest time trying to get the solder to stick on copper wire, washers and stamping discs. I peeled off the plastic, I've ruffed them up with steel wool, wiped them with alcohol, used a clean iron - well heated and the solder turns into a ball on the flux and doesn't stick. I love the look of this technique and have watched your videos, especially this one, numerous times. I'm ready to give up. Can you please give me any other ideas to try to make it work? Thank you so much. I have the BOHO book too. I hesitate to try anything because I'm so frustrated.
What temp for iron ?? I am having terrible time getting the solder to adhere to my metal. Could my flux be too old?? My sister passed on her supplies about 3yr since used. Also searched Amazon for red stamps. There are stamps, brand name “ Red Stamp “ is this what I need. Solder is new, just bought. Have watched tutorials on tinning my tip. May buy new one, could that be the problem ?? Thank you if you have time to reply. I’ll try not to pester you !
I have links in the description below the video to supplies that I recommend...I wish I could say what's wrong in your case but I can't possibly know! Be sure to watch all of my soldering videos for tips. My books have much info. as well. I will be creating more in-depth tutorials in the future in my Patreon once I get that in order, that might be something you would be interested in.🌻
Is there a recommendation for a dual side application technique? I would imagine while duplicating the technique on the reverse side that the underside would be altered due to the high temp level. Is there a tip that you can suggest?
Hot! I think I talk about that in my last Q&A video (If I didn't my bad, then it's coming up in a new one in a bit) Lead free solder needs a hot iron, 80 watt or more is good. Thanks for watching. 🌻
I’m so glad I revisited this video I totally missed the beginning with the solder on rings. Have an idea, if it works out I’ll share will everyone, I am so grateful for wonderful artists such as yourself leading us into new adventures!!!
Wow this is so cool! Can I ask when looking for stamps do I just type in vulcanised red rubber stamp? There only seem to be a few designs that come up. Maybe I'm not searching the right term? Thanks!
Ive started my journey making jewlery and have used youe videos to learn so much, also getting your books soon! I did have a question, does soft solder jewlery smell bad for a time ? I used lead free solder but jve noticed a strong bad smell on my jewlery until a couole weeks pass and then the smell is gone. Is this normal? I cant find the answer anywhere
You say “red stamp” , I have some that are more pink would they work as well? I guess I’m wondering if there’s a specific color or stamp material(s) that you are aware of that will not work. Thanks!
Wonderful video! Do you find that the 80 w soldering iron also works for melting well lead free soldering without lumps, etc? In your blog and book you were suggesting 100w. Thanks!
@@LauraBethLove Laura what keeps the rubber from melting when it comes in contact with the hot solder? Is it a certain brand or kind of rubber mold we should buy?
@@jennyclark6183 Must be vulcanized rubber, should be a link in the description, if not, it's in another of my videos. I'll eventually get some links to some up on my amazon page

Once again. Great video
Beautiful! I am going to attempt to combine this with my stained glass. Thank you for sharing.

hi , i love your art works ❤️
I wanted to ask you, why is red rubber specifically used?
Because it will not melt

thank you for this tutorial. I'm having issues with getting the solder to stick to the copper. It seems to just flake off
Clean the copper, make sure it is copper and not plated with something else
Beautiful very creative

What is the solder made of? I know it’s lead free, but what is the metal?
silver, tin, copper

Use a butane torch
@@LauraBethLove thanks, i'll try that :)
Thank you
What soldering iron do you recommend?
I have a few recommendations on my amazon page, look for one at least 80 watts www.amazon.com/shop/laurabethlove
How do you keep solder in liquid form to stamp it
Work quickly but carefully! Hold the iron on the solder longer until it is liquid and be ready to gently stamp right away.
Thank you .
Do you use some sort of coating to keep the copper etc from oxidizing?
Nope
I never knew about this. I love it.. Good to try and do it. For the solder gun can I use my little touch I use for making jewelry?
Yes you can

Try heating the copper thoroughly first, hold the tip of the iron on it and let it get nice and hot and use enough flux
@@LauraBethLove Thanks Laura...... does it matter that I'm using paste instead of liquid flux?
@@nrred It shouldn’t… Though I recommend liquid
@@LauraBethLove thank you!!
Can you use this sauder ontop of sterling?
Yes

Can you embellish the solder
