Stam Fine Reviews looks at the 80s classic Magnum P.I. Thomas Magnum (Tom Selleck) was a private investigator based on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Magnum lived in a guesthouse on the estate of a famous author, Robin Masters, all the while while under the watchful eye of the estate manager, Higgins (John Hillerman). Magnum often leans on his war buddies T.C (Roger E. Mosley) and Rick (Larry Manetti) for help in his detective work.
Created by Glen A. Larson and Donald P. Bellisario, Magnum p.i. ran for eight seasons between 1980 and 1988 and a remake series ran for five seasons. It's the show where a guy in a baseball cap drives someone else's Ferrari around Hawaii.

Till today (2024) there is no other series which can replace Magnum PI. The whole cast are great including Zeus and Apollo. Its stories are natural and funny too unlike other series whereby the hero is so serious. 💖 love you guys. From Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Yes, this compared quite favorably with many of its competitors. Take "Knight Rider" for an example, which didn't start airing until 1982 and was cancelled by 1986. The Mustache makes all the difference.

I loved Magnum as a kid. And bought the series on DVD as an adult. I was pleasantly surprised that it still held up. And sometimes for nostalgia's sake I will watch it. The episode of him treading water and thinking of his dad is still pretty powerful. And the ending of Did you see the sunrise.

My group of high school friends used to get together and watch this show, even after we'd all gone off to different universities. One of us would tape the shows and we'd do a marathon viewing of several episodes together. A couple of those friends are no longer around and whenever I hear the Magnum PI theme tune I think of them.

I watched like many others, from Season 1 Ep1, every week it was aired on my tv station. The anticipation after 6 days, always heightened the watching experience (same with Miami Vice). Something I dearly miss these days. Nowadays its all about binge episode watching of modern serials.

I used to watch Magnum as a kid and it was one of the shows I rewatched all the way through when Netflix had it. It holds up fairly well because of the characters and main cast. For a few seasons it seemed that they liked to start out with a psychological/supernatural thriller atypical of the normal formula (Sharon Stone features in one).

Something that links the characters, no matter how much they sometimes bickered, they were all veterans.
While he does impose on his friends, they begrudgingly live for 'the juice' they get from Magnum's adventures.

It really did everything. A great ensemble cast with a super charming lead who didn't overpower anyone else but was always at the heart of everything. You can see Bellesario's touch all over it in being character first and then play with it. It really was a magic bit of TV and I really, really enjoyed releaning what made it so special from you!

Really well done. I loved Magnum PI, and never missed an episode (in fact, Thursdays was my favourite day of the week, as I used to watch Magnum, followed by Simon & Simon, followed by Hill Street Blues). Your observations and information are spot on, only one minor quibble: in the episode "Going Home" Magnum does not "reconnect with his grandfather" as you stated, he goes home to attend his grandfather's funeral. The character you show is his step father, who he had long disliked. And I thoroughly agree with you with regards to your praise for the last episode, as in my opinion it is among the best last episodes of any series. Anyway, keep up the great work.

That was the only season of Las Vegas I watched because of Selleck. That reunion episode was a great one. I also like to think the “where are they now” expositions of those characters are what really happened to Rick, TC and Higgins after the end of M, p.I.

  • @Nifter71
    @Nifter71 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Paraphrasing a description I read somewhere... Selleck's Magnum could be awkward and goofy, but also determined - and even ruthless. He could be immature and short-sighted, but could also exhibit wisdom and understanding. He was an average guy, down on his luck, yet he was able to enjoy the trappings of a luxury lifestyle (without the risk of being corrupted by it, or of becoming bored). He was relaxed and tolerant, but always principled. He was generally sensitive, but could also be petty. Women usually found him attractive, but he didn't take really advantage of it - other than some occasional flirting. He was always leeching off his friends, but they always ultimately remained loyal to one another. He was generally humble, and could even be desperate, but always retained his dignity and pride. He was often messy, but could scrub up good when required. He liked sports and trashy cultural ephemera, but could appreciate fine wine and beautiful art. He was ill-disciplined - an often disorganized improviser, and yet also an effective soldier. He was charming, sociable and chatty, but also a loner who liked to be at one with nature. He liked to eat junk food, but also loved swimming, running, & canoeing etc. etc. etc...
In short, Magnum was a brilliant everyman, whose lifestyle was a somehow accessible fantasy that offered nearly everybody something to connect with. And all of those seeming contradictions somehow made sense because of Selleck's portrayal. Magnum seemed as courageous and cowardly, as clever and stupid, as regular joe or as charming hero as any of us might feel, from one day to the next, because Selleck made him seem so. Magnum had its dodgy episodes, but Selleck's relaxed charisma and ease with the character usually made even the duff episodes tolerable. So props to Tom Selleck - for once, the iconic status of an 80s Tv character is backed by much more than just a handful of simple signifiers!
btw I also read that Selleck felt bad that his massive popularity meant his paycheck vastly outweighed that of his co-stars, and so he bought 3 of them Porsches, plus 200 gold rolexes for the crew after the final shoot...
PS Higgins was a huge contributor to the success of the entire set-up IMO, and his character provided an essential counter-balance / foil to Magnum's. Massive props also to John Hillerman for the performance (notwithstanding his atrocities/appearances as his own half-brothers), and for that exceptional accent!

    • @johnneails9747

I have this show on DVD, have been a fan since the reruns, in the afternoons, that was were i really discovered it, we did not have cable while this was on, and i was an ABC watcher as well, if i were visiting at my Grandparents house it might have been on, or later watching the re-runs, but my favorite thing about this show, was the car of course and the TEAM RINGS, always wanted one, and finally did on my 40th Birthday, and bought a gold version, much like the one on screen, and i am on a fan page on FB. bought the DVD'S two years ago to put in my collection....and yes i have been watching the re-boot...(sigh)..it means well, but it was made during all this rebooting madness, and character changing, Jay Hernandezes acting is stiff as a bored, no emotion what so ever every reaction is the same plays it to low key, it is in the spirit of the original, but it has no heart, no comedy, no payoff, no stakes, no mystery, it plays out to cookie cutter, i like it only because, they at least all wear the ring, and T.C. has the same chopper, that tour company actually exists still. thanks for this review..(R.I.P...Higgins, Michelle, T.C., Carpenter).....................

Best show ever! You never knew what you were gonna get with each episode. Was it going to be goofy and fun or dark and serious? It was always going to be pretty good though. I mean who wouldn't want to be Magnum? Ex-Special Forces, lived in Hawaii rent free in a perfect compound with it's own beach and tennis court. He got to drive a Ferrari around. His best buds had a chopper and a country club that he could exploit. Dude had it made!

I thought Magnum started out as a spin-off of his Lance White character on Rockford, but they moved it to Hawaii, and Selleck didn't want the character to be rich. (He married a rich girl in his first appearance, but she had died by his second.) I've always thought they should have brought Magnum back for a few guest appearances on NCIS, since that's where he went (except it was NIS at the time). But instead they had Dinozo being a fan of the Magnum series. And Magnum 2.0 should have been Lilly following in her father's footsteps, not a reboot. (I would have accepted it, if they had an episode where Selleck was the real Magnum, and the new series was based on a book series written by Higgins.)

The Magnum Ice Cream, still a massive hit with women was invented in 1988, the year that Magnum PI stopped being made, so it wouldn't be after the ice cream, would it.
13:25 "Chumley", that's an interesting way to mangle the surname Cholmondley. You've got to love the septic tanks and their phobia of English all the time.

Magnum P.I. (1980-88) was rad. Had no idea it ran that long or that there was a remake series that ran for five seasons. Thanks. 👍

Thanks for another great ep Stam! I would have loved to see Selleck as Indiana Jones - Harrison Ford was still brilliant, but it's a shame it didn't happen =^)

Selleck did a fine job as an old-school matinee hero in High Road to China, and Lassiter. Well worth a watch if you’ve never seen them. Quigley Down Under is another.

Wow, grew up in the 80's and watched Magnum P.I. religiously - and never knew there was a season 8! Literally thought it ended with him walking off into the clouds of heaven for the last 40 years! I'm guessing as I live in NZ, they probably aired Season 8 either after my bedtime, or in some other weird spot where nobody knew about it. Now I'm going to have to track down season 8!

The lead for Bergerac became the original lead for Midsomer Murders, which I really got into during a long COVID winter. I tried to watch Bergerac but it was almost as if they didn't know how to tell a story on television at that point.

Bergerac was top tier. His relatives where somehow connected to every crime on the Channel Islands.

I lived in Hawai'i while this show was in production. My Dad got to meet him. I'm not sure if it was multiple times or just once. That part is kind of fuzzy. My Dad was Security Police at Hickam at the time.

  • @ashroskell

I dunno’ why I never really clicked with this show, even though I sorta’ liked it, and the star, and the concept, (sort of a Hawaiian Banacheck) of a wealthy guy who’s solving crimes with the home help on the periphery of the action, etc. It was probably more to do with TV schedules clashing in the days before streaming and video recorders were yet to become commonplace?
Maybe I’ll go back over the back catalogue? I did that with James Garner’s The Rockford Files a couple of years ago and the early series was quite brilliant! Especially for its era. Would love to see your take on Jim Rockford?
EDIT: Ohh . . . See, I assumed, because of the car and the butler, that Magnum was rich. See? I don’t know the show, but maybe I should? I do love nostalgia TV these days.

I loved this show and would tune in every week as a kid. I'm British too from the cold, dark, wet North West.
So seeing this and Miami Vice, set in magical hot countries with fast cars, sunshine and a lifestyle I could only dream of was so eye opening.
Then I grow up, have friends who live in these places and they tell me the truth of real life there. I still don't care, I would move there in a heartbeat.
Fantastic review and you earned a new sub. I have looked back to see if you covered Miami Vice, but couldn't see it.
I rewatched that a few years ago and it holds up so well.... Bar a couple of "dark seasons". So much music, stars and a great ending.
    Thank you mate
