What's in my set of architectural documents? Sharing everything: drawings, schedules, + specs.

  • Drawings, schedules, specs.; I'm sharing all the deliverables I create for a typical custom residential project in the studio. Constructing a home involves thousands of decisions and the architectural design process is designed to document and catalog those decisions and convey that information to the entire project team: clients, contractors, consultants; anyone responsible for helping us construct our architecture.
Even for a small home, the number of decisions - from foundation to finish - can feel overwhelming. The more you draw + document before construction, the more control you'll have over the finished product. Anything you don't draw or document is simply a decision you're choosing to defer to someone else to make.
The drawings shown here are an in-progress set of documents, I still have stair plans, a finish schedule and interior details to complete. Typically, I'll release two packages of information: a shell package for the exterior shell of the structure and an interiors package. The first helps construction to proceed quickly and once under way, I'll develop the interior design, finishes and details with the client completing those during the early phases of construction. Also not shown are my consultant's drawings, which - for this project - consists of a set of structural engineering drawings.

      Hi Eric -
As always, great video. I recently purchased your drawing templates for AutoCAD and I have a quick technical question. In min 1:00 - 1:04, I see that you are adjusting the line weights on paper space; and the lines are showing as black lines regardless of the layer that they are on. How did you achieve that?
      Thanks!

Hi, Denis...that was actually in ModelSpace...if you watch the "Minimalist UI (my settings)" video comes with the template purchase you'll see exactly how to set it up.

I’m an architect with 15 years built work experience in UK. What I would like to point out to all the student architects watching this is the language of communication of architecture is universal. I wasn’t taught how to compile a construction tender package at university. This is only knowledge gained through years of practical experience. Hats off to Eric for a beautiful set of drawings

As a commercial subcontractor who does material take-offs for bids, your plans are a dream come true. In reality less than 5% of the documents I see ever come close to your level. When plans are vague our proposals are naturally inflated to cover worse case scenarios. Clear and precise documents may cost more up front but clarity makes the building process so much more enjoyable for contractors to work together to easily and competitively build what was designed. I hope some of those less than thorough architects take note of your channel and learn to elevate their work! Thanks for your channel, it's always inspiring.

Coming from a small design build company we've never really followed the standard masterformat, we have a loosely similar format for contract docs though not as detailed as that, and then just provide more drawing details to the site as the construction goes lol.. so you can imagine the constant client approvals for the actual drawings.. I've already left that office but I wish we knew this back then..

I always love the content you put out. Good video as usual. My sets usually include cover page, general notes, site plan, floor plan, elevations, sections, architectural details, architectural roof plan, electrical plan, foundation plan, roof framing plan, shearwall layout, fire sprinkler plan, and as of this year solar panel drawings.

Respect...solar panel drawings, absolutely! I deferred that decision to the installer once...now I show them on the roof plan. Thanks for watching...cheers...

A draftsman surprising architects with what I learned from you. Detailing everything thing. Breaking that thought in the industry that everyone knows what is to be done and that it's not necessary to do everything.
