    My mother had to wear handmade turned shoes due to her neurological foot disabilities. Watching your careful and beautiful work made me think of her wonderful shoemaker Mr. Sanchez. He put bows on her orthopaedic shoes, but we never thought of beading. He mostly made custom cowboy boots. It was after all Texas.

    Nicole I think we're at the point where you no longer need to explain that 'witchy/goth' is your aesthetic.
    If you're making something cottagecore or neon we might need a heads up though :)

      Somehow, one would never imagine, that it's possible...to just make shoes at home. Real leather shoes, that don't look homemade. I've been sewing for 2 decades, yet this somehoe blows my mind.

    I have a strong suspicion that the unidentified white leather is goat leather... it has the right colour, texture, and from your description, properties. Hope that helps if you ever need more

    • @raraavis7782
      @raraavis7782 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Yeah, I second that. I lived close to a leather vendor for years and got to snoop around in their cavern like underground storage on several occasions...I've definitely seen examples of goat leather, that had that stiff, paperlike quality.

    • @DrachenGothik666
      @DrachenGothik666 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Latigo leather has that same look & feel. It's often thick, white & papery if it's made for use as moccasin soles, otherwise, it's tanned & oiled for use in making boots & other hard-wearing items. It's made from cowhide. The material Nicole used might be latigo, or it might be goat, though goat is a thin leather, & this stuff was pretty thick (had to be shaved on the edges), so it makes me think it's latigo.

    a really fascinating lesson once again! I know this is an odd thing to praise but I really appreciated the still camera choices. i love maker videos but the sudden 'vlog' style handheld camera shots make it hard for me to watch (motion sickness woo). I appreciate the extra time it takes to set up a stand for each shot, It's unnoticeable to most but thankyou regardless!

    All of the research you do so the shoe you are putting together is assembled in the same way from that year (era/time period) is so interesting. I love the Victorian and Edwardian era's of fashion but I had no idea there was so many particulars, differences and changes in the way women's garments were pieced together even in one year! You really are giving me a history lesson that the designs were very intricate and several different methods could be used to aquire the same look. It really is fascinating to watch you, thank you so much!

The trick is to remove the marks without altering the sheen of the floor. Ah! The glamorous life of an artist….

    Nicole: That was AMAZING!! I don't know if you make shoes for anyone else, (by commission), but if you do, I hope you are charging them appropriately for all of the work that goes into making those shoes. Like $400 or more. Those came out beautifully and fit your heel as if it were a second skin. I don't think I have ever seen a heel fit around the back of the foot as well as this pair did. You are so talented and I hope producers of films using that era of costume, will hire you to supervise the designing and making of shoes for films. They would for sure get shoes that actually fit the time period and are made well too. Of course they would not be handmade, but at least they could be made to look better and be period specific. I am in constant awe of your talents. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us.

    The shank is still what the arch support of a pointe shoe is called. Now I know where that comes from!

    This pair turned out gorgeous! If you didn’t state that there were issues, I wouldn’t have known.

    These shoes are basically made like point shoes are made. That is sooooo cool!

    Beautiful as always Nicole and a joy to watch! One of the things I love is that you are managing to do all this with very hyper mobile thumbs like mine! I knit, sew and crochet and have found compression gloves can really help as the hyper mobility can make your hands sore at times. Take care my lovely and keep the lovely videos coming 😘

    I enjoy watching your historical shoemaking and how much craftsmanship you put into your work. Would you ever consider making shoes to go with the Peacock Dress that Cathy Hay is making?

    So awesome to see them completed! To go from that low-key livestream on Instagram where you were beading the first upper to this beautiful pair of shoes is a process that still fascinates me. It’s still like magic in hands such as yours. I’m really looking forward to seeing that bodice recreation. Witchy-goth is still the aesthetic of my heart.
