- Learn how to make a zipper bag featuring a large vinyl window on the front. The inside is fully finished and the edges are bound in bias tape.
I originally made this bag so I could toss my sewing supplies inside and work on a project on the go. But I was packing up my kids for a weekend and Grandma and Pa's house and realized this is the PERFECT toiletry bag! I can put their toothbrushes, toothpaste, and travel size medicine inside and it's easy for Grandma to quickly see what's inside thanks to the clear window.

Hi Whitney, Thank you for the great Project Bag Video. When you get your vinyl, it comes with tissue paper to keep the vinyl from sticking to itself. When you cut the vinyl you should have a piece of vinyl and tissue paper the same size. When sewing put the vinyl side up, the tissue paper will be against the plate and glide right through while being sewn. The needle perforates the tissue paper so you can just tear it off later. Hope this makes sense and helps with the vinyl sticking while sewing 🙂
Yes, I know about using the tissue paper. But for some reason I really don't like pulling tissue paper out of stitches at the end. I can do paper piecing with regular paper, but tissue paper weird me out and makes me anxious.

With a few grommets on one side, this would be a perfect pencil bag to go inside a binder for school!
Nice video. I have sewn for many years so I can honestly say that your directions are concise and clear. And nice links to things like sewing on the binding for those unfamiliar with the process.
Also for sewing on vinyl, my preference would be to use a foot with rollers on it--no sticking. An alternative might be to make a strip of paper like tissue paper and put that between the presser foot and the vinyl; that way you can use any presser foot that suits you.

These are really useful and great gifts. The vinyl can be tricky to sew with at first. I like to put tracing paper or just regular paper on top of the vinyl to stop it from slipping and then it's very easy to rip off after you sewn it.

THANK YOU for this great tutorial. You nailed it and made it so easy to follow. Have made two so far and plan to make 2 dozen more for gifts for my quilting friends. I did quilt the back adding batting, and made them 12" square so layer cake can fit inside, too. You're a great teacher, even when you're not feeling well!

I made two this evening but made a mess with the binding, I don't seem to have the gift of flawless stitching or perfect mitre corners. Will try again as have just realised you said narrow binding 😬 Thanks again for a lovely project 😊

Whitney Sews what gauge/type of vinyl do you use? It looks like there are lots of options, and I can’t get to a store to have a look at them. Is there a source on Etsy or Amazon? I am going to make your zippered tote for my daughter in law, and it would be cool to make one of the vinyl pouches for her out of the same material.
I'm honestly not sure what gauge mine is. It was a remnant that I found at Joanns several years ago. If I had to guess it's probably somewhere in the middle of the thicknesses, not as thick as a clear table covering but not so thin it could be torn easily. Sorry I don't have more info on that. Is the zipper tote you're making the one with the PDF? If so did you get it downloaded by clicking the purple button after purchase? If not send me an email and I can get it sent to you.

Sew cute!! I was reading today on sewing with vinyl that you can put a piece of of tissue paper on top of the vinyl to make it easier to sew.

I think the mickey fabric came from Joanns several years ago.
After making several window masks I'm going to use the remainder 8g vinyl to make these bags. Do you have a link to the binding-bias tape? What exactly do I buy? Thank you and stay well.
Where did I miss the needle size?
Turning over a 1/4 inch is not always easy for all of us. I saw recently that someone took some cardboard (I used cardstock) and drew lines at 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch from the edge. When ironing, it helped to know the exact width, especially when turning over the 1/4 and the 1/2 inch to make a nice edge.

At least 9 inches long. It's fine if it's longer; can be trimmed.
