Making a Historically Accurate Maleficent Cosplay- Sewing the Houppelande

Hi everyone! It's time to travel back in time and explore the 15th century. Maleficent, and Sleeping Beauty as a whole, are incredibly artistic renditions of a very old fairy tale. The movie is heavily influenced by the 14th/15th centuries, and not just because the story originated near that era. The designers were influenced by historical artworks, particularly The Lady and the Unicorn.
This influence shows in Maleficent's character design and costume. Her overgarment is very close in style to the massive houppelandes worn as overgowns during the 15th century. So that's what I'm going to tackle sewing today! It's not a complex garment, though we know little about its construction or shape. From what I can find, there seems to be a gradual transition in how full the skirts are, how the waist is pleated, the collar shapes, sleeve shapes and edging, etc throughout its popularity. The houppelande is most often found in the first half of the century, but its influence on other large overgowns continues for decades.
My particular project is made from a black wool broadcloth (from a local store), linen with purple silk taffeta ( www.renaissanc... ), and with a linen buckram interior (made from unbleached linen and gum tragacanth). It's worn over a black wool kirtle, linen smock, wool hose, and my poulaine shoes from December.
This project was inspired by some of my wonderful friends that are also doing their own spin on historically accurate Disney! Some have already started their series, others have yet to announce their character, so keep an eye out on these channels for more videos soon! And if you too are inspired to create (or assemble, or dress up in) your own historically accurate Disney character, I would LOVE to see it. Let's have fun, be inspired, and learn something new!

Just coming here to say y'all would not believe how *fast* she made this thing. One minute she was covered in wool, the next minute she was at my back door scaring Suba so bad she peed herself. It is *epic* in person. EPIC.

I'm sure that would look amazing but I don't think it'd fall under the "historically accurate" label, would it? I know the book was released in the 50s and iirc it was set in the present time.
@@mariaah3073 Huh, so it was. Your right in that it wouldn't be historically accurate for the 20/30's but I'm sure she could make some thing just as amazing for the 50's. Honestly, I thought that the original animation was set in the 20/30's too, but then I haven't watched it since my childhood lol.
Having colored lining might be rare, but it seems to be period. There's a wonderful Italian fresco from about 1420 that shows St. Ursula in a white houppelande lined in bright red. She even has the collar splayed open kind of like Maleficent.
I love that fresco! I wouldnt be surprised if the contrest lining was actually fairly normal. I can imagine that for the spring/summer months it would have been practical particularly when there is still some chill but you dont need the fur lining. If I ever make one, I'm definitely going for contrast AND the wonderful cut outs.
@@cincocats320 I know I've read about fur linings being removed to clean them so it would be plausible that the same garment might have a fabric lining and a fur lining for different seasons (I'm picturing 3 layers outer fabric, lining fabric, fur and the fur being added/removed as necessary). I can't remember where I read it but given my usual topics of interest its probably 16th century something like royal wardrobe accounts paying for someone to refresh the furs on a garment.
@@ElizabethJones-pv3sj that makes a lot of sense and reminds me of the 2 in 1 coats you can get today where there's often a fuzzy inner lining that attaches with poppers for the colder months only with a lot more work to attach/detach the fur lining back then

In fact, we have lots of sculptures for references, though most of them are recreated by Roman.
@@noblemily it doesn't necessarily have to be ancient style, they could pick any time frame & just use inspiration of patterns or trimmings or accessories to give it the theme of a patron god, goddess or creature...
The ancient Greeks' clothing was very simple though, mostly rectangles folded and connected a certain way. Would make for short videos.

@@mirjanbouma It gets less simple when you include the weaving patterns and embroidery that would be included on a gods' clothes. I'm so here for the super elaborate trims and belts.
That silk, besides being a fantastic and rich color, is a great choice because even Maleficent couldn't pull off wearing a gown lined with dead muppets. Elmo's cousin is just not... intimidating. Even on an "evil" fairy. What a gorgeous gorgeous piece! Thank you for mentioning the Little Ice Age. I feel like it's sometimes forgotten when talking about all these layers of wool and fur and silk.
I love how you talked about the absolute piece of art that is Sleeping Beauty! Nobody seems to get the film isn’t supposed to be super complex, it was all about the art.
I agree! Watching the old Disney fairy tales next to their modern counterparts, you can really see the lack of dialogue. However, the storytelling is there. It is there in the artwork, the music, the color. The old films were richer.

I always felt bad for Maleficent. I always cheered when she replied with "You assume I'm going to be evil? Well. Let me show you how evil I can be."
Even though she was an antagonist within the fairytale, Malificent was my number one childhood "hero". Beautiful, elegant, and eloquent, her skulking raven familiar had the most to do with it however, since I knew even at an early age that I would have a life long and intense passion for ornithology!
Well, they assumed that she is evil because she is.
Seems like she was more angry at being snubbed than evil.

@@ElizabethJones-pv3sj Sounds a bit like life. I took my anger out on the parents of an ex roommate who ripped me off, and I did it WITH FERVOR. That provided my nemesis with some motivation to behave better. He got it in spades from me AND them! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! (Malificent like laugh).

I can't speak for all costumers but what I hate about sleeves is the fitting part so big, loose, hanging sleeves are all the fun of sleeves with none of the hassle of fitting (so long as you have a decent sleeve head shape you can use).
@@ElizabethJones-pv3sj Sleeves are the bane of my existence. Mainly the part where they have to fit into the armholes. :P So the T shaped tunics etc of the medieval period are perfect for that. :D
@@ElizabethJones-pv3sj Yup. Part of why I love poofy sleeves is because I can guestimate the size and just gather it down. Also knits that stretch are better than non-stretch wovens when it comes to sleeves.

The cat I adopted at the end of last year was actually originally named Maleficent. I changed her name to Luna since she seemed to sweet and shy. Ha. Her middle name is now Maleficent because as she is comfortable enough around me to let her true personality show, I see just how fitting the name Maleficent really was. 😉
As for Disney heroines, the only one I truly identify with is Megara. I adore her sassy, sarcastic wit.
I really hope no one at my work checked the security cameras when I did my victory dance because I recognized that it was a Houppelande before seeing the full title.
The colors and the materials scream to me, "Tell me you're wealthy without telling me you're wealthy."

I KNOW I'd draw them so differently if I did the series now, so in the meantime I'm just gonna... live vicariously through your videos 😅💜
To get those nice rounded medieval cartridge pleats in lighter fabrics, feed a pencil down each channel before drawing up the gathering stitch, Once you've got them just so, tie them off, pull out the pencils and stuff with a little wool (or broadcloth offcut sausages) tacked in place to help them keep their shape. I like the taffeta lining, it gives this houppelande the sound of hidden, rustling scales, very fitting for Maleficent.
Okay but I kind of want to make one of these as a winter coat?

as a lifelong ballet dancer who also loves history and fairy tales, ballets are my favorite thing ever. I took a class on fairy tales a couple of years ago in college and wrote a paper on Swan Lake and Tchaikovsky's work. I get a warm fuzzy feeling seeing the art that I love cited as such an important historical influence on something as iconic as a Disney movie. The music will always be associated with the ballet for me too, the one time where Disney I feel like didn't quite do the story justice - there's just too much great stuff to include it all in an hour and a half!

Maleficent is one of my very favorite Disney characters🖤💜🖤. At one point in your reveal, your back was turned, the wool moved in a slithery motion and the silk rustled 🖤 it was as if you had captured the inner dragon!!! 😘

This video made me smile. I and some of my friends are a part of the SCA ((society of Creative Anachronism). This group does reenactment from Elizabethan back as far as people want to go. Last year I was apprenticed by a master of craft who specialized in beading. When I was apprenticed I was gifted a Russian peasant costume to match the other two apprentices. Mine was green, the other two were a dark pinkish red and blue. So we have privately joked about us being the sleeping beauty three fairies. The last couple of months and a half we have been talking about making the lady we are apprenticed to a gown during this same era you are doing. Inspired like you by Maleficent. So this video made me smile this morning. Thank you for doing this project and giving so much great information.

I loved Maleficent growing up, wanted a raven and her big ring so bad ^_^.
The closest I got was a rescued crow (that became VERY devoted to me, remaining virtually on shoulder even though given complete liberty), a 6' bamboo staff, and a practiced regal attitude.

WOW!! this is so cool--using the oak leaf dagging pattern totally sells as the flame/wiggly bat wing edge and that purple is just amazing. Maleficent has such a cool design and it's so neat that the costume was actually pretty historically accurate to begin with
This is so fun! I'm currently working on a maleficent costume too!! Bit of a different time period but its nice to "compare notes"! It may also be entirely coincidence but there is another fairytale personage called "malusine" which was a fairy woman who turns into a dragon toward the end of her story. She's got a more traditional Psyche and Cupid style story set up but it's interesting to see the connection. I'll probably chat about it when I eventually make my video.

She continuously exhibits determination, clever problem solving, self-worth and toughness throughout her story, much more so than the other characters. She eventually gets the "happy ending" but it isn't the standard "Prince Charming rescued me as I sat by helplessly from an evil villain/dire situation/impoverished existence/curse, based solely upon my beauty or other perceived material value". Jasmine analyzes her predicaments, plans or makes quick decisions and actively participates in her own rescues.
She's a solid role model, even when she fails, because she darn well *tries*
She also started a trend:
Disney gave us other strong non-white female non-villains throughout the 90s, but honestly none of them were quite so badass... Esmeralda is my close second.
Edit to clarify: I *personally feel* like prior to this point, all of the "strong" female characters are the villains or antagonists.
If I might make a recommendation to anyone interested in listening to the older Sleeping Beauty stories on youtube, A Bit Late and A Bit Frank does ASMR 'bedtime stories'. You can hear Talia and the Moon, and other iterations on her channels. She is so great!!!

One of my favourite Disney animations, I've always loved the artwork and colour palette and the fact you can really see the 15th century artwork as inspiration, that odd flat perspective and sharp angles. Really beautiful, I love that you opted for this dramatic historical sleeve design ! Not super sure about the belt though, what I've usually seen is either leather or really thick wool, and usually in a contrasting colour to the houppelande. But I'm not specialist of that era !

Read the Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munch. The princess saved herself! My father was horrified when he read it!!! Also you know when they become adults they will be strong willed independent people who don’t take crap from anyone or advice from their parents! I can’t even complain about it as I raised her that way!! Though when she was looking at a house with asbestos in it and talking about doing the removal herself like that’s a good idea. And telling me she’s an engineer like I don’t know. I bit my tongue a lot!!! Fortunately she ended up buying a different house with a lot less problems!!

Because I didn't know that either (language barrier): Wool broadcloth is a woven wool fabric that has been walked, i.e. soaked in water and moved around so that the fibers felt. It's not a pure felt, but like felt doesn't fray. Sounds like amazing material, if my skin didn't itch with the mere thought of wool touching it. You'd really need an underlayer that covers everything, making a houppelande a outdoors and cold weather garment.
I'm so excited for this project!! I need to learn how to make a houppelande for my SCA persona.

Sooooo I'm doing medieval reenactment almost for 10 years now. And first thing that I dreamed of sewing when I started doing reenactment of course was a massive silk or at least wool houppelande. But of course at the time it was too expensive for me. Now that years have passed, I've noticed that I still don't have a houppelande that I want in my medieval wardrobe. But then you made this beautiful video and a beautiful houppelande and reminded me of my dreams that I now am able to fulfil! So thank you for your work and for inspiring people!

I’m not seeing any comments regarding the concept art; if there are some, apologies for the repetition. If I recall correctly, Marc Davis did the concept art for Maleficent, and he was all about drawing inspiration from history. In several of the bonus feature interviews, he mentions that the historical accuracy is whimsically similar. The word that comes to mind for me looking at the historical representations is "sumptuous" and I definitely think that's appropriate for Maleficent! Really stunning work!!

I am so down with this, what a lovely project! I also have never identified with any Disney Princesses beyond Vanellope von Schweetz when she asked a room full of princesses " Are you ok? Do I need to call the police?" when they rapid fire questioned her to see if she also had been knapped, imprisoned, cursed, or if she was the survivor of multiple assassination attempts.

It looks awesome. This is going to sound crazy, but I think I loved the swishing sounds of the piece moving around you the best in the final shots--it SOUNDS a little like wings, which of course was part of what Disney was going for in the original animation. I can absolutely imagine you sweeping into a party and the entire room pausing in that outfit. Best of luck cursing the next child to whose Christening you were not invited!
