      A lot of big pro games are decided by one of them managing to pull off something like that in the early game. If one player thinks he will not get away with it, chances are he will not defend against it either, something being too balsy once in a while is an effective surprise.

    you can press 1 twice which might be faster by a fraction of a second if your right doesnt happen to be on spacebar

    • @SpiritOfTheLaw
      @SpiritOfTheLaw  9 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      HECKproductions on a neuron level, it would be theoretically faster to do 1 + space with two different fingers than 1 twice. Try using a stop watch with a Start/Split and a Stop button on the top, and pressing the start/split button twice in a row and seeing what the timer says, and then try pressing start and then the other stop button with a different finger as quickly as possible. You will have a hard time beating 0.10 seconds by pressing the same button twice, but can easily reach 0.02 or 0.01 by using two fingers. That's not WHY I do it with two fingers, but objectively it is a faster method :)

    I think that the staggered formation works slightly worse in this case because the back rowof archers a a bbit closer to the TC, hence easier to shoot.

    • @MarSHornetsandWasps-v26
      @MarSHornetsandWasps-v26 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. The main thing is that when the archers change direction so often, the TC fire can't hit them so well.

  • @bruni15
    @bruni15 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    One key point of dodging arrows is, change your unit(s) direction L/R instantly after the arrow is aimed every time, then the arrow would miss its target (even with 100% accuracy) because the arrow was going to hit the exact point its target is (or with a little spread) before you change direction, I could say you wouldn't even take any damage for the whole escape. It's all about practice!

    If you double hit 1 (your scout hotkey), it'll not only select your scout but also center on him like the spacebar would. You may prefer the space bar (since you're already used to it) but thought I'd point the double-hit as well in case you didn't know about it.

    Since TCs seem to keep targeting the same archer as long as it stays in range, maybe you could save even more archers by selecting the group the TC shot at and splitting that one, sending the other half out of range in a straight line.

  • @apelhitam
    @apelhitam 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Did you consider that when you change formation to loose when retreating in a straight line your rear most archers essentially waited for the group to get in formation, essentially exposing itself to extra damage? The result might be different if your group is already in spread formation and/or oriented to the retreat direction before you trigger tc aggro

  • @RennieAsh
    @RennieAsh 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    The split thing works great in this game, in AoE 1 you could just zigzag or time a feint just before the arrow shot (especially when they research accuracy as it makes them miss). If they had no accuracy, horses could dodge forever due to no arrow spread.

  • @RealKangarooFlu
    @RealKangarooFlu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Pro tip: you can also press the assignment hotkey twice to switch to the unit view.
    For example, if your scout is on hotkey 1, tapping 1 twice will do the same thing as pressing 1, then space.

    Hey Spirit,
    I had three questions when i saw this video:
    You seem to prefer spiralling to the left, but this keeps the units in range of the town center. I wonder what would happen if you spiralled away of the TC instead of towards it?
    When changing the formation of your units, it seems like their speed increases in the direction of the new formation. Is this true? and if so, could one use this to dodge shots? (from onagers for example)
    Why isn't loose formation used against siege heavy races? greater distance between units should decrease damage received from especially onagers and scorpions right?
    Anyway, great vid!

    Awesome videos!
    I assume that you created a map for testing?
    If the results are influenced by a pathfinding micro like at 8:19, it might help to use scenery to increase the consistency of the micro.
    Scenery like carpets and leaves etc have no collision and can be a useful landmark to assist in aim. However, I doubt that the difference in results pay-offs of the extra needed time to set it up.

  • @wayrof
    @wayrof 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      HECKproductions it's true. I can't remember if I put in the part of the clip where I have a light cavalry circling the town center. • @johnsnow5305
    @johnsnow5305 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    In your video I noticed you ran away from the diagonal side (the bottom of the diamond). Now if the TC shoots from the center, this is perfectly fine, as you are closest to the edge if that edge is a circle around the TC. If however the TC shoots in an edge the shape of the TC, you are actually in range of arrows longer by running away on the diamond side (as you know Pythagoras' theorem).
    If the TC shoots from the center of its 4x4 (6x6, 8x8?) tiles, no big deal. That means its attack radius is a circle. If it shoots from the edge of its 4x4 tiles (diamond), then those shots are no longer in a circle, but in a larger diamond area. I hope this makes sense and has a simple answer :)

    Hey spirit of the law, I thought of experiment that you could make a video about. When playing random map, your economy will be much better than your opponents if you are able to delay the loom research until just before you hit the feudal button. However, doing so leads to the problem of trying to lure a boar to your towncenter without LOOM, which can really suck if your boar is very far away and can end up killing your villager. But experts have found a way to utilize the sheep by running interference between the boar and the villager, giving the villager more distance and a better chance to garrison into the towncenter as soon as possible. Also, some experts try to lure their boars with a scout, but I don't know how effective that is, or if it's worth it to try. Maybe this could be an experiment to try out?

      tankimarkgraaf What you can do is continuously move the unit back and forth really quickly and then the arrows will always be fired where you would have been if you kept on going in that direction, so if you just go back to where you were when the arrows were fired you would miss them and then be able to run away.

    Hi there! cool video as always. What about splitting the group of archers into two groups moving in different directions? It would reduce the spread damage since only one group can be targeted at once. Plus the split technique on the targeted group, I would assume the damage taken would be reduced. It probably isn't worth the time it would consume, and also its highly impractical since you end with two separate group of archers instead of one, but might be interesting to see just how much damage can you reduce mixing all kind of techniques, just to find the *ultimate* running-away-from-tc-fire-technique.

You did the paladin/cavalier video which was great and now i don't upgrade my cavaliers unless i have heaps of them or surplus gold, but could you do another vid about upgrading troops. should i spend the resources to get cavalry upgrades like bloodlines and the blacksmith cav upgrades or should i spend those resources on actual knights, becasue there is a a good argument that cav upgrades wont save your base from attack but several kngiths un-upgraded might... cheers mate, awosme channel.

    When you are spiraling out with archers you are kind of doing your angle too tight, staying closer to the tc than you need to.

    Only unexperienced players ring the bell when they see an enemy scout, its more efective to select the group of vills and then garrison and ungarrison. So be careful with the scout vs people that dont ring bells 11

    Double Tapping '1' will Centre your scout quicker and Town Centres are already Hot Keyed to 'H' by default... Will help save precious seconds in Pro games I think...

  • @trevorWilkinson
    @trevorWilkinson 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    At the start you said you hotkey your TC. The game already has by default the TC hotkeyed to H. Also one method you didn't try was removing the archer under fire. The TC will be focussing only one archer, if you make that one archer do the 90 degree trick while the rest of the archers just stroll away. Pretty tough micro but I reckon it's possible with practice. I don't know if this would be more effective than the split formation though.

      trevor Wilkinson The downside to using H (or any keyboard hotkey for this matter) though is that the camera automatically centers the TC. So if you're just happily scouting and you need to queue more villagers, using a control group hotkey won't move the camera away from the scout and to the TC. That however isn't such a big deal if you have your scout on hotkey anyway since you can jump right back.

      trevor Wilkinson I prefer to use numbers rather than H because it involves less movement of my hand. H is also awkwardly placed in the middle of the keyboard, and I can basically leave my fingers over top of the spacebar and the first couple of numbers for most of the game. I have my hand positioned there because I use WASD for camera movement, though, so I have a custom setup around that. Using H to find TCs makes more sense to me when I have multiple town centers and want to go HCHCHCHCHC to cue up villagers. As for the micro of one archer, I don't think I would be able to identify which villager is under attack in time to micro him away. They die after a max of two direct arrow rounds, although maybe you would be better able to do this. The split saves ALL the archers for me at least half the time, which is saying something haha. I'd be curious to see it in action, though

      Spirit Of The Law Do you have side buttons on your mouse? AoE also seems to automatically set one of them to the TC. makes it very easy and fast to jump to the TC. If not this can be happily ignored ofc.

      Kaotic Phoenix Gotcha. the open end points toward the side that is greater. So 6 < 10 means "6 is less than 10" and 10 > 6 means "10 is greater than 6." I just remember that it looks like a crocodile and it eats the bigger number ;)

    I might be wrong but didn't you kill a villager once? That would certainly change the damage output, right?

    • @SpiritOfTheLaw
      @SpiritOfTheLaw  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Scorpion I didn't notice that, but yes, that would affect the damage output and make that particular run look a better than it should have been. I think the conclusions I made were general enough that I'm pretty confident in the overall trends and differences between the strategies.

    Is there a specific reason you hotkey your TC as 2 rather than hitting "H" which'll take you there anyway? I get that later in the game you'll have multiple TCs and it'll cycle but early on, I have no idea.

    • @Tocaraca

      Pressing H makes your view snap to the Town Center's location whereas pressing 2 only selects it but doesn't take you back to it.
