Surviving the Chill: Staying Cozy Winter Camping

  • In this week's video, we headed into the Chippewa National Forest in search of solitude. Life can feel exhausting with the constant chatter from people and social media. So, I'm going to do a mental reset by getting away from it all, and I'm bringing you with.
    While loading up the camper Tuesday night, I forgot the ice auger......I had one job to do!! But it was ok because the ice was only 6 inches thick. My drone had another mishap, but i resloved the issue. At least I was able to catch something with the fishing pole. One day, I'll invest into a drone with anti-collision technology.
    With all that being said, Mother Nature decided to reward my efforts with an amazing sunset and a beautiful shot of the northern lights. We will go ice fishing again soon. I would like to make it a catch and cook video on day.
    I'm so thankful that I have the ability to escape into the wild and check out from society. I really want to thank everyone for the letters and gifts. Your kind words give me the motivation to make an adventure every weekend.
    Thanks for joining me on this week's camping adventure in the wild.
    The artichoke recipe:
    Two 14oz cans of artichoke hearts. (Not marinated)
    Drain and chopped up.
    One cup of sour cream
    One cup of mayonnaise
    16oz of softened cream cheese
    Two and a half cups of freshly grated parmesan cheese
    Garlic......one clove.... or four, depending on what a clove is.
    Dill weed to taste.
    Preheat grill, oven, or smoker to 350 degrees F
    Mix sour cream, mayo, cream cheese, garlic, and 2 cups of parmesan cheese. Stir until your arm falls off, or until the cream cheese is smooth.
    Put the dip in a baking pan. It will sweal up a little bit, so don't overload the pan. I used two bread tins.
    Sprinkle remaining half cup of cheese on top with a little bit of dill weed. (Dill weed is not necessary)
    Bake for 20 minutes or until hot and bubbly.

    Time to John-innovate !!! Bring my John-firecan kit (rocket stove) onto the lake. Bring lengthy copper tubing. Closed loop tubing. Place over the rocket stove and superheat the air which circulates to dropped copper tubing into the vertical water column creating warmed water that the fish will swim to and get warm (and get hungry). Then drop down some warm lure bait - and catch a gob of fish in that area !!!

    Kenny, the sunset was gorgeous and the northern lights were amazing!
    Yummy dip and naan…but you need to slather all that cheesy goodness onto a big french loaf, cut in half and baked in that snazzy oven!
    You had me laughing with the applause overlay! That drone can sure take a lickin’!
    I have been binging yoir videos from the beginning….wow oh wow! Loving them.
    I feel like I owe you gas money now..been on the road with you for a week!
    I have never been ice fishing and found it fascinating.
    Sometime you and Mandy need to make it to Utah.
    36 State Parks, 5 National parks 4 National forests and 4 recreation areas.
    With your rig, you would have maximum access to about 23 million acres of public land.
    Or so I am told..lol my butt is parked on a mountain that would take years to explore all the sites.
    Anyways…good food, good film, good friends..can’t ask for more than that!
    Thanks for bringing us along and see you next week!

    • @THHARRIS
      @THHARRIS 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I forgot to ask:
      What is the move called when you set up shots to show you coming and going?
      I assume you are driving away from the camera, but then go back and retrieve it. Clean it up in the edit.
      But what is that called? When I fist started watching, I assumed it was another person with you.
      But obviously that is not right.
      Either way, it must take ALOT of time. My favorite is when you drive over your camera. That’s just cooool!

    ..the fun thing I didn't snap to until I was a young Married man, myself. 😂 The math? Between 12/1/1066 and August 2nd, 1967?

That's why I had so many videos finding dispersed camping in the Chippewa compared to years past when I was in the Superior National Forest. I love your area. I even thought about moving that way years back. There was a position open in Silver Bay that I was interested in. But my girls were too young at the time for me to move that far away from their mom. Maybe one day Mandi and I will find a home on the North Shore. If you ever see me up that way, make sure to say hi.

      I used to go up there as a young man. I've done a few 2 week Portages.That is some truly pristine wilderness.
      It's too bad that the National Park service has banned recording without proper permits. I couldn't even make a video if I wanted to. Well.....if I paid for the application and provided a detailed itinerary of recording locations and times, I could see if they approve it. Then, if it is approved, I could pay for the required permits and shoot the video. The Department of Interior has really made it hard to push record on my Gopro in national parks.

    Your dip looks so good. I’m going to make it. Yum
    I have a question. Going down those back roads have you ever encountered another camper coming at you?

    • @KennyOfAllTrades
      @KennyOfAllTrades  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, it can happen, rarely campers... more often ATVs. The guy with the biggest rig usually gets to keep going. I'm always looking for pulloffs on my way in. Sometimes, you have to back up 1/2 mile in order to pull off and let the other pass. I have got into areas where we will meet head-on. We will both sit and look at each other for a few seconds, knowing that there's no pulloffs. That's when I'll get out and inform the other driver of why I can't back up. It's never been an issue. It gets harder at night when it's completely dark.

    Yeah...given how cold it is and how remote you camp sometimes, I think the generator is a keeper. Beautiful spot this week! I have never seen the northern lights with my own eyes, but it's on my list of things to hunt down. Thanks for the great video this week!

      I'm gonna try again next weekend. I'm bringing the auger this time. I hope to get into a school of croppies. Fish tacos sounds good. I saw a recipe on Fish N More for fish taco sauce. I'll have to find that.

    Great video, just like every week! Thank you for sharing your time and adventures with everyone. I recognized the bridge you drove over on your way up. Traveled that way many times to my uncles cabin years ago. Got me wondering where you are. As Minnesotans we think everything up north is "in the area".

      I figured someone would recognize Outing, or the street shots in Longville. It's definitely a cute little town. The snowflakes hanging from the street light kinda make it feel like Christmas.

    Mean this as a compliment, so hope you don't take offense. You are like the Mr Rogers of camping and the outdoors, love your channel. Haven't found many spots like the ones you hit here in North Texas, Just started exploring the Angelina Forrest last month, not many truly dispersed areas, but I found a couple of promising spots

    Wow, Kenny, you caught the Northern Lights on your time lapse, SOOOOO COOOOOOL! Simply beautiful! Your camping culinary skills are second to none, who cares if you catch a fish or not?! Another awesome video, so glad you make the extra effort to take us with every week. Sure, you forgot your auger, but there's always next week--at least it wasn't the coffee! Have a wonderful week, Kenny!

      I was thinking about making fish tacos next week. That way I'd be forced to catch a couple fish. Or i'm going to just eat a cabbage and sauce wrap for supper.

    Hi Kenny, you were talking about the scratches and beauty marks that your truck and camper have collected over time............between having a garage queen or having the enjoyment of the places it has given you........I could live with a few scratches, your rig is still a real beauty, I'd sure be proud to own it.
    I know you have thoughts about taking the inverter gen off the front but I think for myself anyway I would feel much better about having a redundant power source. When needed, it would power your AC through the hottest summer days and keep your batteries charged up to run the furnace on your approaching sub zero weather.

    • @KennyOfAllTrades
      @KennyOfAllTrades  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That is very true. I have about 3500 watt hours of inverter power in the camper. It just barely gets me by with electrical necessity. I'm thinking about taking out the finicky Onan Genetator. That would give me storage for a smaller generator. I think a 2500-watt unit would would fit in there. But I will have a hard time justifying buying a different generator when the Predator works great.

    • @richardkoch8752
      @richardkoch8752 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That Predator has been good to you Kenny. I have a Champion 2500 dual fuel inverter/gen that I got on Amazon for a heck of a good price a couple of years ago. I think with a "soft start" on your A.C. it would work good but that would be all. If not running the AC it would take care of the rest of the camper's needs. On gas it's super efficient and really pretty quiet. @@KennyOfAllTrades

    I say keep the generator, makes for an easy recharge, or to run the micro, or AC in the summer. I run mine the same way on a front mount, 2000 Ford F250 Super Duty, and a heavy 2001 S&S 8.5 camper, old stuff, but the camper was top of the line when new and has ALL the comforts. May need to upgrade t an AF one of these days!

      @KennyOfAllTrades  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think you are right about the generator.
      I do love this camper. It is 20 years old but still looks modern. The Arctic Fox Lineup has not changed much over the years. It is a 2004 M860. It looks just like the newer 811 models.
