    Love the monthly tours with names on the screen!
    Zone 8, North Texas, potted up some bare root hosta (New Hampshire Hostas) 3 weeks ago in pots. They're exploding like crazy. Some mature at 55"!😮 So I've tasked myself with spacing them as best I can.
    Love ordering from them for the hosta selection and other companion plants.
    PS: the caption on the thumbnail made my brain play the Weird Science / Oingo Boingo song!

    We themed our garden after the trees in the Lorax. Last fall we planted more than 75 alliums because many of them look like the trees in the Lorax. Anyway they were supposed to bloom in succession from early spring to late summer. They’ve all come up lol. Not sure if we’re going to have to plant a lot more annuals or not. It was so strange the Jade Eyes Alliums came up in February with the crocus.

    Yup, I figured out coneflowers rather a leaner soil. Also the more fertile the soil the easier it is to reseed. Totally agree with keeping the older varieties of perennials, they certainly are tried and true.

    • @nolanholmberg311
      @nolanholmberg311 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're absolutely correct. I put a thin layer of compost on top of the clay and spread the coneflower seeds. BOOM instant coneflower bed. And they'll continue to reseed themselves. I live in a rural area so I get away with burning away the old crispy foliage in early spring which has the benefit of killing any of the weeds that come up in the winter

    I enjoy the back and forth between structure and fullness each year, as my garden matures. Every bed is an experiment to see what thrives. Rabbits play a role too. Watching you go through the same process is reassuring.

    • @amyp8833
      @amyp8833 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have so many homemade wire cages around small plants, just to keep the rabbits from annihilating them. We use the rolls of black metal mesh fencing material found at hardware stores to make our cages. I like the black because it seems to "disappear" with the greenery behind it. You'd think that the green metal would be ideal, but black is actually better.

    It's been a bumper crop year for irises, clematis and roses in Atlanta this Spring. I'm definitely spoiled by the cooler days so far. My foxgloves also look other wordly. Few casualties too - loropetalums look like absolute cr*p right now but I'm holding out hope. The second hard frost after warmer temps fried the new foliage but at least I got a few days of GORGEOUS flowers in early March - I have Purple Diamond; the contrast of the dark leaves and the bright pink flowers was SO pretty. I had a baby variegated tea olive planted last fall didn't make it through the December freeze. Absolutely zero buds on any of my macrophyllas this year but other than that, it is gearing up to be a fun and absolutely beautiful season.

I think it needs a little structure along the fence due to the abundant cottage garden inside the fence. Think of it like a picture frame around a picture. Between the rain & chilly nights, some things are a bit behind in N. Georgia too. My houseplants are well traveled at this point, they've been in & out so many times! Glad I left the pansies & violas, might be June before it's too warm for them 😅
    Plants are just reacting very differently this year. My Hosta Elegans has a bloom stalk but Golden Tiara is flopping like it's fall & Pauls Gold is barely leafed out. I'm afraid we're seeing changes that may just get worse. Adaptation is what gardening is all about but frustrating none the less.
    Thanks for keeping it real Jim & Stephany!

    I lost three of those western named Agastache; I think they were also " Arizona Sandstone "! One returned this year, all others dust. I lost a Rosie Posie too. I love Golden Jubilee, such a pollinator plant; has seeded itself around just a little bit and I can always tell the cute little babies due to their color. Glad to hear it wasn't just me.

    • @katiekane5247
      @katiekane5247 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely not just you. Lost all mine but the Golden Jubilee too. My Miss Huff came back but nothing yet from Chapel Hill. Lost the Lipstick Salvia Greggi too, it was huge & I'll miss it. Very strange how some things reacted to multiple assaults from the weather whiplash. Given the price points on some plants, I'm over spending on things that aren't reliable no matter how pretty they are. I love Jim's honesty, absolutely reliable! I've got a yard full of "weedy" Packera blooming itself silly, deer don't touch it. Nothing special but still better than a lawn 😅
      Edit: one Agastache I lost was Arizona Sunset in 7b. Might that be what yours was?

    My coneflowers have always been hit or miss fir some reason. I have more problems with the old fashioned purple ones than any others that are more "exotic". I also only lost a few plants during the cold blast and 2 beautiful orange agastache were victims. I'll try them 1 more time because they were amazing, but that's their last chance! My garden in 6a is doing better than I thought it would thanks to you! Remember everyone, don't over water and don't worship plants that don't grow well in the garden!!

    • @amyp8833
      @amyp8833 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I lost almost all of my coneflowers planted two seasons ago from voles eating the roots! They were absolutely beautiful last summer, their second season in the ground, then in late summer / fall, they started wilting. On investigation, I pulled the leaves right up with no roots! So, so, so disappointing. Only thing I know to do ... plant in permatill or mesh metal baskets. Gets expensive with a big garden.

    I appreciate your honesty and transparency in these videos. Another great tour. Beautiful space & a joy to watch come together. I have 3 varieties of agastache in my garden: Sunrise red, pink pearl, and meant to bee queen nectarine. Two new this spring but Sunrise red came back from the fall. I planted in sandy part shade conditions. We’ll see how they all do this year. Flowers are about to open on virginia sweetspire. Pow wow wildberry echinacea close to blooming too (a very happy plant!). Violas from my winter containers are now flowering in my Bermuda lawn.. that’s new! Haha. If you decide to give some rhythm n blues salvia away, my mom in Raleigh would take some! 😄

    The new hybrid pink/orange/yelllow agastaches haven't done well for me either (zone 6b Hudson Valley) even when planted in a sharply draining, hot, dry area. I think they just don't like the wet East Coast, although they are amazing in the Southwest. The blue/purple varieties (Blue Fortune, Little Adder, Golden Jubilee) grow like weeds here -- I have to move some of mine out of the bed they are in as they are crowding out some other plants. Pollinators love them.

      @kso808 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@younggarden_ If you have the Scarlet Fire dogwood, that is a grafted tree. If you planted the graft part of the trunk (the knobby point where one type of tree is spliced into another type) below ground level, then you would need to replant it so that the graft union is just above ground level. That way, you won’t get growth from the rootstock (underground) part of the plant, instead of the grafted upper portion. Hope this makes sense.
