    You don't need any fancy equipment and no need for apologies. Your videos are great and SO informative! They are really helpful and encouraging to beginning gardeners like me. They make me feel like there is so much that's possible if I just learn from others. I always thought I couldn't do it, because I wasn't a natural green thumb. But if I can decorate my house (I do that well!), then I can decorate my "outside house", too. :) Thank you for all you do!

    What a great concise video about having the luxury of forethought (LOL) and a plan!
    You nailed it: The same principles that apply to interior design translate to garden design.
    You revealed the #1 question most people don't ask themselves: How do you want to use this room? Also you stressed connection of the rooms for flow.
    This is a WOW garden property - thanks for sharing.

We have a similar size property bought six years ago, but not half as well planned, you've given me lots of ideas. We struggle with a massive invasion of rampant weeds, so makes the task a bit daunting, as winters here are mild, not below 1-2 degrees Celsius and every season is a growing season where we live in NZ.

      @planttasticcookinggardenin1561  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, I would argue that my garden space is small but it's all relative to what you are used to. I helped farm on 7 acres as a kid. Gardening can be as cheap as a pack of seeds or as expensive as you would like. People shouldn't be afraid of cost. Most people start small until they know they really enjoy it!

    Loved this video! I don’t know if your going to add any more rooms to your garden but if you do, could you show the process of how to connect one room to the next, what size, layout, plants, hardscape etc... does it take to create a room? Also do you name your rooms and how many do you presently have? What ones are used most and why? I really enjoy your videos, and thanks for adding the storm in, that was gorgeous! What a fun spot you two had to watch it from.

    Thank you for sharing what is obviously a labor of love. I so appreciate what you’ve done with a typical urban yard.
    A couple things I noticed. It would be fantastic to have a whole picture view of your garden. Drone footage as an example. In the absence of a drone camera, a rough drawing of how the garden looks from above would be helpful.
    I too, like the bloopers at the end. This where your personality shines thru to enhance your gardening story.
    FYI, your content is professional, even if you are amateur film makers. A next step is to let go of apologizing for and/or acknowledging imperfections. Putting yourself out here for the world to react to is courageous. Know that the editing and flow of the content is interesting even if it was choppy to film.

    • @planttasticcookinggardenin1561
      @planttasticcookinggardenin1561  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments. We really appreciate it!! I will probably always be the type that points out my imperfections. It doesn't really bother me to have them or be aware of them. I see it as a way to grow and become better not as a put down to myself. I'm not a highly sensitive person thankfully.
      I thought about getting a drone but, in the end, decided against it. I would probably use it a couple times, crash it and never think about it again. I have always wanted to draw a full overhead schematic though so maybe you'll finally push me to do so! Thanks again! Have a great day :)

    Thank you for making this video. I needed the tip on running electric and water to other areas. We purchased a new property last month, it is a blank canvas. The back yard is one acre of grass. Starting a garden from scratch is so overwhelming. 😕

    • @planttasticcookinggardenin1561
      @planttasticcookinggardenin1561  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it can be overwhelming for sure so break it down into parts with the whole plan in mind and it will seem more manageable. Yes, run that electric and water, even if you're on a budget you can just run the lines without hooking up. We did that to our kitchen garden. Ray and I trenched and ran 1/2" line for drip/misting system to the future greeenhouse and an electric line. Both can be tapped into later and we won't have to tear up the garden. Congrats on the new property!! So exciting :)

I am in New Jersey….and even though we have lived in our home many years I am finally trying to do what you have done…..not making much headway….Not sure where to start! @planttasticcookinggardenin1561  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      2 acres, that’s wonderful! Start small like we did so it doesn’t feel overwhelming. One garden bed at a time and you will get there! I’ve been in my current house 22 years with less than 1/3 acre and i just made it around the entire property. Gardening is such a journey

    Great video!! I loved the storm!! You guys looked cozy in that spot! It was storming here in Northern Indiana last week when we had all the heat and humidity. Stormed almost every evening and night. Great ideas and things to think about prior to making rooms. Thanks 😊

    Hey Nicole! I just find your garden to be so welcoming! You have done an amazing job creating such a homey, beautiful space. I'm in north Jersey so we experienced that thunderstorm too! I garden solely on our deck because of heavy deer pressure. They even occassionally climb up on the deck and go after the hostas and arborvitaes we have in containers. I'm constantly spraying deer repellent. Oh to have a space without the deer!

      @planttasticcookinggardenin1561  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much! Oh my, you really have it tough. The deer just took out my hosta hedge in my front shade garden. We have medium deer pressure here but heavy rabbit pressure and bugs galore due to the lakes, creeks and blueberry fields surrounding us. Enclosing our garden with evergreens has made the deer much more cautious about lingering in our garden, plus I use the fishing line trick to throw them off lol. So nice to hear from a fellow Jersey person!!

    Great 👍 tips , I have one tree in my backyard and have to be careful where I plant more because of septic and Litchfield and that limits me quite a bit in what I can do. I’m also 65 and starting over , trees take a long time to mature and they are very important in any garden setting. So happy to share in all the beauty of your gardens

    • @planttasticcookinggardenin1561
      @planttasticcookinggardenin1561  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing, I couldn't imagine starting over! Yes, trees are so important. Could you plant a herbaceous border (shallow rooted plants) like I have next to my patio or is that not permissible? I have always had city water so I'm not familiar with septic fields.

      @@planttasticcookinggardenin1561 Thanks to downsizing this is where I am now. The Gentleman that pumped the tanks out after we moved in last year was very adamant about me not planting in a long wide strip through the backyard, he stood there motioning with his arms saying : This is mine !

      Good question! We've worked hard on many things over the years and now have a system that works so much better for us as far as pests and disease go (although every year we got hit by something. You can never be bomb proof). I spray my veggies every 3 weeks with BT and allow some chomping on my veggies, plant host plants to attract the bugs, plant perennials that attract beneficial insects and have water sources. I try to never spray for insects in my garden unless absolutely necessary to save a valued plant and only after dark when the beneficials are gone with a mild soap mixture or jet spray of the hose (beer traps, etc.). We work hard at promoting balance but it has taken us years.

    Here in the South we use pine needles for mulch. I buy my pine needles from Lowes or Home Depot.

    • @planttasticcookinggardenin1561
      @planttasticcookinggardenin1561  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We are located in the protected Pinelands of New Jersey. We remove our pine needles here as it's difficult to get things to grow around our pines and they stick to everything because of the sap. You can have ours for free if you want to come help us rake up the endless supply ; ) We'd welcome the help lol.

    Beautiful garden with such a welcoming feel, thanks to your relaxed style & personality-and hard work! I enjoyed seeing all the different garden rooms but especially love the fountain area. Is the fountain concrete, cast stone or resin? Do you know the manufacturer name? I’ve been looking for a similar one but haven’t been able to find one that size, most of them are too large for my garden. Thanks!

    • @planttasticcookinggardenin1561
      @planttasticcookinggardenin1561  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much! The fountain is concrete and the base measures 4' x 4'. Unfortunately I don't know the manufacturer as we bought it at our local nursery instead of ordering one. We also were having difficulty finding one that had the large pool at the bottom but wasn't overly tall. One day we just walked in the farmers market and both my husband and I turned to each other and said "it's perfect!". They had to drain it for us as it was running but they were very accommodating.

      Sun isn't the issue in this area and I don't have problems growing a shade garden as most of my garden is mature. Root competition, run-off from gutters is probably the problem although it's been solved with this shade rockery. All of the plants are doing great now! Thank you for the plant suggestions and I have all of those plants elsewhere in my gardens. They are all very popular in shade gardens and at garden centers.
