    I'm moving towards him in regards to meat. I went fron eating a pound a day of meat (8oz servings twice a day) to less than a pound a month. And I'll keep trying to reduce it more.
    In my head, i went from eating over 350 pounds a year to less than 12 pounds a year.
    I know it's still eating meat, but I'm comfortable with the reduction and will keep trying to reduce

      Something that I think people miss with a vegan-friendly diet is that first and foremost it has to be healthy and nutritious. If it isn't, then it's important to make whatever changes you need to so as to ensure it is. Veganism is not about harming yourself for a moral philosophy. That's why they put the bit about "possible and practicable" in there. By definition, a vegan-friendly diet should be the most consistent with the philosophy while ensuring your health in your circumstances.

      @graememcelligott8874 not really, it's about personal choices to be healthy rather then inflicting suffering and exploitation on animals what isn't a personal choice as it involves two beings in the equation.

      I’m pretty sure I have a memory of him on a podcast once - talking about why he went vegan?… not sure though.
      I get the feeling he “doesn’t like labels” simply because he doesn’t want to be accused of bias…
      Personally I think bivalves are vegan… and eating meat that’s being thrown out could technically be vegan in my view as well. 🤷‍♂️
      However, Accepting meat if it’s as a guest at someone’s house is not vegan or ethical in my view. I think that’s one of the problems that can arise when you don’t take a strong stance (or label).

    I've been eating the same way for 10+ years. When it's cool outside, my breakfast is usually oatmeal (made with soy milk, flax, hemp, sometimes PB, and dried fruit and nuts or a banana) or protein pancakes and veggie sausage. Lunch is leftovers from dinner and dinner is usually 1 Italian meal a week (spaghetti with Impossible meat, lasagna made with tofu ricotta, Isa's chickpea fettuccini alfredo, or mushroom stroganoff), 1 Mexican meal (black bean enchiladas or tacos or quesadillas), 1 soup/stew/curry, and a "meat and 2" like Gardein tenders or lentil meatloaf with a baked potato and lima beans, for example.
    When it's warm out, I eat more yogurt bowls, cereal, and protein smoothies for breakfast, and lunch/dinner is generally the same formula as above, but replace the soup/stew with a big dinner salad with a vegan protein.
    Snacks are generally fruit, nuts, yogurt, cheese and crackers, a protein bar, or a protein smoothie.

    When I was 12 years old I heard that salt is not good for the heart and I went radical and stopped adding salt to my foods since then. I'm 44 :) But I do eat salty foods if that's how they come, I just don't add salt on top of what's already there. So I eat my salads or fries without salt, but I have no problems eating the salty fries from a junk food place (on the rare occasion that I do eat there).
    Man, I was so radical back then... I also didn't want to be addicted on anything and I stopped adding sugar to my tea or milk and I haven't ever since (obviously I don't smoke or drink coffee either).
    As I grew up I became more moderate on my changes, but I am very glad I kept those radical changes in my early teens :)

    I went to Portugal just before going vegan and ate a lot of bivalves. I was mindful about not eating other meat back then and that worked there. The clams, mussels, and oysters were plentiful. But egg was in almost everything. I could live with someone like him who had dairy sporadically and sometimes seafood. I wouldn't be as grossed out as with other meats (though dairy makes me really sad)

    Nutrition Made Simple is one of my favorite TH-cam channels as well, and I’m basically the same level of vegan as him.
    My diet is almost entirely vegan but with very little wiggle room, ie occasional bivalve consumption when at restaurants without vegan protein options. But overall, essentially vegan. Pretty cool to see he’s on a similar page.
    Likewise, I build most of my meals around legumes. The legume is almost always my center, then always include a veggie and another protein source (usually tofu, sometimes mock meat) and sometimes also a whole grain but not always. And healthy fat, guacamole is my favorite but nuts are a common substitution due to being more convenient, sometimes olive oil.
    I do put ripple pea milk and protein powder in my morning oatmeal though…

    I give nutritional advice to people who want to eat more veggies/less animal product, and find that easing in with legumes works better for most of the people, but a lot of them never get to the point where they can eat multiple servings of beans daily. Saying it's okay to eat just a little, try to eat a few spoonfuls at every meal seems to work better for many people, because if they try to eat a lot, they fail. And then all or nothing mentality stops them from eating beans at all.
    Also I do an absolutely different approach with candy. We have it in my house almost always. And we don't eat a lot. I eat a piece of dark chocolate every other day or so, but I don't care for other sweet treats. My kids neither. It's available. It lost its charm 😀

    I'm not so sure we need to worry so much about whether you have more beans or more whole grains. Both are helpful and contain lots of nutrients. I also don't think protein is as much of a concern as everybody makes it out to be. I think anyone would be hard-pressed to find an example of someone with a protein deficiency who is eating a whole foods diet and getting enough calories.

    • @katelijnesommen
      @katelijnesommen 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's probably true, but there are also indications that prioritising more protein (more than you strictly need to not have a deficiency) really helps with satiety, which in turn inhibits overeating. So while it's true that people with a sufficient-calorie whole food diet are unlikely to have a protein deficiency, it's probably still true that having more protein helps with cravings, mindless eating, emotional eating, etc.

    • @b.porterv7418
      @b.porterv7418 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @katelijnesommen maybe, but the entire picture has to be looked at in terms of risk versus benefit. The jury is out, from what I've read, regarding whether excess protein is harmful. For example, excess protein raises MTOR, which isn't good if you want to avoid cancer as an adult. I just don't think it's necessary, and there are studies just like the ones use site regarding protein, which I have found that say carbohydrates are the most satiating. There's also epidemiological evidence, which isn't the highest tier but is still useful, showing that even low protein diets can increase health and longevity, such as the traditional Okinawan diet. I believe that was only about 9% protein, maybe less.

    I was interested that you mentioned calcium, because that was the biggie I noticed. That and protein - he seems to depend on a protein powder to get sufficient protein. I know people say it's easy enough on a vegan diet but I am often surprised by the number of vegans whose food when you see it lacks protein. And while leafy greens are supposed to be a great source of calcium I doubt you can really get enough without a fortified plant milk. The exception in the case of leafy greens may be kale which seems to have a lot of calcium that is very bioavailable. Many fortified plant milks aren't very bioavailable because of the form of calcium used.

      The rda for calcium is absurd. No one needs 1000-1500mg of calcium a day. The WHO says that 400mg is already enough. However, if you really think you need 1000 or more milligrams of calcium a day, you can still eat that much without any fortified plant milks or calcium supplements. Corn tortillas alone could give you more than 1000 mg of calcium in one day.

      Honestly, there is no more evidence that bivalves are sentient than that plants are sentient. That, also, we don't know *fully* for sure - there might be a completely different way that sentience manifests that we can't measure yet - but as we understand sentience right now it's highly highly likely that they are not. They have no central nervous system. They don't have any of the markers of sentience that other animals have, just like plants. Bivalves and plants are both capable of responding to stimuli, but as far as we know, they experience no pain or other emotional states.
      It's a contentious topic and more research will probably show more nuanced insight. Erring on the side of caution as a vegan of course isn't wrong and I think many will feel more comfortable with that. For others including bivalves might make an otherwise (?) vegan diet easier and more sustainable for them.
