    As an uruguayan, I can definitely say this must be the most accurate dont's of Uruguay video there is. Usually these kind of videos are made by people who just went to Wikipedia and made up stuff, but this one is actually quite nice. There are a few things I would disagree (like the vegan/vegetarian options, but I do understand this video is a few years old. Nowadays the offer for vegan and vegetarian restaurants is bigger), but overall, this is accurate.

      What about the mate? Do you drink it the same way now with Covid?

    • @japsuy
      @japsuy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      I agree with the vegetarian / vegan thing, but this is quite recent indeed. Also, he might have been told we're traditionally cattle raisers and our cuisine has historically been based on that. Not so sure about the non-rare beef, I believe most restaurants tend to offer medium-rare / rare asado, there's always a debate and different preferences in every household. I'd also add avoid confusing Paraguay and Uruguay, while we are very fond of our Paraguayan brothers, we are two different countries (sound similar, but quite different). As regards maté (the e sounds in Spanish) we are now recommended not to share it, unless it's within our own "bubble".

    • @vall8249
      @vall8249 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @@fernathebest414 I mean, you're not supposed to share the mate right now. If people respect that or not, I don't know, but I think it's common sense that you shouldn't.

      @fernathebest414 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Thanks to both of you. I’m guessing everyone has their mate now days.
      Regarding Paraguay for a long time I believed that one was the capital of the other. I get that you are different people now.
      However I would like to ask you guys if you believe that both countries could be provinces of Argentina?
      I mean do you think there is a bigger difference between Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina than between California, South Coralina and Massachusetts?

    • @vall8249
      @vall8249 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@fernathebest414 Uhhh, no. For once, Paraguay and Uruguay are very different. Uruguay has a lot in common with Argentina, nevertheless, but we're a separate country. We have our cultural differences too. I can't tell you how different it is to those states you mentioned because I'm not from the US and I've never been in the US.
      And yes, everyone has their own mate. Mate is shared but, usually uruguayans who drink mate have their own, sharing it is just a custom.

    I've lived in Uruguay almost 3 years now. Originally from California but have lived in both Guatemala and Spain. It's a Lovely country, friendly, helpful welcoming people and Safe (especially when compared to other places!!) . Culturally speaking it's Amazing- theater, poetry, music, films, dance, literature etc.- more don't miss! I love the laidback pace and style, no heavy emphasis on consumption, high literacy rate (and it shows!) lovely beaches- Punta del Este least favorite( bit too touristy IMO) better Aguas Dulces, Punta de Diablo, Piriapolis and the gorgeous interior with its farms and gauchos :) Viva Uruguay!

    I lived in Uruguay for a 1.5 years and have been to 95% of the country while I lived there
    Don't forget about the interior (everywhere but Colonia, Montevideo, & the beach towns) Salto and the Termas, Paysandú is beautiful.
    My favorite is Villa Serrano near Minas in the Lavalleja province and Las Cañas near Fray Bentos.
    The three places I haven't been but locals love are Quebrado de los Condores in Treinta y Tres, Valle del Lunarejo en Rivera, Nuevo Helvecia a Swiss town in Colonia.
    Speaking of Don't call them states or provinces they are departamentos, and don't confuse the departamento with the city 12/19 have the same name such as Canelones, Artigas, Rivera, Salto, Colonia, etc.
    If you speak Spanish and come from Argentina some words change like facturas becomes bizcochos (delicious) colectivo becomes bondi and I'm sure there are a few others.
    Speaking of Argentina, don't assume the locals are like Argentines especially Porteños (Buenos Aires residents) while mentioned in the video that is the quickest way to insult an Uruguayan other than calling it a province of Argentina (it's not and even historically wasn't, although Argentines may disagree)
    If you have the time you could probably get a pretty good overview of the country in 7-10 days staying 2-3 days in MVD 1-2 days in Colonia 2-3 days in the interior and going to Piriapolis, La Paloma, José Ignacio, Punta del Este, Cabo Polonia, or Punta del Diablo for 3-5 days.

    Uruguayan here. Quick note. Asado, proper asado in Uruguay, is usually cooked more on the rare side. Parrillas (Asado restaurants), that are close to the most touristic places, usually cook it more on the well done side. So if you want have a really tasty and fair bloody taste of meat go closer to the center of the city rather than ciudad vieja (old town). If you have the chance to go to the countryside, even if its close to the city, go for it! Amazing, even for the people that live in the city.

    For those who don’t understand, a mate is basically a much fresher and tastier tea. Instead of having leaves in a bag you have the leaves in a gourd. The straw is metal has tiny holes in the bottom so you don’t end up drinking (sometimes you do but it’s no big deal) the leaf bits.

    As an uruguayan, my favorite beaches are in Rocha. Some nights in the summer, you can see the noctilucas (which are sea luminiscence) at the beaches of Punta del Diablo, a seaside village that use to be a fishermen village, sitted on the cost of the Atlantic Ocean. You can buy fish and seafood to locals, and is much cheaper than buy it in any other place.
    Some of the best places to watch the stars in Uruguay are in Rocha (like a hamlet called Cabo Polonio, Punta del Diablo, or Valizas, another seaside village), because there a low light pollution (this towns use to be pretty unpopulated, with the exception of the summer, when they fill with tourists).

It is the home of Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró and is located in Punta Ballena, 13 kilometers from Punta del Este. as an uruguayan, i'd say this video is really accurate! here are some more things to keep in mind when visiting:
    most cars here aren't automatic, so if you want to rent an automatic car you have to specifically ask for one. since shopping centres are relatively expensive, i def recommend checking out local artisan shops and ferias (street markets) if you plan on buying souvenirs and such. also, i'm not exaggerating when i say that it can take you half an hour to drive 10 blocks in punta del este during summer. walking is definitely the way to go if you want to get somewhere fast. finally, alfajores-wise (lol) nativo are my favourites by far. they're high quality and totally worth the price imo. personally, i'd just skip the oreo, peanut butter, and odd flavoured ones altogether, although they aren't bad they don't even come close to the real thing.
    if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!! :)

    Excellent video! I find it bizarre that a lot of people confuse Argentina and Uruguay as though they're one country!!!! The best point was hearing that the country isn't a vegetarian-friendly because I'm a MEAT-EATER!!!! I can't wait to visit this country soon (I'm visiting Brazil as my first South American country). Thank you for this video!!!!

      Nowadays you will find tons of vegetarian food in the restaurants but uruguay it's well know for having the beast meat of the world, so we eat tons of meat here, for example I eat meat at least 5 days of the week

      In fact, 200 years ago we were an Argentine province. Check it out. Both were part of the Spanish Empire until early 18th century.

      @@marumaruu3115 Wr werent a province of argentina, argentina didn't exist!!! Uruguay and the providences of the river plate were part of the Kingdom of Spain, but argentina wasn't a country, Uruguay was part of the empire of Brazil, Portugal, England and Spain, but not from Argentina.

      @@marumaruu3115 That's true. At one point, it was part of the Brazilian Empire, yet people don't confuse Uruguay and Brazil.

      @@WanderlustAweSyndrome that is because we kept Spanish as our language. And our culture is much more Spanish than Portuguese, although we have dry borders with Brazil to the North. Both our Capital Cities are across the River Plata, to the South of Uruguay, and maritime commerce between both cities was always very important. Besides, habits in general are the same as argentinians. The differences are subtle. For example, our mate is made with a different yerba (pulverized tea leaves from the south of Brazil), which requires a different kind of straw with very tiny holes. The argentinian mate is made with argentinian plant, which is cropped instead, so the straw is quite different, and the taste is completely different - we don't like it. Anyway, cultural rivalry is the reason , I believe, neither Urguayans nor Argentinians are willing to admit we are more alike than different, haha!!

    Places you NEED to visit if you're vegan or vegetarian:
    Montevideo:
    -Vegan Wraps (more than wraps, believe me)
    -Guacamole
    -Juicy Lucy
    -Kiosko Veganoide
    Maldonado:
    -El Bandido
    -Madre Mia (only delivery but THE BEST burgers and pizzas)
    -Oli Veggie Food
    -Amorcito
    Also, check @aptovegano.uy instagram, they have a guide for each departamento indicating where you can find vegan food.
    Etosha's products are THE BOMB (they have a variety of vegan meats and vegan muzzarella and cheddar, and there many different local businesses that are selling home-made vegan versions of classic uruguayan food (like Vegabon's alfajores with dulce de leche made from coconut's milk). More icecream stores are including vegan options (Ill Porto and Arleccino in Punta del Este).

    I came here thinking this was going to be another standard bad oversimplified video. I was pleasantly surprised! The video is overall really good, co congratulations man! We don't usually have the meat well done, servers usually ask and we have specific that can be differentiated from other places. Other than that you did make it justice.

      A couple of extra advises:
      1- There are a few good vegan restaurants and stores around Montevideo, so don't feel that discouraged if you're a vegetarian or vegan.. but yeah we have a strong meat-based culture
      2- DO reject the mate-circle IF the pandemic is still ongoing when you come over here. We've already adapted to that, so we'll understand. But yeah, any other non-pandemic time, it'll be nice to accept it so that you can have that experience (you're not forced of course, but we appreciate outsiders giving it a try).
      3- Some people drink mate at incredibly high temperatures. Be warned. You can let it cool for a sec or blowthe metal straw to cool it down a bit (try not to take too long as to not break the circle thou).
      4- Siesta time doesn't exist in the capital (Montevideo) or not at least in the most commercial areas / big bussinesses, feel free to shop on Sundays there, specially in the Shopping Centers of Montevideo (generally closing at 10 PM, but 9 PM now because of the pandemic).
