Absolutely yes. She was only on half of the 48 episodes over the 2 seasons but she definitely brought the show to a new level with her crotchety attitude.
Judith Lowry died at 86. Cloris Leachman is now 94. Googled Judith recently and noticed she had a lot of children, six boys and three girls. Most of them died rather young...in their 60s and 70s. Her daughter died in November 2020. She was also 86. EDIT March 2021: R.I.P. Cloris. Give Judith a big hug for us.
With 9 children, she must have a ton of grandchildren. She was born in 1890 - her kids were probably all born in the 20s and 30s so likely not many are left.
My favorite episode was when they were holding a seance and mother Dexter blurts out "I can't see a damn thing". I still remember it 45 years later. Hahaha 😆😆😆

Yes they did rule the airwaves with those wonderfully funny and witty TV sit-coms and drama series. CBS was about the only channel we watched back in the 70’s. There were a few shows that we watched on ABC and NBC, but not many. Those were the days when Americans had good TV shows to watch and they had amazing writers. The stuff that’s put out these days that they try to call sit-coms or drama TV series are not fit to watch! I did love to watch American Horror Story up until the last 2 seasons. I didn’t care for the season dealing with thr Trump/Clinton election either. I just refuse to watch these modern shows that are pushing the extreme leftist propaganda!!! Give me the classic TV shows like these!
Mother Dexter was a riot as was Henry Jones as the weary Judge Dexter, setting up the funny comeback lines from Mother Dexter perfectly. They both stole the Phyllis series.
Judith Lowry's final role of her career was the one she was born to play. She also did a similar kind of role on an episode of "Maude". She absolutely made the show better, as did Carmine Caridi and John Lawlor in Season 2. For some reason though, it wasn't enough to make the show last longer. Judith died before it was over but thankfully she was around to make a number of episodes way better.
MTM also had the best writers and especially directors. These were the days when directors really crafted a show, as opposed to now where shows are made by 75 sundry assorted “producers.” This is the opinion of Jay Sandrich btw. This episode directed by Stuart Margolin, another alumnus of the MTM directors’ school, famous for playing Angel on The Rockford Files. Anyway the sight gag at the beginning is priceless. Worthy of “Police Squad!” 😅

I think Jane Rose won a TV Land "Best TV Mother-In-Law" at some point, wayyyy posthumously. She died only a couple years after "Phyllis" ended, sadly, and she wasn't that old. Henry Jones was legendary, and outlived her by 20 years or so.
Mother Dexter was the funny one. Phyllis was funny when she'd fuss with Rhoda, on the Mary Tyler Moore Show. I was age 14 when this show premierred. I didn't watch every ep of this show when new, I thought some of them were boring.
No where as good as MTM, Bob Newhart, or Rhoda, the office comedy bits are boring. But the scenes at home with the family, ESPECIALLY mother Dexter. Hilarious. Long before Sophia Petrillo, there was Mother Dexter.

CBS really kicked ass with MTM Rhoda, this show, MASH, bob Newhart etc. They were the KING of the sit com.
