Hey Spirit. Is it really worth 'milling' deer? I play a lot of Arabia and sometimes the pack only has three deers. I always mill them but sometimes I wonder if the 100 wood cost is worth reduced walk time for the 420 food.

I admit I won't be doing any of this, but I have a suggestion for an alternative to the sequence shown, which to me seems a little bit simpler and faster to execute (though you might lose the opportunity to fix things if the boar isn't in the ideal place just yet). Instead of: -Select villagers -Put into TC -Attack boar (twice) from TC -Set ungarrison to boar -Ungarrison (will attack boar) I would do: -Select villagers -Attack boar and put into TC* -Attack from TC* -"Go back to work" (they will go back to attacking the boar) *These steps could have two variations: -You actually let villagers attack once from outside, then immediately put them into TC, attack once again from inside, finally "back to work" to finish killing boar. This makes it faster because when you garrison/ungarrison the villagers their reload time is reset so it's going to be one volley of arrows after the other, with little delay. Now, if you do that with just 6 vills, the boar will be left with 3 hp after all that (75 - [6 + 18 + 30 + 18]), so you have to set the luring vill to take the final blow, or else the 6 vills will take the time to reload and fire once more. -Take advantage of the lag and do both commands (attack and garrison) very fast, they won't have time to attack boar from outside, but will be already set to it when sent "back to work". Attack twice from TC and proceed as noted. It's not as fast, but it's safer if the lag is bad. Well... it does sound complicated when I write it down like this, but in practice it's quite simple.
Consider also that you can fire from any incoming direction thus reducing extra idle time of villagers having to move in proper position to let the incoming villager pass by
Small update for DE Since now you only need 1 shot to lure the boar the hp will be at 72 and instead of taking only 13 arrows (13 times 5 equals 65 which is ok given the old boar hp was 69), you can actually give him 14 arrows (14 times 5 is 70 and the boar should have 72 hps) This means you can actually make the usual 6 villagers (which I suggest putting into a control group) shoot the boar giving him 12 arrows, but you can as well garrison the luring villager if he's low and the extra arrow won't kill the boar. OR you can actually garrison 7 villagers and make them shoot twice

One question that I would like to see answered some time, is regarding destroying defensive structures. I know you have gone over tower efficiency and petard efficiency, but I would like to know more about towers. Notably, how many of a unit type does it take to destroy a tower (ie finding a tower when rushing) how many will be left over if I put more than the minimum on the tower, etc. Also castles too, since I never quite know how many soldiers to deploy against a castle.

Thank you for this, 15 months later I use this every game. It has become so consistent that I always loom first and lure with my first produced villager (#4) given that I find the first boar in time, which I almost always do (mongols). 3 TC volleys from the 4 villagers (incl. #5) working on returning, rally, ungarrison, voila. I will usually then set the rally point to the unfinished sheep for #6 to polish off. If I don't find the boar right away, I will send a second sheep from scouting to the TC and lure with my #6 villager instead, opting for 2 volleys from the 6 villagers working on returning. This leaves the unfinished sheep with a lot more meat, however. Given that I find the second boar right away as well, I will immediately go and lure the second with #7 just to get it done and out of the way. I will split them 4/3 on the second boar/first boar then begin on my 7 remaining sheep after they are both done. This spreads out periods of intensive micro in the first few minutes of the game, making idle scout/villager time a thing of the past. Spirit you're the best!
Problem with that is the decay of food. Only 4 villagers carving boar meat wastes 20% of the meat. See another Spirit of the Law video on which to finish off first, sheep or boar.
I just do a lure screen. Your villager can fit through the other villagers while the boar can't.(if positioned properly) This results in you boar running in a circle around your villagers in the tc zone.
Damaging boars with the tc is a useful thing to bear in mind for nomad, when boars may well your best initial source of food, and it is important to gather from them when you still have only 3 villagers.
It is a great accomplishment just to have AOE2 vidoes and make all of them great! Nice job my friend. If you garrison the villager that is luring when the shepards are firing at it, the boar will stand in the same spot idle for a couple secs usually giving you enough time to kill it usually, if not you take at most 1 hit to a vill

Why would you press I to pop up a flag and then right click the boar when you could just right click the boar? Isn't pressing I redundant and giving you more work? I am not sure, but right clicking in a town center full of people on a unit (like the boar) doesn't result in just firing the arrows on that unit? I don't think the rally point can be put on units by right cliking in case of buildings firing arrows, because it's used in simply throwing the arrows over that direction.
You can have the 6 villagers fire, garrison and fire, and ungarrison and fire in less time than it takes to shoot 3 regular shots. so that might make it less risky and even faster.

I think I've got an almost fool proof boar lure technique you might want to try if you haven't already :D I'm sure it's probably been done before and I've even seen a video of you doing a similar thing with the scout in another video but here goes - Basically you set your villagers up in the "split" formation (manually of course since they're villagers) , then all you do is run the lurer/lurrer/laura through the middle and attack as soon as they're through, the other villagers come together automatically and the boars path finding does the rest. The more villagers you have on the flanks the further the boar has to go around. The good thing about this is there's no garrisoning or hotkeys needed, lag doesn't affect it (well it does but it makes it more effective), micro is minimal to none and 99 times out of a hundred the lawer only takes that one initial hit. It's probably not as quick as the tc tactic but I think it's more noob friendly. Anyways keep up the good work man I would like to play you one day, preferably before you reach a 22k elo :D

I used to do this exact thing, but it looks like the boar no longer spoils from tc arrows nor do killing sheep with scouts etc. in current DE version. Havent seen any videos on this yet, maybe people are unaware of this?
I have not really played AOE2, I played the Star Wars copy. In that one I capture the sheep equivalent and place them in a building to generate food, is that not possible in AOE2? I have not seen any of your videos about that kind of thing? Is it possible but just very not viable or something? CAN MATH HELP SHOW US THE LIGHT?
spiritofthelaw can you do a short video on time? how long is a trigger second? how long is an AOE year? when a unit is created in X seconds, is it literally that many seconds of play time, from the moment you click, assuming no lag? would this be a pointless video?
A question, why dont u just shoot once with the luring villager? shooting 2 arrows is a bit risky as boar will follow u after the first shot, so your villager standing there and shooting another can be risky i thought?
You need to shot two arrows or else the boar wont follow you all the way down to the TC. He would just follow the villager a short distance and then turn arround.
I think this is probably safer for me, because I'll somehow mess up the lure and get two villagers killed if I have to use the mouse more than the keyboard. Hotkeys are best.

That would be great to c a chinese civilisation aoe2 review sometime soon. Boar strategy is good,but i think it"s not worth it,cause in this way u save under 2 seconds of gametime and risk too much. Better way to kill boars is to send a single villager after boar and at his 75% max range shoot a single arrow at a boar,after that it will follow you to the town center without dealing any damage to villager,before towncenter 6 villagers will kill it with 2 shots each,the boar will follow the first villager all the time so if u run behind villagers the boar will follow and slow down while trying to run around 6-unit group. It always works and has no resource losses if 6 villagers were recently collecting food from sheep. So all villagers stay at their full HP and the time loss is only 1,5-2 seconds per boar at most.
This early in the game there usually isn't that much that needs your attention. You're just alternating between moving your scout, queuing up veils, and micros get vils. Plus you're probably going to be watching your boar lure anyway so that you don't lose a vil.
I think you should drop off the sheep meat before shooting the boar, right? Also just garrisoning the one villager and letting the rest shoot usually works quite well and keeps everyone as high HP.
+mdilligaf Doesn't matter in HD. You can go from shepherds to hunters without dropping the meat and versa. I'm pretty sure the same goes for berries, shore fish, farms but don't quote me on that last bit.
I usually just attack move the boar. A little trick I picked up from DOTA. Means I move my group of hunters a little way towards the approaching boar, shoot it and move towards the TC a bit, shoot it again move again and shoot it again and it dies on the perfect spot.
Or you can lure it with your villager right under the TC, garrison the villager and kill the boar when you like to. It usually doesn't run back immediately so you have a lot of time.
Acsabi44 It may not, it sometimes freezes and gets killed. Anyway, I don't think it's a big deal to lose HP on vills, you send the injured ones to farms around the TC anyway.

I have also used my scout to attack the boar as it is being led back by the villager to take health down before I get under the TC

I used to do this exact thing, but it looks like the boar no longer spoils from tc arrows nor do killing sheep with scouts etc. in current DE version. Havent seen any videos on this yet, maybe people are unaware of this?
I have not really played AOE2, I played the Star Wars copy. In that one I capture the sheep equivalent and place them in a building to generate food, is that not possible in AOE2? I have not seen any of your videos about that kind of thing? Is it possible but just very not viable or something? CAN MATH HELP SHOW US THE LIGHT?

spiritofthelaw can you do a short video on time? how long is a trigger second? how long is an AOE year? when a unit is created in X seconds, is it literally that many seconds of play time, from the moment you click, assuming no lag? would this be a pointless video?
Also top China Player Mr Yo does the Town center thing but ended up wasting his boar in a tournament game so too dangerous imo.

A question, why dont u just shoot once with the luring villager? shooting 2 arrows is a bit risky as boar will follow u after the first shot, so your villager standing there and shooting another can be risky i thought?
You need to shot two arrows or else the boar wont follow you all the way down to the TC. He would just follow the villager a short distance and then turn arround.

I think this is probably safer for me, because I'll somehow mess up the lure and get two villagers killed if I have to use the mouse more than the keyboard. Hotkeys are best.

Boar strategy is good,but i think it"s not worth it,cause in this way u save under 2 seconds of gametime and risk too much.
Better way to kill boars is to send a single villager after boar and at his 75% max range shoot a single arrow at a boar,after that it will follow you to the town center without dealing any damage to villager,before towncenter 6 villagers will kill it with 2 shots each,the boar will follow the first villager all the time so if u run behind villagers the boar will follow and slow down while trying to run around 6-unit group. It always works and has no resource losses if 6 villagers were recently collecting food from sheep.
So all villagers stay at their full HP and the time loss is only 1,5-2 seconds per boar at most.

I have considered using the town center for this, however, I conclude that the time would spend doing all this microing could be used better.
This early in the game there usually isn't that much that needs your attention. You're just alternating between moving your scout, queuing up veils, and micros get vils. Plus you're probably going to be watching your boar lure anyway so that you don't lose a vil.
Couldn't one use control group numbers to prearrange just the right number of villagers to garrison?

I like to use three lorers, putts more damage on boar before it gets to tc and less damage on vills.

I think you should drop off the sheep meat before shooting the boar, right? Also just garrisoning the one villager and letting the rest shoot usually works quite well and keeps everyone as high HP.

+mdilligaf Doesn't matter in HD. You can go from shepherds to hunters without dropping the meat and versa. I'm pretty sure the same goes for berries, shore fish, farms but don't quote me on that last bit.

why some people build a house near to boar?
I usually just attack move the boar. A little trick I picked up from DOTA. Means I move my group of hunters a little way towards the approaching boar, shoot it and move towards the TC a bit, shoot it again move again and shoot it again and it dies on the perfect spot.
Or you can lure it with your villager right under the TC, garrison the villager and kill the boar when you like to. It usually doesn't run back immediately so you have a lot of time.

It may not, it sometimes freezes and gets killed. Anyway, I don't think it's a big deal to lose HP on vills, you send the injured ones to farms around the TC anyway.
