YAY!!!! Congratulations!!! This is so awesome! I'm almost happy as you and Steph because now we get more of your awesome gardening videos!!!! I'm also looking forward to the native plant content too, I am always on the lookout for natives for my garden. 💕💕
With all of the invasives on the side lot, most would surrender before they even started. I look forward to seeing how the two of you begin the process of trying to tame that space. Good luck!
That’s an amazing opportunity and an interesting agreement… but my goodness, Raleigh has some incredible natives: Illicium, Sabal palms, Needle Palms, and so much more!
Wow! I feel so lucky we get to watch you tackle this project. I bought a house in North Raleigh last spring and the garden has pretty much the same profile as this (plus invasive honeysuckle). Got the wood chips down in fall. Going for 90% native species. Thanks for sharing your experience, guys. I have a lot to learn.
Congrats! A video idea is to show how you take out the invasive species to prepare the land for native planting. I have been looking the how to for it and an NC specific would be great..
My local NC State Extension office sent me a couple of packets of native wildflower seeds that are local ecotypes to Chatham county! I highly recommend any local's to contact their extension agency!
Oh I can't wait to see how you handle the invasive and weeds and particularly how you handle unliving (LOL) bermuda grass while building a new and beautiful garden!!!
So very exciting! This will be such a wonderful space for Raleigh and all gardeners. Personally, I’m really looking forward to the battle of the invasives. My garden is surrounded by land choked with English ivy.
Very happy you have this opportunity to share info about native gardening. Look forward to following this project. I hope y’all are getting enough help putting it together.
You’re going to have your hands full with this new planting space AND the other space you have plans for developing 🤗 you’re going to be busy BUT I’m sure a very happy gardener!!! ❄️⛄️💚🙃
This is amazing news! I've had my fingers crossed 🤞🏼 for you guys to be able to develop that piece since the beginning. WTG Jim and Steph, and ty Raleigh city council!
Hi Jim, I hope you read this. I have been watching your channel for at least a year. So many of the plants in my garden have been inspired from your recommendations (Juliet cleyera, Mojo pittosporum, White Wedding hydrangea). This wonderful news reflects your channel’s dedication to teaching - not selling a product - and shows you’re the real deal! I can’t wait to see what you both will do with the new space! Please do keep the channel updated with content relevant to this garden space. Congratulations!
Spectacular news! Will be with ya'll every step of the new garden journey! Raleigh is very fortunate to have ya'll as stewards of city property. Congratulations from Mt. Pleasant, SC.
Sounds like a very cool project. I will definitely follow along. I became interested in native (and useful to wildlife) plantings on my own property after reading a couple books by Doug Tallamy a few years ago.
Yeehaw! Come on down to GA and visit Plant Life Nursery, one of the best (and more scenic) native nurseries with tons of awesome stuff grown from seed! So excited to see this space come alive!
Oh, man...I'm so excited for this space!! That's so cool that it's actually going to be a place people can visit, too. Thanks for sharing, Jim, and for putting the work in to get this space allotted for this project.
Exciting news!! I cant wait to see content for this new native focused space, as I too am currently focusing on native planting, and wildlife for our newish property. It's gonna be super helpful to have you guys as a guide. Thanks Jim and Steph! What about putting in a small pond? I did a container pond, and its been really fun, my neighbor gave me a bunch of tadpoles from the top of their pool liner.
Super! Looking forward to learning from your new project! Our property borders a city trail in the foothills of the Cascades of Oregon . We have been allowed to encroach a bit. Invasive ivy, grasses, etc. continue to be removed and replaced with natives- Western Red Cedar tree, Oregon Iris, native grasses, yarrow, and a small bench made from Douglas Fir rounds. So much fun. Enjoy and have fun with your new project.
Congrats Jim! I can’t wait for the content. This is the real way to make America great, it starts in your community with projects like these. Sending good vibes!
Hi Jim and Stephany 👋 What great news! 👏 So excited for this new project and learning more about native plants. Thank you for sharing this with us. Congratulations. 😍
This is exciting news. I look forward to seeing the new space develop. My vote would be to use the woody invasives to make a dead hedge after they are cut down. Many people do not seem to be aware of this option for waste organic matter.
So glad you are finally doing this -- just seemed so logical to extend into that area. I have planted a lot of natives on my property 6b/7a Lower Hudson Valley NY. Looking forward to seeing what you plant and your visit to native plant nurseries.
What an opportunity in so many ways! You get to shop for more plants, grow more plants, expose folks to natives and display their potential! Dont be in such a rush to make a "big impact" for the open garden event. I'd like to see this landscape happen at a more "average gardener/homeowner" timeline for a project of this size. It makes my head swim sometimes at how quickly your home landscape and gardens have changed because of your skill set and experience. So many dont have the time or ability to achieve that quickly. It'd be helpful to see the changes in a more relaxed pace. Unless of course you have a promise or agreement with the city as to the timeline! Again, amazing opportunity! Congrats!
Soo exciting 🤗 - Your energy is contagious and you’re a born educator, so I think this will have a huge impact on introducing folks to the beauty & benefits of native plants- very excited to follow. It’ll be a ton of work, but I know you & Steph are more than up to the task!
We’ve had an abandoned house across the street, 15 years and counting, and I’d love for the city to give us some options that did something like let us create a community garden. Anything!
Oh my goodness, Jim and Steph! This is the best news ever! I’m excited about two things. First of course, the all native garden. And honestly, I’m just as excited to see you start with new soil and watch you turn it into the super soil you have at your home. This is a process I want to be along for. Today I actually got my first two loads of soiled hay from our goat barn and began the new season of organic mulch. Before anyone gets started on the dangers of using hay, let me say this is the same hay, from the same provider that we have used for years. I’m a firm believer in using what you have. Congratulations!
Congratulations! Big win for you! Even bigger win for your viewers and for Raleigh!
This is the best news and it makes me so happy! Thank you Jim and Stephanie for bringing back natives that will be healing for your neighborhood❤️
Yes! I've been hoping you two would get your hands on that lot! Can't wait to see it develop.
How exciting! I am even happier I got us some tickets :-)
Wow. I am looking forward to following how you will develop the new space. Kudos to the city to be open to this great idea of a native garden
Wonderful! Can’t wait to follow you on this journey and to see it this summer! Thanks so much Jim and Steph!
So excited to see this!
Congratulations!! I am happy of your expansion and that you are only using Natives. I can’t wait to see what you do with the space. 😊

Hey Jim. Congrats. 🎉That’s amazing. Happy you got the green light to extend your gardening space. ❤

Fantastic opportunity! It’s going to be so educational to see you take this from invasives to native cultivars!
