    In this video we review the Nest x Yale smart lock 1 year later and cover the features of the lock, how it works and if it's the right fit for your home. I've had a Nest Smart lock for over a year on my home and have enjoyed being key free and the smart lock features that make managing your home security easier.
    My favorite features of the Nest smart lock are using the keypad instead of a key and the auto lock feature. With the auto lock feature on the nest lock, the lock can automatically lock the door even if you forget so you don't need to worry about it.
    With the Nest x Yale lock you can easily assign codes to guests, dog walkers or contractors and set schedules and times when the access codes are valid. You can also control the Nest x Yale smart lock directly from the Nest app and lock or unlock the smart lock from your phone.
    The Nest x Yale lock works on the same app as the Nest Thermostat and does integrate with other Nest devices on the Nest app.
    If you have a compatible Google Home or Google Assistant you can also use Google voice commands to lock the Nest x Yale lock with your voice.

    Hey man, recently discovered your channel and i really appreciate the videos! Do you have any suggestions or guidance on condo buildings and their street entrances? I live in a condo, and there is (only) one other unit.
    I already have the Yale lock for our unit’s entry door. But that is inside. Do you know of any work arounds / integration with an intercom system. I’m not interested in the ability of using the intercom with Nest / google, but the ability to power a nest doorbell with it + some way to remotely unlock / “buzz” someone in.
    I know I’d have to confirm approval with my neighbor and property manager. Thanks again!

    What about fingerprints on the lock. Do they show up easily? I guess the plus is you can make the code 4-8 digits long so makes it harder for someone to guess by seeing what numbers were pressed.

    • @FluffyGrl
      @FluffyGrl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have this lock, and it's really fingerprint resistant. But to your point, there are 4 of us in our house, each of us w/our own code, so even if fingerprinting were an issue, a code would be really hard to guess.

    Is there any advantage to having the Nest integration other than having everything be in the Nest app? I'm wondering if there are any advantages to having it be Nest vs going with August for more integration with other apps (ITTT, etc). Thanks!

    • @Ndlelex
      @Ndlelex ปีที่แล้ว

      I can think of two:
      First, if you happen to have the Nest Secure alarm system, you are able to disable that alarm system by unlocking the lock using either any predefined codes or the Home/Nest app. I can tell you from experience, it is a nifty, streamlined feature that serves the purpose well.
      Secondly, the lack of that auto-unlock feature which we find in the Yale August actually bolsters security for the Yale Nest, if it forgoes convenience in so doing. Now, this is a divisive and highly subjective issue, of course, but that is an advantage to some and a deal-breaker to others.

    • @OneHourSmartHome
      @OneHourSmartHome  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A good quality stainless knob will work even if it says it's an interior knob. However commercial grade knobs will last longer outdoors and are typically heavier duty I recommend this: amzn.to/36Xpkkh but there are also less expensive options like this that will work: amzn.to/3jV6n5r you just might need to replace it 5 years down the road.

      No help with this lock. But an easy quick fix for your family, they make little magnetic sensor alarms. You can put them on your doors / windows (even cabinets , fridge..., or garbage cans with lids to keep your pets from getting into garbage.) It makes a loud pitch alarm when the door or window is opened. They are super cheap too! Hope this helps.

    Very informative - the Yale lock features seem great but are there any other devices that work with Nest?
    e.g. is there any kind of nest-compatible relay or something so rather than driving an actual lock it closes/opens contacts (e.g. to operate electric gate controllers or strike latch etc) - I'm finding it really hard to find a doorbell-type camera with two way audio and ability to open gate or similar without having to leave the app, operate, then go back into the app... any ideas ? :)
    Could probably modify the lock to almost achieve something similar but it seems a bit of a waste.

    • @OneHourSmartHome
      @OneHourSmartHome  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, it's a good lock. However I prefer the Yale August lock:amzn.to/2CZwica or the Yale Nest lock. The Schlage encode: amzn.to/2BKPwS0 has a backup hard keyway if that is something you're looking for. In my opinion the Yale August lock has the most features because it integrates with online short term rental platforms but all 3 are high quality products.

      Try either one of these 2 things: 1. Check to make sure that the deadbolt can fully extend into the frame side of the door. If not use a drill bit or chisel to make the hole deeper. 2. If the lock is catching on the door frame lock hole mounting plate you can either try moving the plate or use files: amzn.to/3otQ5Cn to slightly enlarge the mounting plate. Typically it doesn't take much filing to get the lock working smoothly with a miss aligned door, and sometimes even beveling the edges of the frame hole locking plate will solve the problem. I've also used cutting bits: amzn.to/2VHCkUm like these to enlarge the hole before.

    Problem with the auto lock feature and remote lock is that the deadbolt needs to be perfectly aligned with the corresponding hole. Doesn't work with my door because of the weatherstripping, you need to pull the door against the weatherstripping in order for that to work, otherwise the motor will try a couple times and stop, leaving the door unlocked.

    • @jeffhong9935
      @jeffhong9935 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    those auto locks dont work well where the door frame expands and contracts due to the season and humidity and will not lock because the deadbolt hole and deadbolt get slightly misaligned. in that case you need one with a turning mechanism so you can pull on the door handle and then turn the deadbolt from the outside to set the lock

    • @thefantassy
      @thefantassy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      you got ripped off my friend, sorry about that. The white connector you mention just acts like a bridge between your wifi and the lock so that the lock doesn't have to connect directly to wifi and therefore helping with battery life. The box has to say something like NEST X YALE + NEST CONNECT meaning that the Nest connect actually comes in the package otherwise it won't.

      You need the nest connect bridge: amzn.to/2IoyBI0 as shown in the picture link with the lock. I've seen them available on ebay or the nest website. The nest connect bridge is the device which connects the nest lock to the internet and allows you to change the pass codes.

      I never lock the lower key lock, I just use the deadbolt with the smart lock. However you could replace the lower lock with a passage set like this: amzn.to/31u3Kjr that doesn't have a ket if you want to prevent the lower lock from accidentally locking. Thanks for watching and the comment.

      @@OneHourSmartHome Hi-I've had this issue too. Installed two years ago, worked great, but needed to change "owner" of Google Home account from my construction contractor to myself (he should have set it up that way to begin with!) Anyway, the lock would no longer connect to nest connect through the Nest app. I've spent probably 60 hours on this problem including several LONG phone calls to Yale & Nest customer support lines. I was sent a new Nest Connect unit and new Yale lock. No dice. The end result? They say it's a "known issue" and I will have to borrow and ANDROID phone to set up as many times it does not work with iPhones. (????!!!) If you google this issue you will find it all over the internet. I've tried 5 different iphones and everything in this article support.google.com/googlenest/thread/16732706?hl=en but so far nothing works! I have invested in the Nest Thermostat, Hello Camera, and 3 Google home units so I'd really love any input/help you can provide :) All other devices online and connected to the Nest Connect and the Google Home app, BTW. Yale lock works by setting codes manually but I cannot operate the lock remotely, which really sucks because it's an Airbnb rental unit. Sigh....Sorry for the rant :)
