Surviving a Truck Breakdown in Harsh Winter Camping

- Friday night, after work I headed into the Pillsbury State Forest. It was about 8 pm when I pulled into the equestrian campsite. The strong winds coupled with below zero temperatures made for an extremely fridged winter night. Thankfully I had two full 20-pound propane cylinders for the furnace, and a full tank of gas in the generator. I knew as long as everything was running properly, I would stay warm. The main road in the forest was plowed, but I planned on finding a dispersed site off a trial that had not been plowed. I thought I would wake up early Saturday morning and find a dispersed campsite in the daylight. I had planned to use the drone to capture video of my truck on the snowy trail, but the universe had a different plan in store.
Friday night the temperature dropped to -21degrees. When I attempted to start the truck, the Weather Channel was saying it was -17 degrees. Because of the extreme cold temperatures, the fuel in my truck gelled. I attempted to start the truck at least 10 times before finally admitted to being defeated my mother nature.
Unfortunately, this isn't the first time my truck has gelled up. I have been seeing this problem more and more over the last 4 or 5 years. From now on I will be running #1 in the truck all winter. I don't think corn and soybean oil-based biodiesel are capable of flowing well in our cold Minnesota winters.
I hope you enjoy the video. I really appreciate all the positive uplifting messages I have been receiving. It's your kind words that keep me motivated!
I'll see you again next week.
Kenny

Kenny you made me burst out laughing. My husband of 25 years passed away in August. When we ran our construction company, if it was cold out he would sing “We’re having a heat wave….” to the guys 😂😅😂😅😂😅 First time in a while a memory made me smile and laugh and not burst out in tears. Thank you!!
Thank you for sharing that. It brings a huge smile to my face hearing memorys about loved ones. I'm sorry for your loss. It must be so fresh yet. I hope you know your message made the weekend worth it.
Hi Mr Kenny, don't worry the lord will provide...@KennyOfAllTrades

@@KennyOfAllTrades run some Howes diesel fuel treatment during winter to keep your fuel from gelling up.
Hey hey Kenny. I

Now Mr Kenny...I would feel honored and I think most people would, to help you out. FYI if you're in Wisconsin anywhere near me...I would help you in a heartbeat! You bring such joy in your videos...I don't think you realize! You brighten my life! And although you ARE Kenny of all trades...sometimes everyone needs a lil help. I think I speak for all your viewers...we love ya!
Thank you so much for the kind words.
@@KennyOfAllTrades YES. I agree with Mary!! 🤗 🤗 🤗
Absolutely 💯 %
Your amazing, your attitude is refreshing
Kenny, you are amazing! After breaking down you still can see the beauty around you and even sing a little. You fix your truck, the buddy heater and you cook too. Amazing .😅
Oh YES laura, Kenny is MOST AMAZING and WONDERFUL!! 🤗 🤗 🤗
Kenny, you are truly a DREAM COME TRUE!!! 👍🤗👍
Kenny, you are the Bob Ross of camping. I would have been frantic in that situation... you made soup. That's awesome!
Love your videos! We look forward to them every week.
OMG, I was just telling my wife how Kenny reminded me of Bob Ross. His voice is so calming. When he finishes TH-cam he could have a career in audio books. 😁
Kenny is probably an accomplished painter too but is just to shy to show us!
Jason, I know what you are saying, I would have joined YOU! 😅😃😂
@@laurachynoweth5186 I actually think and believe that OUR Kenny is a SINGER, his voice is so smooth when he talks and then when he sings, WOW, watch out, it's actually MINDBLOWING!! 🤗 🤗 🤗

Your soup made me want a wild rice and mushroom soup with heavy cream in it!
You are a pleasure to watch. Whatever is, is. You don't complain about anything, you keep going forward. Thank you. Blessings from Michigan.
I'm 71 years old. My wife and I started camping when we got married 50 years ago and we never stopped. I really enjoy your videos. YOU always seem so up beat all the time. Up until 4 years ago I lived in Minnesota. I now live in Arkansas. Watching you battle that cold brings back a lot of memories. All bad. Hahaha.... You strike me as a really nice person. I will continue to watch your videos. Thanks.
I agree with you leo! 🤗 🤗 🤗
I don’t miss living in Alaska and dealing with subzero temps.
That squeaky snow and a cracked tooth.. oh my... you're impressive.
Great video.. glad you let us know you made it home
Love your positive outlook; nothing ever seems to get you down. We all could use more of that attitude, whether when camping in frigid temps or in our daily lives. Thanks for being an inspiration to all!
I second that motion! I sincerely agree with you david, that would make a wonderful world! 🌎
Nice video as always! Learned a lot about diesel trucks :D
Thanks for the quick response!!!
Good to have a handyman around, and a dentist also. Take care of that tooth. Look forward for your videos.
Glad to see the fix worked
Well I'll be dipped.... The only vehicle I've ever had that started EVERY time, was my Jeep TJ with the inline 4.0 in it. Those engines had their reputation for a reason. Thanks for the video!
vice grip garage lol
Glad you made it home
This a very special person who can set aside the worries of the day…like a broken down truck in the middle of nowhere in freezing conditions….and just go for a walk and come back to a pot of homemade soup and declare that “this is the life!” ❤
I'm impressed how calm you seemed to remain with the uncertainty of the truck running. Thanks for sharing.
Great job getting home! Those diesels can be a bear sometimes.
Man….I would of been stuck out there until help arrived…….😂
I would have been also! 😣
I envy your outlook on life. Nothing gets you down.
Kenny, you’re the only man I’ve ever saw have a vehicle breakdown, and not have a nuclear meltdown 😂! I love to hear the crunching of the snow, and nighttime is the best time for walks! Glad you made it home alright!😊❤️🇨🇦
Good morning Kenny, I just watched your video where your Duramax froze up fuel. I’ve been running big truck for 37 years. I always use number two diesel but up here in New York State all your truck fuel stops run what they call cut diesel it’s number two but they cut it with Carol, I also use an additive which is called Howles. I believe it’s HOWELS if you use it regularly and if you freeze up, they guarantee the total bill. My 550 cat ran two big fuel filters. I had 300 gallons of fuel on board and I used Howels faithfully. It could be 25 below zero I never froze up it’s great stuff. Please pardon my spelling and punctuation. Good luck on your travels.
I see that product on the shelves. I'm going to buy a jug today. Thanks!
The forest looks magical at night. Thank you🦋
It sure does, very pretty!🌲❄🌲❄🌲❄🌲❄🌲❄🌲❄🌲❄🌲❄🌲❄🌲❄🌲❄🌲❄🌲❄🌲❄🌲❄🌲❄🌲❄ ❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄

Hearty folks up there in Minnesota. You made that look easy by the way.
#kennyofalltrades soooo glad you made it home buddy
Another great one as always thanks Kenny ❤💯👍
I’m originally from and live in southern Arizona. Hearing you walk on the snow is like ptsd flashbacks 😂😂 I don’t miss it
Kenny could start a cooking TH-cam channel and it would be a hit lol.
I DEFINITELY agree! 🤗 😀 🤗
So glad you mad eit home brother. Hope you have a good week and get that tooth taken care of as well. Take care!
Your channel is my favorite, I smile all the way through, unless your video is about Bigfoot and you’re walking around in the dark with scary music on!….anyhoo I admire your cleverness, your ability to get out of sticky situations, and your ever present positive attitude. Oh and that Soup! 😋😋
So calm and collected, can't say I would be the same. Love the videos every week. God bless.
Glad that you made it home. You had me concerned.
I’m glad you made it home. Thank you for the video. Stay safe
Wow. Glad you have the knowledge on a fix.
Ah, the joys of diesel during a MN winter.
I hate asking for help too. It's a Midwest thing but sometimes you gotta ask for the help to got-r done.
Wild rice soup...solid choice on a cold day.
I used to live in Randal, MN (straight south of Pillager) and have hunted and hiked the Pillsbury many times. Good choice and close to home.
Coffee is the most important part of any morning project.
Wow, that little heater makes that generator grunt a little.
Nothing worse than Holiday fuel.
Fun vid this week Kenny.
Man... As a fellow Minnesotan, I feel this predicament so much! We're on the temperature upswing at this point, but the sound of the snow crunching gave me flashbacks from the cold snap!
WOW, sounds HORRIBLY COLD!!
Love the snowy forests which always look magical to me. Despite the trials, I love Winter when it looks like Winter.
The sound of footfall on Sub-Zero snow... and the irony that it provides me with warm memories.
When your birthday starts with the number six or seven, some of us have to choose to live vicariously through folks like you.
Nowadays, I get to travel and Camp 350 days a year.
As far as I'm concerned, I won the lottery.
My very best to you and yours.
I also like John Wayne and his horse ! They make a great pair! 😊
YES, Kenny is just INCREDIBLE in all and every way!! 😍 🤗 🤗 🤗
You're a hard worker and a good man Kenny. Good to see that you're enjoying life and nature.
Thank goodness you made it home!!🎉
Crazy man.
I have all kinds of ideas on this but since ive never been in the snow I'll spare you 😂 Glad it all worked out.
Glad you made it back home safe!!
Oh YES, I am also!!! 🤗 🤗 🤗 🤗
Boy, it's cold weather like this that makes me glad. I have a gasser one ton. Thankfully, my truck started every morning of this cold weather.
I agree with you.
Appreciate you're videos bud.
Whaaat??!!! Kenny!!! This video literally could save mine or somebody’s life one day!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 I know these things happen now because you’re kind enough to show when they happen to you, Thankyou for showing is how we can possibly get out of situations that come up like this or checking our brakes etc 🙏🙏🙏Thankyou Kenny 🙏 God bless you 💕💕💕
Dang, Kenny...you're handy! I'm pretty sure I know which end of a screwdriver is which, but I wouldn't want to bet on it. Really fun to watch someone who knows what he's doing...another great video. Thanks! ...get that tooth fixed, heh. 🦷
When I lived in Hibbing, I had an 01 Ram with the 5.9 in it for a while. Thankfully I had stations in town that sold straight #1. I remember that one year, 06-07, I had like four nights where I wouldn’t shut it off due to -60 temps. I don’t miss driving a furnace, even being in South Dakota now!
But I’d quit getting any kind of fuel at Holiday stations. My buddy ran their winter blend in his 7.3 and gelled up every time.
Always enjoy your videos Kenny. My dad and I watch every one.
So glad you made it home Kenny! You sure know what to do to get out of a scary situation! ❤️
Yes Kenny does, and I don't know how he knows what to do, I certainly wouldn't! 🤔
Your positivity is wonderful! I need to see the world around me more like that. Thanks for letting us see you made it home safe.❤ 🙏 You are always in my prayers my friend. Mama Ree and hubby and furbabies
Thank you so much!
You have a very beautiful fur baby there my friend, please give him /her lots of hugs, kisses and belly rubs for me, thank you I sincerely appreciate that! 👍 😀 👍
Thank you again for your adventures. I understand your time is limited. I find solitude in your videos. My sister has been dealing with cancer for 16 years. She’s in stage four with a lot of different health and wellness cycles. She’s been declining more since last June. Your videos and the adventures that you take us all on take us away, sometimes far away, from our daily lives.
Very informative. Blessings everyone 🌱
Hello again, Kenny, two things you might try. First any soup you make, try cooking some bacon and adding it and the drippings to your soup for extra flavor. You don't need much. Years ago, when I had my early Ford F350 with the diesel, I had an old mechanic show me to wrap my filters with an electric battery blanket. I used a 110 volt unit and used an inverter. I could run the inverter from the 12 volts when the truck was running and plug it in to the generator when parked. It never gave off a ton of heat, just enough to keep the temp above gelling the fuel.
Awesome suggestions. I was eating the soup last night and thought......this would be out of this world with bacon. Lol
My anxiety was definitely high on this one. I couldn’t enjoy it until I was sure u made it home. Thank u for continuing to bring joy and happiness to us all and yes ur absolutely right about squeezing out time for urself cos u are worth it and u deserve it sir. My warmest regards to Mandi and d girls. I pray u remain blessed always, AMEN.
Pls schedule dat appointment with d dentist, I’ve learned tooth pain is d absolute worst
Enjoyed your video, you made the best out of a bad situation, don't neglect that tooth, my husband just had a emergency with one a few weeks ago, God bless.
I surely hope that your husband feels better by now! 🤔
@@didibolter9362 he could have died, the infection went into his sinus, because the tooth had a root canal and cap he could not tell it was that tooth till his face and jaw hurt bad, a two hour extraction and surgery, thank God we got it before it was too late.
A good positive attitude, hope you took sunscreen to protect against that blazing heatwave 😊.
As they say, faint heart never won his fair maiden. Well done and really enjoyed. From a very windy 🇬🇧
Great job getting things warmed up and getting home.
Well shoot Kenny, I couldn't sleep so I started watching youtube and saw your channel and here I am 7 hours later and still watching your channel LOL. Thank you for bringing us with you on your weekend adventures. I'm addicted to camping, off grid and bushcraft channels and thanks to you I have a new subscription added to my list. I noticed on your door frame there is a badge and was wondering if you were a police officer or firefighter you have the personality for either. I hope your channel is very successful and many years of adventures ahead. Thanks from a retired Veteran.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the videos. I kinda get a bit of grief from the bush craft and tent camping community. It really gets under their skin when I say I'm camping. Lol, so I really appreciate you giving my videos a chance.
I was a police officer and first responder for years. I left the department in 2022. I now work for the Department of Public Safety in Minnesota. When I left the PD, I was given some momentos. I received a plaque along with a letter of accommodation. I was allowed to keep all my badges and patches. I have the badge above my door to remind me of where I've been and how lucky I am to be out here doing what I love. I don't talk about my career on the channel, but it's something I'm very proud of.
Four years ago, I was taking breaks in my squad watching Taylor Dzaman in his truck camper and Chrome in his van. I wanted that lifestyle soooooo bad! But there was no way I could quit my job and sell all my belongings like so many other full-time TH-camrs. It's taken me 30 years of going to auctions and yard sales to buy tools. There's no way I'm gonna sell them. So I decided to start the channel to show people we can have a full-time job, a mortgage, kids, and still have awesome adventures, just like our favorite TH-camrs. Thanks again for watching!
Between your truck not running, a broken tooth 🦷 ( they can be so painful) and the deep cold 🥶 it was a challenging weekend but you just Rambo it.
Terrific video, Kenny :)
Great vid Kenny. Love MN parks.
I get that you don’t like asking people for help (I’m very similar) - but I’ll bet anytime someone asks you for help you’re all over it. That’s why I would say try and remember that people would be the exact same way about you asking for help. Glad you made it home ok!
Glad you made it home!
Holy cow! I would have freaked-out. So glad you got the truck started. Amazing video!
I would have too, MAJORLY!!
Thank you Kenny for another suspenseful camping video. You are far braver than I would be. Even as a Minnesota 'boy', you wouldn't find me out there in those temperatures camping. "No, Siree Bob!" Thankfully, "We're havin' a heat wave" 🤣and are up to 32F ! Come on spring!
Just another winter adventure in Minnesota
Thanks for sharing 🤙
Thank you for letting us know you made it home safe! What an adventure... a nighttime walk in the woods, below zero temps, vehicle issues. Thankfully you were warm and well fed. Can't imagine having locally grown wild rice. What a special treat!
I’ll watch this when I get home Kenny ❤
Was thinking you might be out this past weekend. No question….you’re certifiable. What you won’t do for us viewers! Lol. Thx.
Glad she came around and you made it. You considered getting rid of the generator some day if you get new power sources...I'd keep it. It was a hero this trip. Cold does things as you very well know. Take care.
Oh DEFINITELY, KEEP the GENERATOR Kenny!! 🌲 🏞 🌲 🌲 🌲
Awesome video Kenny!!! That is scary situation to be in. You are a very talented person. You know what to do in all situations. Staying calm and not panicking is the best thing to do. I’m glad you got it running and made it home. Really enjoyed the video take care be safe buddy.
I totally agree with you craven!
Kenny the best helper you can have when breakdowns occur is the knowledge of how it works, as then you know what to do to make it work. You used what you had available to fix the problem and it worked perfectly…
That meal you prepared looked really good…
Glad you got home safely.
Great video as always! Thanks for taking us along.
Good morning from Godley Texas, I missed you Tuesday, because there was no cell signal where I was camping. Never a dull moment with your adventures. Your cooking segments are phenomenal. I have no respect for people that don't practice, pack it in,and pack it out. You're right about night walks, sights and sounds are totally different than in the day. Gotta be creative when solo camping, superb fix on the truck. Live life to the fullest. Stay safe and happy travels 😎
Thanks for another great video and for showing us you got home safe and sound.
Glad you made it home. Stay warm.😊
I was glad you showed that you got home safe it was a good video even though you had to work on the truck. Have a great week!
First time watcher, and I am so glad to have found you! The calmness in your voice, the way you enjoy everything (even when things break) makes me want to try cold weather camping. Not below freezing, but maybe I'll get there sooner or later. My husband passed away 20 years ago, and I've always tried to be self-sufficient.Thank you for the ideas on fixing gelled up diesel. My little class C isn't as scary to take out in cold weather now!
Blessings to you and your family this year!
Heyy Kenny, nice campsite beautiful scenery, the soup looked delicious, so glad you got the truck started and you made it home, stay safe 😊
Hey Kenny glad you weren't stranded kudos to you knowing what to do
Oh goodness, brother!! You are the coolest cucumber with all of your truck troubles Ihave ever seen, and you made me a little nervous with the firepit so close to the truck!! 😂❤
You are a good man. May God bless you abundantly!
Thank you so much.
Your knowledge is impressive, Kenny! I enjoy your videos so much! I am a former Minnesotan now living in Arizona. Just made a down payment on a Runaway Camper and can't wait to get out there! SKOL!
Kenny you had some trials and tribulations this round. Keep up the great stuff. We look forward to your drops every week.
This man has the best voice ever.
Soup looks yummy!!!
We’re here Kenny! Once again, we were anxiously awaiting your drop! ❤️❤️

Tremendously impressed with your resourcefulness, mechanical abilities and even disposition when things break down. Please take care of that tooth. Hope your dentist is as good at dentistry as you are in truck camper-ing!
New sub. Love the set up. My dream but pulling a fishing boat with it
Glad you made it home, I can see how you got your name… you can fix just about any problem. Always a pleasure to watch.
I'm utterly amazed at your abilities 😮, there isn't anything you can't figure out! Wonderful video, beautiful out there even in frigid cold. That soup looked soooo good. Fresh sautéed mushrooms, I'll face plant in that great Minnesota fare. 😊
Great video as always! Watch you every week. Just glad you got home. Hope you can get that tooth fix. Stay blessed!
Ouch! Cheers from Seattle!
Hello back from Seattle 😅😃😂
Sucks you had to work on your truck besides enjoying your weekend camping.glad you made it home safe..you definitely need to get the fuel problem fixed.thank God you have that little heater..great video.cant wait till next Tuesday.
Always enjoy your adventures, last weekend it got down to 39 degrees in tampa fla, had to put on long pants, tomorrow 82 , back to shorts😊
I always wear shorts, even in the rain, but, if we have snow, then I MUST put on long pants and I hate that!
I dress for MY comfort and strangers see me and they always make rude comments. Hahahaha! 😅 😃 😂
That soup looks yummy! I would have sautéed some crimini’s and potabello mushrooms with the onions. I love mushrooms in a soup. Great video!
Good job on the soup
Glad you made it home, brother! Thanks for showing me a part of this country I’ve never seen!

Glad you made it home safe. As a old farm boy and truck driver you learn about diesel issues. Anyway great learning video for the viewers.
Get some rest this week with all you have to do, Stay safe, see the dentist and take care.
