Box dyes have come a long way and like a lot of other people I’ve paid for the professional only to leave unhappy and gone home to dye over their bad job with a box dye. It does take a little research sometimes to get the colour you want but if you are willing to learn how dyes work on hair and how to achieve different tones then it’s way more satisfying doing it yourself. I started doing my own hair a few years ago with box dyes and hairdresser scissors. My hair has never looked so good and shiny. I even get compliments from people on my hair color. Garnier Nutrisse to me is the best box dye brand, you have to choose a lighter shade than what you want, but they truly have their thing together! At salons I pay fortunes and they judge me everytime. I'm mixed race and they know nothing about that type of hair which makes me sad. They should be educated about all types of hair that exist in the world, it's almost racism to only learn about white people's type of hair. Only one hairdresser I've had in my life was educated about my type of hair. They shame me for using my straightener too much and one even said it looked like my hair went in an air fryer and argued with me that my hair wasn't also naturally dry. Bold when she knows nothing about mixed race type of hair. I was 7 years old never touched a hair straigthener and my hair was already super dry it's just a dry type of hair and needs lots of keratin and moisture and she really wasn't educated on that.

i avoid the salon at all costs. for starters, it’s incredibly expensive and i’ve heard so many horror stories of people leaving with ruined patchy hair after spending £200+ on it. now of course, there’s some really talented stylists out there who really know their stuff and props to them. if you can afford it, including all the touch ups then a salon would definitely be a good option because they’re clearly more professional. BUT, in my personal experience, i’ve been doing my own hair for a while now and i’ve had many colours and bleached it multiple times without much problem at all. it fits my budget and looks exactly how i expect. if you find decent products and actually research the right way to do these things, you shouldn’t face many issues at home. personally, when i’ve box dyed my hair a natural colour, and when it’s
nicely styled, it looks incredibly natural and not from a dye at all. just expect that there could be problems (just like in a normal salon), read the instructions and research how to maintain it well after including the products you use.

a few years back my older sister came home from getting her hair done one night, and it looked terrible. she was very upset because her hair was a completely different color than what she asked for(blonde, but she came home with a more gray color hair) and they had told her it looked great.
i don’t go now, because i can’t afford it, but also because it really isn’t worth it for me to search for an exceptional hair stylist who will cost a lot and end up berating me for using box dye
don’t get me wrong though, i still have the utmost respect for hairdressers alike.
my mother went to school for cosmetology and hairdressing for a while, so that’s helpful. i use box dye, it doesn’t look awful.

For brunettes going blonde (I went from mid ash brown to light natural blonde) the L’Oréal Paris line is actually really good. Look for the ultra ash line to help nix brass tones and the creme line works well to minimize damage. You probably will have to take split ends off tho.

I've used box dyes for as long as I can remember. I've never had any issues with them whatsoever. I've always stuck to dark brown and black. I had black hair for years until I decided I wanted to go back to my original colour which is brown. My natural colour is what you've got! I used a colour remover to rid the black and that didn't cause any damage BUT did leave my hair feeling dull straight after use but once I did a deep condition it was soft again. I dyed my hair 2 weeks after and it came out beautifully. No dryness, no missing bits, healthy looking and shiny. I have curly hair, being mixed race and my curls popped back! It's not affected my hair in the slightest. I can't afford going to a salon every time I need to do my colour. I have grey roots that pop by every 3 months to say hi and having to go to a salon every 3 months would cost me a fortune. Box dyes haven't caused me any problems so I will be continuing to use them and us box dye users should never be made to feel guilty. It's what we can afford. You being a hairdressers can workout the cost it would be to do it every 3 months! Thanks for the video but I doubt it will help anyone that can't afford going to a salon on a regular basis! Salons are not cheap. I live in the UK and believe me just going to get a trim is expensive! I now trim my own hair and do a pretty good job if I say so myself lol. 😘

The downside to box color is the flat, one dimensional appearance. But sadly, $200 every 6 weeks ( or $1,600-1,800/year ) is a lot for me vs. $14 box ($122/year). I do give myself a home hair mask every week so my hair remains soft and well hydrated. It also helps to give a little bit of shine.

Also i went with dark brown hair but showed her picture of my hair history to show her how my hair react and what i already had a few years ago and what i did etc etc and she didn't trust me and wanted me to get a chocolate balayage....i said know, we went for highlight and she was like "oh you hair did lighten very well! Next time we'll go lighter!" Like......girl no lmao

The thing is, I've gone to professional stylists and they've done disasters in my hair, from dying it a completely different color, to having the color come out patchy, and then charging an absolute fortune for it. Several have been rude and condescending, and often even angry at the sheer amount of hair I have (I have A LOT of hair, and every single stylist has complained about it, as if that's something I can help). The last time I went to the stylist I left in tears. No more. I'm buying dye and doing it myself.

Same! They complain about the amount of hair and some even charge extra. Results are always mediocre or bad. Even though internet shows talented people, most salons don’t work that way. They don’t look at the texture, condition of your hair/complexion of your skin. Box dye is more reliable than a salon.

It's one of the great injustices of the universe that there are dozens of blond shades, but only a few shades of red and only half of them are believable. When I started coloring my hair I couldn't find a color I liked, so I called the help line. He was so helpful and told me that I could mix colors of the same brand to get the color I wanted. So I mixed two colors and sometimes used a third color for highlights. After more than thirty years I thought about going grey during lockdown but noooooo... Not yet.

I opened my eyes back up and realized all the people that had been in the room with me were gone so what seemed like two seconds for me was much longer. I walked out there and the hairdresser said “you’re still here?!” She looked like straight panic and said she thought she had finished me a long time ago. I said, you put me in the back room. Now how did she completely forget about a customer - she told me that she triple processed my hair. It looked horrible when I left, didn’t even offer a discount, and wanted me to come back to see if she could correct some of what she did. Now why would I return if you ruined it once??

i appreciate this less guilt-trippy approach because i honestly think hair professionals are a different breed. the thing that they don't really consider is... some people just don't care. I don't care about dimension or having natural looking hair. i'd rather be in control of the process and do my own mistakes and learn from them because i honestly don't mind giving myself a buzzcut worst case if i have to. and the great thing is, i learned a really cool skill by using box dyes and cutting my own hair since i was a teen. i've been going to the hair salon as well but it takes too much time imo. so yeah, explaining to people how to use box dye safely is more useful than repeating the same rhetoric and withholding information about doing your hair safely.

My gray hair became really difficult to manage. Every 4- 6 weeks I had to shag to the salon, make an appointment, then wait for an appointment. The expense was becoming really crazy! This is the hairdressers equivalent of “If you’re going to drink I’d rather you do it in the house - I’m not a regular mom I’m a cool mom” 😂😂😂

I’ve never been to the hair dressers for colour I’ve done it myself it has always turned out lovely 😊 and it costs me little…. Compared to the huge prices at the salon.
    Thanks for the information x

I used to lighten my own hair and my stylist never guessed until years later when she discovered my natural roots. She was astonished how well I did it on my own, kept asking my technique.
Me: Well, I pour one bottle into the other and just slather it on my head.

I asked a girl at my work what salon she goes to for coloring as her hair is always gorgeous. Her answer was she does it herself w/ a $7 box from Walmart. I worked with her for 5 years, hair was always great

Alot of us are using box dye because it costs an arm and a leg to get hair coloured at a salon these days. I paid £70 to get my hair coloured pastel pink. I didn't wash it for a whole week. Went to wash it using the shampoo and conditioner the hairdresser advised me to use, for it to only fade very quickly with the first wash!! Now that salon has closed down. And I can't say I'm surprised tbh. And recently I have been having consultations at different hair salons asking about going either ash blonde or red. It's over £130 just for that!! Ridiculous!! One of them judged me because I bleached my hair at home. I have removed my jet black hair using colour B4 tonight. I have used this exact same product a few years ago. It's come out with the right results, which is exactly what I've wanted, just like before. Also to remove dark hair colour is hair bleach. The best one is jerome russell Bblonde. I swear by that, and it lifts my hair very well. Also using jerome russell bonding treatment within the hair, prevents it from damage to much. I'm dyeing my hair red later on, with cream developer, 30% volume. This is going to lift it well, without using bleach. I have been seeing these video tutorials on TH-cam. So no we don't want to go to a costly trip to the hair salon, where box dye, home colour remover kit, and home bleaching kit works just as well. Superdrug always offer deals on box dyes too. Two for £14. It's also easier for peeps like us to do that at home, rather than sat in a chair feeling overwhelmed and anxious, thinking how is my hair going to turn out, and trying to make small talk. I also don't like my hair being touched by strangers, it's sensory overload for me. By the way I cut my own hair too. Saves me £24. I got hair cutting scissors and blending razor scissors from ebay. In a case for £10. People at work have complimented me when I cut my hair. They said it looks better than having it done at the salon!! 😊

My gray hair roots grow so fast. Even if my hair doesn't look that natural, I will continue to use boxed. I go to the Salon pay 150.00, one month later my skunk roots starts showing.😭 If anything I let my grey grow out. I still get more compliments. I thank her for the boxed advice though.

I find that as long as you take care of your hair type in general, do your research on what your doing and prepare your tools and give yourself time to actually take your time... the color will look just as good as if you went to a salon. And you save money! I like to bleach and dye my own hair but I did TONS of research and watched SO MANY VIDEOS of professionals working.

I appreciate the tips. I have super short hair, so I'm not too worried about long term effects, as any color that goes into my hair will be cut out completely within about 6 months. I usually get my hair colored at the salon, but it's so expensive and right now money is tight. I just want to cover up the grays and enrich the color a bit, as my hair is kind of a gray-brown color naturally. I'm also pretty heavily graying.

Question: I went to many hair salons fancy and basic but stopped because of these issues - please help me understand… why do hairdressers tease at the base of the hair or at all when coloring or styling? Doesn’t that break or weaken your hair? Or why do they comb from the roots down if that makes tangles worse? Sorry one more - why do they whip the hair around when towel drying or styling if that causes damages the cuticles? Comments please🙏

If you want to lighten your hair from previous black or dark box dye without bleach, you can use a mixture of crushed up vitamin c tablets and head and shoulders shampoo. Mix it into a paste and spread it onto hair evenly and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. I learned this watching a episode of Kardashians how Kim lightened her hair. It sounds crazy but it works. I got my hair from black box dye of a year back to a lighter color. It took me about a month of doing this treatment once a week then I deep conditioned after. It is drying so you need to deep condtion. And my hair lifted a lot. After you need to either tone your hair or use whatever color you want.

I've never got any good advice from a salon, and I've yet to see a hair dresser who has better hair than me (theirs is usually fried crispy), so the only thing I let hair dressers do to my hair these days is cut it, and they screw even that up half the time.
I tried everything back in the day, platinum blonde to raven black, even went green for a while, but now I've been rocking my natural hair colour (chestnut) for 15 years, which is honestly the best way to live. The grays can still be managed with tweezers, but when they can't... I think I'll just let them come. Mine are silver and actually sparkle like tinsel in my hair. I kind of like the effect. If I decide to start dying again, though, I definitely won't be going to a salon. Box dye all the way. I remember it working perfectly well for me.
And for god's sake, never let them talk you into buying the products they sell - they're no better than the stuff from the supermarket, it's a complete scam.

It just all depends. Some box dyes are bad and some hair stylists are bad. Like makeup you have to take care of what’s underneath, putting makeup or colors on top won’t guarantee the glow!

I've gone blonde from black hair with box color and it was so good my barber asked where I got it done. Box color is fine Salons always mess up my hair, when I do it at home from a box it comes out better. This feels classist tbh.
