I live and work in tourism in Croatia and would like to share a few tips to anyone visiting for the first time - from a locals point of view!
    1. Tap water is clean and drinkable, you don't need to buy expensive water
    2. Tipping is recommended. If you like the service leave a tip. If you don't then don't. I'm not a tourist and I always leave a tip if I liked the service. Actually most croatians function that way.
    3. Croatians are extremly friendly, laidback and very proud of the culture. And you will experience great hospitality if you are respectful. Educate yourself in advance about the place you are traveling to.
    4. Croatia is not cheap and is not a resort-type of destination.
I have met a lot of tourists without any knowledge about the destination they are visiting and they were expecting a 'resort' type of vacation like in Greece and Turkey where everybody is treating you like a God and everything is cheap. This is really not the case.
Croatia is beautiful and is great for you if you are interested in nature and getting to know Croatian lifestyle, cuisine and culture.
And the most important thing is - just take it easy and relax! Or as we say in Dalmatia - pomalo. :)

what he wants to say is: that if you r just a tourist you dont feel the pain of this country. You dont know how much they work and how they get paid if they get paid. theres a lot of shit in croatia but on the coast you dont see it as a "tourist". yes on the one side it is beautiful but just if you have money. And money is a thing here. you dont earn enough to pay all the expensiv prices. with 2000$ in month it wouldnt be a problem but with 400-600 € it will. but yeah, enjoy Croatia!

I live in Northern Ireland and we welcome Tourists
There's currently a huge influx into the province due to the popularity of Game of Thrones
We are polite enough not to lecture our visitors about our bloody past nor do we resent them if they don't care to know about it, but there are guided tours to key sites of The Troubles if tourists which to avail themselves
Regarding cost: The prices on our coast are the same as inland
Regarding income: The locals here know that education is key to bettering their own personal income

I’m Italian and I love Croatia, I have been so far 6 times, of which twice to the capital Zagreb and the rest to the seaside, I’ll definitely be going again. Talking about the coast…as a whole it is very beautiful, clear waters everywhere but at the same time rocky beaches everywhere, so make sure you bring your sandals with you.
You’ll find nice architecture and nice food at prices which are still overall cheaper compared to, say, Italy or France.
Accommodation-wise, apartments are plentiful everywhere and they offer very good value for money. Like anywhere else though, try to avoid going to Croatia in July & August if you can, as everything becomes more expensive. Enjoy your trip!

Maaaan, no way, I just got your video recommended and I am from Rovinj :D
The big pedestrian street is actually Rovinj's main street and it's called Carrera.
Kiosks are usually little bit more expensive than markets, and there's plenty of markets in the old city, you just have to ask someone for the nearest one.
Church on the hill is called Saint Eufemia and it's Rovinj's main church with a interesting story behind it (you'll have to look it up yourself, I'm not gonna spoil it for everyone). You can even pay a small amount to walk up the church's bell tower and have a nice overview of the whole city.
Place with the harbour is Rovinj's main square.
You actually missed whole lot of beaches while walking through Park Punta Corrente. You missed a newly renovated beach right beneath Croatia's best hotels - Monte Mulini and Lone, and a lot of smaller beaches located on the outline of the park Punta.
You can basically just walk straight from the main square following sea and you will visit 70% of Rovinj's beaches and there's really plenty of them. I would say it would take you about 2 or 3 hours to walk straight through all of them.
If you want your food to be even cheaper, there are several supermarkets at the entrance of the city (5 min walk from where you stayed) like Lidl and Konzum.

    • @CSengineer.

10:50 most probably they are playing accordion by themselves and singing folk songs. In Croatia it's very common for people to gather up and someone will bring accordion and play, while others will sing "narodnu glazbu (folk music)". Of course all that with rakia, or šljivovica.

It is not realistic to compare prices between Budapest and Rovinj in the middle of the summer season and a city located on the Adriatic coast.Ako are more like cheap prices should you go in Osijek, Varazdin or the like (generally Slavonia) where prices are ~ 50% less, instead going to the sea in the middle of the summer season and compare it with Albania, Bosnia etc ... doesnt make any sence

I rarely make some comments on You tube , but I was trigger with this video .
Rovinj is one of the top locations, and you are in a Nice, France type of place .
The place is not expensive in a price/quality ratio, but it's not a real destination for backpackers on a budget .
And its silly to make any parallel with eastern Europe or Albania for that matter.
And one tip for a tip , if you are on budget, don't tip 10 kunas, save it for another slice of pizza. ( no big deal in Croatia )

Tipping is not expected here. As for the water, carry sturdy water bottle or two and fill them from public water
fountains which exist in every city. Buy your food in grocery store or open air farmers market. Some will barter with you. Prices are directly proportionate to one's proximity to the sea. Islands are the most expensive. Just imagine how the locals feel...they pay the same prices yet they make maybe about 1/5 th of typical western pay check. If you want to travel cheaply see Serbia, Rumania, Bulgaria or Albania.

Good question. It depends on the situation. In this case there were a lot of people around so I was a little more concerned. So what I did was I attached my daypack (using the side straps on it) to one of the umbrella things sticking up out of the sand, so that someone couldn't just grab it and run. Also check out this video: th-cam.com/video/R0Al1epNziw/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for the link. I just checked it out---great, simple and practical tips to reduce the chances for loss and theft. I noticed you have a video on how to avoid theft in hostels as well. I love your down-to-earth approach to travel ---a dip into the sea, a cold beer and a simple but tasty dinner---budgeted luxuries and authentic experiences that those of us without the generous trust funds set up by wealthy family can achieve if the spirit of travel moves us..

It's expensive for us to travel to Europe. Well, its all relative but really our country is so huge we can see most topographies without leaving our own borders. If air travel were cheaper, more of us would travel abroad to be honest. I know I would. Would love to visit Europe one day.

during your travels, what is the best method for access to money? I bank with Citibank, which is a very large international bank, is ATM access available?

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  7 ปีที่แล้ว

I use my Wells Fargo visa debit card to withdraw from ATMs. It works everywhere basically (some ATMs don't accept international cards, but you can tell by the symbols on the machine). The important thing is you will need to inform your bank which countries you are going to, or else your account might get locked and you will then have to call your bank to straighten it out.

Town you are referring in this video is Rovinj with population of 14 290 people. Rovinj has, besides the fish processing industry, just at the edge of the town (Kanfanar) a cigarette industry, TDR factory employing around 3000 people supplying most of the Central and SE Europe with various kinds of tobacco cigarettes.
      Does this answer your question?

They are usually on the outskirts or little bit inland. After all, why waste prime real estate? Though, I grew up in Labin (Istria) and it had about same population as Rovinj and a coal mine straight in the middle of the city. They ended up closing it because the downtown was sinking in. People eventually got other jobs in the interior. Also, an interesting factoid, Istria is the only county of Croatia that pays more taxes to the government then what it gets back, in effect supporting all other freeloading counties. Kind of like California supporting all the red flyover states who then vote Republican, even though California is a liberal state.
