Wow, this was really good. My favorite part is "the celebration is not the same, there is a sadness involved..." that is the most Human statement I have hear a modern hunter say, and I felt it really deep in me. Thanks!

One caveat I always add to this conversation is from us southern whitetail bow hunters: the "when in doubt, back out" mantra is a rare thing for us. During our bow seasons (GA, for me specifically), the temperature only drops to maybe the mid 70s at night. If you are a hunter concerned with meat in any way, we ALWAYS laugh at these shows who just flippantly say "we'll back out and find him the AM." Well, that's great. Y'all live in a refridgerator, we don't. Lethal shots are paramount on our hunts or that deer is spoiled meat and/or coyote food.

I want to thank you guys for posting this video, and providing all the useful information. I have always been "scared" of hitting the shoulder, and have always been taught to aim for the crease. I shot a buck last night that was quartering towards me, and I went right up the front leg and made a perfect shot through the heart. If I had aimed at the crease, I likely would've caught one lung/liver/stomach, and it could have ended up being a very long evening. Instead, it was a blood trail as if someone had taken a bucket of blood and poured it the entire 75 yards until I found the animal expired. Thank you guys for the awesome information, and the always exciting content.

good stuff. I think another good thing to have in mind is how the deer will spin when quartered to. Ive never seen one spin into the sound of the shot. Knowing theyre going to open up those vitals for you on the drop is comforting.

The buck I shot last year was slightly quartering to from the ground at 10-12yds...i remember it felt like an eternity of aiming even though in reality it was probably less than 2 seconds. Adrenaline causes you to hyper focus and time "stands still". Take your time to aim guys, itll pay off. I watched mine tip over cuz of it.

I’m glad I watched this because I gut shot a deer last year because I feared for ever that if I hit the leg or shoulder (this has been told to me over and over) it won’t pass. I basically found after actually looking at my shot and see where I aimed and how the deer dropped and turned even off by a few inches I was at the gut. The last shot I made that dropped a deer quickly got broken off immediately by the leg but dropped the deer quickly. After hearing this and seeing these shots I fear less and feel you should trust your gear and place it low and further forward.

Maybe a similar video about where to hit turkeys? I took two shots this year that felt good and seem to cut feathers yet the bird just stood there after the shot and walked away. Close shots too 15-20 yards. Its amazing if you are off by an inch on a turkey compared to a bigger target like deer.

I think I would have difficulty aiming both that low and that far forward unless I practiced it all summer. I don’t care about scoring on 3d animals anyway but people I shoot with, mostly non hunters, think I missed my shot when I aim for the vital V. I’m happy with my shots and they coach me trying to get my shot center mass. I just smile and say I’ll try harder. I practice for short blood trails not perfect 3d scores. Great video boys.

Interesting. I have been burned so many times by shoulder bone shots that I started aiming further back to avoid that risk(and I am having more success as a result). Is the "low and forward" placement only for folks with pinpoint accuracy or is there something I am missing when it comes to the shoulder bone problem?

    • @brokenarrow6491

I've been bow hunting for over 50 years now and I can't tell you how many deer I've seen over the years with arrows and broadheads sticking out of their shoulder. There is a lot of pressure around me. I aim for the heart. If the deer doesn't move I get them and if they drop a little you still get the lungs. I rarely have a deer go over 35 to 40 yards when I hit the lungs. There is no pinpoint Accuracy when shooting a animal. A deer can move for a variety of reasons. I shot a buck in the heart once and found him 3 hours later and had to make a follow up shot. When cleaning him there was an x in the middle of his heart from the fixed blade broadhead I was shooting. There are no guarantees just do what works best for you Good luck this season.

So, are you guys aiming for the intrance or the exit ? I read a book about bow hunting that was the best way to aim for the exit. By orienting the vitals to be in the line of the arrow. Because the deer may never give you a broad side angle or picture perfect?

I recently watched a video, can’t remember who it was, but they were showing how much more explosive a deer can react when it’s head is down in sort of the feeding position compared to the head straight up. Being able to have confidence in your equipment is also a huge key. a 340 shaft with a 200 grizzly stick, or an Iron will, wide, single bevel!! getting caught up in speed bows & mechanicals has ruined confidence for prime shot placement for lots of hunters. fearing to hit the front shoulder. Lose a little speed, & increase your Impact performance. I'm shooting a mathews switch back xt at 62 pounds 28" draw. My arrow set ups are 550+ grain. A single shoulder doesn't stop them & makes an already really quiet Bow even better.

After hearing RF discuss jumping the string and his indication that the fletchings were the more probable culprit causing animals to jump before impact, I had to stand down range and listen to a couple shots. Those fletchings sound like a pissed off Hornet buzzing past. The twang of the bow almost goes unnoticed by comparison. These animals can easily hear the fletchings ripping the air and the only way to interpret that sound is a threat.

    Hi, guys great video,...
    And you guys are correct...
If you look at a deers anatomy, front leg bone structure, when a deer is standing, full erect..,
For them to move quickly or jump ,... the only way for that to happen, the very first movement, has to be " down ",
For this to happen. That is why we all have to remember, this vitally important information...
Always aiming low, is always your best 😊 bet!" !
Even if you may miss", you will usually miss clean with no harm to the animal, whatsoever.
Hit," and it is usually a success!!! 😁😃👍
Luv ya guys!, greatjob once again, keep up the good 👍 work!

This is great info you guys are sharing. I'm a 20 yard and in guy. I have taken a deer a little farther (25 yds), but I know 20 yards is my true max. Shot angle is important to me (ground/tree stand). I too, shoot into the vital V a little tighter (and yes, I have hit too far forward before, but I have also hit to far back an those seem to be the longest track jobs). Knowing your bow and being honest of it's capabilities is probably underrated. Great Video.

I wish every hunter would have to see at least one video like this before being able to buy a license. We see so many hunters? that hit deer in the wrong places. Too many see the tv hunters taking high lung hits as common and the thing to do. They need to learn what and where the “ golden triangle “ is. And where to aim from elevated places. Taking long? distance shots ( IMO 35 yards max) shouldn’t be taken unless you’re trying to finish killing a wounded animal. Another issue that gets me so damn mad is the guy, not a hunter IMO, that starts shooting two weeks or even three weeks before opening day. That is a huge part of WHERE TO SHOOT A DEER as most of these people just find hair and shoot.

There seem to be a lot of videos on the market showing “kill shots” for example something like “30 kill shots in 30 seconds”. as an archery deer hunter in Minnesota what I’m most interested in is, yes, the point of impact, giving me a chance to test my understanding against the video, but more than that I value what happens after the shot. I realize it’s hard to both hunt and film But those first few seconds after the shot are drilled into my memory. I’m searching for indications that tell me something about the shot, good or bad. Lacking that kind of video follow up a detailed description Of the thoughts that run through the mind of the hunter as he tries to make order out of what just happened can be very helpful. Your video and others by the hunting public attempt to do just that. I commend you and like other comments I urge you to keep it up.

I’m all for killing deer with the bow. It’s my passion. That said, I disagree on this subject.
Practice, practice, practice good techniques. When you start getting good shots on target, practice even more. I don’t often hear about unrecovered deer from those who who don’t skip practice.
Find the farthest distance you are comfortable taking a kill shot at then double that distance and practice there.
I will never aim for the heart. That’s is the best cut of meat on the dear! I think it is a terrible offense to waste the heart. You do not have to hit the heart. The double lung is more than adequate to kill any deer.

Great information on deer anatomy. I feel like there is a lot of misinformation on bears though. "Shoot middle of the middle". • @KyleAldinger

I still second guess myself when I see the shot hit right where THP and Ranch Fairy tell me to hit. It’s just so much lower and farther forward than the generic “behind the shoulder” way of thinking. And yet the deer almost always has a triangular hole through its heart.

In my experience, the lungs are a priority to the heart. Behind the shoulder in the vital V will achieve the quickest kill.
A wide cutting broadhead in the V region with sufficient energy to create a pass-through is the ticket.

Really good info guys. I shot a buck last year, nice 8 point, 9 yards from the ground, hit slightly high but still center lungs. The arrow stopped half way through. He snapped 6 inches off the fletch end on a tree. Waited about 45 minutes before I started looking for blood, but I saw the arrow as he ran off, knew it was a good hit. Followed blood for about 100 yards, then backed out. He ran 450 yards before I lost blood. Had a dog come in and couldn't find him. Looked for 3 days and never recovered him. I decided right then I needed to step up my arrow set up and my shot placement. Thanks guys for the videos! Great work! Ps, ended up with a doe 2 weeks later, same spot.

I shoot Hoyt, I don't shoot heavy arrows, I use the factory arrows (Goldtips) and strip the vains off cut them down to the right draw length on the shelf and use short vains of my choice. I use a 125 grain mechanical ( rocket )broadheads which is a small diameter. I will use silencers and stabilizers.
My goal is too have a quiet bow, and decent speed and I know where to hit my target. It's never failed me. I set my daughter's bow up the same way and she shoots a 50 lbs Hoyt and gets full pass throughs. Silent and deadly...

The biggest thing that’s helped me is forcing myself not to pick up the bow right away. Let my heart rate slow down, and then going through my shot process slowly and pulling though the shot.

Nice. The only comment I would add is that the aiming point for bear is vastly different. I remember several years ago, the new "game face" of the Block came out. Anatomically speaking the aiming point for a walking bear's heart was way off the mark. I wondered who the designer was, and if they ever got any flack from real life hunters.
    What's you opinion on bear?

I learned just how low you can hit a deer during the 2022 season. Using my 350 legend sighted in at 100yrds. I had a buck 148yrds away standing in a bedding area locked down on a doe. I knew the bullet would drop but I had no idea how much. Aiming at the shoulder with a perfect broadside shot I squeezed the trigger. Gun fires and the deer jumps out from the bedding into the open field. Sitting there thinking why on earth this deer isn't running I quickly considered a follow-up shot. Reaching for the bolt to put another round in the chamber I watch my first ever split brow tine 8 point drop on the spot. Walking up to the deer I find the entry hole 3 inches up from the bottom of the deer. While field dressing the deer I found the bottom point of the heart was blown out and the bullet remained in the chest cavity. I learned a lot that night and will definitely remember to factor in bullet drop more as well as energy loss on longer shots.
This hunting story is much longer than what I wrote and is one I'll be telling till the end of time.

First you guys are awesome! Keep the videos coming. The crew is what makes it… alright my question is… what kind of 3D decoy do you recommend? Is there a brand or model that you think is the best? If the vital area is focused on the corner of the foam insert, do you paint an area in lower corner? How do you go about setting up your 3D decoy? Thank you for your time.

2 years ago my daughter shot a nice 10 pt through the heart. It ran 40 yards and we watched it pile up, but there was almost no blood trail. Last year, I was filming a guy and he shot a buck through the heart, almost cutting the heart in half. It walked a few yards, then trotted off, dying about 100 yards away. That deer didn’t bleed much, either, and the track job was actually a little tricky. Yes, a heart shot is lethal, but I’ll always go for double lungs.

That was waaaay low at 7:49. No way that was double lung. Bad shot. If you had not hit the heart it would have been single lung, gone! You needed to aim 6” higher to center punch, double lung, right over the heart.
